Gastrointestinal function and chronic diseaseEvery day, healthcare practitioners are challenged by cases

involving gastrointestinal complaints. In addition, gastrointestinal

dysfunction is associated with a myriad of diseases, symptoms

and disorders, meaning that conditions in which symptoms

are systemic, rather than localised to the gut, can often be

traced back to an underlying GI dysfunction. Compromised GI

function may, for example, result in macromolecules that would

normally be excluded from the body instead passing through

the intestinal barrier and entering circulation - a condition called

intestinal permeability, or “leaky gut’’- which can lead to systemic

inflammatory and immune-related symptoms, such as asthma,

eczema and rheumatoid arthritis, amongst others.

With so many complex interactions it can be difficult to know

where to begin, but the 5R approach aims to provide a focus for

evaluation of gastrointestinal function, with targeted nutritional,

digestive enzyme and probiotic formulas, which, in addition to a

gut friendly food plan, can support the normalisation of healthy gut

function.

The 5R approachThe 5R approach within the Gut Transformation Programme aims

to:

1. Remove the underlying cause of the imbalance, whether

that means removing offending substances from the diet,

or unwanted compounds from the body. Certain herbs and

nutrients such as garlic or berberine can be used to support

the first step in the transformation programme and support a

balanced intestinal environment.

2. Replace digestive enzymes or stomach acid, components

that facilitate the breakdown of food. Any insufficiency in

these compounds will inhibit digestion and the utilisation of

nutrients, and broad spectrum enzymatic supplementation,

and hydrochloric acid support if necessary, will support

healthy GI function.

3. Reinoculate the gut with beneficial bacteria. Specific probiotic

strains such as L. acidophilus NCFM will help to support a

healthy balance of microflora in the GI tract, ensuring optimal

digestion and immune function.

4. Repair the GI barrier through dietary and lifestyle

modifications, as well as targeted nutritional support.

Nutrients such as l-glutamine and quercetin support the

integrity of the gut lining.

5. Retain healthy gut function by eating healthily, taking regular

exercise, managing stress, ensuring good quality sleep and

applying foundation nutritional support, such as multivitamins

and minerals, probiotics and l-glutamine.
