JIM SCOTTHead Coach(Luther College)(18th Season)

Jim Scott is the architect of therebuilding of the Aurora Universityfootball program. Hired by AU in 1985,Scott was given the task of re-starting

the football program, which the school had dropped in1952.

Dipping largely into the pool of local and regional talent,Scott has built an unparalleled success story. He had fiveconsecutive winning seasons (after finishing 1-4 in 1986and 4-5 in 1987) between 1988 and 1992, and again in 1996(5-4). In 1988 and 1989, he produced records of 7-2 and8-1, respectively. However, his greatest legacy, thus far, came in the 1992 season when the Spartans were a perfect9-0 during the regular season and received their first-everNCAA football playoff bid. By virtue of its playoff berth, AUalso had the honor of being the first Chicagoland team toever participate in the NCAA Division III football playoffs.

Scott’s overall record in his 17 seasons at the AuroraUniversity helm is 91-60-3.

Success is certainly no stranger to Scott, who was aprominent high school coach for 20 seasons prior tojoining AU. His tenure in the prep ranks produced a121-58-4 mark in stints at Sterling and Marseilles highschools. His tutelage at Sterling produced sevenconference championships and six playoff appearances forthe Golden Warriors. For his efforts, Scott was elected tothe Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hallof Fame in 1987.

Scott is a 1961 graduate of Luther (IA) College, where hewas a four-year letterwinner in football for the Norse. Heholds a BA in math, with a minor in physical education. Heearned his MA in guidance and counseling from IllinoisState University in 1967. He and his wife, Lorraine, residein Aurora.

2003Spartans Roundup

4 AU Football

The 2003 Aurora University Spartans football team is outto recapture what they feel is theirs – the Illini-BadgerFootball Conference crown and a berth into the NCAADivision III championships. Head Coach Jim Scott (91-60-3)enters his 18th season at the helm of the Spartan attack.Since 1998, Scott’s Spartans are 32-3 in the Illini-Badgerconference and have been the conference champions threeof the first five years of the conference’s existence.

Leading the way for the Spartans will be an experiencedoffense, led by a trio of offensive linemen, junior captainBen Adolph (Milledgeville HS), senior captain Joe Coronado(West Aurora HS), and junior Nick Turvey (Plainfield HS).The three will anchor the offensive line along with seniorAaron Bohn (Rockton Hononegah HS), junior Brian Kaltsos(Plainfield HS), and several talented newcomers who look toopen holes for a talented core of running backs thatincludes returning 1,000 yard rusher senior Geary Pryor(Willow Run HS) (176 att, 1.095 yards, 15 TD) and seniorGrant Shields (Plainfield HS) (39 att, 225 yards, 1 TD).“Offensive line looks to be a strength on our team. Betweenthe returners with experience and our newcomers weshould be nine to ten deep at a key position,” Coach Scottstated.

Junior quarterback Kyle Daniels (Prairie Central HS) (79-140, 1264 yards, 11 TD) returns to lead as the signal caller forthe Spartan attack. Challenging Daniels will be sophomoreJoe Folliard (McHenry HS) and freshman Andrew Hornung(Palm Bay HS) Folliard may also see time this year as a widereceiver. “Folliard is a talent and guys like him find a placeto play. But the quarterback competition will be a good onewith three very talented individuals vying for the position. We have also added several new skilled speed type guys at

the wide receiver position and will lead to a balancedoffensive attack,” Scott said. Heading up the wide receiverposition will be Folliard, depending on the quarterbackbattle, and sophomore Troy Blaser (Aledo HS) (4 rec, 96yards). Returning tight end sophomore Nate Fincham(Ridgeview HS) (3 rec, 50 yards, 2 TD) will continue to be ago-to guy in the red zone as well as a key cog in the Spartanground attack.

The defense will have a different look to it this season, returning just two starters, senior captain defensivelineman Steve Messina (Plainfield HS) (54 tackles, 10 forloss, 2-1/2 sacks) and junior captain defensive back RyanSchrader (Kaneland HS) (47 tackles, 1 int). Scott said thedefense, “We will be very inexperienced on the defensiveside of the ball. The players competing for positions aregood athletes, just unproven. Being so inexperienced atcornerback is a bit of a concern though.”

The special teams in 2003 will be a promising area for theSpartans. Senior Ryan Glab (McHenry HS) (5-5 FG, 22-30PAT) returns to handle the kickoffs and extra points. “Ourkicking game will be a plus for us; returning your kicker isalways a good thing,” Scott said. The three-year starterlooks to finish up a nice career as a Spartan. SophomoreEric Guthrie (Triopa HS) will handle the job as the Spartanspunter. Anchoring the punt and kickoff return game in the2003 campaign will be sophomore Troy Blaser (punt returns16 att, 95 yards – kick return 16 att, 306 yards), and seniorGrant Shields (kick return 7 att, 158 yards).

The 2003 Spartans look to recapture the title as Illini-Badger Conference Champions. With a core group oftalented returners and a very talented group of newcomers, good things will come to Aurora University.
