A Word From Our Pastor….

HOW DO WE WORSHIP? Malachi 1:6-10

Eugene Peterson translates this passage in Malachi in a brutally honest

confrontation. Keep in mind as you read, “Am I giving my best to God when I

come to worship (or serve) Him?”

“Isn’t it true that a son honors his father and a worker his master? So if I’m

your Father, where’s the honor? If I’m your Master, where’s the respect?”

God-of-the-Angel-Armies is calling you on the carpet: “You priests despise

me!” “You say, Not so! How do we despise You?”

“By your shoddy, sloppy, defiling worship.”

“You ask, ‘What do you mean, “defiling”? What’s defiling about it?” 7-8”When

you say, ‘The altar of God is not important anymore; worship of God is no longer a priority,’ that’s

defiling. And when you offer worthless animals for sacrifices in worship, animals that you’re trying to

get rid of—blind and sick and crippled animals—isn’t that defiling? Try a trick like that with your

banker or your senator—how far do you think it will get you?” God-of-the-Angel-Armies asks you.

9”Get on your knees and pray that I will be gracious to you. You priests have gotten everyone in trou-

ble. With this kind of conduct, do you think I’ll pay attention to you?” God-of-the-Angel-Armies asks

you. 10”Why doesn’t one of you just shut the Temple doors and lock them? Then none of you can get

in and play at religion with this silly, empty-headed worship. I am not pleased. The God-of-the-Angel-

Armies is not pleased. And I don’t want any more of this so-called worship!”

I don’t know about you, but this passage knocks me back on my heels. Because I believe each one of us are

guilty, at one time or another, of just playing church. Eventually, our worship becomes cold and empty. We

receive nothing from it and most of all, it is displeasing to God.

These Old Testament priests were dishonoring God because they refused to give their best to Him. They

sacrificed animals that were lame or diseased. In other words, they gave God what no one else wanted. I

wonder if we are not guilty of giving God the scraps of our life and keeping the good stuff for ourselves. We

may take pleasure from this type of worship, but God doesn’t.

A Word from Our Pastor continued…

We don’t sacrifice animals today. What does God call us to sacrifice? Look at Romans 12:1….

“And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is

truly the way to worship him.” (NLT)

To worship God in a pleasing manner involves giving Him our whole selves; our time, talents or gifts, money, most of all, our energy and effort. It always amazes me how little energy we have for the things of God. Sunday has become a day to sleep late, work on the car, go to the lake, spend time with the family...all these things are worthwhile but how does it fit in with giving our best to God?

Why do we need to be in church? First, because it shows you care. Jesus said in….

John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one

another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”

Paul told us in….

Romans 12:15 “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with

those who weep.”

We are a part of God’s family, What affects one of us affects all of us. We are a community of individuals committed to God and each other. Church attendance is a way of telling a brother or sister in Christ, I love you, how can I serve you? Jesus teaches us that we serve Him in the same way we serve others.

Matthew 25:40 “...Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to

one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me.”

Serving others is serving Christ

Your commitment and attendance to the church brings with it an encouragement that aids in the growth of the church.

Colossians 2:6-7 “As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, 7rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with

thanksgiving.”

Serving Him,

Pastor Bob

Why we love the church by Kevin Deyoung

If we truly love the church we will bear with her in her failings, endure her struggles, believe her to be the Bride of Christ and hope for her final glorification. I still believe the church is the hope of the world. Not because it gets it all right, but because she is a body and Christ is her head. Don’t give up on the church. The New testament doesn’t know anything about churchless Christianity. The church is for you and it’s for me. So I guess this is my advice. Find a good local church, get involved, become a member, stay there for the long haul, go to church this Sunday and worship there in spirit and in truth. Be patient with your leaders, rejoice when the gospel is faithfully proclaimed, bear with those who hurt you, give people the benefit of the doubt. While you are there sing like you mean it, say hi to the stranger no one notices, welcome the blue hairs and the nose-ringed, volunteer for the nursery once in a while, bring your fried chicken to the pot-luck like everybody else, invite a friend to church, take the new couple out for coffee, give to the Christmas offering, be thankful someone vacuumed the carpet, enjoy the Sunday’s that click for you and pray extra hard on the Sunday’s that don’t. God’s best idea for His people was the church. It was in Acts 2 and it is in 2019!
