Last Month, Russian History ••. Now, Russian Art?

Last month readers were subjected to a (fortunately) rather brief essay on Russian history. This article focuses on the heart of the matter - what you 'll see at the Moscow Treasures And Traditions exhibit, which the club will visit on Sat. Sept. 8.

Among the most stunning pieces of art you'll see are the famous painted icons. Profoundly spiritual in nature, these paintings are meant to convey the extreme importance of the Church in Russian society. The fact that the Church survived the reign of the antireligionist Communists is testimony to that. The icons vary tremendously in size and depict a wide variety of people and manifest a great array of artistic influences . Depending on the time period in question, the work might exhibit a somber quality; others might

be overwhelming in their elaborate ornamentation.

Of possibly even more signficance than the icons is the plethora of metalwork. Of the various forms, none is more stunning than the work of Moscow jewelry craftsmen. Their gold and silver work, often decorated with precious stones and bright enamels, often featuring fine filigree lace and delicate niello patterns, exhibit a virtuosity of execution and refinement of decoration. It is unfortunate that many of the pieces made earlier than the 15th century are rare . This is largely attributed to the unwanted attentions of the mongols, who apparently didn 't have the appreciation of fine culture that others did .

Jewelry is but one type of metal work that is on display. From the

MOSCOW TREASURES &TRADITIONS

TM

forests of northern Russia came aform that continues to the present day. Called the Koush, the earliest examples were carved wooden bowls, dippers, and cups. Koushi in metals date from the 1300s; Moscow craftsmen had devised their own unique version by the 1500s - low and wide with a flat bottom. As the influence of Western European culture spread, the Koush became less used for drinking. Rather they continued as tokens of esteem and were awarded by tsars for service to the state.

During the nineteenth and early .twentieth centuries, Russian gold and silver work changed dramatically . There was not only a revival of old designs, but also the flowering of new styles of ornamentation.

Other materials were used as well. The exhibition contains some fine textile work characterized by a love of color. It has been said that this stems from a need to compensate for the subdued character of the landscape, the desire to "beautify" reality, and a love of dream and legend.

In addition to those forms mentioned , the exhibit contains examples of gold-brocaded silk and other garments, porcelain, plus an exhibition of avantgarde art. Simply there is something for everyone, or more precisely a good deal for everyone to enjoy. Make your plans to see this incredible exhibit with the Club. Just send a check to the Club P.O. Box ($6.50 for adults, $5.50 for those 60 or older, and $4.00 for children 3-12) . It will be an afternoon you won't forget.

(Editor's note: Columnist Thomas B. Nast is on vacation this month. I've chosen to reprint one of my favorite Nast columns, which originally appeared in January 1987. Tom, without the benefit of two year government studies, solved the Audi riddle through unerring logic. As an Audi owner, I agree there are lots of other reasons to not like Audi-DL).

The Accelerating Truth In my capacity as Assistant Deputy

Associate Car Guru To The World, I have been consulted in various taverns and Thai restaurants concerning Audi's "sudden acceleration problem." "Did you see that report on Sixty Minutes?" I am invariably asked. The answer is no, I don't have a TV. "Well, what do you think of it?", "it" referring to "sudden accelerations" and not Sixty Minutes or TV about which my views are known and easily inferred.

I think Audi has a bad rap coming. I don't think that the so-called "sudden acceleration problem" is what that rap should be coming for.

My conceptual difficulty with "sudden acceleration" is that nobody has articulated to me just what causes it. Viewers of Sixty Minutes report that it is a computer malfunction. This cannot be. The computer in the present generation of injected cars controls ignition and fuel injection; it does not control throttle opening, i.e. airflow .1

Only the driver controls airflow. If a

1 A small air bleed is supplied during cold start and cold running operations by an auxiliary air valve. This valve, which is thermally controlled, will supply only enough air to cause a fast idle. Likewise, the deceleration valve (L jetronic only), which is vacuum controlled, admits only minor quantities of air. Neither could cause sudden acceleration, and both are controlled independent of the computer. Thus, in the unlikely event that auxiliary air or deceleration valve failed at the same time as the computer, the result would not necessarily be a harmonious improvement in engine operation.

talls by Thomas B. Nast

... there are so many real reason to not like Audi, it seems almost criminal to choose a fictitious one ...

computer malfunctions and enriches the mixture a meaningful amount, the engine will stall unless more air is allowed in to mix with the fuel. This requires a little right foot action by the driver. Similarly, if the computer malfunctions and leans the mixture, the engine will stall regardless of what the driver does. So much for computer errors.

Some more facts : This "sudden acceleration problem" only occurs on cars equipped with automatic transmissions. Although Audi has taken the brunt of complaints, there are eight reports about Mercedes 300E models and the NHTSAjust scuttled a requested study of 1984-86 Honda Accords, meaning there are a fistfull of complaints about them. I recall hearing of allegations against VW and GM cars, but this is vague recollection. Given the diversity of fuel delivery systems, transmissions, and linkages on these various cars, it is improbable they share a common latent mechanical flaw.

Until some logical mechanical ex-

planation is offered (such as a malfunctioning cruise control), I suggest that "sudden acceleration" occurs when the accelerator is suddenly depressed, instead of the brake. Pilot error, no more, no less.

And while I hate to say it, what kind of a person drives an Audi with an automatic transmission? Probably a person who is not sensitive to the workings of a car, and who knows how to complain loudly when a car doesn't work the way s/he thinks it should. More bluntly put, an automotive imbecile with too much money and influence . Audi, of course, cannot publicly say that overpaid dolts drive their cars. But their approach to damage control makes me wonder if they're borrowing White House staff. The first thing I hear is one of their exec's saying that Audi may pull out the U.S. market, the twin headaches of deteriorating$/ D M ratio and sudden acceleration charges being more than the doctor can cure. Running from the problem is no way to win hearts and minds, of course, and a loud Bronx cheer was heard rising about the land. Backing off from this statement, Audi has rested on general denials. Lacking a presumption of innocence, one would expect from Audi an engineering explanation of why "sudden acceleration" can't happen but if they've given one I haven't heard of it.

Frankly, no tears would be shed here if Audi abandoned this market. I would view it as a form of coitus interuptus. Their advertising theme is "The Art of Engineering'', but what they need is a little more science in their production. I have known many Audis, and they are especially troublesome. Their weakest areas are electrical, brakes and valves, through dishonorable mention should be given to transmissions, clutch, suspension and fuel injection. (I am reminded of a BMWN A track session at PIR a few years ago, where the new Audi used as a contrasting model started shedding significant

Page 7: f~ncours...Wednesday Night Open Track August 29th the club will be holding an open track session at SIR. This is the only time this year that we will be having an open track session

bits from its front suspension.) Audis have a sixth sense about where the repair shop is, and frequent it all too ?fte!1 and at great expense. Their stylmg 1s always contemporary but never enduring. Their warranty practices are severe. (For example, a car serviced by th~ book needed a valve job at 19,000 miles. Audi paid for one valve, sans labor.) Do you know anyone who has bought a second Audi?

While some credit is due to Audi's engineering, it is less than they claim. Full time four wheel drive was pioneered by Furguson on the Furguson Fours of the early seventies (installed in Jensen and Ford models, as I recall). Mercedes had a five cylinder motor first, I believe. Fuel injection ABS etc. was neithei;. developed n~r firs~ applied by Audi . Audi gets credit for a low drag coefficient and some 4wd differentials (none as clever as the Torsen however), but that's about it. '

So what we have here are really flawed cars sold by a really arrogant company getting a bad name for completely the wrong reason. I don't know why this upsets my finer sensibilities but it does; there are so many real rea~ sons not to like Audi, it seems almost criminal to choose a fictitious one. The next time "sudden acceleration" comes up at the cocktail party, start asking the hard questions (like "how") and take the third-hand answers with a grain of salt. And keep that salt well away from your host's Audi, lest you send it scrambling back to the shop.

(Editor's Note: Marcus Schack's 1987 535i in Diamond Black was the winner of the Late Six Cylinder class. Entrants' Choice and Best of Show trophies at the 1990 Concours d'Elegance. Here Marcus reveals some of his sources.)

As promised to numerous people at the Concours, I am now going to reveal some of my sources for the parts ~n my car. Given the number of quest10ns, I feel that maybe by putting it in writing I will be able to share some of this information with all of you.

• The strut bar, the BMW wheels and Pirelli tires on my car, the black 1987 535i, were purchased from:

Robert Crandall at: Pacific International Motorsport 1636 North Brian Street Orange, California 92667 Phone: (714) 542-4095 FAX: (714) 974-6180

Tell him that Marcus Schack from Vancouver, Canada gave you his name and he might give you a bit of a break. He may not, but then it's worth a try .

• The Cosmoline remover that I found to work the best was a product called Acrysol, purchased from:

Kent Industries Product #32185 4500 Euclid Ave. Cleveland, Ohio 44103 Phone: (216) 39 l-S300

This is amazing stuff. It is made to be used on brand new cars and does not harm the paint.

Suspension Upgrade: • I have found that the current

wheel / tire / shocks / springs and bar combination is one that I could recomm.end if ~o~ like a better handling car with a mm1mum loss of ride comfort.

Stage 1 The first item I would recommend is

a strut bar to minimize body flex in the front end. The one I purchased from Pacific International Motorsport is one of the nicest looking, strongest and most perfect fitting bars around complete with a Motorsport Logo. It really

works and holds the front end in check very nicely.

Stage 2 The suspension was then upgraded

with the Bilstein Sport Kit which replaces the original shocks and springs with stiffer springs and gas filled shocks. Contrary to popular belief, the ride does not become uncomfortable. Yes it is firmer, but it sure handles nicely'. This package will lower the car by about one inch and I have not found that to be a problem.

Stage 3 The last item in this combination is

the addition of a set of BMW alloy wheels and Pirelli P600, 225 / 60 ZR 15, from a 1989 five-series. This really made this whole package work and I would strongly recommend it. There is no bodywork involved and plenty of clearance in the fender wells and around the shock towers. By the way, if anyone needs a set of 4 TRX Alloy wheels in excellent condition, do I have a bargain for you!

. Well, that's about all I can remember of the promises I made but if anyone has any other questions, just call me and I will be more than pleased to answer them if I can.

Concours 1990 Last year, we hoped for it and this

year we got it. Sun that is - and lots of it.

We knew right from the beginning that the coffee lattes would have to be iced, and that the interior judges would soon ask for a different area of the car to judge (the black leather tends to radiate quite a bit of heat).

Attendance was nothing to write home about, 16 cars in total, as there were probably more cars brought for transport than there were entered into the Concours. Regardless though, the participants enjoyed a relaxing day in the shade from the famous willow in the mid-field.

With the ampitheater finally built, the afternoon was further enhanced by Laura and the Sukutai Marimba and Dance Troupe. To the delight of many picnickers, they played an assortment of Zimbabwean folk music. Autogear of Bellevue provided a place to kabitz about different auto genre. Armed with books, t-shirts, and miniatures, Autogear soothed several "So do you have anything on the 507?"

Regressing from last years show, the best of show winner simply was the entrant who accumulated the most points. Marcus Schack brought in top honor with his ultra clean '87 535. He will carry with him both a revolving trophy, to be passed on the next Best of

Congratulations and thanks to all the entrants and judges for their hard work, and a job well done.

Concour Kudos This year's club Concours d'Elegance

was a super event. After our first bout with rain last year, the sunshine returned for the 1990 event. For some reason, the turnout was a little low this year. Usually we get about 250 people. This year there was only about 150.

Bob and Mason Kirby, father and son, were the Concours chairmen this year and did a super job. Not only did the event run smoothly, they added a few new touches. They arranged for an espresso bar; a welcome addition for early arrivals that also sold cold drinks later when the temperature reached 85 degrees. The Kirby's also arranged an African band that played for an hour and a half. The music was wonderful, out of the ordinary, and added a very festive feel. The guys from Auto Gear set up a booth offering their quality wares including models , books and clothing.

The usual Concours charms were there too , of course. Beautiful BMWs set on the lovely Chateau Ste. Michelle grounds. The shaded picnic area in the trees. Some unusual non-BMWs in attendance (a '57 Thunderbird and a '36 Ford pickup). And the chance to wander about, seeing old friends and making new ones.

Gail Davidson from Victoria brought down a stunning trophy for the Andy Davidson Memorial Award. Andy was an active club member and clean car fanatic who died of cancer in the Spring of 1989. Andy's widow has chosen to honor Andy's memory by presenting this award to the Best of Show winner at our Concours d'Elegance. There is a perpetual trophy passed from winner to winner. But there is also an annual trophy the winner gets to keep. This year's trophy was a custom soapstone carving of a dog sled and team on a hardwood base. Appropriately, the winner was Marcus Schack of Vancouver who is a close friend of Gail Davidson and knew Andy well. Andy would be pleased.

New State Of The Art In Sports Sedans: The BMW MS

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey ... In 1987, BMW introduced a car that brought BMW's traditional blend of performance and practicality to a newly spectacular level : the MS . BMW Motorsport, the company's competition and sports division, had taken its legendary 3.S-liter dual-overhead-cam sports / racing engine, put it into a roomy S-Series sedan with sportier suspension, wheels and tires and an especially luxurious interior, and sent the resulting MS out into the world to surprise those who don't expect a sedan to be one of the world's bestperforming automobiles. "More than one Autobahn bully has been surprised by the sudden appearance of this very stock-looking Five Series BMW whistling by at l SO mph," reported Autoweek in a typical comment on the MS .

That first MS continued into 1988, then exited when BMW's all-new SSeries was introduced. But Motorsport's engineers were already at work on a new, better MS on the basis of the new S-Series. The new MS made its European debut in September 1988; in early 1990, it will go on sale in North America as a 1991 model.

Like its predecessor, the new MS is both engineered and built by BMW Motorsport, where more than 370 engineers, technicians and assembly specialists extend the limits of BMW performance for the racetrack and the road. BMW Motorsport's history began some 11 years ago with the M 1, an exotic mid-engine sports car powered by that same dual-overhead-cam 24-valve engine. In the meantime, Motors port has produced more than 4SO M ls and 2000 of the previous MS, and engineered the M3 and M6 as supersports versions of the BMW 3-Series and 6-Series .

In developing the new MS , Motorsport remained true to the concept of the earlier one while taking full advantage of the new S-Series' improved engineering and design. In addition, they gave the 24-valve engine a thor-

ough going-over, raising its already sensational level of performance even higher.

MS Engine: Racing Technology For The Road

The BMW Ml 's powerplant was one that had already proved itself as a race-winner; with mechanical fuel injection and without catalytic converter, the 3.S-liter inline six-cylinder engine delivered an impressive 277 horsepower when the BMW sports car went into limited production in 1978.

To meet demands for cleaner exhaust, the engine acquired electronic injection and a catalytic converter for its American debut in the MS and M6 in 1987; that version developed 2S6 hp and achieved EPA mileage ratings of 10 / 19 mpg, revealing some of the limitations of existing emission-control technology as applied to a very highperformance engine. So it was that the Motorsport engineers aimed at not only eliminating the performance and fuel-efficiency penalties but improving the engine's power output well beyond even the original non-emission-controlled Ml level.

Their work concentrated on numerous details. A slight increase in stroke was one of the measures: up from 84 to 86 mm, it raises displacement from 34S3 to 3S3S cubic centimeters, or 216 cubic inches. On the intake side, they optimized the shape of the air-filter housing; adopted hot-wire-controlled fuel injection, which minimizes the restriction on intake air; refined the intake pipes and ports; and developed new camshafts that open the valves wider. An electronically controlled dual resonance intake system provides two intake pipe lengths to the individual cylinders' throttles according to engine speed, contributing to both midrange torque and high-end power.

Intake airflow, the combustion process and exhaust flow are aided by the precision machining of the intake and exhaust ports and combustion chamb-

ers. And to further reduce restriction to the flow of exhaust gases, the engineers developed a stainless-steel exhaust header with equal, optimized lengths for each cylinder and adapted the large-volume catalytic converter and muffler system from the BMW 7SOiL. To extend the engine's rotational speed capability from the previous 6800 rpm to 7200 despite the longer stroke, the engineers designed a forged crankshaft with sophisticated computer-determined distribution of its internal masses and counterweights.

Measures taken to reduce the engine's exhaust emissions include not only the precision combustion process and large-volume catalytic converter, but an air pump that delivers secondary air to the converter until it reaches operating temperature.

The numerical results of all this detail refinement to an already outstanding engine are telling: With a maximum power output of 310 hp at 6900 rpm, and the abundant torque of 26S lb-ft at 47SO rpm, the new engine accelerates the MS from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.1 seconds, and powers it to an electronically governed top speed of l SS mph. EPA mileages are 11 / 20, up from the previous MS's ratings despite the new model's substantially higher power and greater weight. The MS's five-speed manual transmission, with acoustically decoupled shift lever for smooth shifting and quiet operation, has specific ratios to optimize performance and response throughout the speed range. A 2S-percent limitedslip differential is standard.

Chassis Tuned For High Performance

Typical of BMW Motorsport's attention to detail is the way the Motorsport engineers tuned the MS's chassis to match the engine's enormous capabilities.

Starting with the already highly acclaimed S-Series chassis - which inspired Road & Track, for instance, to

)J

j

proclaim the S3Si "a magnificently competent road machine" - Moto:sport's engineers honed t?~ MS chassis to a higher level of stab1hty ~nd .h~ndling with minimal sacrifices m ndmg comfort. They lowered the chassis by 20 mm (0.8 in.), increased the anti-roll bars' diameters (from 23 to 2S mm front from lS to 18 mm rear), and calib, rated the gas-pressure shock absorbers more firmly. To eliminate camber change due to passenger and cargo loads, they added a self-leveling system to the rear suspension. ~or sportier steering, the overall steenng ratio was reduced from 16.2: 1 to lS.6: 1 and the effort level was increased .

Larger, even more powerfu~ brakes are also part of the MS chasSIS package. At 12.4 in., the venti.late.d front discs are a half-inch larger m diameter than those of the S2Si / S3Si, and 0.2 in. thicker as well. To improve brake cooling, the wheel hubs are drilled t.hrough.

For a further improvement m brake cooling, unique two-piece wheels were developed for the MS. Their structur~l part is a light, strong five-spoke aluminum casting. A separate pressure-cast "blower" part, bolted to the five -spoke structure forms the wheel's outer face and combines both axial and radial action to draw in air and feed it efficiently to the brakes. The structural part is the same for all f~ll:r wheels; th,e blower sections are spec1f1c to the car s left and right sides. Not only do these wheels direct some 2S percent more cooling air to the brakes than the S3Si 's conventional wheels, but an unusual "asymmetrical hump" rim design helps keep the tire on the wheel when pres-

sure 1s lost. They are generously dimensioned: 17-in. diameter, 8 in. wide. So are the tires they carry, lowprofile 23S / 4SZR- l 7 sports wear.

Distinctive Equipment Outside And In

In addition to the highly distinctivelooking wheels and tires and identifying emblems front and rear, the new MS is also recognizable from the outside by its large twin exhaust outlets and specific aerodynamic treatment. Special bumper contours front and rear are completed at the bottom by "skirts" that, together with the lower body height, contribute to reduced aerodynamic lift at speed. It is notable, too that aerodynamic lift is perfectly bal~nced front and rear, with coefficients of lift (CL) equal at 0.12. The front bumper / spoiler has more ~ir intake area than that of other S-Senes models, divided into two wide slots (one for the radiator, one for the engine oil cooler) and a smaller opening for the alternator. Rocker-pan~! extensions complete the aerodynamic package and also contribute to t~e excellent lift characteristics. The MS 1s available in four exteriors - Alpine White Brilliant Red, Sterling Silver and J~t Black - of which the last is an intense black that is exclusive to the MS.

The MS's port-of-entry price is $S6,600. BMW of North America will import a limited number of ~~s du.ring calendar 1990, so exclu~1v1ty will take its place on the long hst of the MS's desirable attributes.

- BMW of North America Press Release

The Ultimate 0 Ship The BMW MS looks like nothing

but a plain vanilla S-Series, a hand. some car with naught but a couple of MS badges to warn the unsuspecting. But what we have here is the fastest 4-door production car on the planet. Car & Driver called the 7SOiL the best luxury sedan, while the MS was called the best performance sedan in the world. This "family" car is faster than a 300ZX Turbo, faster than a Mercedes SOO SL, and faster than any Corvette save the ZR-1.

The original MS was a real sleeper. It came only in black for North America. The new one comes in different colors, but is still extraordinarily restrained . The interior is supremely functional, but downright stark. Luxuriously stark. All this and four doors, a real back seat and huge trunk.

With all this go, a car better be able to stop and turn too. Road testers ha".e reported impeccable manners for this car. The brakes are huge and the new

· wheels are basically turbines to exhaust heat.

This is a big, practical sedan. Would anyone call it a sports car. Well 2S or 30 years ago, using the st~ndar~s of the day, the finest automotlv~ wnter who ever lived Ken Purdy, def med a sports car as "~ car that goes where it's pointed, stops ~hen bidde? an~ th~ rest of the time JUSt goes hke stmk. The MS is a sports car by that definition. But its also a hand-built (by Motorsport) luxury sedan. Quite a combination for $S6,000.

Fall Driving School Fall is just around the corner, and

with that comes the club's Fall Driving School. The date for this years Fall Driving School is Saturday, October 13th. If you missed the Fest Driving School, here's an opportunity to sign up for the final driving event of the year. The Fest Driving School was a sellout with people being turned away for lack of open spots. To avoid that happening to you, be sure to mail your registration in ear ly to assure yourself a spot in the Fall Driving School.

The school will follow pretty much the same format as the Fest Driving School except that we are working on acquiring a site for the tech and ground school, which will be held about a week before the driving school itself. Hopefully, on a Saturday so that everybody can attend and not miss the ground school.

By next newsletter I should have all the details worked out so that I can print the schedule and description of the school itself.

Britain's only "round the clock" race took on a different complexion this year when drivers, mechanics and fans began to assemble at Snetterton. The 11th running of BRSCC's event had a new joint sponsor, Esso, and the petroleum giant brought with it some new regulations. They were close to the international Group N reg's for the saloon car championship and the most obvious difference that change made was the adoption of racing tires.

As a result of that change the Class A cars would worry about their chances for a victory and the Class B drivers felt that they had a real chance for the checkered flag . Simply, racing tires means better grip, better braking and harder acceleration. When compounded by the dramatic reprofiling of the R ussell corner, which now requires heavy braking, a tight flick right then another left to negotiate its tight curves and then the foot to the floor for the drag race down the pit straight. This seemed to favor the Class B entries.

Qualifying times are not that important for a 24-hour race and the fact that it started to rain after the opening minutes of Friday's afternoon session left the 27-car field really a scrambled mess on the starting grid. The entry list showed 13 3000cc plus cars, 11 turbocharged Sierra RSs and Ford Sapphires and single, but factory-supported, Nissan and Saab cars against 5 BMW M3s and alone Mercedes 190E. Not all of the entries would make the field and in the wet conditions the Nissan 4 WD Skyline GT-R would pickup the pole position and next to it would be Bendigo Properties Sierra RS, driven by Mackay/ Carvell. The fastest BMW was the Guy Povey car and he put it into the fifth spot. The team Pirelli M3 was in seventh place and in the tenth spot was the Mercedes with a very strong group of drivers and a real shot at winning. Another strong driver lineup sat next to the Mere on the grid. David Pinkney had joined forces with Bristow and Mahony to run his·War-

ranty Holding backed Sapphire. This team was hoping for a set race since it was forced to run on Firestone Firehawk tires when the Hoosier race tires that they had planned on failed to last more than 15 laps.

On race day the first car to run into trouble was the Hassell Sierra which suffered complete brake failure on the WARM-UP lap. Hassell sat and watched the other 26 drivers start under a darkening sky as his crew went to work to rebuild the Ford's brake system. Surprisingly, the Nissan, with Odor at the wheel, was beaten to the first corner by Mackay. Behind them was Flux in the Saab, Davis in a Sierra, Monks Sapphire and Jeffrey leading his Pirelli te a m mate vanKouwen. After a couple of laps Odor closed in on Mackay and waited fo r the natural order of things to unfold, with the rapid Japanese coupe moving ahead of the Ford . The Skyline shadowed the Sierra and it became clear that the Janspeed Team was being cautious with its only car, an unknown quantity in endurance racing.

One driver who was not cautious was Monk, he pasted Davis and set about catching the Flux Saab which he did in the first twenty minutes of the race. After 45 minutes Mackay pitted and lost 10 minutes while a stub axle

was replaced. The Nissan led briefly but it too pitted for fuel. The point of the front running Class A cars vulnerability was shown as Flux had pitted after only 30 minutes for tires . When Monk pitted halfway thru the 2nd hour for tires , fuel and attention to the engine, the Class B cars took over the lead .

From the start the four leading Class B cars had put on a fine show. Jeffrey led with vanKouwen, vanDedem in the Mercedes and Allam nose-to-tail behind him. In the course of the first hour Allam fought his way to the head of the pack, pursued by the impressive vanDedem, vanKouwen and Jeffrey.

As the 2-hour mark approached so did the storm clouds and the rain began to fall. If the track was slick on racing tires, so too was the pit entry lane to change them. Three cars spun out as they tried to get in for the rain tires that they obviously needed. The worst of the spins put Mike Walker's Sierra into the end of the barrier and smashed the driver's door into the car and the driver, making it the first to retire.

Monk, still at the wheel of the leading Cosworth, was again pushing and regained the lead. The Nissan driver Williams showed what the 4WD car could do by moving into the second spot followed by the vanKouwen BMW and the Pinkey Sapphire. The favored Saab had problems when a blown tire put Flux into the gravel stop area and caused the yellow flag to come out. Bright sunshine and a stiff breeze soon dried the track and the early evening hour was a time for the larger cars to try to consolidate their positions.

At 9pm the SKF Sierra led, aided by strong drives by Millard and Bennington, the Nissan was running second only 45 seconds down and a full lap ahead of The Monk Sapphire. Fourth place was the first of the Class B cars, the Mercedes, with fifth being held down by the BMW of Povey/ Jeffrey / Clark. Into the night the class war

was definitely fal.ling to the Class B cars. Initially the remaining Team Pirelli BMW held the lead but in the 7th hour the Mercedes assumed the front spot and held it thru the hours of darkness.

At dawn, the Mere still was in first, leading the Povey M3 and thanks to a strong Williams effort, the Nissan was back up to third. The Neal / Wallace BMW was in fourth and still in contention.

Shortly after the first light the three leading cars all recorded their fastest laps. In attempting to assert their mounts in the bright morning light, the pace of the race was raised. The deadlock of the night time hours was not broken and the Mercedes continued in

the first place and started the long haul thru the midday with a now-weary crew.

Throughout the sunny morning the pattern continued. The Mere enjoyed a five-lap Cldvantage, but behind it the two BMWs and the Nissan, limited by its brake pad appetite, continually swapped places as routine pit stops were made. At 11 :OOam Williams brought the Nissan in for an unscheduled stop to replace a failed wheel bearing and while it didn't take long to correct, the M3s made their escape.

From that point on there was little race drama and at 4pm the Mercedes took the checkered flag . Hours after the finish and a long time after the

prize-giving, the news broke that the winning Mercedes was underweight and had been disqualified. The final order of finish, after 1765 miles was:

We don't have any of the details but Steve Soper won the fifth and sixth rounds of the German Touring Car Championship on the new Nurburgring in a Bigazzi M Team M3. Meanwhile 1989 French champion Jean Pierre Malcher won the first race in the . French Supertourisme Series in his Garage du Bae M3 beating a horde of Mercedes l 90s and a pair of Audi 80 Quattros at the Le Mans circuit. A little closer to home PIR was the site of the "July Blowout". The regional races on July 21st in the ITB Class had Terry Flanagan in his 2002 finishing first over a large 47-car field , which included the two New Jersey "Volvos from Hell". These wildly driven cars took 2nd and 4th and were separated by the third place finish of Gordon Jones in a 2002 from the Portland ACA chapter. Mike Helton finished a lap down after being bumped off the course at turn I by a late-braking Z car that used Mike 's 2002 for stopping aid . Mike was in fourth place at the time but was held off re-entering the track until all the cars went by. Steve Ingersoll's 1600 took fourth in the ITC group.

These very successful local drivers are headed for Heatland Park in Topeka, Kansas for the first "Regional Shootout" of the Improved Touring cars. We will have the results of this August 4th and 5th event in the next issue.

Another little piece of news on the Grand Prix tire wars that may be of interest. It seems that in Formula I the espionage has reached a very sophisticated state.

With the Pirelli runners setting some very quick times in qualifying at the Mexican GP, a Goodyear representative was spotted with a device which he pointed at the Pirelli shod cars as they came into the pits. It was actually an

infra-red camera capable of measuring the heat in the tire compound. The Pirelli men were reportedly unmoved by this and admitted that they had been conducting similar evaluations for some time and that their device was even able to do the measuring as the car sped by on the straight.

Big money in tire sales? It would seem so.

To close out this report, BMW tested seven drivers at the Vallelunga circuit in Italy for possible future duty on the touring car championship M Teams. Joerg Mueller, Peter Zakowski, Markus Liesner, Sascha Maasen, Helmut Kopp, Frank Kramer and Uli Melkus (an East German driver and BMW dealer) drove group A M3s under the watchful eyes of former BMW Junior Team and grand prix driver Marc Surer. We will probably be reporting on some of these drivers in the years to come, But, maybe they got drunk on the local vino, met a buxom Italian lady and decided to get out of racing and eat pasta till they grow old and fat, but probably not, well maybe the first two, the vino and the ladies, not the drivers.

Driving School on Sunday, July 15th. Getting SIR on a summer Sunday was expensive, but proved popular. Temperatures were in the 90s and the only problem was keeping the skid pad wet. Forty-seven students participated in the school; our largest turnout in some time. Despite the large turnout, a two to one ratio of students to instructors was maintained.

Morning stations included the wet skid pad, an autocross course and the hairpins portion of the track. In the afternoon we had instructed open track time. A good time was had by all. Most important, it was a safe event.

We hope to see participants at future driving events. Once is not enough!

BMW of North America's sales for the first quarter of 1990 were down 17% when compared to 1989 (14,488 vs. 17,746). The 3-Series, to be replaced in '91 , was off 25%. Only the 5-Series gained. The 5 now makes up 40% of BMW sales in North America. (Automotive News, The Wall Street Journal, BMW NA via Roundel).

Eberhard Von Kuenheim became chairman of BMW AG on January 1, 1970, at the age of 42. He is the longest serving chairman of any automobile manufacturer. (BMW Driver's Book).

BMW is studying automotive recycling. Currently 75 to 80 percent of the materials in a BMW are recyclable. Plastics account for 12 percent of the weight in a current BMW but the problem is one of disassembly. The solution is designing cars that are easy to pull apart after they have outlived their usefulness. BMW's objective is to have 100 percent of its cars recyclable by 2000.

But another problem is scrap from the manufacturing process. BMW is working on that too. In the Landshut plastic component plant, BMW recycles all of its scrap from producing dashboards and other components. (Roundel)

The new 2.0 and 2.5 liter twin-cam six cyclinder engines feature cylinder spacing identical to the 5.0 liter Vl2 and the 1.8 liter four of the 3 l 8i and 318is. The camshafts are driven by a pair of maintenance free chains. As in all recently introduced BMW engines, there is direct ignition (one coil per cylinder). The 2.5 liter version will show up in the 1991 525i here in the U.S. Horsepower will be 192. (Roundel)

Picasso Coach Builders. corporation of Rego Park, N.Y. offers a stretch limo version of the 750iL. The 56 inch addition allows room for a "computer bar" with crystal glasses and decanters, a remote TV system, intercom, mood lighting and an adjustable electric love seat, all tastefully done in leather and fine wood. The price is $140,000, about double the cost of the "standard" 750iL. (Roundel)

The BMW with the absolute mostest can currently be found in the Gulf State Kuwait. It was ordered by an unidentified but obviously very well off gentleman who resides there. The modifications were carried out by a number of specialist coachbuilders in Britain, Germany and France in the utmost secrecy. Not surprisingly it became known as the "Beast".

A 745i, the turbo 7 series, was used as the base car and the specification included 2" armour plating surrounding the rear passenger areas; special metallic strawberry redpaintwork; gold plated chrome; 3 halogen headlamps; Hartge bodykit; Hartge alloy wheels; 2 x 3.5 turbo engines; 8 wheel drive; buffalo leather upholstery; gold plated accessories; directional radar (in case you get Jost!); television, video, satellite dish; 300 watt sound system; 2 x BMW RIOO GS motorcycles.

Yes really, two motorcycles are packed flat and occupy the boot space. When required they can be removed and mounted in just 30 seconds!

The rumor is that work has almost finished on a new 7 finished to an even more outlandish specification. (BMW Driver's Book)

A man who tried to stop a thief stealing the stereo from his brandnew BMW car ended up Jocked in the trunk of the vehicle for 11 hours as the thief took a joyride around Hollywood and Beverly Hills, police said.

Greg Sykes, 6-foot 6-irich and weighing 200 pounds, was found early Friday in Hollywood by passers-by who heard him screaming for someone to Jet him out of his temporary jail.

He told police he had stopped his car in Beverly Hills to use a pay telephone and on returning to it found the theif trying to rip the stereo out.

But when he confronted the man he pulled a gun "and threatened to blow my head off." The gunman then forced Sykes into the cramped trunk and slammed the lid shut..

Detective Jim Tiampo said when Sykes' ordeal was over the thief had taken only what he wanted in the first place - the stereo. (Reuters News)

Says chief sales manager and board member Robert Buchelhofer: "In North America, the 24-valve 525i may even be sold for the same money as the twelve-valve model. You ask yourself how we can do it? Well, when your sales drop 28 percent in the first two months of the new year, you must act fast to stop the slide."

After the glory years of selling over 90,000 cars in North America and hoping for 100,000, BMW is now hoping that 1990 sales will equal last year's 64,000. Besides bringing out the new 3 l 8is and 4-door 318i, BMW will introduce the 850i this summer. Also, being considered for U.S. sale are the 520i and the catalystequipped diesel. The new 3-Series is expected to restore respectable unit counts in 1991. (Automobile).
