have more than 15 kids, it will probably take too long to do an all-play, and if you have mostly young kids, you may also want to consider the two-player version. However, if you have fewer than 15 kids of various ages, we recommend the all-play.

• With the wet ingredients, be sure to double or triple-bag the items (or place them in a open plastic bag inside of the paper bag). It could be fun to raise the stakes of the game each time, getting slimier and grosser, but then have the very last item be something not gross.

Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, take a few moments to pray for them. Pray for the kids who might be struggling through tough circumstances at home. Ask God to give them comfort and hope through the knowledge that He is always with them and He is ready to help them face whatever lies in front of them. Pray for wisdom about how to help those kids navigate their circumstances. For those who aren’t currently struggling, ask God to plant seeds of encouragement in their hearts that they can refer back to when they do go through hard times.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAW H AT Y O U N E E D : Offering container, paper plates, crayons

W H AT Y O U D O : • Greet kids as they arrive to small group and show them where to put their

offering.• Pass out the paper plates and put the crayons somewhere that everyone can

reach them.• Instruct kids to draw the face they make when they’re afraid on one side of

the plate.• On the other side of the plate, instruct kids to draw the face they make when

they’re “facing their fears” and have faith.• Tell them to flip the paper plate from “fear face” to “faith face” and back as

fast as they can.• Then play a game where you call out, “Fear face,” or “Faith face,” at

random times and in a random order. See if kids can keep up by showing the correct side of the plate each time.

• Gather the group along the masking tape line in your small group area. • Tell them that they will be guessing the definitions of complicated phobias.• For each fear that you read, kids should jump to one side of the tape line

for the first option and to the other side for the second option.• Read each phobia clearly and slowly so that kids can choose their side.• After all of the phobias have been read, gather the group together along

the line.

W H AT Y O U S AY:“I had no idea there were so many things to be afraid of! Some of those were pretty unique, but a couple of them are pretty common. Has anyone ever experienced one of those fears? “Sometimes faith takes a little FOCUS. We have to take a closer look at what we CAN see so we can know how to trust what we CAN’T see.

“Speaking of what we CAN’T see, I’ve got a great game for you, today. We’ll find out who’s brave enough to TOUCH what they can’t see!

Set out the supplies for the game. You can either use paper bags for an all-play (recommended), or you can use blindfolds and just have two older kids play.

For all-play: establish the rules. No looking inside the bag. Only touching. Everyone gets three seconds to touch, and then passes the bag down. Don’t say out loud what you think it is; write it down on your card. At the end of the game, allow kids to share what they thought each item was. They get one point for each correct item.

For a two-player game: Choose two (willing) older kids. Have them come to the table and put on the googly eye masks. Then pull out the items (on paper plates) for them to touch, one by one. On the count of three, each of them should say out loud what they think it is. The kid who gets the most correct answers out of the five items is the winner.

At the end of the game, hand out wet wipes and paper towels. Let everyone clean up while you move the table and supplies out of the way.

“That was hilarious . . . a little bit gross . . . and maybe even a little scary! Who got a little more nervous (or nervous for our players) with each item? But you all pushed on and faced your fears. Well done!

“Let’s celebrate our God and worship Him together. He’s always with us—even when we feel nervous or afraid. Everyone on your feet!”

WORSHIPL E A D E R : “Listen to these words from Psalm 46:1. ‘God is our place of safety. He gives us strength. He is always there to help us in times of trouble.’ (NIrV) I’m so glad to know that God is always with us. Let’s thank Him for giving us courage!”

“You Give Me Courage” track 7 from Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

“We don’t have to worry about the things that life throws at us, because we’re never alone. Even in our darkest times, God will carry us through. [Basic Truth] We can trust Him no matter what. Let’s keep worshipping Him together!”

“I Can Always Trust You” track 1 from Can’t Stop Won’t Stop

STORYSETTING UP THE STORYL E A D E R : “Last week we talked about a man named Saul, who was also known as Paul.

“Saul was a religious leader, but he was NOT a fan of Jesus and His followers. He didn’t believe that Jesus was the Son of God. After Jesus died, rose again, and went back to heaven, Saul made it his mission to hunt down the people who followed Jesus.

“One day, Saul and a few men headed to the city of Damascus. He had permission from the high priest to arrest anyone there who followed Jesus and take them to Jerusalem. But on the way, Jesus Himself appeared to Saul in a blinding light from heaven—and Saul could no longer see!

“Jesus told Saul to continue his journey into Damascus, and there he would be told what to do next. The men traveling with Saul led him into town, where he stayed at the home of a man named, Judas on Straight Street.

“Before we continue with this story, I think it’s time we play a little game I like to call . . . What. . . Happened . . . Next?

CG: “What Happened Next?” Slide

“Every one of you will get four paper wads. From time to time, I’ll pause the story and ask you what you think happened next. I’ll give you three options, and you’ll throw your paper into the trash can labeled with what you think is the correct answer.

Give four paper wads to each kid.

ANANIAS GOES TO SAULL E A D E R : “Meanwhile, there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. God called out to Ananias in a vision. Listen to what God said to him.

Open the Bible to Acts 9:11-12 (NIrV) and read.

“Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street. Ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying. In a vision Saul has seen a man come and place his hands on him. That man’s name is Ananias. In the vision, Ananias placed his hands on Saul so he could see again.”

“In short, God was telling Ananias to go to Saul, put his hands on him, and heal him.

“Let’s back up for a second. This is SAUL we’re talking about. Ananias had heard all about Saul—about how he arrested people who followed Jesus! Ananias had probably even heard that Saul had stood by and held the coats of the people who killed Stephen with stones . . . just because Stephen believed in Jesus.

“Ananias knew all about Saul, so he must have been afraid. Listen to how he responded when he heard what God wanted him to do.

Open the Bible to Acts 9:13-14 (NIrV) and read.

“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I’ve heard many reports about this man. They say he has done great harm to your holy people in Jerusalem. Now he has come here to arrest all those who worship you. The chief priests have given him authority to do this.”

“Ananias wasn’t so sure about this idea. But God went on to explain what His plans for Saul were:

Open the Bible to Acts 9:15 (NIrV) and read.

“The Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! I have chosen this man to work for me. He will announce my name to the Gentiles and to their kings. He will also announce my name to the people of Israel.’”

“Did Ananias:

a) tell God His vision was wrong,b) go to the house of Judas on Straight Street, orc) go to the house of Judas on Crooked Street?

“Throw one wad of paper into the trash can that you think is the right answer—a, b, or c.

“Ananias obeyed God and went to find Saul at Judas’ house on Straight Street. Even though God had told Ananias how He planned to use Saul to share His love with others, Ananias must have been afraid. But . . . he did what God said. He went to the house and found Saul.

“Saul hadn’t been eating or drinking anything for three days, and he still couldn’t see. Ananias placed his hands on Saul and told him why he had come.

Open the Bible to Acts 9:17 (NIrV) and read.

“Brother Saul,” he said, “you saw the Lord Jesus. He appeared to you on the road as you were coming here. He has sent me so that you will be able to see again. You will be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

“As soon as Ananias placed his hands on Saul, something like scales dropped from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again! He got up and was baptized.”

CHANGE OF HEARTL E A D E R : “Before Saul met Jesus on the road to Damascus, he had done everything he could to wipe out Jesus’ followers.

“But now that he had met Jesus, Saul was equally determined to share the good news. Within days of meeting Jesus, and being blinded then healed, he began preaching in the Jewish synagogues. He taught that Jesus is the Son of God.

“Everyone who heard Saul speak was amazed. Listen to the questions they asked each other as they tried to understand the changes they saw in him.

Open the Bible to Acts 9:21 (NIrV) and read.

“Isn’t he the man who caused great trouble in Jerusalem? Didn’t he make trouble for those who worship Jesus? Hasn’t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?”

“Day by day, Saul continued to share the message of Jesus with more and more people. Many of them began to believe, but there were also many—including the governor of Damascus—who were upset by Saul’s mission. They made plans to capture and kill Saul.

“But Saul’s friends made a plan to help him escape. I think you know what’s coming now.

BARNABAS DEFENDS SAULL E A D E R : “After Saul escaped from Damascus, he ended up in Jerusalem. He tried to join the believers there . . . but they were afraid of him. They knew he had tried to stop the Jesus-followers before.

“But one man, Barnabas, had already heard Saul’s story. Barnabas took Saul to visit Peter, James, and the other leaders of the early church; and he told them the whole story. He explained how Jesus had appeared to Saul on the road, and how afterward, Saul had begun telling people about Jesus in Damascus.

“Ananias was brave enough to obey God and visit Saul—even though he had heard all about what Saul had done before.

“Barnabas was brave enough to speak up for Saul and help the leaders in Jerusalem trust him.

“Saul was brave enough to speak up about Jesus—even though he knew not everyone would be happy about it.

“All of these believers knew Jesus. That’s why they had such incredible courage!

CG: Bottom Line Slide

“Knowing Jesus can help you face your fears.

“When you’re afraid, remember that God is with you. Even though you can’t see Him, you can trust Him. He can give you the strength to do something you’re scared to do.

“Maybe you’re afraid to tell the truth because you’re worried you’ll get in trouble. Or you might be afraid to be kind to someone who hasn’t been nice to you in the past. It’s normal to be worried about something like that—and you should definitely be careful if you don’t trust someone. But at the same time, knowing Jesus can help you face your fears and give someone a chance.

“And here’s another cool thing. Not only do we have our relationship with Jesus to help us face our fears, but when you put your trust in Jesus, you also have the Helper that Jesus promised—the Holy Spirit.

“We’ll talk more in Small Group about what it looks like to face your fears. You can head that way now!”

guidelines and working as a group

1. FOUR-LEGGED RACES W H AT Y O U N E E D : Bandanas, a cone or chair

W H AT Y O U D O :• Set the cone or chair on one side of your small group area and line the kids

up at the other side.• Organize kids in groups of three kids of similar height and size.• With the bandanas, tie the legs of the middle kid in each trio to the legs of

his companions on the sides. Like the classic three-legged race, only with another person.

• Have the groups put their arms around each other’s shoulders and practice walking around.

• Then line them all up across from the chair and have a four-legged race.• The first group to reach the chair and get back to the starting line wins.• Encourage them to work together and move carefully.• Play a few rounds and let groups see how many times they can win.

W H AT Y O U S AY:“This race reminds me of our Bible story. It’s like Saul in the middle with Ananias and Barnabas on either side. Why did Saul need Ananias’s help? (He needed Ananias to pray for him, and to believe that Saul knew Jesus and wasn’t dangerous to Jesus’ followers.) How did Barnabas help Saul? (He introduced him to the other church people and believed in Saul’s change of heart.)

“Both of these people helped Saul when he needed it, but what could have stopped them? (Many things, but mostly their fear. If Saul was still hunting Christians, he could have hurt them, or arrested them, etc.) These men had a big job to do in welcoming Saul, but their fear could have stopped the message of Jesus from being spread to others.

“Have you ever been afraid to do something you knew God wanted you to do? (like helping an unpopular kid at school, or talking to people at church, or obeying your parents and going down to the basement to get something even though it’s so creepy) Barnabas and Ananias showed us that knowing Jesus can help you face your fears.”

Optional Discussion Questions for Older KidsIf you lead 4th, 5th, or 6th graders, consider asking these discussion questions:• Barnabas and Ananias risked a lot by helping Saul. Have you ever risked what everyone thought of you, in order

to help someone out? Maybe if your friends saw who you were helping, they’d think you weren’t cool anymore. Or have you refused to talk bad about someone when everyone else was doing it? ú What was that like? Did you feel nervous or scared?

• Many of our fears as we get older are about what people think of us. How does knowing Jesus and knowing what God thinks of you help you face those fears?

2. FEAR TAKES FLIGHTW H AT Y O U N E E D : Small, shallow bowls of water, a hotel-sized bar of soap, black pepper; optional: pencils, paper clips, forks.

W H AT Y O U D O :• Give each pair of kids a bowl of water, some pepper, and a bar of soap.• Tell them to pour the pepper over the water in the middle of the bowl. The

pepper will all stay in one place on the surface of the water.• Then, tell them to gently dip one end of the soap into the water in the

middle of the pepper and watch what happens.• The pepper will move away from the soap!• They can gently move the soap near the pepper and watch how it moves away.• If time and supplies allow, empty the bowls and wipe them out.• Let kids conduct the experiment again, but before they put the soap in, let

them try different things to diffuse the pepper like sticking a pencil, fork, or paperclip into the water.

• Tell them not to stir the water in any way, but just to gently dip each item into the water.

• Clean up the experiment before continuing.

W H AT Y O U S AY:“This is a cool science experiment. I think it says something important about faith. A lot of times when we’re afraid, it feels like the fear is everywhere - like the pepper! But when we have faith and trust in God’s plan, the faith drives away the fear like the soap moves the pepper.

“I don’t know exactly what you’re afraid of, but [Make It Personal] (share either a fear from when you were younger or a mild fear you have as an adult. Let kids know that it’s okay to be afraid, but that faith helps you see that the fear isn’t overwhelming. If you’ve had an experience where you were able to choose faith over fear, share about it with the group.)

“So, the next time you wash your hands, take a bath, or need to add some spice to your mac and cheese, look at the soap and pepper and remember that knowing Jesus can help you face your fears. Faith reminds us that there is no fear bigger than Jesus.”

W H AT Y O U D O :• Pass out the rocks and the markers.• Open the Bible to Hebrews 11:1 and read it out loud as a group.• Instruct the kids to write the verse reference, Hebrews 11:1, on one side

of their rock and to write FAITH on another part.• Then, they can decorate it however they want.• Take the rocks with you to the tape line that was used in the Social

activity.• Ask the group either/or questions about being afraid, such as:

ú If you’re more afraid of a math test at school, put your rock on the right side of the line. If you’re more afraid of falling off your bike, put your rock on the left.

ú Other ideas: afraid of being called names vs. being left alone at home; having to eat something weird vs. having to talk to a store clerk or restaurant server; afraid of disappointing your parents vs. having a teacher upset with you.

W H AT Y O U S AY:“We’re all afraid of something, and that’s okay. It’s normal to be afraid sometimes. But we made these rocks to remind us that knowing Jesus can help you face your fears. Where can you put this rock at home to remind you to have faith even when you’re afraid? (by the bed for fear of the dark, near your homework area for fear of failure, outside the garage for fear of riding a bike or accidents, or on your kitchen table where you’ll see it at breakfast)

“We can have faith that God is bigger than any fear! He proved it when He sent Jesus to beat sickness and accidents and even DEATH! Faith reminds us that God will be with us no matter what, even when we are afraid.”
