IRRIGATION IN GUJARAT

1.1 Background :

In Gujarat, the monsoon depends on equatorial climate. The 60% of

rainfall is uncertain, unprecedented and unequal. Demand of water

increases as population increases in state. This requirement is to be carried

out from limited water resources.

Water resources management of the state is aimed at providing

water efficiently, in equitable and sustainable manner. The state has given

due attention to accelerate the pace of water resources development to

increase the net water availability by creating additional storage,

completion of ongoing projects, improvement in water use efficiency

bridging the gap between the potential created and its utilization,

restoration & modernization of old irrigation system promoting

participatory irrigation management large scale peoples participation in

water conservation programmes and inter- basin transfer of water.

For harnessing valuable and limited sources of water management

such as preservation of small-scale, medium scale and large scale water

reservoirs, joint use of underground water, conservation of underground

water and its re-use, salinity ingress, transfer of additional quota of water

etc. are required to be adopted. For assessing all these, Government of

Gujarat works with a clear vision of maximum harnessing of water

resources for the use of the people of Gujarat.

3. WATER RESOURCES DEVELOPMENT.

The geographical area of the State is 196 lakh hectare, while cultivable

area of the State is 125 lakh hectare. The ultimate irrigation potential

through the surfaced water is assessed at 39.40 lakh hectares including

18.00 lakh hectares through Sardar Sarovar (Narmada) Project.

Similarly in respect of ground water resources, irrigation potential

through surfaced & ground water is estimated to be 65.00 lakh hectare.

Potential created through major, medium, minor irrigation schemes,

indirect benefits through check dams and Sujalam Suphalam Yojana

and Government & private tubewells is about 51.36 lakh hectare as on

june -12. Potential utilized is about 43.01 lakh hectare.

Check Dams are the most effective tool for water conservation at the

minimum investment and minimum maintenance and operational cost.

They act as ground water recharging means and they offer facility of

lift irrigation in the surrounding directly from the reservoir or from the

wells recharged in the surrounding. About 1,53,249 nos of check dams

have been constructed under different schemes by different department.

Where suitable sites are not available for the construction of check

dams, deepening of existing ponds/Tanks with financial contribution of

90:10 (Government: Beneficiaries) are implemented in a big way to

store and conserve water recharging during monsoon. More than 23000

ponds/tanks have been deepened by different departments.

About 1,22,035 boribundh and 2,61,785 khet Talawadi have been

completed by various departments for water conservation and ground

water recharging.
