The ingenious solutionifm pressure switch of the series PK won “Leonards trophy2004” in the category “Best measuring tools, sensors, modules for field applications”.The compact ifm pressure switch of the series PK is the firstelectronic pressure switch to feature a successful combina-

tion of very easy setting and high long-term stability. The easy handling is fascinating: The radial setting rings with a unit scaleallowing optimum reading enables each user to adjust the setpoint and resetpoint.

Reddot Design AwardSince 1955 the Design Centre Northrhine Westphal-ia has awarded its famous dot to internationallyoutstanding product design. An international group of judges gave the re-spected Reddot design Award 2004 to ifm elec-

tronic for the stainless steel ProcessLine modules. The modules are particularly suited for applications with extreme cleaningconditions due to their high protection rating, the stainless steel housing andthe simple, efficient mounting.

i-stepi-step stands for particularly innovative solutions from ifm electronic. i-step products open up horizons for technological visions and close gaps inyour applications. Moreover, they offer excellent price /performance ratios.Apart from this so called i-step products ifm offers further innovative prod-ucts.

Winner of the Hermes Award 2005ifm electronic gmbh was awarded the Hermes Award at theHanover Trade Fair for the ”efector pmd“ distance sensor. Theaward, which is worth EUR 100,000, is one of the most valuabletechnology prizes worldwide. The ”efector pmd“ is an optical distance sensor with PMD tech-

nology (Photonic Mixer Device). The special feature of the sensor is the inno-vative on-chip time of flight measurement system, with the light receiverand signal processing integrated on one chip.

Award winnerefector octavis has won the ”Leonard’ trophy 2003“ in thecategory ”Best components and automatism periphery“.The compact diagnosis system efector octavis evaluatesvibration signals using the methods of frequency analysis.efector octavis is designed for the early detection of roll-

ing element bearing damage or unbalance. Acoustic emission is detected, the frequency spectrum is calculated and e.g. the rolling element bearingstate, the unbalance etc. are evaluated.

The RF identification system for production controlThe constant increase of the degree of automation in modern productionplants is increasingly supported by identification systems. Their tasks includefor example the control or release of production steps or the assignment ofinformation about each product.DTS125 is a compact and easy alternative for applications in which forexample optical identification is not possible due to the ambient conditions.DTS125 is the first RF identification system for AS-interface worldwide.

Leakage detection and energy cost reductionWith the efector metris compressed air consumption meter, ifm electronicprovides the user with a low-cost opportunity to precisely measure the cur-rent compressed air consumption as well as the total consumption. To do so,the sensor is mounted and adjusted in a pipe length at the factory.Due to the high sensitivity even minute quantities, like those that for exam-ple occur in case of leakage, are detected at an early stage and can be re-paired. Binary, analogue and pulse outputs, the display of current and accu-mulated flow as well as further functions like detection of gases (Ar, CO2,N2) provide a variety of options.

Object verification systemsIn assembly and handling technology, object verification systems are an inte-gral part in assembly monitoring. The 100 % testing of shape or positionbefore, during or after the individual assembly steps prevents complex andcost-intensive re-working or reject of material or workpieces. With a size of only 42 x 42 x 43.5 mm the efector dualis contour sensortakes us to a new dimension and can solve applications where mountingspace is at a premium.

CE With the CE marking the manufacturer documents that the units sold byhim adhere to the European directives for specified electrical equipment.

EHEDG The EHEDG (European Hygienic Equipment Design Group) prepares guide-lines for Europe concerning the requirements for measuring systems inmachines of the food and pharmaceutical industry.Units with the EHEDG marking have been tested and approved for the foodand pharmaceutical industry in accordance with these guidelines.

3A Units with this marking comply with the hygienic standards applicable in theUSA. They are approved for use in hygienic applications in the dairy industry.

UL / CSAor cULus

Units with this marking meet the requirements of UL (Underwriters Labora-tories Inc.) and CSA (Canadian Standards Association). In many cases thisapproval is a prerequisite for access to the North American market. cULus isa combined approval and corresponds to the two individual approvals CSAand UL.

CCC CCC (China Compulsory Certification) is a mandatory Chinese certificate forcertain products used in China. The products concerned are listed in a cata-logue as defined by the Chinese authorities. Proximity switches with a volt-age range higher than 36 V are subject to certification.

Standards and approvalsifm electronic, one of the internationally leading sensor manufacturers, pro-vides application solutions for all important areas of the food industry. Thesensors in this market segment are exposed to extremely rugged environ-ments. Therefore the requirements for the sensors used are extremely high.ifm electronic had independent tests on the sensors of the efector m T-series,OG wetline, OJ as well as the ProcessLine splitters and AS-i flatcables carriedout by an independent supplier of cleaning agents, the company Ecolab. Intheir certificates ifm electronic and Ecolab certify the resistance of the testedifm sensors to the detergents used in the test under the specified conditions. You can find more information on our website athttp://www.ifm-electronic.com/ifmgb/web/app_3.htm

Proximity switches Sensors forspecific use

Visit our website: www.ifm-electronic.com

Operating principleThe optical M12 sensor is based on the successful technology of theefectorm series and has the same advantages such as: easy fixing, easyalignment and operation as well as robustness. The M12 efectorm sensor with focussed, invisible light beam, a fixed rangeof 20 mm on almost all materials closes the gap between inductive sensorsand optical diffuse reflection sensors.High ingress-resistanceThe sensors of the M12 efectorm series are distinguished by their highingress resistance even in extremely harsh applications, for example in thefood and pharmaceutical industries.MaterialsThe reinforced 316L housing ensures higher tightening torques for mount-ing. The sensing face of PEI is resistant to mechanical damage. The gold-plated contacts of the connector and the captive laser-type label meet therequirements for harsh and extreme applications.Sensing rangeA sensing range of 20 mm is obtained when referred to the shade RAL 9005(dark black, semi-gloss). Referred to the shade “Kodak white” it is 50 mm.This sensing range is 25 times greater than the standard sensing range ofinductive proximity switches.

Easy handling due to fixedsensing range: sit and forget.

Robust stainless steel housing forhigher tightening torques.

High switching frequencies of1600 Hz for fast processes.

As inexpensive as an M12proximity switch.

IP 69 K and IP 68: Ingress-resistanteven under severe environmentalconditions.

Photoelectric proximity switch for harsh applications

Ingress-resistant in all applicationsdue to the high protection ratingsIP 67 and IP 69 K.

A real alternative to the Reed switchQuick adjustment and easy mountingThe cylinder switch can be easily inserted from above into the T-slot where itclicks home. For easy positioning of the correct switch point the switch cannow be moved in the slot. It is then permanently secured by tightening theslotted / hexagonal socket screw – that’s it!Long lifeNon-contact sensors virtually work without wear and often achieve a longerlife than Reed switches. This saves expensive repair and downtimes.Robust design and good fixingThe switch is locked in the slot, i.e. it is completely surrounded by it thusensuring mechanical stability. The moulded cable at the end of the switchprovides excellent strain relief.Five different cylinder profilesWe have developed special accessories in order to make the advantages ofthe new T-slot cylinder switch also available for all other common cylindertypes. The same switch can be fixed to clean line cylinders, tie rod cylinders,T-slot cylinders, integrated profile cylinders and cylinders with trapezoidalslot using only one screw.

Fail-safe inductiveproximity switches

and control monitors

Certified to EN 954-1, category 4PDF-M or PDF-S to EN 60947-5-3.

Suitable for operator andmachine safety.

Safe function without specialactuator (solves new applications).

Connection of the sensors to safetyPLCs, bus systems and logic modules.

Easy series connection of the sensors, also with mechanical switches.

Fail-safe inductive proximity switches, category 4 with M12 plug

Fail-safe inductive proximity switches –at last without magnets, actuators, etc.Fail-safe inductive switches from ifmA special counterpart such as a magnet or coded target is no longer neces-sary for the function of the fail-safe sensor. The fail-safe inductive switchdirectly detects metals such as stainless steel or mild steel. It operates withan enable zone which is monitored for target position and dwell time. Anadjustment mode facilitates mounting. With reduced mounting input up to 10 fail-safe sensors can be connected inseries in combination with further mechanical contacts. For the first time, the principle and advantages of inductive proximity switches can also beused for safety applications. A wear-free function due to the non-contactprinciple and a high protection rating guarantee high uptime of the ma-chines and installations.Non-contact and safe detection of products is now possible. For applicationsin conveying processes roller lever switches or counterparts such as magnetsare no longer necessary. The input and output signals of the sensors correspond to DIN EN 61131-2.They are therefore fully compatible with and can be connected to the inputsand outputs of a PLC. The possible connection to ifm evaluation relays, thebus system AS-i Safety at Work, PROFIsafe, Interbus Safety, safe PLC andlogic modules via TÜV-certified software modules facilitates use.

Detection of transparent bottles, films or packaging.

Sealed in all applications:IP 68 and IP 69 K.

High chemical resistance byusing special materials.

High switching frequency of 2,000 Hzfor fast processes.

Visible red light facilitatesalignment during mounting.

Detection of PET bottles, glass, andtransparent packaging materialsSpecialists for filling systemsIn the past, the detection of the transparent material PET (polyethyleneterephthalate) required complicated adjustment of the sensor to the applica-tion. This new system consisting of a retro-reflective sensor with polarisationfilter and a very fine prismatic reflector (accessory, art. no. E20722) is alreadyideally adapted for the detection of PET materials and glass. Being a “plug &play” system, it can be operated at once.Sealed and resistantThe high protection ratings IP 68 and IP 69 K guarantee absolute ingress resi-stance, even in applications subject to frequent cleaning processes, forexample the food industry. All the materials used, such as ABS housings andglass lenses are particularly suited for these environmental conditions.High switching frequencyThe sensors reach a switching frequency of more than 2,000 Hz. They aretherefore particularly suited for very fast processes. This high switching fre-quency applies over the whole temperature range.Visible red light / quick and easy mountingThe sensors operate with visible red light. This facilitates alignment duringcommissioning. The comprehensive range of fixing components made ofstainless steel ensure notably time-saving mounting. The complete system ismounted, adjusted and ready for operation in a very short time.

Sensors forquarter-turn actuators

Inductive sensors for valves Sensors forquarter-turn actuators

Visit our website: www.ifm-electronic.com

Inductive dual sensor for position feedback on valve actuatorsIntroductionIn industrial processes where liquids, air or gases are used valves serve fordosing and control. There is a wide variety of valve types, butterfly or ballvalves being the most common quarter-turn types. In large plants these valves are seldom operated manually. Usually pneuma-tic valve actuators are used for mechanical actuation. The valve positionmust be monitored electronically. On the one hand to provide a feedback tothe controller when a certain position (e.g. “open” or “closed”) is reached. On the other hand it is necessary to centrally monitor the valves.Mechanical switches are still often used for position feedback on the actua-tor shaft. For other solutions several proximity switches are used togetherwith a switch target for position detection. Disadvantage of these methods:Mounting is mechanically complex. During switch mounting the signal wirescan be reversed when they are connected in the top-mounted junction box.Where there are temperature fluctuations condensing humidity leads to cor-rosion and thus malfunction.

Dual sensors and mountingaccessories for all common valves.

Complete system solutions forvalve actuators.

Type IND for all actuators accordingto VDI/VDE 3845.

20 % cost reduction comparedto switchbox mounting.

Pressure switches and transmitters with M12 plugand temperature range of -25...125 °C (145 °C max. 1 h)with fast temperature compensation

Flush pressure sensors for integrationin aseptic processesThe electronic pressure sensors type PI with analogue output and switchingoutput have been adapted to the higher requirements of process technologyimplementing a number of innovations and a fundamentally new housingdesign. This mainly means:• Total accuracy of 0.2 %• Improved temperature decoupling• Fast temperature compensation• ”Automatic“ adjustment of the zero point• Inverse function of the analogue output (20...4 mA / 10...0 V)• ”Automatic“ adjustment of the upper and lower ends of the

analogue outputThe ”automatic“ adjustment functions can be performed by simply pressinga pushbutton. So the adjustment for the hydrostatic level measurementbecomes an easy operation adapted to the needs. The additional indicationin % referred to the measuring range enables the user to read and evaluatethe hydrostatic level quickly and without having to convert the actual ana-logue value.Technical detailsThe way the measuring cell is attached in the unit is specially important foraseptic processes. Using an elastic PTFE ring solves this problem in a uniqueway. A modular connection concept with the tried-and-tested ASEPTOFLEXsealing concept allows selection of the process connection depending onlocal conditions. Selectable country-specific pressure units: bar /mbar,kPa/MPa, psi and %.

Pressure transmitters with M12 plugand temperature range of -25...125 °C (145 °C max. 1 h)

An extraordinary sensor for safe operation:pressure sensor PM/PHReally maintenance-free!On the market for one decade, but still revolutionary and unequalled. Theceramic measuring cell (purity 99.9 %) lies on a Teflon flat sealing (FDA con-forming) and is prestressed on the medium side by means of a metal spring-ring seal – and all this integrated in the sensor.Stable and sensitive at the same timeThe decision not to use an O-ring for support or sealing the sensor has thefollowing advantages for the customer:• Service intervals and search for resistant O-ring qualities become obsolete.• Optimum cleanability not only of the new unit – important for aseptic appli-

cations.• The long-term stability of the ceramic measuring cell is fully used.• Overload and vacuum resistance even under difficult dynamic conditions

such as compressive oscillation caused by resonance.Reduced stock-keepingParameter setting of the sensors to the measuring point is possible via anoptional programming module. A modular connection concept with tried-and-tested ASEPTOFLEX sealing concept (Certification to 3A and EHEDG)allows the selection of the process connection in situ – see also page 62 f.

Drift-free operation for more than100 million pressure cycles.

Pressure sensors with G 1/4" process connection and M12 plug

Pressure sensors for secondary systemswith G 1/4" process connectionThe alternativeThe pressure sensors type PE have been designed for secondary systems inthe food industry where robust units with local display are required. Thehigh-purity ceramic measuring cell (Al2O3) in conjunction with the EPDMsealing ensure overload-free, long-term stable operation and high chemicalresistance. An extensive and clearly structured menu allows e.g. the country-specific selection of units (bar /mbar, Pa /MPa, psi) and output polarity(NPN/PNP).The applicationsAs opposed to the flush mountable sensors type PI /PM the PE sensors canbe used where• pure liquids are detected• chemical resistance to common cleaning agents as e.g. in food processes is

required (hot water, diluted alkalis and acids)• a simple imperial adapation is sufficient• cross contamination does not need to be excluded• a low-cost alternative is necessary.Special featuresThis range of sensors is distinguished by the high operational reliability andthe precision of the tried-and-tested ifm pressure switch technology togetherwith a high protection rating. High switch point accuracy (0.5 %) of the twoindependent set and reset points at minimum hysteresis (0.5 %) make thisvacuum resistant sensor a price-optimized unit for your peripheral processes.

Pressure monitoring in homogenizing plantswith ifm pressure sensors PY9970 / PY9000Monitoring homogenizationAn important work step, e.g. in the processing of milk or fat, is the homog-enizing of suspensions for the purpose of emulsion and flocculation stability. For a targeted and reproducible homogenizing process the pump aggregatemust be monitored or regulated with regard to pressure conditions.ifm offers two high-quality pressure sensors for this task. The pressure pick-up of the PY9970 consists of a membrane separator filled with an FDA con-form medium; at the end of this separator is a tried-and-tested pressuresensor with a ceramic-capacitive measuring cell for evaluation. The PY9000 does not require a membrane separator. The pressure sensorcan be integrated directly in the process by means of a wheel flange todetect the prevailing pressure directly by means of a drift-free and long-termstable ceramic measuring cell. The patented tried-and-tested measuring cellsupport ensures a long-term and safe operation in homogenizing applica-tions.Application exampleFor this purpose the analogue output of both pressure sensors can, forexample, be integrated in the control of the piston pump to define the pres-sure corridor for adjusting the aggregate to the nozzle gap. Since positive-displacement pumps move into critical pressure ranges with the vane closed,an emergency-stop can be effected within a few milliseconds via the set-point when a predefined maximum pressure is exceeded. This function couldalso be used as alarm function in the case of responding bypass systems.

Temperature switches with M12 plug

In the food industry, but also in other industrial applications, precise tempe-rature measurement is mandatory. Pasteurizing and fermentation processesin particular often take place in a temperature range of 60 °C to 70 °C. Inthis temperature range the two-wire temperature transmitter reaches itshighest accuracy of 0.1 K.Excellent dynamic responseHigh mechanical stability, but at the same time high dynamic response – acontradiction. But the temperature transmitter type TA was designed toreach an extremely good dynamic response and still provide high mechanicalstrength which makes the unit suitable even for fast control requirements.Flexible mounting possibilities simplify installationThe temperature transmitter TA is not only distinguished by its technicaldata, but also by its flexibility in mounting. In combination with the availableaccessories the following installation ways can be achieved.• Installation with common G 1/2" mounting adapters.• Installation with welding adapter E30055 (ball) and E30056 (collar).• Installation in pipes with progressive ring fitting E30016 (G 1/2") or

E30024 (NPT).• Installation with clamp adapter E34110 and combination with common

process adapters such as Clamp, DIN, Varivent etc.Adaption of the sensor viaa customary 1/2" fitting andthe sensor 1/2" process thread.

Adaption of the sensor via 1/2"process thread and weldingadapter like E30055, E30056.

Adaption of the sensors viaflush mountable clamp E34110.Further adaptions see page 62-65.

No calibration necessary – just fit and forget! No more calibrationIn many applications of the food and pharmaceutical industries the temper-ature sensors used must be calibrated regularly, which is very time-consum-ing and expensive. This is no longer necessary with the temperature sensorpresented here. The use of two different sensor elements that monitor each other in the pro-cess ensures that a developing sensor drift is detected and reliably diag-nosed. Furthermore, if one element fails, the process continues with thesecond measuring element (backup function).Via the diagnostic output of the sensor possible error states are directlytransmitted to the higher-level controller. Calibration, if required at all, iscondition-based.

The technologyIn this ifm-specific sealing variant the continuous elastic metallic edge of theadapter presses into the conical counterpart of the process connection. Thesurfaces of the stainless steel precision parts involved are only deformed inthe plastic or elastic range. This unique way of sealing based on the finiteelement method (FEM) can handle fast load and temperature changeswithout any problems. For more than 10 years this technology has been usedin aseptic applications. They fully meet the requirements of EHEDG and 3A.

The AS-i master controls the data communication of the connected slaves(modules). The Controller e contains up to 2 AS-i masters. Up to 31 single or62 A/B slaves can be connected per master. This means that up to 248 digi-tal I /Os or 248 analogue channels can be operated. In the gateway modethe Controller e works with higher-level bus systems such as Profibus. The sensors are supplied via the yellow AS-i bus cable and the special AS-ipower supply. If higher currents are required for actuators, a wide range ofstandard 24 V power supplies is available.By means of the repeater the cable can be extended to a total bus length of200 m. Because of the electrical separation two AS-i segments with separa-te supplies can be operated.SmartLine I /O module for the control cabinet:• Very slim modules with a width of only 25 or 50 mm.• Digital or analogue inputs and outputs.• Pt100 modules with direct linearized temperature transmission to the

The simple set-up of an AS-i network:with addressing unit, completely without softwareAS-i networks are easy-to-handle “plug & go” systems. They are set up in 3simple steps:1. Address module with addressing unit.2. Connect AS-i master and power supply to the yellow flat cable.3. Connect module with piercing technology to the flat cable.

– Ready !Field modules with piercing technologyCompactLine modules have integrated contact pins which can be connecteddirectly to the AS-i flat cable. The cable does not have to be cut, strippedand wired any more. Contacting of the ClassicLine modules takes place inthe separate flat cable lower part. They are also used for setting up bus bran-ches and spurs. The bus contact is fixed mechanically and is kept whenmodules are replaced.Analogue modules are available with all classical signals such as voltage, cur-rent, and temperature.

AirBoxes facilitate the connection of pneumatic actuatorsThe AS-i AirBoxes comprise one or two pneumatic valves, the AS-i bus con-nection and 2 or 4 electrical inputs. Because of the compatibility with theClassicLine modules the same flat cable lower parts can be used. All electri-cal and pneumatic connections are pluggable. This facilitates quick replace-ment in the case of failure. The AS-i AirBoxes replace the existing valves plusconnection cables thus reducing mounting costs.Versions with either complete supply via the yellow bus cable or with sepa-rate 24 V supply are available.Connection cables in stainless steel designfor connection of the sensorsThe listed ifm cables are specially designed for the high requirements of thefood industry. The materials PVC, high-grade stainless steel lock nut andgold-plated contacts, in conjunction with the high protection rating IP 69 K,are a guarantee for a safe and reliable connection.

ProcessLine – the revolution in wet areas, modules withhighest protection rating for direct installation in the field. The AS-i ProcessLine family provides completely new possibilities for buswiring. The still commonly used cost-intensive large stainless steel controlcabinets are becoming obsolete. Bus modules can be installed where theybelong, i.e. near the sensors and actuators. The fast and uncomplicated installation of the ProcessLine is done by meansof just one central screw. All electrical connections can be plugged into M12sockets. The status LEDs are integrated in one central diagnostic window.AS-i stainless steel insulation displacement connectorwetline for the simple connection of the AS-i and 24 V flat cable. This world-wide first insulation displacement connector with protectionratings IP 68 and IP 69 K makes the contact between the inserted flat cablesand the M12 socket by means of the piercing technology. AS-i slaves such asProcessLine modules can safely be connected via ifm connection cables forthe food industry.

Safety at Work is the extension of the existingAS-interface system for safety applicationsifm AS-interface for safety applications ”Safety at Work“AS-interface has become a standard for binary units in automation. Due tostandardisation in IEC 62026-2 and to its easy handling this system hasestab-lished itself all over the world. So far, the only still conventionally wiredsignals were the safety-related signals. With the AS-i extension ”Safety atWork“ this has now come to an end.Safety at Work reaches the highest control category 4 according to EN 954-1(IEC 61508 / SIL 3) and can thus even be used for emergency-stop applica-tions with the stop category 0 and 1. Approvals regarding safe data trans-mission are available from BGIA and TÜV.AS-i Safety at Work can be used for both new installations and for retrofit-ting of existing AS-i installations because it works with all standard masters. It must only be ensured that, when using repeaters, max. two repeaters maybe used. The ordinary AS-i 4-bit protocol is a prerequisite for the use of Safety atWork components. As standard masters and controllers are to be used, asafety protocol is generated by the safe slaves and monitored by a new AS-icomponent, the safety monitor. The safety monitor monitors all connectedsafety slaves and ensures switch-off or the triggering of the safety system inthe case of any disturbance.

Safety at Work – Control category 4to EN 954-1 (IEC 61508 / SIL 3).

Suitable for the use in emergency-stopapplications with stop category 0/1.

AS-i safety monitor, 1 or 2-channel.Safety function freely programmable.

AS-i SmartLine – Safe input modulefor the control cabinet.

Safe input slaves for Safety at Work.Safe emergency stop push-button.
