Mr. J. W. Pehle, Executive Director War Refugee Board Washington, 25, D. C.

Dear Mr. Pehle:

5550 Ridge Avenue Philadelphia, 28, Pa. September 11, 1945

Sometime ago I had correspondence with you relative to the policies to be followed in connection with refugees located within the country; I am quite intj!!'ested in ascertaining the total number of refugees received by· this country, how many of them have ·,become citizens and how many will be returned to their native land and within what period of time.

If you are not in a position to furnish me with this information, I would appreciate it very. much if you.· would advise me to whom I might write to secure this data. . .

Very truly yours,

Mr. J. W. Pehle; EJ;:ecutive Director ., Viar Refugee Board ·

Wabhington 25; D. C.

Dear Mr, Pehle:

June 6, 1944

Vihile you did n9 t !mow a short. time ago .what tb.e policy "would be in re5ard to War refugees, Stinday newspapers carried statements from the Office or the President and yourself to the effect that plans are now under way to bring 1n a number of War refugees to th~s country to be located in fo1·mer Army training centers.

I am not heartless, nor am I unsympathetic, having gone through the last War and lmoviing what misery War presents. However, I am deeply concerned as to the social, political and economic situation of this· country in bringing in untold numbers of refugees who, in my opinion, :will never return from whence they came, aciding to problems which the future will find very. difficult to solve.

Will you please advise who i13 going to have ~1}.I!ervisi_g,n of these refugees, your office, the Immigration Bureau, or the Army or Nayy? .Y.i!!Q .. J .. ~

In my opinion there- is· a tre!nendous organized effort on- behalf· of various groups being.brought to this country which the general public.are not

. familiar with, and in my own opinion the American people are being taken for a grand and glorious ride with which you may not; be in full accord.

Will you please let me know who is to have ultimate jurisdiction over the War refugees coming to this country?.

Very truly yours;

Mr. John Pehle, Acting Executive Director Viar Refugee Board Room No. 2880z, Treasury Building Washington, 25, D. C.

Dear Mr. Pehle:

5550 Ridge Avenue Philadelphia, 28, Pa.

A short time ago I wrote to the· War Departme~t with referenc:e to the specific policies to be set up and followed in connection with the work of the Viar Refugee Board, I made inquiry as to just what these policies might be, with particular reference to establishing any of the refugees, either temporarily or permanently, in this country.

I am particularly interested in the question of immigration and the nuinber of refugees we already have here; and the effect of such immigration on our politieal, social and economic system,

Will you please advise me if ;irou have any. specif'ic

':. ! or general policy in this regard:. and i.f ·~ t ts the intent '!-~ · any way of the War Refugee Boa~d to bring in ·refugees to this . country, either-on a temporary or permanent basis, artd whether in small or large numbers. ·

Honorable Henry L. Stimson secretary of war "Nashington,~ D. C•

Sir:

5550 Ridge Avenue· Philadelphia, Pa~

Februaryl, 1941+

The papers have carried recently articles to the effect that the President has appointed a Committee· in the interest of the refugees in Europe, particularly the-Jewish refugees, ·aould it be possible for you to advise the undersigned as to the general policy of this Committee, particularly as to any, objective, which may be in view of bring:i'.ilg such refu:gees to

this country?

While every hwnan being is in_ sympathy with the serioushess of the situation existing in Europe, and which has existed for some years past, nevertheless we have to be c_areful that we are not injuring ourselves by attempting to absorb all the refugees in the World in this Country, - -

In my own mind I am of the definite opinion that· -we have-more than enough refugees in this Country at the_ present time who can be found in New York and other large cities; andwho have been spread throughout the Country. I am of the<opinion that we are faced with social, poiiticµ and economic problems which may be more dii'fiCult to solve after this War is over than the War itself, which is definite and concr~te• To dilute ourpepulation any more is apt to bring a,pout serious 'consequences when we have no unanimity of opinio1i in sP:ite of i;.he [email protected]_ed propaganda that you meet on all sides. __ - <:,

ThiS letter is written witl;l _<ill ser~;~sne~~' ·arid with a very deep concern as to the future of this• coilntry. _-I shall await with interest any reply which you maybe able to

make.

I am, Sir,

Respectfully yours,

signed _ vr. n • Fuller -
