2018 ANNUAL FOOT TRAFFIC REPORT | 1
FOOT TRAFFIC REPORT | 2018 Year in Review
GasBuddy examined more than 101 million consumer visits to fuel and convenience retailers in 2018. This data provides actionable insights into consumer behavior and the factors that influence foot traffic.
HIGHLIGHTS:
Costco Claims the Top Spot in 2018Washington-based Costco (250 - 999 locations) captured the most foot traffic per station of any brand in any segment—more than five times the industry average in 2018. Other annual segment winners include Ohio-based Speedway (1,000+ locations), Kentucky-based Thorntons (50 - 249 locations), and Indiana-based Ricker’s (30 - 49 locations). Ricker’s was recently acquired by GetGo—another top-performer. (#5 in the 50 - 249 locations)
Fueling on FridaysFriday was the busiest day for fuel and convenience retailers in 2018, followed by Saturday (2) and Thursday (3). Friday at noon and 5 p.m. Saturday at 4 p.m., Friday at 3 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. round out the top five busiest times.
Memorial Day Weekend #1 Holiday for RetailersExamining the major driving holidays of 2018 including Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, Memorial Day saw the most uplift in foot traffic across fuel and convenience (45%) as well as other major on-the-go retail categories, including hotels (100%), auto rental (40%), quick service restaurants (35%), casual dining (33%) and coffee shops (38%).
Pilot and Wawa Tie for #1 in the Most StatesTwo brands, Pilot and Wawa, tied for the number one spot by achieving the highest average foot traffic in five states. Costco and Cumberland Farms came in a close second with four wins, and Kroger and Speedway round out third by winning three.
Customer Service: Love it or Hate itWhether it’s good or bad, customer service makes an impression. Less than five percent (4.91%) of GasBuddies’ written reviews for customer service were neutral, while reviews with positive or negative sentiment comprised the remaining 95 percent. This also has an impact on consumer foot traffic. In 2018, fuel and convenience retailers with above-average customer service ratings attracted 25 percent more foot traffic than their below-average counterparts.

WHEN DO GASBUDDIES VISIT GAS STATIONS?Although fuel and convenience retailers are destinations for the morning coffee run, they’re relied upon by consumers at all times of the day—especially the lunch hour and evening commute. The two busiest hours throughout 2018 were Fridays at 12:00pm and 5:00pm.
Are You Prepared for the Digital Search Revolution?Did you know that 82% of U.S. smartphone users have performed a “near me” proximity-based search? This trend continues to grow, and it’s changed how consumers find and navigate to local businesses. Millions rely on major location platforms—Google Maps, GasBuddy, Waze, and more—to find what they need, at the very moment they need it.
Is your brand visible wherever consumers search? Unfortunately, many fuel and convenience retailers do not have accurate information on these location platforms. This not only leads to confusion, but it causes their information to look untrustworthy—and become deprioritized in search results.
The Listings Management solution from GasBuddy Business Pages can cleanse your data and publish accurate information to every major platform. Our clients have seen results as high as a 30X return on their investment. For additional information, visit business.gasbuddy.com

RATINGS AND FOOT TRAFFIC How do above and below-average stations fare in terms of foot traffic? .
More than 10.2 million individual ratings were submitted by GasBuddy users in 2018. This real-time consumer feedback not only provides retailers with insight into the customer experience at their stores, but is reflective of the fact that today’s customers care about quality—and tend to vote with their feet.
We conducted an analysis to determine how the foot traffic at stations with above and below-average ratings differs from the industry average.
Analysis: Today’s customers expect high-quality retail experiences. Factors that are easily evaluated prior to a visit—such as forecourt cleanliness and outdoor lighting—make a significant difference in whether a station drives visits or deters them. According to a 2018 GasBuddy survey, 82.5% of frequent convenience store customers said that “store design and upkeep” influences whether or not they visit a store. The same was said about the “cleanliness of the fueling area” by 79.7% of respondents. Retailers who monitor customer experience ratings across their brand can quickly identify individual locations that fall short of their standards and take steps to improve them.

CUSTOMER SERVICE DRIVES OR DETERS VISITSBrands that excel at customer experience capture more visits
It’s essential for retailers of all sizes to monitor consumer feedback across their brand. The good, the bad, the in-between—all of it. When specific sites fall below brand standards, quick corrective action can be taken before reputations are damaged and customers lost. When high-performing outliers exist, lessons can be learned and applied to other stations.
Customer service is a unique category since it tends to polarize consumers one way or the other. Food, fuel pumps, and other aspects of the experience generate many neutral reviews. But less than 5% of customer service reviews are neutral. Retailers should pay extra attention to this feedback when monitoring stations across their brand.
