Eli Zarzecki

I joined karate a couple weeks before my 9TH birthday under the teaching of Kyoshi Dargan. We celebrated my birthday with a karate party where I was amazed when I broke my first wooden board.

Since then I’ve participated in the Spring 2007 tournament, the Fall 2007 tournament, a Katana seminar, an extreme form seminar, an ex-treme double chucks seminar, a few boot camps and a board breaking seminar. I have preformed in Block Parties, Fall Parades, 4th of July Parades, my school talent show, and at a Band Cavalcade.

Karate has helped me to become more physically fit and confi-dent to face life’s challenges. I have loved karate from the start and dream of starting my own school some day. I would like to thank, my mom and dad, Kyoshi, my friends, the instructors, and everyone for supporting me, and helping me get through this. I will practice for the rest of my life and hope to achieve many advanced degrees.

Dave Flynn I began training during the summer of 2002 while I was in high school. I had always wanted to take karate, and I signed up after my friend and now fellow black belt John Stevenson took me to a class for buddy week. I still remember classes over at Pitman with Mr. Theurer and Mr. Ware, and staying after class to bother them with self defense

questions. When Kyoshi Dargan opened school in West Deptford, I be-gan training with him. In 2004 I earned my black belt and graduated from high school, then went on to college where I studied Brazilian ju-jitsu. I returned to train at the dojo whenever I was home on break, and now that I have graduated from college I have returned to training full time with Kyoshi. Over the years I have had many instructors to whom I am for-ever indebted, amongst them Mr. Theurer, Mr. Ware, Mr. Jordan and of course Kyoshi Dargan. I would also like to thank my dear friends, John Stevenson and Kathleen Gaunt, for training and learning with me, and for keeping it fun. To my fellow West Deptford candidates, it has been honor testing with you and I couldn't be more proud of you guys!

Mark Petracci Hi my name is Mark Petracci. I'm 10 years old and in 4th grade. This December's extravaganza I'll be earning my 2nd degree black belt. I started karate at OKKA at age 4 and a half in the little dragons class. Last year at age 9 I earned my 1st degree black belt. I like to

learn all the black belt katas, extreme weapons, and new jumps, kicks and punches. I also really enjoy MMA classes. They are fun and they give me extra skills and help to improve my strength. My goal for next year is to continue practicing Karate and going to MMA classes. I will also be signing up to play for TWP football next fall. I will continue to be an honor roll student, and have lots of fun playing with my family and friends. I would like to thank my parents and family for supporting me with karate which I love to do. I'd like to thank instructors; Mr. Brian Theurer, Mr. Sickles, Ms. Cosgrove, Mr. Young, and of course Shihan De-Gori and Kyoshi Dargan for providing an excellent karate school and teaching me lessons of discipline, leadership, and respect! Thanks a lot!

Kate Gallagher

I began my karate training as a Little Dragon at the Pitman Dojo in March 2003 at the age of four. I moved to the Swedesboro school when it opened in February 2004 and earned my 3rd degree Little Dragon black belt there. Later that year, I moved up to juniors and earned my 1st degree Black Belt in June 2007. Some of the things I especially enjoy at OKKA are Gladiator Nights and the tournaments. During the last tour-nament in March 2008, I took 2nd place in kata and 1st place in weap-ons. I look forward to participating in the next tournament. I have had many great instructors who have taught, encouraged, and supported me. My biggest influences have been Mr. Ferguson, Mr. Theurer, Sensei Jordan, and Shihan DeGori. I am grateful for the knowledge and skills that they have passed on to me. These have helped me be a better, stronger person outside of karate as well, during school and sports. I am also grateful for the support of my family, who have given much of their time over the years to bring me to classes and events. I would especially like to thank my mom and dad for allowing me to take karate and always being there for me, my grandparents for supporting me by taking me to many events and attending belt gradua-tions and tournaments, and especially my grandfather who still takes me to karate every Monday. I would also like to thank my brother Jack for sitting through years of karate classes and the rest of my family and friends who supported me when I earned my Black Belt. Without all of you, I could not have achieved so much. I will be forever grateful. My short term goals include continuing to work hard and train to further myself and uphold the oath of Black Belt Excellence. My long term goals include continuing my advancement and sharing my knowledge by teaching others the skills of martial arts.

Michael McEnery My journey to becoming a black belt began in March of 2004, one month after my third birthday, when my parents enrolled me in the Little Dragons program. At first, I would cry as (then) Sensei De-Gori led me onto the mat and sent my parents out of the dojo. This only lasted for a few moments until I quickly became involved in the activities of the class. Over the next few years, I rose through the ranks achieving my 3rd degree Dragon Black Belt. In

September 2006, I advanced into the beginners level classes. All along, I looked up to the many great instructors I had and set my goals to one day earn and be promoted to a black belt. My years in Karate have helped me to grow strong and confi-dent in everything I do. The three major principles, “Focus, Discipline and Respect” are three rules that my parents consistently hold me ac-countable to each and every day and with every choice I make. My journey and promotion to a black belt would not have been possible without all of the help and motivation from my Mom and Dad who have always encouraged me to give 100%, my sisters or Poppy who made sure I made it to class if Mom or Dad were working, and most importantly the instruction and guidance of Shihan DeGori, Mr. Young, Mr. Brian, Mr. Walker, Mr. Goodman, Miss Cosgrove, Mr. Sickles and Mr. Glass. In the future, I look forward to advancing to higher level black belt ranks and hope to one day become an instructor of the OKKA martial arts in the very same Dojo where I started.

Jamal Keith My name is Jamal Keith, I go to Green fields elementary school. I am nine years old and in the 4th grade. I began my training at Okinawa Kenpo Karate Academy in December 2005. Ka-rate has helped me to grow physically and men-tally. My goal is to be focused and respect others so I can be ready for the real world. My other goal is to teach others to be focused and respect others too so that they can be ready for the real world too. I have learned many things from my teacher Kyoshi Dargan, and my parents. I really enjoyed the tournament in 2007 when I took 1st place in weapons, kata, board breaking and sparing. I learned if I prac-tice and try my best I would be a winner.

Bailey Flack

My name is Bailey Flack. I started karate on October 10, 2006. I am getting my first degree black belt. I was interested in karate because I wanted to learn katas and weapons. I’ve always wanted to learn how to use nunchucks. I started helping out in January 2008 assisting to teach the little dragons and junior basic students. I am interested in karate so I can be focused and listen better to my parents and teachers in school.

Some of my favorite moments in karate are getting my new belts and going to tournaments. In the fall tournament in 2007, I won 3 first place trophies. One of my favorite activities is going to Gladiator Nights.

I would like to thank Kyoshi Dargan, Sempi Devine, Mr. Rivera, and my parents who have helped me to do better in karate and achieve my black belt. My goals are to reach a 6th degree black belt and to become a karate teacher when I grow up.

Emma Zulker Hi, my name is Emma Zulker, and I'm a second degree black belt candidate. I started karate in September 2005 and have been working my hardest ever since. Once I got my first degree black belt last December, I thought I had reached the peak of my training. I thought, “This is it! I’m a black belt!” Once I started attending black belt classes, however, I realized I had just commenced the next phase of my

training. I have so much more to learn and so much farther to travel; my black belt journey has only just begun.

My favorite memory is of when I received my black belt. I had trained hard for over two years, and all my hard work, tears, and sweat (especially sweat!) had finally paid off. I was a black belt! I had never been prouder of myself. My future karate goal is to become a third de-gree black belt. I don’t know if I can continue training after I graduate high school, but I really hope I can.

Some people that really helped me on my black belt journey are my mom, who was always full of assistance, encouragement, and pa-tience, my neighbor, Mr. Jack, who never failed to pick me up and take me to every karate class, and my friends, who always supported me. My instructors who deserve special thanks for helping me are Mr. Walker, Mr. Glass, Mr. Hoskins, Mr. Theurer (Mr. T), Mr. Young, and of course, Shihan DeGori. I also want to thank all the black belts who are my seniors for your patience, helping me with katas, giving me advice, sharing notes, or just being there for encouragement. Also, thanks to my fellow candidates for your support and the life-long bond we will now always share. Thanks to all who have been there for me, even if I didn't men-tion you. My friends and family are my light in the darkness, my blan-ket on a cold night, and my stimulant when I am down. Thank you all!

Amanda Cosgrove Wow! I can’t believe this day is actually here. Throughout my 11 years training under Shihan DeGori and Kyoshi Dargan, I’ve learned so many life lessons. When I first walked through the doors in 1998 as a shy, quiet girl, I was terrified and barely wanted to come back. Now, as a 17-year-old young woman, ka-rate has become my life. I get so excited to come in and share my knowledge with the rest of the students at OKKA. Every per-son within the OKKA family has influenced my growth as a person; from the old instructors like Mr. Jordan, Mr. Ware, Mr. Goodman, and Mr. Bell, to the newer instructors like Mr. Brian, Mr. Young, and Mr. Walker, to the Little Dragons. However, the person I have become closest with would definitely have to be Ryan Sickles. We started this journey together 11 years ago, he has always been there for me, pushing me along, and he has truly become the big brother I never had. The class, CIT and the members in it, I have also learned so much from, and I thank them. All in all, I am so thankful to God for giving me my ability to do karate and to teach it to oth-ers and to everyone that has helped me become who I am today…a 4th de-gree black belt!!

Congratulations Ms. Cosgrove

I remember you assisting in the Little Dragons class when you were barely old enough not to be one. Today, you still inspire the Little Dragons as well as the rest of your students. On behalf of myself, Kyoshi Dar-gan and your fellow instructors, we would like to con-gratulate you on your Fourth Degree. Keep up the hard work!

Jared Wilkins I have been in Karate for six years. I started because I wanted to know how to defend myself. I got this far because of the help of my instructors and I especially want to thank my dad for helping me through my first and second degree black belt tests. My favorite thing I ever learned in my six years at the dojo is grappling. I like it because I’m good at it and I enjoy it. My favorite weapon is the Sai. I like them because of the way you can hold and strike

with them two different ways. I enjoy being at the OKKA Kenpo Karate academy and working my hardest to a higher rank.

Ryan Wilkins I’ve been in Karate for 3 years. I joined because I wanted to know how to defend myself. I got this far because of the help of my instructors. I want to thank Shihan DeGori. I also appreciate the help of my dad and my brother. My favorite weapon is the Chucks and my favorite Kata is Pinan Shodan. I look forward to getting my second degree black belt and my katana.

Brian Gold

I started karate as a Little Dragon at the Swedesboro School in March, 2004. Last year I earned my 1st degree black belt. Mr. Brian, my instructor asked me what it meant to be a black belt. At the time, I didn’t know what to say. So I did some thinking back about how my life has changed since I earned my black belt. I would have to say that I feel stronger and more confident than before. I feel very proud to wear my black belt. I also try to be a leader and represent my karate school the best way I know how. I am looking forward earning my second degree black belt and learning how to be a karate instructor.

I would like to thank my family for always supporting me in everything I do. I especially want to thank my instructors Mr. Brian and Mr. Ferguson. I have learned so much from them. Mr. Ferguson has been there from the beginning. I would have to say that Mr. Brian helps me be a better black belt every class. I wouldn’t be able to do this with out my instructors, my family and my friends.

Good Luck Brian Brian Gold, you continually amaze us with the accomplishments you have made! You have come so far with all your hard work, focus and determination. We are so proud of you ! Love, Dad, Mom, Aidan & Gammy.

Thank You!

Christopher Paul Hi! My name is Christopher Paul. I am a fifth grader now and I started karate when I was in kindergarten. After receiving my little dragons black belt, I moved to the juniors where I received my first and second degree black belts. I’m now testing for my third degree black belt. A time I will never forget is when I had a birthday party at the dojo. Mr. Theurer was the instructor. I was

up in front of the group and we were doing a split kick and I fell. I had fun at all the boot camps I attended.

I would like to thank my family for supporting me through thick and thin. I would also like to thank Mr. Sickles, Ms. Cosgrove, Mr. Theurer, Mr. Goodman and Mr. Young for believing in me and for helping me with my katas. I would especially like to thank Shihan DeGori and Kyo-shi Dargan for not letting up on me.

When I get my third degree black belt, I’m going to rest for a little bit and probably do Tai Chi with my pop-pop.

Congratulations! Christopher Paul

We are sooooo proud of you. You are 11 years old and have devoted five years to

karate. You have achieved your third degree black belt. Congratulations, we love you.

Love, Mom, Mom-mom and Pop-pop

Steven Bounds I began karate training in February of 2006 in the Deptford School. Since then I have transferred to the Pitman School to continue training. Since starting karate, I have participated in many leadership seminars, 2 Boot Camps, and 1 tournament. I would like to thank my family and all my instructors who

helped me in my goal towards becoming a Black Belt.

Daniel Slobodjian

Hello, my name is Daniel Slobodjian. I have been attending karate for three years. Ever since I earned my first degree black belt I have been able to build up my self-confidence a great bit and was able to improve my martial arts skills to a new level. Even though I have improved, I still have so much to learn about karate. My old goal was to become a third de-gree black belt, but now I wish to attend karate until I find something bigger and better (which won’t be any time soon). I started with Mr. Lenau and Mr. Goodman as my instructors. Mr. Theurer has been my instructor since I was a purple belt. He has been a great teacher. I hope Mr. Theurer continues to be my instructor because he has great teaching methods and is a great person and role model.

A month or two after I earned my black belt, I was asked to join CIT and I gladly accepted. Being taught by Shihan DeGori, Kyoshi Dargan and Mr. Theurer in CIT for a year has made me learn twice as much and has made me a better student and helping out in classes. I have helped out and kept score in tournaments, as have helped out at two board breaking seminars and one boot camp. Also, I competed in the last two tournaments.

I give great thanks to everyone I’ve mentioned so far. Also, I would like to thank Mr. Ferguson for being at every class and for help-ing me. Thanks to my parents for supporting me and pushing me to stay when it got hard or I was feeling overwhelmed. Thanks Mom for al-ways taking the time to drive me and stay to watch the classes, no mat-ter how busy you were. Thank you everyone.

Emilie Schlager I started at OKKA in November of 2006. My mom surprised us by saying we were going to go to karate one night after school. I said, “Yes!” After my first class I felt great about it and knew I wanted to join. My first instructor was Mr. Goodman. When he joined the Marines, Mr. Theurer became our in-

structor. He helped me become a black belt candidate. My instructors have been great. I have attended two boot camps, and the following seminars self-defense, kama, double chucks and board breaking. These have all helped my with my goal of becoming a black belt.

I would like to thank my parents, especially my dad, for going through the training with us. Thanks too, to all my instructors. I would like to become an instructor in training.

Tori Schlager I started doing karate when I was nine years old. I like doing katas. My favorite ones are Wansu and Ananku. My favorite combinations are numbers 7 and 10. I would like to thank my instructors, Mr. Theurer, Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Zurlo for help-ing me along the way. I tend to be shy in groups and karate has helped me become more confi-dent and out-going. My goal is to develop self-defense skills to help

protect myself and others. My parents have supported and encouraged me to continue my training toward a black belt.

Allie Schlager

I started karate when I was 11 years old in November, 2006. I was very excited when my mom told me that I was going to do karate. I have enjoyed making friends in my classes. My instructors have been a great help in my training. My dad and brother and two sisters started karate with me. Training with my family has been a great way to bond with them. I love doing karate and would like to be an instructor in training once I earn my black belt. I participated in my first tournament in November.

I would like to thank my mom and dad for paying for my classes, and their patience and encouragement. I thank my instructors, Mr. Theurer, Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Zurlo.

Mark Schlager

I started Karate training in November ’06. The family karate concept was intriguing and a good opportunity to spend quality time with 4 of my 5 children (the 5th child was one when we started). We have had many fun family moments during our training, seminars and boot camps.

I thank Shihan, Mr. Goodman, Mr. Brian, Mr. Fergu-son and Mr. Zurlo for their professionalism as instructors. Their response to various situations during training is proof of their proper training and their dedication to the students and the mar-tial arts. I plan to continue my martial arts training with my family as an effec-tive family bonding activity and as part of our mental, physical and spiritual fitness program.

Did you know…. Okinawa Kenpo Karate not only offers the finest instruction of Martial Arts...But we also offer the Best in Pilates, Mixed Martial Arts and Tai-Chi.

Ryan Sickles My name is Ryan Sickles and I am 17 years old. I started karate back in 1998. At that time I was a very shy and withdrawn person. An obstacle that karate has helped me overcome, so much so that now they can’t keep me quiet. Over these almost 11 years, karate has always been a very important part of my life. I think it’s the best thing both for the mind and body. I hope to con-tinue my training after I graduate high school, eventually being able to achieve at the very least my fifth degree. My other goals are to travel to

Japan eventually and train under the masters in Okinawa. There are many people I’d like to thank for my success. First, I’d

like to thank Shihan DeGori and Kyoshi Dargan, without them I would-n’t even have a school to go to. Secondly, I’d like to thank all the in-structors who have helped me over these 11 years. A few of whom in-clude Mr. Theurer, Mr. Hoskins, Mr. Sinka, Mr. Young and Mr. Walker. There are many friends I’d like to thank for their support. First, I have to thank my “sister” Amanda Cosgrove, though we argue like crazy I don’t know what I’d do without her. I’ve probably been friends with her the longest out of everyone at the karate school. She’s the type of person who just doesn’t know the meaning of the word quit, and she will always do her best for her friends. I would also like to thank Jay Ballard, Logan Greer and Alex Vizzinni. These guys have been with me since the beginning. And of course, I have to thank Mom and Dad for getting me started on this long road to success.

Samantha M. Buck

During the past two years I have

worked very hard practicing, attending seminars, competing in tournaments and even winning four trophies! My favorite part about karate is getting to break boards and learning the extreme katas.

I know I could not have made it this far without the encouragement and support that I have received from Mr. Theurer and Mr. Ferguson. They always told me that they believed in me, and knew that I could do anything I put my mind to. Now, I believe in me too!

Angelica Hosmer Hello, my name is Angelica Hosmer. In my

career at OKKA, I have found that karate isn’t all about fighting, hitting things and breaking boards. It is a way of life. It is learning skills (respect, dis-cipline, responsibility and commitment) that I will be able to use in school, a job and anything else I decide to do in my future.

I first started karate classes when I was in third grade, and my mom wanted me to be able to practice a little self-discipline and defend myself against bullies. Who know it would last this long??? I have learned a lot but have also had many fun times, especially tournaments, seminars and gladiator nights. But, I think some of the most fun has come from all the people I have met along the way. At times it is like having another family.

There are many people I would like to thank: my family who has supported me and given me unconditional love, my friends and fellow black belts for supporting me through hard times, Kyoshi and my mom for believing in me and helping me all the way to my third degree black belt, and Karen Keebler for making my uniform look so good with her sewing and embroidery skills.

Congratulations Mr. Sickles

Since your early training you have always worked diligently to better yourself. Now, we have the privilege of seeing all that hard work be translated into your teachings. On behalf of myself, Kyoshi Dargan and your fellow instructors, we would like to congratulate you on your Fourth Degree. Keep up the hard work!

I began my black belt journey when my MeMom decided to give me karate lessons as a Christmas gift. She had heard wonderful things about Kyoshi Dargan and his school. I began my training in January 2006. I worked hard to make sure I was prepared at each belt ceremony opportunity to advance to a higher level. I also participated in many boot camps, everyone that we could fit into our family schedule, in order to accelerate my

development towards my first degree black belt. This has allowed me to achieve my first degree black belt candidate in just about two years. I have continued to work hard and train to progress and be prepared to be a second degree black belt candidate at this time.

I have had the help of a lot of different people during this journey and would like to thank my parents, grandparents, sister Gabrielle, and the many instructors at the boot camps and board breaking events. I would like to thank all the black belts and advanced belts at the West Deptford School for their support and guidance. In particular I would like to thank Kyoshi Dargan for all his guidance and support. He has taught me the true meaning of Focus, Discipline, and Respect. He has helped me to use these principles to become a better human being in support of the lessons my family has taught me as well. I have applied these lessons to many areas of my life, and this has allowed me to achieve great success. I use them to excel in many areas including baseball and other athletic endeavors as well as music and art. I have also used them to advance from being a very good student to an excellent student.

I have many fond memories but some of my favorites are marching in the Woodbury parades. A lot of my friends from school saw me in the parade and learned of my involvement in OKKA. They were very impressed that I was learning martial arts skills, and they thought “it was cool”. I also really enjoy working with the younger children, it is awesome to help them train and grow in karate. I am very proud to wear the OKKA uniform, and will work hard through the years to be an ambassador of the organization and uphold its fine reputation.

Congratulations Josh Ammirato

We are immensely proud of you and your accomplishments!

James J. Sack, Jr. In September, 2006, I was a guest at a birthday

party at the Deptford OKKA school. My dad and I were impressed with the instructor, Mr. Young, and the program. I joined as a Little Dragon in December, 2006. After transferring to the Pitman school, I was invited to join the leadership program.

My experience at a tournament in early 2008, did not win me a trophy, but the experience was in-valuable. I learned how to perform in front of a crowd while trying to overcome my nervousness. I’m looking forward to future tournaments. Seminars that I have attended include Kama and board breaking. My favorite weapon is nun-chucks.

I have calculated that if I work very hard, and work toward this goal every day, I can become a red belt by the time I am 63 years old.

Karate has changed my life forever and the way I view life. Chris Zurlo got me interested in the Okinawa Kenpo Karate program a few years ago, after attending a lesson of karate on buddy week. My first instructors were Mr. Goodman, who is currently serving as a Ma-rine, and Mr. Ferguson, who is still with the Swedes-boro school today. They taught me the basics of karate from focus, discipline and respect to my first katas. Then after a year or so, Mr. Goodman left and Mr. Theurer took his place. At first, I was upset that Mr. Goodman left, but learned that Mr. Theurer was a good guy after all. He taught me my intermediate to my advanced level katas. Just from watching Mr. Theurer teach and actu-ally doing the katas I knew he knew his stuff. At an intermediate rank I was introduced into the CIT program where I learned from Mr. Glass’ “Martial Arts Teachings Book” on how to become a better person and how to teach people become better students in karate and everyday life. After all the laughs and all the pain my fellow students and I have learned a lot from karate. I would like to thank Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Theurer for watching over me and helping me achieve my goal of be-coming a black belt and a better person in society.

Johnathan Rivera It’s been a few years since I began karate, and it’s been awesome. Ever since I earned my first degree black belt, I’ve been helping Kyoshi Dargan, working with the little dragons and intermediates. I wanted to cry because I’m really happy that I’m doing it. I wouldn’t have made it this far without Kyoshi Dargan and all the other black belts.

I was a lonely kid with no friends and nobody beside me; I was very shy and quiet. School was very rough and scary; people making fun of me, people beating me up and calling me stupid. I grew up with a learning disability and people treated me different. I felt nobody cared about me. I was very sad and started to lose hope when someone saved me, someone who really cares about me. That someone is Kyoshi Dar-gan and Shihan DeGori. They really changed my life. I now face my fears and I’m not alone and afraid anymore. I practice really hard to be a great martial artist, winning trophies and medals in tournaments and earning respect from other people.

I’m now focused, disciplined and I respect people. This has changed my personality and given me confidence and courage to be-lieve in myself.

I want to thank Kyoshi Dargan and Shihan DeGori for their work of getting me this far and believing in me. I also want to thank my par-ents for putting me in karate. I’m ready to earn my second degree black belt and make Kyoshi Dargan and Shihan DeGori proud.

To be a Sensei, that is my dream, my goal. Also, karate is my sport and I love to spar, IT’S AWESOME.

Harold D. Glass In December, 2006, I earned my second degree black belt and began to look forward to earning my third degree black belt. Here I am, a Sandan. This completes the three goals I set back in February 2004. I have been studying Tai Chi for a number of years,

but never desired to teach. Approaching my 70th birthday, Shihan De-Gori began encouraging me to teach Tai Chi. So it will be.

Now my next two goals are the teaching of Tai Chi, but continue to train in Kenpo Karate, but at a slower pace.

I have reached the level of Sandan with the help of a lot of people. My instructors, Shihan DeGori< Kyoshi Dargan (his birthdays are fun), Mr. Theurer, Mr. Walker, Mr. Goodman, Mr. Young, Mr. Sickles and Ms. Cosgrove, and a host of fellow black belts. Mr. Hoskins was the greatest for my ego. Thanks to my wife, my greatest supporter and grandson, Sandan Christopher M. Paul, Jr. To add to this black belt graduation was the great pleasure to earn the rank of Sandan with my grandson, Christopher M. Paul, Jr.

Matthew Aruta I started taking karate in 2002 at U and B Ultimate Mar-tial Arts. I became a green belt under the instructions of Sensei Ubelacker, Sensei Beaver, and Sensei Beaver after three years of training. After that school closed I went to another school taught by a man, who’s name I can't remember, who trained with my previous instruc-tors. I trained there for under half a year. Then I came to train under Kyoshi Dargan where I have been for about 1

1/2 to 2 years. My favorite moments were sparring with my instructors, watching

and participating in a lot of kids grappling with Sensei Ubelacker, a parade at the end of which was a picnic with the students and instructors, and training to be a good martial artist.

My goals are to become a better martial artist and to get a black belt. Everything I have done has been accomplished thanks to the support and criticism of my dad, the persistence of my mom, and the diligence and pa-tience of my instructors.

Kendall Gordon I started karate 2 1/2 years ago at the age of nine. My favorite karate moment was when I got to move to the advanced class after receiving my brown belt. My short term goal is to continue training and doing well in school. My long term goal is to get an advanced black belt and maybe teach karate one day. I want to thank my parents for always getting me to practice and my instructors for inspiring me to become a black belt.

Michael Young Hi, my name is Mike Young.

This evening you are witnessing his-tory. I’m receiving a fourth degree black belt, which is like a “Degree in Martial Arts.” Few have accom-plished such a high achievement. Not because they couldn’t, but because they never set the goal. I mean in any area of their life. When you want something, you go out and get it. Or make it happen. Whether it be exercise, get a degree, buy a TV, or do laundry. You set your mind to it. Remember the mind controls the body. The way you think s the way you will feel. The goals you set and obstacles you conquer are just a test or a chance to succeed. So, be the first to smile, say hello and laugh. You become what you practice most. This is what life is all about. Being born a human is a rare event in itself and we waste too much time thinking about what we should be doing...and not doing anything at all.

Congratulations Mr. Young

Your inspiration and energy are rarely found. You have always worked hard! On behalf of myself, Kyoshi Dargan and your fellow instructors, we would like to congratulate you on your Fourth Degree.

Aryaman Shanigaram

I joined karate in August 2006. My beginning

day was a little scary when I first joined. Then it got better. I like a lot of things, but I like sparring the most. I also like appreciation night and Halloween where we got to wear our costumes.

Mr. Theurer helped me a lot. So did my parents. My goal is to become a black belt.

Christian Flamini I began my martial arts training when I enrolled as the first student in the Swedesboro school. Mr. Jordan was my first instructor and taught me the basic requirements of being a martial arts student. Mr. Leneau was also one of my instructors and taught me the meaning of discipline and provided

me with the required tools to obtain my Little Dragons black belt. Currently Mr. Theurer is my instructor and continues to teach me

focus, discipline and respect. He has groomed me to receive my first degree black belt and the training to now obtain my second degree black belt. Mr. Theurer leads by example and has provided me with guidance on how to be an upstanding individual and how to conduct myself in a confident manner. Under Mr. Theurer’s leadership I am able to achieve my short term goal of receiving my second degree black belt and my long term goal of obtaining my third degree black belt.

I would also like to thank Mr. Fergson for his help during my time at the Swedesboro school. Mr. Ferguson helped me when I was a Little Dragon. Mr. Ferguson’s kindness, patience and caring manner made m journey much more rewarding. I hope that both Mr. Theurer and Mr. Ferguson feel that I did my best and made them proud.

Kaustubh Shroff I started Okinawa Kempo when in March of 2005. My instactor was Kyoshi Dargan who made sure that I did things perfectly. He taught me discipline and respect to the highest level. After him I want to want to thank my Parents who enrolled me in karate. They bought me eve-rything I required. I wanted to quit sometimes but then I remembered all those who believe in me, so that kept me from dropping out of Karate. In these few years I have achieved some trophies and medals from the tournaments.

My favorite event in karate is the tournament itself. So for all the people who have helped me hats off to you guys.

Shane Donnelly

I started OKKA as a white belt in the Little Dragons Basic Pro-gram in October of 2004 because I wanted to try something new. My first instructor was Sensei Jordan. He made karate fun, however still taught me the basics. Mr. Ferguson was also my first instructor and was always there for me and always will be. Mr. Jordan and Mr. Ferguson helped me train for my first tour-nament when I was an orange belt. That was in March 2005. I got so scared that I cried for about 5 minutes. I actually received a first place trophy in sparring and a second place trophy in Kata. After Mr. Jordan left, Mr. Leneau became my new instructor. At this point I was in the Intermediate Program and was a yellow belt. I really like Mr. Leneau because he mainly focused on sparring, which I discovered I was really good at. Then I competed in my second tourna-ment; I improved so much in sparring that I won second place this time. At this tournament I also took home a first place Kata trophy. My next teacher was Mr. Goodman. He was my instructor for the Intermediate and Advanced programs. He inspired me to work to-ward my black belt because he helped me focus on the “art” of Karate. He focused the sharp movements of each Kata and it helped me begin to understand the importance of practice and attention on each move-ment. The best thing about Mr. Goodman was his ability to encourage me when I doubted myself. Mr. Theurer has been my instructor since Mr. Goodman enlisted in the Marine Corps. Mr. Theurer has been so helpful in my steps toward black belt. He has taught me how important hard work is when you are training for any belt. He pushes us to our limits in stam-ina and then just a little farther, to show us that sometimes our idea of our limits is not what we can really do. I would like to thank my Mom for taking me to Karate, even when I didn’t want to go. My dad, my sister, and family for supporting me during Saturday belt exams and tournaments. I would also like to thank my instructors for teaching what it takes to be a BLACKBELT!

Nicholas Musumeci April 2004, I joined the OKKA Little Dragons. Last year I earned my first degree black belt. In the journey for black belt, I faced the greatest challenge of my youth. At times I felt that I was not going to make it through the training, but karate is more than physical training. I have experienced the true meanings of

“focus”, “discipline” and “respect”. I enjoyed participating in many OKKA activities, tournaments, board breaking seminars and leader-ship seminars.

My favorite karate memory was receiving my first degree black belt. Sensi Theurer’s enthusiasm and precise teachings have given me extra motivation to set higher goals in karate and in everything I do. He always knows what it takes to get the best out of me. Mr. Ferguson has been great, he has been teaching me since I started taking karate lessons. I would like to especially thank my mother and father for their support in karate and everything else I do.
