FAST AND ABSTINENCE
OTHER ACTS OF PENANCE FOR LENT 2019
The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal
obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age
and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on all the
Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons
eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their
fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves
to a single full meal on Good Friday, while the other two
meals on that day are to be light. All the faithful are en-
couraged, when possible, to participate at Mass and to
receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently
the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading,
especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to par-
ticipate in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten edu-
cation programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is
especially recommended.
The Gardening Itch
Like most gardener’s around this time of the year I
begin to get a twitch. For a gardener, winter trans-
forms your landscape into a blank canvas. As I look
out over my yard I start to dream about the what I
could add this year. I consider what plants grew
well last season and what didn’t work out as I had
hoped. It’s all a blank slate, but as I wait for the
ground to thaw I am limited to the work of prepara-
tion and planning.
Not all of us are gardeners, but as we begin the
Lenten season, we are all offered a similar oppor-
tunity to reflect upon the course of our spiritual jour-
ney. In today’s Gospel, Jesus observes:
“every tree is known by it’s own
fruit. People do not pick figs from
thorn bushes, nor do they gather
figs from brambles.”
So, if you want figs you have to plant a fig tree. If
you want grapes, you need a grape vine. I invite
you to take some time today and think about the
fruit that you’d like to see in your own life. If you
need some inspiration the fruits of the Holy Spirit
are a good place to start: Love Joy, Peace, Pa-
tience, Kindness, Generosity, Faithfulness, Gentle-
ness, Self-Control. Then spend some time decid-
ing how you’re going to cultivate that fruit through
the season of Lent.
Hopefully you’ve heard about our Lenten opportuni-
ties presented at all the Masses last Sunday. Our
theme, Making Space for God is an invitation to
reframe our Lenten sacrifices. Instead of just giving
up chocolate or Netflix, consider how you can Make
Space for God and invite Jesus into a new aspect
of your daily life. Each of the talks, prayer times,
and the pilgrimage are opportunities to fertilize the
spiritual fruit in our lives. May we embrace this
chance to allow Jesus to work in our hearts and
souls and produce a bountiful harvest.
Sincerely,
Dan Milani
Director of Adult Faith Formation

Building and Appeal Update….
It has been awhile
since we’ve updated
everyone
on our progress….
We have been going
through the process
of receiving all of the
approvals to move
forward with phase 2
and 3 of our project.
Those phases are the creation of a new playground for our chil-
dren and the building of a new Early Child Education Center for
our PreK 3, PreK 4, Kindergarten and PREP classes. On January
15th our Land Development application was approved by Mal-
vern Borough and we will begin the bidding process of both
phases. The architectural drawings for our playground have
been reviewed and approved. There will be an area for our
young children, with playground equipment and a safe surface
for the children. In the next few months we will have contrac-
tors approved and work will begin on the playground. The com-
pletion of the playground will take a few months.
The construction of the new Early Childhood Education Center
will follow the completion of the playground.
We will keep you updated as we progress.
Thank you for your continued generosity and financial support.
