Club, in downtown Milwaukee, Wisc. The former home of the Milwaukee Aerie and the Grand Aerie Headquarters, the beautiful multi-story club played host to our Grand Presidents’ Reception.

IN JULY the Fraternal Order of Eagles returned to its former stomping grounds of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for the 2015 International Convention. Members traveled from throughout the United States and Canada for a week of exciting events held inside the Wisconsin Center, Hilton City Center and Hyatt venues.

Charity once again took the forefront as Eagles worked hard throughout the week raising money, presenting special grants and enjoying a great slate of evening entertainment, all in the name of fraternalism.

2015 HIGHLIGHTSof institutions, raised $11,087 for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center through our special auction, and $15,719 from a variety of 50/50 drawings held throughout the week.

On Sunday, July 12, the F.O.E. presented a grant to Blank Children’s Hospital for $30,000, making the organization the first to top $1 million in total donations to the Des Moines, Iowa-based facility.

The F.O.E. also welcomed some esteemed new members including NASCAR team owner Harry Scott Jr., NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Driver Justin Allgaier and legendary Country Music Hall of Famers the Oak Ridge Boys.

To cap off the week’s festivities, Eagles took a trip back in time to the Rave Eagles Club in downtown Milwaukee for the annual Grand Presidents’ Reception.

The club, former home of the Milwaukee Aerie and the Grand Aerie Headquarters, showcased unbelievable Eagles history and was the perfect setting for honoring new Presidents, Grand Worthy President Chuck Lang of Harvey, North Dakota #3080, and Grand Madam President Penny Skinner of Clarksburg, West Virginia #2353.

Statutes Change Moves All Membership Dues Due Dates to May 31

The Delegates at the 2015 Grand Aerie Convention, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, approved a change to Section 71.3 of the Statutes. This change takes effect immediately and requires a change in all Aerie By-Laws.

Please follow the instructions as stated in Section 122.2 by reading this endorsement at three (3) regular Aerie meetings and attaching a copy of this endorsement to your Aerie By-Laws as a permanent amendment. When the By-Laws are amended this should be inserted at that time within the new forms.

The process to get all dues payments due May 31st should be started at this time by prorating dues payment amounts. If assistance is needed to accomplish the changes in the MMS to get all dues payments entered so all dues become due on the May 31st date; please refer to the home page of the MMS for the most up to date information. After acknowledgment of the information on the MMS if you still have questions or need further assistance, please contact the Membership Department at: [email protected] or by phone at: 614-883-2177 and they will be glad to assist you.

If your Aerie already has their dues payments due as of May 31st, please read this change as instructed above. However, there should be no changes necessary in the MMS.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation in getting all dues entered and aligned to the May 31st date.

This change states in part:

SECTION 71.3

All dues shall be paid in advance to the Local Aerie annually. They shall become due and payable on May 31st of each year.

Per Section 122.2 of the Constitution and Statutes, which states in part:

When the Grand Aerie in Grand Aerie Convention makes any change in the Laws of the Order that require change in Local Aerie By-Laws the Grand Aerie Secretary shall be empowered to send each Local Aerie an endorsement for their By-Laws, this endorsement to be read at three (3) regular meetings of the Local Aerie and then attached to the Local Aerie By-Laws as a permanent amendment.

CONFINED to a wheelchair with near-full paralysis from the waist down, Air Force Veteran Billy Woods never expected to walk again.

On Sunday, July 12, Woods walked across the stage of the Eagles’ International Convention thanks to Ekso Bionics’ Ekso GT robotic skeleton.

The suit enables parapalegic individuals like Woods to walk once again, providing much-needed therapeutic benefits assisting their overall mental and physical health.Helping wounded

Now, the F.O.E. has partnered with Ekso Bionics and SoldierSocks, a veterans organization which collects funds to purchase the suits, to help our wounded veterans.

Eagles’ members can donate to the Lew Reed Spinal Cord Injury Fund with donations earmarked for the Ekso project to help purchase a suit. Each suit costs $150,000 and includes full training and maintenance. Suits can be purchased for donation to approved rehabilitation facilities to be shared by patients.


“While nutrition experts often recom-mend limiting intake of salt and fat in your diet, many foods actually contain high amounts of both (think salty

French fries or bacon). However, very little is known about how these two nutrients interact.

With this question in mind, two junior researchers in the University of Iowa Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center Justin Grobe, PhD, an expert in the neural control of cardio-vascular function and metabolism, and Michael Lutter MD, PhD, a psychia-trist study the appetite and food reward, began a collaboration to understand the synergistic eff ects of salt on high fat diet consumption. Their initial hypothesis was that salt would increase the palat-ability of high fat food promoting the over consumption of both salt and fat leading to obesity and hypertension. Much to their surprise, salt not only had no eff ect on how much high fat food the mice consumed, but higher concen-

trations of salt actually protected the mice from developing obesity at all.

Since the investigators knew that all of the animals consumed the same number of calories, they fi rst looked at metabolic rate to see if salt consump-tion increased energy expenditure. However, the metabolic rate of the mice was the same in all groups. That observation indicated that there was only one other possible destination for the extra calories- excretion from the bowels before their absorption in the intestines. Sure enough, when the researchers analyzed the feces of the mice fed the highest concentrations of salt, they found the missing calories in the form of unabsorbed fat in the stool.

Before you run out and add extra salt to all of your food, the researchers urge some caution. The study was performed in mice and its not known if the same process occurs in humans. Also high salt by itself has been associated with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. But the research does support the idea that blocking fat absorption in the intestines could, if tolerated, be a viable method of treating obesity.”

Mason Inducted Into Grand Aerie Hall of Fame

O n June 24, current Grand Worthy President-Elect Jerry Sullivan presented University

of Iowa President Sally Mason with a special plaque commemorating Mason’s induction in the Humanitarian wing of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Grand Aerie Hall of Fame.

The presentation took place during a special farewell reception held inside the University’s Levitt Center for University Advancement. Mason announced in early 2015 that she would retire from her position on August 1.

The 65-year-old served as President of the university for nine years, where she helped lead the charge to develop the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center – a 20,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art research facility created thanks to a $25 million gift from the F.O.E. She is a member of Iowa City Auxiliary #695, where she joined in July 2013.

The Fraternal Order of Eagles wishes Sally Mason the best of luck in her retirement and share our thanks for her work in the development of the DRC. Vice President of Medical Affairs Jean Robillard is now serving as the university’s Interim President.

DRC LIVE AND SILENT AUCTION Since 2011, the F.O.E. has held a special charity auction benefiting the DRC during our annual International Convention. This year’s event raised $9,700 for the DRC, bringing our five year live auction total to $70,325.

On July 21, 2015, 20th UI President Sally Mason was inducted in to the Grand Aerie Hall of Fame in honor of her devotion and service to the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Over the last few months at The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center at the University of Iowa—thanks to your generous gift—diabetes research has really taken fl ight!

Each new discovery could result in the next big breakthrough. Across campus, more than 100 researchers take innovative steps in their research every day. Our labs house 15 of those teams, creating a cross-discipline center that is rising quickly.

Exciting news: Several faculty members have won over $7 million in diabetes research grants! Plus, our pilot grant recipients continue to kick start several fascinating concepts. Weekly meetings allow researchers to share what they know, learn from national speakers, form new collaborations, and foster a community focused on curing diabetes.

Our recruiting efforts have brought us top scientists from Harvard, Vanderbilt and other leading universities. These new investigators, as well as our own, are exploring a wide variety of topics. From converting skin cells into insulin-producing pancreatic cells to pinpointing the appetite control center in the brain, new treatments and cures could be around the corner. Millions of children and adults who have diabetes could benefi t!

In order to make the leap from discovery to real breakthroughs, we need to move toward validating our research with human studies. This requires tremendous resources. A fi nite amount of federal funding is available; only 10% of applicants receive funding. For this reason, private support like yours is even more imporatant to our cause.

My lab is strategically set up to perform high-impact research to examine metabolic disease. We study the role of hormones that regulate metabolism. The purpose for studying these hormones is two-fold: 1) secreted factors are a rich source of new therapeutics because they are designed to circulate and signal, and 2) nutrient signaling is dysregulated in several diseases, including diabetes and cancer. We recently discovered a novel hormonal pathway that controls a person’s “sweet tooth” or preference for sweets. Administration of this hormone completely suppresses the preference for sweets, but not fats or lipids. Our results raise the interesting possibility that this pathway could be targeted therapeutically to modify dietary choices in humans.

My laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of skeletal muscle atrophy and then uses that information to discover small molecules that can be used to prevent and treat muscle atrophy. For example, we have found compounds such as tomatidine from tomatoes and ursolic acid from apples could be combined into science-based nutrition products to fi ght muscle wasting and weakness.

PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR HIGHLIGHT: James Ankrum, PhDEstablished in the Fall of 2014, my lab is taking a bioengineering approach to solve major challenges in the treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications. The lab develops cell-based therapeutics, in which living cells from donors are utilized to treat complications like diabetic wounds. Work to date has resulted in recognition by the NIH Single Cell Analysis Program and a grant from the National Blood Foundation.

Held 80 years to the day of F.D.R.’s signing of the groundbreaking legislation, the event saw the F.O.E. pose for photos at the memorial and honor the work done by generations of Eagles before us to ensure the protection of senior citizens in America.

The F.O.E.’s work regarding Social Security began on the State level in New York, as Eagles there worked with then-Governor Roosevelt to help the state pass its first Old Age Pension law. As the issue began to gain prominence on a National level upon Roosevelt’s ascension to the Presidency, the Eagles expanded its push alongside the President to make financial protection for seniors a reality.

The 80th Anniversary celebration is the second in a trio of historic years for the F.O.E., preceded by last year’s 100th Anniversary of Mother’s Day and serving as the prelude to next year’s 50th Anniversary of Medicare, which provides medical coverage for senior citizens as well as the disabled.

Currently, nearly 60 million Americans each month receive necessary financial assistance thanks to the Social Security Act and the tireless work of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Grand Worthy President Chuck LangCharity – Th e Art Ehrmann Cancer Fund

Th roughout the year, Grand Worthy President Chuck Lang will be raising money throughout the jurisdiction to benefi t the Fraternal Order of Eagles Charity Foundation’s Art Ehrmann Cancer Fund, which provides grants to hospitals and institutions dedicated to the fi ght against cancer and in support of patient care.

Special Project - Home on the Range

Chuck’s special project for the year is Home on the Range, in Sentinel Butte, North Dakota. Home On Th e Range is a therapeutic, working ranch providing education, therapy, spiritual guidance, and recreational and work activities to 54 boys and girls, ages 12 – 19. Most of the youth at Home On Th e Range have used dysfunctional coping skills to manage problems in the past. In many cases, these coping skills have been survival skills.

E ach year, the F.O.E. Ladies’ Auxiliary presents the Alta Browning Smith

Award and the Grand Auxiliary Hall of Fame Awards during the International Auxiliary Convention. Nominations for both prestigious honors are being accepted by the Grand Madam President’s Office until December 1.

The Alta Browning Smith Award is presented each year to a Sister who best exemplifies dedication and service to both the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and her local community. Nomination forms for the award should be submitted after a Sister has been approved on the floor by the State/Provincial Auxiliary Membership.

Hall of Fame induction is awarded to Auxiliary members with a consistent record of service and support for the Ladies’ Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of Eagles as a whole. Recipients will receive a special plaque with their name recognizing their achievement, as well as inclusion on the Grand Auxiliary Hall of Fame plaque hanging inside the Grand Aerie Headquarters.

Operating an organization the size of the Fraternal Order of Eagles requires a substantial amount of resources. Those resources are primarily provided through the biannual Per-Capita Tax paid by each Aerie and Auxiliary to the Grand Aerie.

The Per-Capita Tax made up 73.41% of all Grand Aerie income for the 2014-2015 fraternal year. These funds enable us to provide you with dedicated off ice support, fund our annual International Convention, support all agent and assignment-related travel and expenses and support all of our internal and external marketing and membership eff orts.

Below each graph will be a breakdown of the various items which make up each category. For example, Travel & Meeting Costs made up 14% of the Grand Aerie’s expenses last year. Of that amount, 31% was spent on Convention-related travel while just 12.5% was used for all Board Meeting-related travel throughout the year.

• The Grand Aerie continues to operate within the budget approved by the delegation. Per-Capita Tax will remain at $6 in Dec. 2015.

• While we opened the DRC and fulfilled our $25 million commitment to the University of Iowa in 2014, our goal is not yet finished. In a previous year, to meet our commitment, we borrowed $2.1 million for the Charity Foundation. We must continue to fundraise and pay off the $1.4 million balance of this loan to complete our goal.

• Loss of membership is the major challenge facing our organization. From a financial perspective, leadership must construct a plan to fund necessary investment in marketing, programs and training to rejuvenate membership while membership-driven income declines.

low interest rates were negatively affecting funding the Pension Fund. Local Aeries were responsible for 77% of the underfunded Pension Fund when the Grand Aerie assumed liability. In real dollars, that’s $9,240,000 the Grand Aerie agreed to pay. The Grand Aerie borrowed money to fully fund the Pension Fund, allowing it to be terminated and beneficiaries to be fully paid. This will allow the Grand Aerie to budget necessary cash flow to meet payments instead of trying to meet a contribution amount that fluctuates annually with interest rates. Dealing with this now will help the Eagles thrive in the long run. The beneficiaries are expected to be paid in full and the Pension Fund terminated by the end of December 2015.

F.O.E. Strategic PlanGRAND AERIE

During the 2015 International Convention, the F.O.E. unveiled its new Strategic Plan, featuring our goals for the next five years, outlining a path to success as the organization progresses toward the future. The goals were presented to the Aerie and Auxiliary delegations and all members were urged to promote the plan to their fellow Brothers & Sisters to help in the process of reaching success.

The goals are as follows:

• Grow the F.O.E. combined Aerie and Auxiliary membership to 1.1 million or more total members

• Promote public awareness and creative positive impressions of the F.O.E. nationwide.

• Preserve the F.O.E. as a strong, vibrant fraternity well positioned for success in the future.

• Assure the financial stability of all F.O.E. funds and investments.

Apply To Be A Grand Aerie AgentThe Grand Aerie is taking a new, proactive approach to our Agent program and we need your help in maximizing its potential.

Through the revised Agent program, the Grand Aerie looks to find approximately 30 individuals to work as Agents dedicated to helping Troubled Aeries/Auxiliaries get back on their feet and continue leaving a positive impact on their communities.

Another 10 individuals will be selected as Closing Agents, who will inherit Aeries and Auxiliaries deemed unsalvageable and assist in the sale and handling of assets. Revisions were made to the program in an effort to relieve pressure from the States/Provinces and improve the knowledge of all Agents of the Grand Aerie.

We’re asking you to spread the word to Aeries and Auxiliaries throughout your State/Province and help us attract individuals in your area who you feel best exemplify the Fraternal Order of Eagles and are best suited for Agent work.

Anyone accepted into the Agent program will be required to attend an Agent Certification Class where the duties and obligations of the positions will be explained by Grand Aerie leadership.

All Membership Dues Due Dates to May 31The Delegates at the 2015 Grand Aerie Convention, held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, approved a change to Section 71.3 of the Statutes. This change takes effect immediately and requires a change in all Aerie By-Laws. This change states in part:

All dues shall be paid in advance to the Local Aerie annually. They shall become due and payable on May 31st of each year.

The Grand Tribunal Office has moved to the Grand Aerie Headquarters in Grove City, Ohio. Please be sure to send any materials to the Grand Aerie Headquarters from this point forward.

JOLIE STAUFFER, formerly Grand Aerie Paralegal/Assistant to the Legal Advisor, has been named the Secretary to the Grand Tribunal, following the retirement of previous Secretary Shirley Schoenauer, and will be handling phone calls, e-mails and inquiries related to the Grand Tribunal and its associated functions.

Important Dues Receipt Notice!SECTION 55.1

The offi cial receipt of the Order properly executed by the member’s home Aerie shall be the only acceptable evidence of good standing of a member.

SECTION 55.2

The offi cial receipt shall be of such size and form as may be prescribed by the Grand Secretary, and shall be issued in the manner directed by the Grand Secretary.

Dues receipts in violation of the directions of the Grand Secretary are NOT permitted to be issued by an Aerie and any member using a receipt in violation may not be accepted for admittance by the remaining Aeries of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
