Page 2 Fog of Love
Welcome Fog of Love is a card game for two players acting out a stormy love affair.
You will play from the very first sparks of attraction through meeting in-laws, awkward situations, argu-ments, parties, thoughtful gifts, secret affairs, kids, reconciliations to a hopefully happy ending.
Each player has a character made up from different personality traits that influence what they desire and what they want to avoid. You can become a one-legged, disorganised, cocky female pilot who gets a kick out of adventures; a kind, nerdy male TV celebrity that is ambitious and sensu-al; or a cute, flirtatious, impulsive and cynical female florist with a big nose-piercing. The possibilities are almost endless.
Will the characters end up in a satisfying relation-ship, perhaps even get married, or will it all end in a dramatic break-up?
You will learn what it takes to make the relationship work, build insights into each other and hopefully find out if your partner is sincere or just bluffing.
Each player alternately introduces crucial scenes with important choices to be made. As in real life, you will have to decide between what is best for you and what is best for the relationship and you will need to consider what your partner decides, as both of your decisions will have impact on the shared outcome. Balance, intuition and calculated choices are key to success in this romantic game, where both can end as winners and losers.
Overview of the GameEach player begins the game with several possible Story EndingS. Most of these will be secretly diScard-Ed as the game progresses.
In the FinalE each player has a few options left and will select the Story Ending that will apply to her or his charactEr. This will define the charactErS winning condition.
The chosen Story EndingS also determine how it at all ends, for example whether the charactErS end up Staying togEthEr or brEak up. This is important as avoiding brEak up is part of most winning conditionS.
Other key criteria for winning are the accumulation of (SatiSFaction) and achievement of trait goalS.
The game is structured into three chaptErS. chaptEr onE is sweet. More serious and dramatic aspects come into the characters lives during chaptEr two. And finally the tension increases in chaptEr thrEE up to the FinalE.
Each chaptEr has a lEngth, which is the number of Story cardS that will be played in the chaptEr. The game ends when the three chaptErS have been played. The FinalE card is the last card remaining and is activated after chaptEr thrEE is finished.
The game can end with both players winning, only one player winning or without any winnEr. How it ends is determined by each players Story Ending card.
The game includes 3 ScEnarioS (with unique chaptEr and FinalE cards plus special Story cardS). Some of them provide additional winning conditionS.
Components 1 Rulebook (this book). 1 gamE board. 2 dual-sided charactEr cardS (male/female). 3 predefined ScEnarioS in separate envelopes
(each ScEnario comes with a chaptEr onE, chaptEr two and chaptEr thrEE card and a FinalE.
2 card stands (1 blue and 1 pink).
Cards 100 Story cardS. 38 trait cards. 60 FEaturE cards. 30 occupation cards. 14 Story Ending cards (a blue and a pink set of 7 cards).
Main tokens 8 dEciSion tokEnS
(a blue and a pink set of tokens labelled A, B, C and D).
80 choicE point / -tokens (35 blue and 35 pink discs worth 1 choicE point / 1 and 5 blue and 5 pink cylinders worth 5 choicE pointS).
Role playingThis is a game of storytelling. You are each playing a imaginary character involved in an unpredictable romance. Its a comedy and it might also be a tragedy.
The more you infuse the game with your own imagination, the more rewarding it will be.
As long as you follow the rules for sharing infor-mation (p. 7) the game is designed to support fun dialogue and immersion. Go play!

Suggested setup and usage (scale 1:5)
Played Story cardS are placed next to the board. You can keep them next to the relevant chaptEr or you can put the cards for finished chaptErS under the relevant chap-tEr card (e.g. if you want to use less table space). The chaptEr has a lEngth of 8, so its finished now since there are 8 cards played (SEcrEtly playEd cards dont count). The next action will be to reveal the chaptEr two card.

Page 4 Fog of Love
Setup1. Put the gamE board on the table between the two players.
2. Decide what ScEnario to play (in the provided enve-lopes) and place the chaptEr and FinalE cards on the gamE board where indicated FacE down.
Follow any special instructions in the ScEnario.
3. Provide each player with a coloured set of tokEnS, charactEr card and card stand. One player will be blue and the other pink.
4. The scenario specifices what Story Ending cardS to use. Each player gets a set of their colour.
5. Each selects the gender of their character by flip-ping the appropriate side of their charactEr card up. Put the charactEr cardS on the gamE board.
6. Shuffle the trait cards. Deal 5 to each player. These may only be seen by the player that got them.
Each player selects 3 traitS to keep. Keep in mind that if you select opposing traitS (left and right arrow with the same symbol) it will become more difficult to get at gamE End. traitS with the same symbol also have special requirements (see page 7).
The 3 chosen traitS are placed on the players card stand. The trait deck and diScardEd trait cards are put on the gamE board where indicated.
7. Deal 3 random occupation cardS to each player.
Each player selects 1 occupation and places it on the gamE board FacE up.
The occupation cards that arent used can be put way.
8. Deal 5 random FEaturE cardS to each player.
Alternating each player will give a FEaturE to their partner, who places the FEaturE card FacE up on the gamE board where indicated. This is done until each player has received 3 FEaturES. The FEaturE cardS that arent used can be put way.
9. Each FEaturE and occupation card has a symbol with a pErSonality Factor inside either a left or right arrow. For each symbol on your cards place a choicE point of your colour at the appropriate place on the pErSonality track on the gamE board.
Each player thus begins with 4 choicE pointS.
10. Sort the Story cardS into the 3 Story card decks. Each card has a symbol indicating where it belongs.
Put the decks on the gamE board where indicated.
Give each player 5 Story cardS. You begin with the following cards: 3 SwEEt, 1 SEriouS, 1 drama.
Introduce the charactersNow you are ready to introduce the charactErS to each other.
What is your charactErS name? Dont use your own. You are playing a fictional charactEr and not yourself.
Other things to consider and talk about, perhaps even role play: What did you especially notice about the other? What do you appear to have in common? What relationship challenges do you anticipate?
Remember: Dont give away secrets, use your imagina-tion and role play as much as you want.
You are ready to play your first game. Enjoy!
You will first turn the Chapter One card faCe up and resolve it. Then a randomly selected player will play the first StOry Card.
Sharing informationWhat may you not do? (unless allowed by a StOry Card) Reveal your Story cardS on hand. Reveal your Story Ending cardS. Reveal your traitS and your goalS. Openly discuss about what would be the best
thing to choose in simultaneous or individual choicES.
What can you do? Talk about your relationship in overall terms
and where you want it to go (not necessarily honestly).
Indicate that you are happy or unhappy with choicES already made.
In other ways role play your character to give flavour and life to the game.
You may indicate (in vague terms) that you are on top in a situation and that you can help fix a challenge.
-

How to playDetermine starting player randomly.
Sequence of play play: Play a Story card from your hand. draw: Draw Story cardS to your hand so you end
up with 5 cards. Players alternate playing cards until the number of cards played is equal to chaptEr lEnght (as indicated on the current chaptEr card). Then you turn the next chaptEr card (this does not count a player action).
Deck typesYou may only draw from the deck that is indicated on the current chaptEr card. In the lower right corner there are one or more coloured dots that correspond to the deck types.

The three deck types are SwEEt: Romantic or sweet experiences. Many of them without larger consequence.SEriouS: The serious and important things that happen in life. Some of them are about how the relationship is evolving.drama: Surprises, conflict and change. Large effects and lots of risk.
chaptEr onE cardThe first card played is the chaptEr onE card. It is only special in the sense that it indicates how you met and how the story begins. After resolving the chaptEr onE card the first player plays a Story card.
Playing a Story cardWhen you play a card all information on it should be available to both players (unless it is a SEcrEtly playEd card). You can read it aloud or put it on the
Some cards have additional EFFEctS.This is primarily if you match in your choicES or if you have selected a specific combination of choicES. These additional EFFEctS are resolved as all other effects.
diScarding and rEtriEving Story End cardsAn important effect on some Story cardS and on all chaptEr Two and chaptEr thrEE cards is about diScarding or rEtriEving Story Ending cards. This will to a high degree influence the options you have for winning the game and how you play. If you are asked to diScard a card that is already diScardEd you ignore the effect. The same applies to rEtriEving cards that you already have on hand.
Special case: below 0You cannot have negative . You can only lose the positive that you have accumulated.
Special card: rEactionSrEactionS can interrupt or change the resolution of a Story card. rEactionS can not be played in response to a chaptEr or a FinalE card.
table dependending on what you prefer. Most cards provide a choicE For thE othEr or Simulta-nEouS choicE For both.
When making SimultanEouS choicES you are not allowed to discuss what you will choose. The choicE is based on what you already know - and on your intuition of course. Use your dEciSion tokEn (A, B, C or D) to indicate what you choose. Make your choicES secretly and reveal simultaneously.
Resolving cardsWhen you have made your choicE you will probably get choicE pointS and/or .
Each choicE on the card will show icons for the involved pErSonality Factor(S) pointing either lEFt or right. For each lEFt or right symbol on the card you place one choicE point token of your colour in the relevant box on the pErSonality track.
Just above is an example of a choicE (from the Im a bit younger than I seem... Story card, that you can see in full to the right).
You will get one choicE point token at SincErity right, one choicE point token at gEntlE-nESS right and you will lose 3 . The other player will lose 1 . Sometimes (as here) both players are impacted by one players choicE.
The cards specify exactly what happens. All rules on the cards take precedence over the main rules. Hush Hush Projects 2015

But I do agree!
Play right after you made a choice (not on Chapter Ending). You can change your decision before resolving any effects of the choice.
You must select the same option as your partner. This is now used used for all card effects.
You may draw a new Story card right after playing this.
You may discard this card at the beginning of your turn and draw a new one.

Remote cabinYoure going to a remote cabin in the woods.
Its a fantastic place, close to nature and far away from any disturbances.
The other must reveal 1 random Story Ending card on hand.
The next Story card played has double impact on all CHOICE points.
LOCATION
Most rEactionS allow you to change what is decided (either by you or by the other player) or to completely ignore some or all effects of a Story card.
You immediately draw a new Story card after play-ing a reaction. rEactionS do not count toward chaptEr lEngth.
Special card: locationSlocationS influence the impact of the next card played. Two locationS played after each other will not accumulate their effect. Only the latest played location will count.
locationS can be played right before a chaptEr ends. It will then impact the next regular card played in the next chaptEr. They will never impact a chaptEr or FinalE card.
Special card: SEcrEt playSEcrEt play cards are always played FacE down outside of chaptEr order. The card is placed next to the Secretly Played Cards indicator on the gamE board (see illustration on page 4). It still counts as a played card for the player who must end his or her turn.
As long as they are not rEvEalEd they do not count
towards the chaptEr lEngth. When rEvEalEd, they count as one card together with the rEvEal SEcrEtly playEd card.
Their effect is delayed until they are rEvEalEd or until the end of the game if they are not rEvEalEd. Any choicE pointS provided and all impacts on will be resolved when they are rEvEalEd or at gamE End.
Most SEcrEtly playEd cards provide a choicE to thE othEr if they are rEvEalEd. This is resolved as a regu-lar Story card.
Some SEcrEtly playEd cards will lose their effect if they are rEvEalEd. This is always explicitly written if this happens. In all other cases their special effects will stay in place until gamE End (or until other speci-fied conditions are fulfilled).
chaptEr and FinalE cardsWhen one of these cards is activated (because the previous chaptEr was finished) you turn it around FacE up and resolve it normally. The effects are often much stronger than regular Story cardS.
You can read about the special effects on the cards.
Scenario specific cards with special requirementsA few ScEnario specific cards provide choicES specifically for him or hEr. This may result in a player having to make the choicE, even though the card was played by the player.
A few cards can only be played by him or hEr - meaning the female or male character. Some cards have other prErEquiSitES. If these
Who are you?All played cards talk about you, your partnEr, thE othEr, thE playEr oF thE card, thE playEr, thE rEcipiEnt, thE givEr, both, etc.
Who are you? Mostly its easy to understand, but some cards will be tricky. First rule is that thE playEr oF thE card is the primary subject of the card - the you. That is unless there is a choicE to thE othEr/SimultanEouS choicE.
When reading and making a choicE you are always the subject of the text as it is written, even if the other player played the card. For SimultanEouS choicES both you and the other player can therefore be subjects of the same text, because you both need to make the same decision. The effect is resolved for both of your choicES. Sometimes you will even be impacted by both the to you and to your partnEr/to thE othEr impact from the same choicE if you both made the same choicE.
A good example of the latter are choicES on the Story card couplES thErapy (see previ-ous page). If you both select B you will both end losing 1 (-2 because you selected B and +1 because the other selected B).
Some cards - especially SEcrEtly playEd cards - will have two primary yous. thE playEr oF thE card is subject for the overall effect (the effect stated before the iF rEvEalEd condition). Then the subject changes to thE othEr playEr because there is a choicE to thE othEr.

requirements are not fulfilled you cannot yet play the card. If you are not allowed to play a card you can diScard it at any time. At the end of your turn you will draw Story cardS until you again have 5 cards.
Game end: Scoring, bal-ance and winningAt the end of the game you score additional based on your SEcrEtly playEd cardS and your trait goalS.
First reveal Story Ending cardSThis determines the final relationship status and win conditions.
Second, resolve SEcrEtly playEd cardsThe remaining SEcrEtly playEd cards are resolved as if unrEvEalEd. The text specifies impact on choicE pointS, and other effects.
Third, score from trait goalSEach trait goal specifies a pErSonality Factor and a balancE that you need to achieve. The required balancE might be individual or SharEd.
Unless otherwise specified in the ScEnario: Each achieved trait goal is +5 to you. Each missed trait goal is -3 to you.
If you have 2 trait goalS that are similar (same pErSonality Factor and same direction) the balancE requirements for the second trait goal are doubled. They are tripled for the third similar trait goal.
individual balancE resolutionFor individual balancE you add your choicE pointS that are in the supporting direction (according to
your trait goal) and subtract the opposing choicE pointS.

Story Ending cardsEach Story Ending card specifies what you need to win.
Some depend on you having a high level of . Others depend on the difference between the two players . Plus they have other special conditions.
If you have selected the SElF-rEaliSation Story Ending you need an individual balancE of 4 for all your traitS. This is irrespective of any requirements for SharEd balancE.
Winning and losingIf you succeed in realising all your Story Ending requirements, you will win. If you havent fulfilled all the conditions, you have loSt.
Both players can win or loSE the game. Or one can end up as the sole winnEr.
The game however is not competitive. Its not about one player winning over the other.
Its more about winning over the game and ending with a fulfilling love story.

Designers thoughts
My aim with the game is to create something that breaks away from how games are designed today.
Almost all games are about conflict, competition or optimisation (either between the players or between the players and the system).
My vision is to create mechanics that somehow simulate a completely different sphere of human experience, namely interpersonal relationships and building of trust.
This is of course part of other games as well, but always as a means towards winning a conflict or opti-mising something, not as a goal in itself.
The project started two years ago when I got frustrat-ed about how difficult it was to find a game my wife could enjoy playing with me. Im a geek and she is an incarnated romantic.
When we watch movies together, we can often find something that thematically suits us both. But this is almost impossible in board games. There is no sec-tion for Romance (or just Drama) in any game shop or game database.
This got me thinking and I decided to create a game we could play (and perhaps others might enjoy).
Im an experienced innovator (this is my day job), so I used all the methods I know of (user research, translation of scientific/academic insights into con-crete mechanisms, prototyping, lots of feedback and iterations, etc) to create this game.
I havent done this alone, since my wife has a big part in this as well.
She has been involved right from the beginning and
has been an amazing resource to learn from for a geek like me. On a side note we also work together in our shared innovation and design company - so we are used to doing projects together.
She has helped create a beautiful visual style for the game and has helped me fine tune almost all content.
As the game slowly materialised my ambitions evolved. Initially it was a game for my wife and me. Then Fastaval, a large Danish gaming convention, was added to the purported audience.
Later, after even more months of work and rework, the game was presented at Spiel 2015 in Essen. The reception was amazing. Several influential game designers said that this should be obligatory material for any who wants to learn about new ways of design-ing. Wow! This has of course fuelled my ambitions.
The buzz on the floor was also great. The game end-ed at #10 on the BoardGameGeek buzz ranking out of more than 1000 games presented. It was the highest ranked prototype.
Now the game is getting launched on Kickstarter. New things have to be learned and more time has to be found to support this as well as finishing devel-opment of the game. It would be a lie to say that it is easy and without personal costs. But still it feels like the most fantastic ride of my life.
Whatever happens I strongly believe that the world needs more games that cater for our inner romantic to give him or her some more power to balance out our inner warlords or bureaucrats. I hope this game can contribute towards such a change.
