Football

The Case of the Missing Football Team Mascot. (6-10 Guest Electronic Version for Teens, Ages 11-17)

The Polytechnic High School Homecoming game was only a couple of hours away and the football team gathered in the locker room for some yummy snacks, a warm-up football hoop challenge, a football rap competition and the customary pre-game pep talk. As a tradition, the Polytech good luck mascot delivered a motivating speech to the team before a game. Over the years, it was a superstition that the Polytech football team did not win if Paul the Polytech Parrot didn’t deliver a speech to the team! Some skeptics call this a coincidence, but those involved with the football program preferred to not take a chance with the feathery superstition.

Coach Morningstar served a light pre-game dinner to the team and then went to retrieve Paul the Polytech Parrot and that is when the coach discovered Paul was missing! The football team was devastated and talks of forfeiting to their longtime rival team, the Flagstone Fighting Farmers, flew about the locker room.

Coach Morningstar helped the players collect their heads and the team organized a massive investigation to find Paul the Polytech Parrot. The football players took a quick break during the investigation to play a fun game of 'What Athletic Thing Am I.’ After the thorough investigation was over and the players submitted their guesses of the location of Paul the Parrot, the motive and of whodunit to the coach. The team relaxed with hot chocolate and dessert and one-by-one, revealed their involvement, if any, with the case...and the thief confessed! Then, the football players launched an exciting hunt for Paul the Parrot and everyone was relieved when Paul was found and was safe and sound! The players had just enough time before the big game to participate in a hilarious game of sports charades!

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HOST Thank you for purchasing the ‘The Case of the Missing Football Team Mascot’ game from mymysteryparty.com! This mystery is a light-hearted mystery that allows you and your guests to step into a different character while trying to solve the entertaining mystery. The party can be a huge success as long as you and your guests relax and let the mystery unravel during each round. The party pack (this document) needs to be printed in advance of the party. Cut out the clues and stuff them into envelopes labeled with the appropriate round and character for each round of the party. It is optimal to choose different colored envelopes for each round. During the party, your job as the host is to ensure that the envelopes are given to the guests at the appropriate times and most of all – that you and your guest are having a blast!! Depending on the mystery, there might be a few props you will need to collect in advance and plant at certain places and times during the party. Make sure to read the host instructions for each round prior to the party to ensure that you have everything in place for the big day! Please note - the host instructions for each round do not disclose who the criminal is. This mystery comes with 9 male characters. There are 4 optional characters in this mystery – 3 males and 1 female that can be expanded up to 6. If you do not have guests for these 4 characters, simply omit the clue cards of these guests and any references to these characters in other clues as the clue cards indicate to do so. If you need to have characters added, contact us at [email protected] and we can accommodate your request for a $15.00 fee per additional character. Since you have elected to have this mystery sent to you electronically, simply copy this file out of the PDF, and transfer to any word processing program and delete the clues or references to the omitted character in the other characters’ clues before you print the mystery. If you forget to do this before you print the mystery, discard the clue cards from the omitted character and mark out any clues referencing this character on the other characters’ clue cards. If you do not want to know the solution, do not view the final round of clues. For a complete surprise, you can elect the pre-printed ‘party ready’ party pack option from the mymysteryparty.com site and we will send you the clues in sealed envelopes –‘ready to go’ (this is an additional charge). The game is organized into three rounds. This is only a suggestion on how to play the mystery; the host can elect to do in any way. The game rounds are designed as follows: PRE-GAME: these pre-game clues are to be delivered to each guest before the party or give them to the guests as they arrive. All pre-game clues are optional and do not alter the mystery and are intended to enhance the pre-game build up for the event. These clues are not vital to solving the mystery. In this game, there are also pre-game tasks for the characters to perform. These pre-game tasks are optional and the omission of them does not alter the mystery in any way. APPETIZER HOUR / ROUND ONE: Deliver these clues as your guests arrive. DINNER HOUR / ROUND TWO: Deliver these clues while you serve dinner to your guests. DESSERT, HOT CHOCOLATE AND THE BIG REVEAL/ SOLUTION ROUND THREE: Deliver these clues with hot chocolate and dessert. HOW TO PLAY A MYSTERY GAME Guest Instructions Professional actors are great for mysteries but do not worry because you do not have to be a good actor – or an actor at all – to play a mystery game! The only quality that you need to possess is the ability to have a blast! The mystery party is separated into 3 rounds. During the party, you will be handed an envelope that contains the clues necessary for your character for the round. The clues will provide everything that you will need to solve the mystery. However, during the investigation segment of the game, you will need to ask the right questions and pay close attention to other guests’ clues to be able to get the whole picture of what has happened. In each of your clue cards, there will be some information that you can reveal in casual conversation with other guests. You can elect to have some of those clues as information that you should be ‘asked’ by other guests in order to reveal. You can hide the truth but do not lie and make up clues. This could alter the mystery for the other guests. Some of the information in your clue cards might be for actions to perform during certain rounds or to personal information to explain to you how your character feels about certain issues involving other characters or situations. These types of clues do not need to be revealed to the other guests. Most of the party play will involve mingling with the other characters and finding out about each other's characters and about the clues you all have received. As the game progresses, you should have quite a bit of information to filter through to figure out the motive and criminal! You will be asked to submit a guess of ‘whodunit’ and why they did it at the end of round two. From this point forward, you are to remain in character until the mystery is solved. If you are playing a ‘green alien from Mars’, then that is who you are until the end! Undoubtedly, your host has cast you into a character that you are comfortable playing. There are some characters that are designed to be played more reserved than other characters that should be played more boisterous. Feel free to play your role however you feel comfortable. Feel free to embellish your character’s personality if you would like. However, if you are feeling more reserved tonight, you can opt to allow the other characters to approach you or you can simply listen in on others’ conversations to get your information. Not everyone needs to or should have the spotlight!

OPTIONAL PRE-GAME ROUND Host Instructions: Before the party, encourage your guests to view this mystery on the www.mymysteryparty.com website or use the My Mystery Party invitations as they have the character list and the game synopsis included. This way, before the party, they can get familiar with the other characters that will be at the party. This optional pre-game round is to be implemented approximately one week before the party. Please note that this round is to generate pre-game excitement and is not necessary to solve the mystery. The ways to deliver these clues are as follows:

Cut and paste the clues from the PDF file into an email and send them to your guests.

Print these clues and send them to your guests via snail mail - USPS.

You can hand these to your guests as they arrive before you give the round one envelopes.

PRE GAME CLUES: (The following clues can be emailed or need to be cut out and put into sealed envelopes and labeled with the appropriate character and round.)

T.L., The Polytech Parrots will be facing the Flagstone Fighting Farmers in the upcoming Homecoming game. Paul the Polytech Parrot is feeling great and is ready to motivate us all to another sweet victory. So don’t miss practice and let’s get fired up for this very important game! Roy Acheman Quarterback Remember: your character is the brains of the field! You are the President of the Math Club, a member of the Chess Club and you have never earned anything below an ‘A’ on an assignment! You are also a big heart breaker and all girls have a crush on you! www.mymysteryparty.com

THERE WILL BE A PRE GAME CLUE FOR EACH CHARACTER IN THE PURCHASED GAME

ROUND ONE – APPETIZER HOUR WELCOME TO THE ASSEMBLY! Host Instructions: Round one – yummy snack hour begins as the guests arrive. Create a football ambiance with a fun party mix CD playing softly, football decor (i.e. football player posters, etc.), and football movies without the audio (i.e. We are Marshall, etc.) if there is a television in the party room. Yummy drinks (fruit punch garnished with fruit, mini milkshakes, etc.) and yummy snacks should be served and a round one envelope should be handed to each guest. Make sure the guest instructions (page 4) and the character descriptions (page 2) are available for the guests to review. Print the character list from the free invitations on the www.mymysteryparty.com website that omits the ‘required vs. optional’ if possible. You can also creatively display the clue-containing envelopes on a table for the guests to locate their own character names. Paul the Polytech Parrot (i.e. a printed picture of a parrot, a stuffed parrot, etc.) should be displayed in a major place for the party guests to view. OPTIONAL: At the beginning of this round, the ‘Football Hoop Challenge’ can be played and at the conclusion of this round, the ‘Marvelous Football Rap’ game can be played. PROP LIST: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready.

• You will need a stuffed parrot or a printed picture of a parrot in a real/fake cage to display as Paul the Polytech Parrot.

• If the hoop challenge is played, a Nerf football and a hula hoop are needed. • If the optional rap contest is played, you will need a source of rap music beats for the teams to perform

their raps to.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AT THE BEGINNING OF ROUND ONE: The Awesome Football Hoop Challenge The objective is to be the one to throw the most footballs through the hula hoop! Game Instructions: Line up the guests. One player (or the parent host) must hold a hula hoop at designated lengths away from the player in the front of the line (i.e. 10, 15, 20 feet, etc.). The player is handed the football and must throw the football inside of the hoop for 5 points for the closest hoop, 10 points for the second closest hoop and 15 points for the furthest hoop. Once the player has had three tries at the various hoop distances, the player will either go to the back of the line for another turn or sit as part of the audience until the next game. The next player in line gets a turn at throwing the football through the hoop at the various distances, and so on until everyone has had a turn. The host can decide how many turns the players should have before the points are totaled and a winner is declared. The winner is the one with the most points at the conclusion of the game. In the event of a tie, a ‘throw off’ will need to be played. The host should hold the hoop further than before and each player should get one try. If there is still a tie among any players, the host is to back up further and repeat the process until a winner is declared. Equipment needed: A Nerf football and a hula hoop. It is advisable to mark off areas of the yard/ floor to determine where the hoop holder should stand and where the player should not cross to keep the difficulty of the distances even between players. Playing time is approximately 15 minutes.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AT THE CONCLUSION OF ROUND ONE: The Marvelous Football Rap Song Contest The objective is to be the most talented rap artist at the party! Game Instructions: Pair the guests into groups of 2. Give the teams 10 minutes (or more) to create a unique 30 second football rap song to be performed for the rest of the group. No need to be a good or technically sound rap artist - just be unique and rap about your football skills! Both members of the team must rap either all or part of the song! When the time is up and / or the guests are finished creating their songs, one at a time, the guests are to perform their rap songs for the other guests. The host will judge or the guests will vote via a ballot for the best football rap song. In the case of a tie, the host will be the tie-breaker. Equipment needed: None needed. Playing time is approximately 30 minutes. ROUND ONE CLUES – CUT OUT, STUFF INTO ENVELOPES AND LABEL WITH THE APPROPRIATE ROUND AND CHARACTER Pass these out to the guests to begin round one.

ROY ACHEMAN – ROUND ONE. CLUES TO REVEAL DURING THIS ROUND During this round, mingle with other guests to discuss the following information with whomever you choose:

• Tell 2 people of your choice that it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you pulled a mean prank and made the rest of the team believe that the rival team – the Flagstone Fighting Farmers – did it. Say that you think that the team would be so angry that it would pump everyone up to defeat them in the Homecoming game later tonight! Say that you wouldn’t lose the game for sure if you did something like that!

• Talk to everyone about how Coach Morningstar hasn’t really been treating Mickey Irving nice lately. Say that you can’t believe Coach Morningstar made Mickey run 10 laps for being 30 seconds late to the field when the same morning, you were 3 minutes late and didn’t have to do any laps!

PERSONAL CLUES TO CONCEAL

• You know you are Coach Morningstar’s favorite player on the team, but you don’t like to rub it in. You are aware that is exactly why the coach didn’t make you run laps…you have never had to run laps for doing anything wrong!

• You are trying hard to think of a cruel prank to pull on the team to make them angry at the Farmers…but you can’t quite think of something good enough…yet.

During the mystery, your character must be honest and not make up any potentially mystery-altering clues in addition to those provided to you. You do not, however, have to share the clues that you collect with other guests.

ROUND TWO – DINNER HOUR Host Instructions: A light dinner should be served to the guests to start this round (dinner is optional). When the guests have finished dinner or to just start the round without dinner, make the announcement that Paul the Polytech Parrot is missing (see your announcement below). Pass out the envelopes for round two to the guests and encourage them over the next 30 minutes to investigate each other using the information in both their round one and round two clues. At the conclusion of this round, give the guests a time period in which to fill in their final guesses as to whodunit on the 'Mystery Investigation Sheet' (page 25+). Collect the guess sheets from your guests at the conclusion of this round. At the conclusion of round two, the ‘What Athletic Thing Am I?’ game can be played (page 19). Print out the athletic items sheet (page 20), cut them out and affix tape to the back of them. Prop list: These are props needed for this round. Collect these items in advance and have them ready!

• If the optional ‘What Athletic Thing Am I?’ game is played, the athletic item sheets (page 20) need to be cut out and tape needs to be affixed to the back of them.

• The Mystery Investigation Sheets (pages 25). • The message from the bird thief (below).

**Before you make the following announcement, ask the guests to go into another room for any reason that you choose (i.e. the kitchen to get a drink, etc.). Take Paul the Parrot out of the cage and hide him in a place appropriate for the ages of the guests. *The guests will hunt for him at the conclusion of the game. Coach Morningstar’s announcement: “Team, I have some horrible news. Paul the Polytech mascot is missing! I found this note in the bottom of his cage. Let me read it to you now:”

Cut out this message and read from it to the guests:

Your mascot parrot is safe and sound. Hunt for him and he will be found.

He never left the ‘A Wing’ of Polytech High School. And the awesome person who took him is very, very cool.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITY AT THE CONCLUSION OF ROUND TWO: The ‘What Athletic Thing Am I?’ Game! Objective: to be the first one to correctly guess the sports related item on your forehead and / or to not be the last one to figure out what sports related item you’re wearing on your forehead! Game Instructions:

Print out the ‘What Athletic Thing Am I?’ game sheet and cut out the squares. Affix tape to the back of each square and to start the game, affix a random athletic item sheet onto their forehead. Do not show the guests the athletic item that is being affixed to their forehead and make sure that there are not any mirrors or highly reflective surfaces in the party room during this game. When all of the guests have a sheet attached to their forehead, the game begins. The guests are allowed to ask each person one and only one ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question (i.e. ‘Am I big?’ or ‘Do I have anything to do with soccer?, etc.’) No deception is allowed – that would be cheating - so all guests must answer the questions truthfully.

The object is to figure out what athletic related item is on the sheet that is affixed to their forehead. If a player has asked every guest at the party a yes/no question and still cannot guess the athletic related item on their forehead, he may start the cycle over with the first person that they asked a yes/no question and continue until the player can correctly guess the athletic related item. There is one winner and one loser in this game. The winner is the first to correctly guess the athletic related item and the loser is the last standing without a correct guess of the athletic related item on their forehead. Equipment needed: a printed copy of the athletic related item sheet (page 20). Playing time is approximately 5-10 minutes.

Athletic related item squares for the ‘What Athletic Thing Am I?’ game. Print and cut out along the dotted lines. ROUND 2 CLUES – CUT OUT, STUFF INTO LABELED ENVELOPES WITH THE APPROPRIATE CHARACTER AND ROUND. TO BEGIN ROUND 2, PASS OUT THESE ENVELOPES TO THE GUESTS.

LARRY HAYLOR – ROUND TWO.

• You know T.L. very well. You know that his mother watches his every move. One time, he borrowed money from you to purchase a video game and later that night, T.L.’s mother brought him to the store to return the game and then to your house to return your money to you…with an extra $2.00 of T.L.’s allowance money as interest! This is one mother that has her scene under complete control!

• You know that Roy Acheman would do anything to get the team fired up to win the Homecoming game. If he thought for a second that stealing the parrot could guarantee a win…he’d definitely do it.

• Victor Bailey is the forensic expert – make sure that he is helping to lead the investigation.

• To find the location of Paul the Parrot, you should know that the gym is across the hallway from the locker room in the “A wing” of Polytech High. Of course you know this…you’re a football player! In order to locate the mascot, you’ll need a map of the “A wing” of Polytech High. Use the diagram on your Mystery Investigation Sheet and ask your teammates if they have any further information about the arrangement of the 6 main rooms of the “A Wing” such as the Cafeteria, Library, Locker Room, Gym, Band Hall, and Front Office.

• You should ask around to see if anybody knows of any other possible motives for stealing the mascot. The one with the biggest motive is probably the thief!

The athletic item squares are in the purchased game.

Every character will have a round 2 clue in the purchased game.

ROUND THREE– DESSERT, HOT CHOCOLATE AND ‘THE BIG REVEAL’ Host Instructions: This is the final solution round. Serve dessert and hot chocolate to the guests. Accusation session: after you collect the Mystery Investigation Sheets, allow the guests to one by one accuse the person who they feel is responsible for stealing Paul the Polytech Parrot. Ask that they point to the person and explain why and how they believe that they did it. Pass out the round three envelopes to your guests and have them sit in a circle or semi-circle in order to be able to see guests as they read their solution cards one at a time to the group (as in the accusation session above). After you announce the guesses to the group, instruct the guests to stand up in front of the group and read their final solution round card one at a time in the exact order that is directed by the solution round cards starting with ROY ACHEMAN. THE FINAL HUNT: After the thief reads his solution, allow the guests to hunt for Paul the Parrot (i.e. printed picture or stuffed parrot) – which you hid during round one. Explain to the group what the boundaries of the hunt are that you’ve chosen. Say that Paul was not found in the front office of the ‘A’ Wing of Polytech so he must have escaped and so he can be anywhere (within your boundaries). It is optional to have a prize for the winner who finds him. After Paul is found, proceed to the optional Charades activity. The optional activity, ‘Sports Charade Challenge’ can be played at the conclusion of this round.

ROUND THREE OPTIONAL ACTIVITY SPORTS CHARADE CHALLENGE Game objective: To earn a point by being the player that is first to guess the charade correctly! The winner is the player with the highest point total! Game instructions: One player draws a charade topic from a hat and acts it out for the other players. The first one to correctly guess the charade topic gets a point. The next player will draw a topic from the hat and act it out until one of the other players guesses it correctly and this will repeat until all of the topics are guessed correctly. *The game can also be played in teams and the player who is acting out the charade will act out the charade for everyone in hopes that their team will guess the charade correctly first. If the opposing team guesses the charade - the point will not go to them, but will be a ‘no score.’ You can only win a point if your player is acting out the charades. The actor of the charade may not speak, point to an object, or acknowledge the other players until they give a correct guess. Either type or write the charade topics on equally sized pieces of paper fold them and put them inside of a hat or other container. The charade topics are as follows: CHARADES TOPICS ARE IN THE PURCHASED GAME. Equipment needed: Paper, pen (or word processing program and printer), and a hat (or any container to hole the pieces of paper with the charade topics). Playing time ~30 minutes

ROY ACHEMAN– FINAL SOLUTION ROUND THREE – READ FIRST Say the following to the group: “I admit that I thought about taking the mascot and hiding him in a safe place and leading you guys to believe that the Flagstone Fighting Farmers broke into our locker room and stole him. I thought the anger that you would have for the Farmers for stealing him might give you an added push to win the game. Then, two things came into my mind immediately. The first thing is that I’ve never stolen anything or done anything against the rules. So, I couldn’t have done it anyway. The second is that I didn’t want to jinx the game by Paul the Parrot not giving his motivational speech to the team. Then if we lost the game because I was foolish and hid him…I would never forgive myself. So I am not the one who did it. What about you, Larry, we all know that you’re ready for your annual Homecoming prank!” LARRY HAYLOR IS NEXT
