FOOTBALL

Josephine BADOY – Y3B

History: various forms of foot-ball have been played throughout time however the current sport of Football was formalised in English public schools as far back as the XVIth century. Thus England is often called the home of football for that reason.

Game: 2 teams of 11 players play on a rectangular pitch for a total of 90 minutes split into 2 halves and must score points by kicking the ball into a goal which is protected by a goal keeper. The members of the team assume defensive and offensive positions, each one playing a particular post (e.g. midfielder)

National Colours: each team sports their colors, typically similar to the colours of their national flag. Likewise a national team is often dubbed by the colour of their shirts (e.g. French team les “Bleus”). Their fans generally wear the same colored clothes to support their team.

World Cup: every 4 years the FIFA organises a competition in which participate the 32 best national teams. In the first instance they are grouped into 8 pools of 4 teams.
