A Message from your President

Winter seems to have finally given up and summer is just around the

corner, members are polishing the golf clubs and bikers are getting the bikes out of

Well it is that time of year again where we are seeking members who are willing to serve on the

executive for 2015/2016 of our Aerie or Provincial Aerie. April is the month we seek nominations and

first meeting in May will be elections. Anyone interested contact Jeff Mullenix or any member of our

present executive.

Winter sports are coming to a close by the end of April; to all those that participated enjoy the summer

see you in the fall. We also hosted Provincial curling 27 February with teams from Calgary, Regina

Calgary. We did bring back one trophy you will have to talk to

Peggy Kennedy for the details.

Success comes from…hanging on when everyone else has let go.

THE “WIN” THAT

GOT AWAY!!! Once again this year, St. Albert was represented by two teams at the annual Pacific Northwest Bonspiel in Calgary, hosted by Aerie 2098

on the weekend of March 13 – 15, 2015.

There were 22 teams in total with 2 from Vernon, 2 from Penticton, 1 from

Lethbridge,15 from Calgary and of course our 2.

Mike Bedel was skip on one team with Doug and Peggy Kennedy and Patti Cherwaty

helping him out. The other St. Albert team was skipped by Brian Riehl, with Ken Jones, Mary McKenzie and Ann MacDonald pretending they were helping. Funnily

enough, both teams were victorious in the first game.

After that game there was good entertainment back at the Aerie and they had great shuttle drivers to take us from our hotel to the rink to the club and much later, back to the hotel.

Saturday’s game came way too early at 8:00 am and both teams played two games, with Team Riehl making it to the Semi-Final of the “B” Event. Team Bedel’s game was going very well up to the Fifth End when they were up 7 to 2. Unfortunately their opposition was a very determined bunch and managed to come back and tie it up

at the end of the regulation 8 ends. What a nail biter!!!! The skips then each had to throw a rock to see who won the game and this is where it “got away” as their skip

outdrew our skip and Bedel Team was eliminated.

Saturday’s Banquet was a very enjoyable affair. The Social Committee from Aerie2098 had done an absolutely amazing job with the theme “Beach Party” and had the place full of palm trees, lots of little lights, beach balls, flamingos, etc., etc. Each chair was decorated with a towel with all the sponsors on it and tied with a home-made starfish made out of dough.

Patti one a new pair of large jugs which Peggy decided to fill with beer and challenge a young lad from Calgary to a beer chugging contest. She didn’t win that contest but was awarded next day with a trophy for her gallant efforts.

(So at least we won something).

Team Riehl had to be on the ice again at 8:00 Sunday morning but sorry to say, could not do anything against a team from Penticton. I honestly think the problem was going to bed too early on Saturday night so we have to remember

to party harder next time.

These events are really good fun and next year it will be held in Penticton. I would encourage anyone who enjoys curling (or just a good time) to come to that one – let’s get more than two teams going from St. Albert – maybe

we can win an event!!!!!
