    FEBRUARY 11, 2018

My Dear Friends, WARNING: SOMEONE HAS HACKED MY EMAIL RECIPIENTS’ LIST ASKING FOR MONEY: PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING RULES THAT I FOLLOW IN MY EMAIL: 1. I never ask for money for myself in any emails,

messages, or messenger (which I do not use at all). Asking for money for the church, I only do in person or from the pulpit, as you well know.

    2. For all Church correspondence, I only use this email: [email protected]. So if you receive a request for money from any other emails, copy them and call the parish office and the police.

    3. Look carefully at the spelling of the words, if an alphabet letter has been added, it means that it is a hacker. Read the email carefully and look for obvious typos in the body of the email, this would indicate that the email is fake.

The tone in first reading today is so pathetic, and it makes us stop in our tracks and remain confused and puzzled because usually the messages of the Sunday readings and the Gospel are connected. But it seems that today, the one is like night and despair, and the Gospel is daylight and joy. I’m sure we all resonate with Job’s feelings when we are feeling angry, frustrated, lonely, depressed and almost ready to scream: “Stop the World! I wanna get off.” We all had such moments and sometimes the night of the soul is so long, and the sun of joy so short! It always reminds me of those up-north winter endless days when a leaden sky is so constant and oppressive! “Is not man’s life on earth a drudgery,” asks Job, and then goes on deeper and deeper into the hole of despair: “I shall not see happiness again!”

The answer is JESUS. After the synagogue’s service, Jesus starts with a miraculous healing of Simon’s mother-in-law. He approached, grasped her hand and helped her up. No one asked or begged for her healing, Jesus acts on His own. Likewise Jesus will approach us in our dark moments, when we seem to drown in our own fear and loneliness! We are not reaching for Him, no energy left to pray and beg, Jesus grasps our hand and pulls us up out of darkness into the rays of sun that dry up our tears, that warm up our cold bones and fill our hearts with joy!

So we can reject any devil’s dominance over us. Demonic possession very rarely reaches physical traits of the Hollywood hype like the Exorcist movie. If the devil can possess our mind and soul through any diabolic means, it doesn't need to control the body. Possessed people will look normal on the outside but their actions reveal their diabolic conditioning.

Look at history: the debauchery of the Roman empire, the atheist communist regimes such as North Korea, the godless Nazi Holocaust, for example are diabolic direct challenges to God. If God is creation of life, they (devils and followers) are life destroyers in any way, shape or form. If God is the provider of joy, they are heartless killers. If God is order, they are for riots, terror and media rage. If God is love, they are for total, uncompromising hate. If God is for truth, they are for total lying. If God is

    PSALTER WEEK II

for unity and togetherness, they are for division! As a legal immigrant in these magnificent United States

of America in 1964 and as a proud citizen since 1971, I am now so concerned by the hatred in my beloved country: if there is hatred, there is no God!

February is the month when all the parishes of our Venice Diocese start the Catholic Faith Appeal. This weekend is Commitment Sunday and we will be having our In-Pew Collection. The pledge cards you are asked to complete have four choices for you dear parishioners. You can:

    1. Give a gift 2. Make a pledge for the year 3. Indicate that you have already given a gift 4. Indicate that you cannot give a gift.

This In-Pew Collection is very important and I encourage every family to fill out a pledge card and deposit it in the collection basket.

Remember how beneficial the 2017 Catholic Faith Appeal (CFA) has been to us. Our CFA assessment was $332,000; you generous parishioners of St. Martha

pledged $357,977, resulting in a total non-assessed gift to St. Martha of $24,100 (after fees). Thank you! As you can see, generosity to the Bishop brings blessings to St. Martha Church and Parish. And as I’ve mentioned many times before, if I could persuade the 78% of our registered parishioners, who are not contr ibuting to the CFA, to support the Bishop, then we may exceed the goal of the 2018 CFA. Thank you again! Our annual Feast of Abraham celebration

will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 6 p.m., in Fr. Fausto Parish Center. We honor Abraham (Ibrahim), the first man to whom God revealed his plan of salvation and the forefather of the Jewish people, whom Jews, Christians and Muslims honor as our father in the faith. Tickets are available in the Parish Office, be sure to not miss this wonderful interdenominational gathering.

The Holy Season of Lent, which prepares us to celebrate the most solemn Christian feast of Easter, starts this coming Ash Wednesday, February 14, when we Catholics mark our foreheads with blessed ashes as the external sign of our inner determination to correct our faults, to make penance for our sins, and to achieve a closer union with Jesus, Our Eternal Love.

We Catholics renew this commitment, in these 40 days of Lent, to Jesus, and we solemnly express such commitment in the renewal of our baptismal promises at Easter. You are very familiar with my rhymes about becoming a SAINT with the capital “S”: • Sacr ifice of the Mass, every day, or an extra weekly

Mass during Lent. This is the best sacrifice! • Scripture reading, a chapter or two of the Bible a day! • Spiritual practices such as going to confession, Rosary,

Stations of the Cross, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. • Search and Save your fr iends not attending Church

any more. • Serve the poor by volunteer ing at Car itas or

Bethesda House. • Sweets: no cookies, pies, candies until Easter . • Sausages, Salami, Prosciutto and other delicacies…no!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS OUR LADY OF VICTORY COUNCIL #3358 Tootsie Roll Drive, February 10 & 11

The Knights of Columbus will be in the Courtyard after Masses this weekend for their Annual Tootsie Roll Drive which raises funds for people with special needs. Last year donations went to Special Olympics and St. Mary Academy. Stop by and support the Knights!

    • Smoking Forbidden for 40 days (aaaargh!!) • Sober for 40 days from alcohol (eat lasagna with

Coca Cola). • Shows: TV, movies, operas, par ties (except St.

Patrick's Day and St. Joseph’s Day). • Sex…a renewed commitment to say no to X or R

rated movies…no pornographic magazines...no sexual or racial harassment...no dirty jokes…(how about listening instead to WBVM, 90.5 FM?) Mass times on Ash Wednesday are 7:30 a.m.,

    9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., Noon, 4:00 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. (Vietnamese/Hall).

Also, on Ash Wednesday, we will have a special collection to aid the Catholic Church in Central and Eastern Europe to provide food, shelter, medical care, catechesis, and companionship for the lonely in a region still struggling in the aftermath of atheistic Soviet rule. Your donations help to restore the strength of the Church in the region. See the letter from Bishop Dewane in today’s bulletin.

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast. On days of fast one full meal and two lesser meals are allowed. Eating between meals is not permitted. Catholics who have completed their 18th year are bound by this law until the beginning of their 60th year.

Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence. On days of abstinence, meat may not be taken. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics who have completed their 14th year.

One of the Lenten sacrifices is spending less money on ourselves and giving it to Catholic Relief Services through Operation Rice Bowl, which is a program of prayer, fasting, education and alms giving. It is an opportunity to pray, share and be united with all God’s people. Of the money collected through Rice Bowl, 25% remains in the diocese, the rest is used by CRS to support programs that give hope to a world in need.

Our parish mission has been a good success, thanks to the inspired speeches by Fr . Maur ice Emelu. Thank you to all who attended, even on Super Bowl Sunday! And above all, to Fr. Maurice for his deep spirituality. If anyone would like to contact Fr. Maurice you can email him at [email protected].

That time of year of catching colds and the danger of the flu is here. Some of us have already suffered! On behalf of all parishioners, please avoid shaking hands and/or kissing at the sign of peace and as you enter and leave the Church. I always encourage the Fist-Bump!

Smile, God loves you and so does Fr. Fausto with your St. Martha clergy:

FROM THE OFFICE OF OUR BISHOP:

During the time of communist reign in many

Central and Eastern European countries, practicing the faith became illegal and people were forced to hide and secretly share the truths of the Gospel. After decades of oppression and persecution, Catholics still struggle to rebuild not only their physical places of worship but also their church ministries and communities.

The country of Albania, nestled north of Greece on the Adriatic Sea, suffered greatly under communist rule. In the capital of Tirana, the Church is continuing to restore not only its structures but also the spirituality of the faithful after years of suffering. After communism, the congregation of sisters known as the Company of Mary Our Lady opened a school that now serves over 700 children. With your support the youth are educated and are now thriving.

The Diocese of Venice will be taking up a Collection on Ash Wednesday, February 14, 2018 for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe (CCEE). Your generosity helps the religious communities teach children and equips Parishes to provide a space to build peaceful communities. Please give generously to the CCEE Collection for the future of the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. May God continue to bless you for the good you do!

I take this opportunity to extend to you my continued consideration as well as my prayers on this Ash Wednesday, as we begin our Lenten Journey.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
