Goal #1: Acquire knowledge and skill to understand the basics of styling.

Over the semester, I accomplished this goal by understanding the basics of styling through hands on experience. Hands on experience included, but was not limited to, pulls and returns for garments, being on set and styling photoshoots as well as creating mood boards and acquiring clientele for styling. While accomplishing this goal, I learned showroom terms, like “pull” and “restocking fees” at department stores that require financial information just incase garments are stolen or damaged upon return. Here, it is also important to create mood boards so that the models and photographers or actors you are working with have a sense of the style that will be at hand. I also found it important to have proper communication with the team I am working with so that editorials, commercials and photoshoots run smoothly and professionally. As a professional understanding the basics of blogging gave me a heads up on how important it is to know designers, fabric types, labels, clothing styles and so much more. This makes one seem professional, trustworthy and most likely to be rehired with good quality work. Accomplishing this goal has helped me prepare for my future career by being creative, trustworthy, educated in my field and confident in my abilities to style.

Goal #2: Comprehend the basics of blogging and creating content to engage an audience.

During this semester, I was able to accomplish the goal of understanding the basics of blogging and creative content to engage an audience. Although we primarily focused on wardrobe styling for this internship, I was able to understand what goes into making a good that focuses on a target audience. As a blogger, I need to find my niche of what I’m going to be sharing on my blog, whether it be fashion, beauty or both. Then, I need to make sure I have a clean, professional and easy to navigate blog website in order to attract an audience. My photos and content need to be up-to-date and on trend for my specific niche in order to be successful and have a positive brand image for prospective brands and companies who would like to collaborate with me. Here, I understood the importance of having categories and hashtags prominent within my blog posts as well as SEO keywords to help bring viewers to view my blog. As a professional, I have developed by creating a professional and personal brand for myself that exudes a positive and easy to work with image in order to engage a larger target audience as well as potential brands or clients. Accomplishing this goal has prepared me for my future career to be well-rounded as a stylist and a blogger. Versatility and having the ability to multitask shows that I am professional, well-rounded and continuously practicing in my field of work.

Goal #3 & #4 : Demonstrate personal and professional networking. Use and evaluate styling and networking skills for appropriate professional networking.

Over the semester, I accomplished demonstrating personal and professional networking while on set at editorials, commercials and photoshoots. I introduced myself to everyone on set and explained that I am an intern who aspires to be a stylist. I handed out my business card and received many in return. I learned that the newest business card is following one another on Instagram, which is a social media platform for image sharing. Instagram is an easier way of connecting, especially with the direct message feature right on the website. The networking I engaged in here actually helped me accomplish a goal of creating content for an online website known as Blavity for their natural hair segment that will be available January 2016. Being able to network personally and professionally created more confidence in my abilities to share my work, ideas and ability to gain clientele although my portfolio is small. Accomplishing this goal has helped prepare me for my future career because I was personable and professional, which means I have the ability to gain clients and continuously build my portfolio. This way, I can move up within the industry and not get stuck at only one level since I am well-rounded with a blog.

Goal #5: Develop critical thinking and problem solving skills and apply them to styling.

With goal 5, I was able to use critical thinking and problem solving skills during a few styling events this semester. The most recent was during the NAACP Awards. Keena Ferguson, a client of Vic Styles, needed a gown for her award night. I pulled a few options from different style houses and the option that looked the best, did not fit the best. I went back to the showroom to pull different colors and smaller sizes (the dress ran big) of the garment, as well as evening clutches, jewelry and shoes that paired well with her dress, the event and the client. This event helped me develop as a professional by showing me that it’s okay to be flexible and quick on your toes when things go wrong last minute. I was glad that I was able to help find the perfect fit and color of the dress, and it just so happened that she won her category award that night as well. Accomplishing this goal will prepare me for my future career because when it comes to multitasking and being flexible and efficient with clients when it comes to big award shows or important events like the NAACP Awards.

Goal #6: Use creative skills to construct photoshoots, mood boards and creative directing.

I accomplished this goal this semester through Vic Styles by being given the task of styling her collaboration with Sucre Couture. I created mood boards and helped pick the jewelry that would be sold on the store website online. The hardest part was making sure that it represented both Vic Styles and Sucre Couture while also being fashion forward and friendly to the Sucre Couture clientele. I was able to rent a studio myself as well as pick the perfect photographer to create the mood for the photoshoot. This helped me develop as a professional by understanding the wants and needs of clients, especially those I am working for.For my future career path, this project made me realize my specific niche and how I’m good and giving creative direction and setting moods for photoshoots, commercials and editorials.

Goal #7: Gain the understanding of styling paperwork.

As a styling intern, I learned the importance of styling paperwork. When pulling or borrowing clothes from a stylehouse, show room or store, there is paperwork needed to make sure items are returned in a decent amount of time with no damaged or stolen goods. The paperwork is also a representation of yourself and how punctual and professional you can be when it comes to the importance of returning clothing used. If clothing was used, it has to be documented to style houses and showrooms or designers can receive the correct credit for their hard work as well as a promotion for other clients to see how great a specific brand is. I developed as a professional by making sure that my financial information, or that of clients was correct under the name of Vic Styles. When working under a brand, it is important you represent them to the best of your abilities. As for my future career, this made me financially aware of myself and the representation of who I am styling, just in case items go missing under my name or the name of my brand.

Goal #8: Demonstrate the ability to understand the wants and needs of clients.

I was able to demonstrate the understanding on the needs and wants of clients. With Keena Ferguson, our dress styles we pulled were too big, but luckily I was able to find the exact dress in an array of colors and in smaller sizes to compliment her big event. She wanted to be dressed simple, classic and elegant. With the dress choices I provided while pulling from Pistol & Stamen, I think I hit the nail on the head. She felt beautiful, confident and glowing as she accepted her NAACP Award at the 2016 show. The jewelry I chose also helped to accentuate her features and compliment her personal style, right down to the shoes. This helped me develop as a professional by being trustworthy for my clients so that they understand that I want to make them look and feel good even though they are paying me. Doing a job well done provides room for growth and more clients. This will prepare me for my future career because my attention to detail increases clientele loyalty.

Goal #9: Acquire the knowledge and skills needed to create engaging content.

I was able to acquire the knowledge and skill required for creating engaging content with blogging. Creating engaging content means finding your niche and sticking with it. You do not have to sell out on your information either, you can be as authentic as possible so that your followers and viewers can identify with you as a person and not just a person on the internet with a blog. I also felt it important to have nice, quality pictures to engage your audience as well as using the right hashtags to get your blog posts noticed and picked up by designers, brands and larger fashion companies. Overall, I feel that accomplishing this goal has helped me appreciate writing and sharing my personal life, style and beauty goals to help others feel and look the way that I do. This will help me in my professoinal career with networking and being a positive personal brand to collaborate with brands in the future.

Goal #10: Build a unique and original portfolio.

I was able to build a unique and original portfolio this semester under the watchful eye of Vic Styles. I worked with Copalivin’ Co., Sucre Couture and an actress/producer for the NAACP Awards 2016 (who did win in her category.)These experiences were unique and original because I created mood boards for each as well as picked attire, location and photographers for these events. With Copalivin’ Co., a street style brand, I hand picked models who fit the brand image as well as a photographer to capture it. For Sucre Couture, I collaborated with Vic on her own jewelry collection and even helped name a few of the items that were put on sale on the Sucre Couture page. With the NAACP Awards, our client, Keena Ferguson, was more than impressed with me that I was able to find the perfect gown for her big event, even though I am only an intern. Building a unique and original portfolio has helped me develop as a professional by giving me the opportunity to share my skills and abilities through images of what I have styled. Accomplishing this goal will help me as a professional by showcasing my work and abilities in order to gain clientele.
