Best and worst prepaid mobile packages inSouth AfricaTarifica has launched an index which ranks prepaid cellular plans, and has used it to analyseSouth Africa’s offerings.
By Staff Writer July 20, 2015 15 Comments
A new analysis from Tarifica has found that Telkom offers more highvalue prepaid cellular plansfor consumers than other mobile operators in SA.
Tarifica is a telecommunications pricing research firm which releases monthly rankings of mobileplans. The company’s had previously only indexed contract packages.
Like its contract package analysis, the prepaid index uses the Tarifica Score: an algorithm thatweighs different features of a mobile plan.
Features that are considered include usage allotments, geographic coverage, data speeds, valueadded features, and promotional elements.

These are weighed against the total cost of a planto determine its consumer value relative to otheroffers in a country. Scores range from 0 to 100.
Unlike contract plans, prepaid plans do not haveset usage allotments. To account for this, Tarificadecided to score them based on three userprofiles: light, medium, and heavy.
Each of these profiles define a minimum includedusage for voice, SMS, and data.
Plans with scores above 75 are designated TopValue Plans in each user profile. Across all profiles, 28 plans achieved this distinction – 15 ofwhich were from Telkom, followed by MTN with 8, Cell C with 4, and Virgin Mobile with 1.
Tarifica said Telkom had the highest scoring, or Top Overall Value Plans, for both the moderateand heavy user profiles. Cell C took the honour for the light user profile.
“Telkom had strong plans and a variety of options at virtually every price point. MTN and Cell Cwere each competitive in one or two profiles, but only Telkom’s plans provided strong consumervalue across the board,” said Tarifica.
Tarifica provided the following summary of operator performance:
Cell C’s plans performed well in the light user profile, based on having the cheapest perminute calling rate in South Africa and effective bundling.MTN performed best in the moderate and heavy user profiles capturing four Top Value Plans, has a relatively competitive perminute calling rate, and generous data promotion.Telkom captured three Top Value Plan positions in the light user profile, seven in themoderate user profile, and five in the heavy user profile. Its success was based on having thesecondcheapest perminute calling rate and aggressivelypriced SMS and data bundles.Virgin Mobile performed best in the light user profile, based on an effectivelypriced bundle.Vodacom did not have any Top Value Plans due to its relatively high perminute and perSMSrates, although it did score significantly better in the moderate and heavy user profiles than inthe light user profile.

A higher per minute rate can work out better than a per second rate if you call for 3+minutes I did a calculation once and worked out per minute was much better for me thanper second.. I'm with Vodacom prepaid and pretty happy with it..

Been using Vodacom since 2003. In the past few years I've tried out the other SP's, CellC has unreliable network coverage, Telkom Mobile as well. I found MTN expensivebecause most if not all of my immediate family uses Vodacom, so I stuck to Vodacom. I'mhoping they slash their data prices soon because if they don't, I will make it my mission tomigrate all of my family to a better SP.

I have been with all the Networks thusfar and I can tell you there are no otherNetwork that can beat TM on prepaid and given that you are on SimSonke. Or justbuy yourself a SimSonke Simcard pack at any retail store and you immediatelyget two blue SimSonke simcards inside your Simpack. Ready to start off withyour 1st family member. Great way to communicate for free with your kidsstudying at University and youre staying in the countryside. Or to communicatewith family far afield.

You will be able to make calls to any other Network at 75c per min(BTW it is the cheapest at the moment). You will also be able to browse at 29c perMb in out of bundle tarif. (Also the cheapest at the moment). And all SMS's arecharged at 29c per SMS to any network any time of the day. When reloading a

I stay in the most rural areas you can get and areon Telkom Roaming with great reception no compliments at the moment. Althoughroaming on MtN it has much much better connection than MtN itself. Now all thisis something to think about.

Are you on Telkom Mobile's SimSonke prepaid Tarif Plan. If not you are missingout big big time. I can promise you if you are on TM SimSonke you will see that itis for sure the cheapest. Even cheaper than Cell C. (That's Calls, SMS's, DataBundles and the cheapest out of bundle browsing @ only 29c per Mb)

Good point, Every year I say "Im sick of Vodacoms crap, I am findinganother SP"... and every year the alternatives are so poor that I end uprenewing anyway. I am thinking of buying a pigeon and training it to carry ausb flash disk, at least I can move my 4 GB quicker.
