ISPO WORLD CONGRESS – “ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY FOR ALL”

ISPO – INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR PROSTHETICS AND ORTHOTICSTHE LEADING INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY

Every two years, the P&O sector meets at the World Congress of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics. Organised every two years, the congress is a unique interactive forum, where many professionals involved in the care of patients in need of a prosthesis or an orthosis (P&O) come together to learn about the latest scientific and clinical advances, products, innovative technologies, designs and materials in prosthetic and orthotic care.

ISPO World Congresses move from one continent to the next in order to reach a broad range of markets. Special attention is paid to regional needs for learning and specific issues and challenges.

In 2007, the World Congress was held in Vancouver, 2010 in Leipzig, 2013 in Hyderabad and 2015 in Lyon. Participant structure shifts from one venue to the next. The majority of the participants in Vancouver came from North America, in Leipzig from Europe, Hyderabad from Asia and, in Lyon, the host country was very well represented with more than 1,000 French delegates. THE ISPO WORLD CONGRESS IS MOVING INTO THE WORLD’S MARKET

CAPE TOWN

Cape Town and the Western Cape are considered among the most beautiful areas in Africa. Characterized by a cultural melting pot of Indonesian, French, Dutch, British and German settlers, the local Khoisan (Bushman & Hottentot) tribes and the Bantu tribes from the north, the pristine coastline with its white sandy beaches, the magnificent countryside with its bountiful rivers, wetlands and dams, and the unique flora kingdom, together with a “Mediterranean-like” climate and friendly community, make it a perfect destination for any visitor.

• Cape Town is the capital of the Western Cape.

• The city’s motto is “Spes Bona”, which is Latin for “good hope”.

• Cape Town is twinned with London, Buenos Aires, Nice, San Francisco and several other international cities.

• The world’s first heart transplant was performed by Dr Christiaan Barnard in Cape Town in 1967.

• Cape Town is sometimes called the “Tavern of the seas”.

WELCOME TO SOUTH AFRICA

MARKET PERSPECTIVES

As the economic motor of the African continent, South Africa boasts the largest market for suppliers in the healthcare industry, by a considerable margin. 90 per cent of the medical equipment used in South Africa is imported. Experts predict average growth in market volume of 4.5 % over the next few years. This means that the forecast for 2016 represents a total market volume of approximately EUR 1.8 billion. Around 50 % of the market is accounted for by privately funded medical care, with 8.7 million people privately insured. These are, however, just 17 % of the total population, so that there is a huge, as yet unmet need in the system. (Source: German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy)

AIR TRAVEL AND CONNECTIVITY

Delegates to Cape Town mostly arrive and depart by air. Cape Town International Airport is located only 20 minutes from the city center. Most airlines have regular direct flights to this global city. South African Airlines (SAA) is one of the world’s most experienced airlines with the best safety records. As a Star Alliance* member, SAA flies to six continents and is one of the leading carriers in Africa. Once on the ground, getting around is relatively simple and convenient with, taxis being the preferred mode of transport for international travellers.

Getting to Cape Town International Convention Centre is easy. There are various means of transport available:

• MyCiTi Shuttles, which run from the airport to the city (myconnect card)

• Water taxi between the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and the CTICC

• Metered taxis, luxury air-conditioned coaches and shuttle buses regularly run between the airport, hotels, the city centre and most major tourist destinations

• MyCiti bus service (myconnect card)

* The Star Alliance member airlines are pleased to be appointed as the official Airline Network for the ISPO 16th World Congress 2017. Save up to 20 % on travel with them. For more details please check the website: www.ispo2017.org/flight-discounts

ISPO 16TH WORLD CONGRESS 2017

AN INTERDISCIPLINARY WORLD CONGRESS

The theme of this year’s World Congress will be “Assistive Technology for All”. Ensuring increased access to assistive technology for users worldwide, forms a part of ISPO’s vision to “contribute to a world where all persons have equal opportunity for full participation in society” by working together with international and national government representatives, P&O and rehabilitation professionals and the industry. The congress is a major platform for dialogue and exchange.

The congress theme emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of congress delegates. Interacting with a diverse group of professionals (from prosthetists-orthotists to physicians to physiotherapists to psychologists to professional engineers) provides opportunities to change practice for the better and to “think outside the box” by interacting with experts from around the world who provide a different professional perspective.

GET THE AWARD – BRIAN AND JOYCE BLATCHFORD PRIZE

The Brian and Joyce Blatchford Prize, prize money EUR 15,000, has been established by the Blatchford Family to honor the memory of Brian and Joyce Blatchford. It has been awarded at every World Congress of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics, but in 2015 it was upgraded to a Team Prize. This is in recognition of the fact that most developments are nowadays a team effort. The Prize has also been renamed to include the name of Mrs Joyce Blatchford who recently passed away. It will now be awarded to a team that has an outstanding record of innovative achievement in the field of prosthetics and/or orthotics. The achievement should be related to prosthetic and/or orthotic hardware, or scientifically based new techniques which result in better prostheses or orthoses. Further details are being finalized and the rules will be available at: www.ispo2017.org/awards-and-prizes
