Attaching the front panelAttach part a of the front panel to part b ofthe unit as illustrated and push the left sideinto position until it clicks.

Notes• Be sure not to attach the front panel upside

down.• Do not press the front panel too hard against the

unit when attaching it.• Do not press too hard or put excessive pressure

on the display window of the front panel.• Do not expose the front panel to direct sunlight

or heat sources such as hot air ducts, and do notleave it in a humid place. Never leave it on thedashboard of a car parked in direct sunlightwhere there may be a considerable rise intemperature.

Caution alarmIf you turn the ignition key switch to the OFFposition without removing the front panel, thecaution alarm will beep for a few seconds(only when the POWER SELECT switch on thebottom of the unit is set to the A position).If you connect an optional power amplifier anddo not use the built-in amplifier, the beepsound will be deactivated.

Getting Started

Resetting the unitBefore operating the unit for the first time orafter replacing the car battery, you must resetthe unit.Remove the front panel and press the resetbutton with a pointed object, such as aballpoint pen.

NotePressing the reset button will erase the clocksetting and some memorized functions.

Detaching the front panelYou can detach the front panel of this unit toprotect the unit from being stolen.

1 Press (OFF).

2 Press (RELEASE), then slide the frontpanel a little to the left, and pull it offtowards you.

Notes• Be sure not to drop the panel when detaching it

from the unit.• If you detach the panel while the unit is still

turned on, the power will turn off automaticallyto prevent the speakers from being damaged.

• When carrying the front panel with you, use thesupplied front panel case.

Setting the clockThe clock uses a 12-hour digital indication.

Example: To set the clock to 10:08

1 Press (SHIFT), then press (2) (SET UP)repeatedly until “CLOCK” appears.

Fast-winding the tape

During playback, push the SEEK/AMScontrol up or down and hold.

To start playback during fast-forwarding orrewinding, press (MODE) (*).

Locating a specific track— Automatic Music Sensor (AMS)

During playback, push the SEEK/AMScontrol up or down and release, for eachtrack you want to skip.You can skip up to nine tracks at one time.

NoteThe AMS function may not work when:— the blanks between tracks are shorter than

four seconds— there is noise between tracks— there are long sections of low volume or quiet

interludes.

Changing the display itemEach time you press (DSPL), the item changesas follows:

After you select the desired item, the displaywill automatically change to the MotionDisplay mode after a few seconds.In the Motion Display mode, all the aboveitems are scrolled in the display one by one inorder.

TipThe Motion Display mode can be turned off. (See“Changing the sound and display settings” onpage 12.)

Listening to a tape

Insert a cassette.Playback starts automatically.

If a cassette is already inserted, to startplayback, press (SOURCE) repeatedly until“FWD” or “REV” appears.

The side facing up is played.

Playing a tape in variousmodesYou can play the tape in various modes:•REP (Repeat Play) repeats the current track.•BL SKP (Blank Skip) skips blanks longer than

eight seconds.•ATA (Automatic Tuner Activation) turns on

the tuner automatically when fast-windingthe tape.

1 During playback, press (SHIFT).“SHIFT-ON” appears in the display.

2 Press (3) (PLAY MODE) repeatedly untilthe desired play mode appears.Each time you press (3) (PLAY MODE),the item changes as follows:REP n BL SKP n ATA

3 Press (4) (n) to select “ON.”

The selected play mode starts.

4 Press (SHIFT).

To return to normal playback mode, select“OFF” in step 3 above.

NoteIf the “SFT” indication appears, press (SHIFT) tocomplete the mode setting.

Radio

Memorizing stationsautomatically— Best Tuning Memory (BTM)

The unit selects the stations with the strongestsignals and memorizes them in the order oftheir frequencies. You can store up to 6 stationson each band (FM1, FM2, FM3, MW, SW1, andSW2).

CautionWhen tuning in stations while driving, useBest Tuning Memory to prevent accidents.

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select thetuner.Each time you press (SOURCE), the sourcechanges as follows:

Notes• The unit does not store stations with weak

signals. If only a few stations can be received,some number buttons will retain their formersetting.

• When a number is already indicated in thedisplay, the unit stores stations in order from theone currently displayed.

Memorizing only thedesired stationsYou can preset up to 18 FM stations (6 each forFM1, 2, and 3), up to 6 MW stations, and up to12 SW stations (6 each for SW1 and 2) in theorder of your choice.

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select thetuner.

2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.

3 Push the SEEK/AMS control up or downto tune in the station that you want tostore on the number button.

4 Press and hold the desired numberbutton ((1) to (6)) until “MEM” appears.The number button indication appears inthe display.

NoteIf you store a new station on a number buttonwhich already has a station registered, thepreviously stored station will be replaced by thenew station.

Receiving the memorizedstations

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select thetuner.

2 Press (MODE) repeatedly to select theband.

3 Press the number button ((1) to (6)) onwhich the desired station is stored.

TipPress either side of (PRESET/DISC) or (PRST) toreceive the stations in the order they are stored inthe memory (Preset Search function).

If you cannot tune in a presetstation

Push and release the SEEK/AMS controlup or down to search for the station(automatic tuning).Scanning stops when the unit receives astation. Push the SEEK/AMS control up ordown repeatedly until the desired station isreceived.

NoteIf the automatic tuning stops too frequently, press(SHIFT), then press (3) (PLAY MODE) repeatedlyuntil “LOCAL” (local seek mode) is displayed. Thenpress (4) (n) to select “LOCAL-ON.” Press (SHIFT).Only the stations with relatively strong signals willbe tuned in.

TipIf you know the frequency of the station you wantto listen to, push the SEEK/AMS control up ordown and hold until the desired frequencyappears (manual tuning).

If FM stereo reception is poor— Monaural Mode

1 During radio reception, press (SHIFT),then press (3) (PLAY MODE) repeatedlyuntil “MONO” appears.

2 Press (4) (n) repeatedly until “MONO-ON“ appears.The sound improves, but becomesmonaural (“ST” disappears).

3 Press (SHIFT).

To return to stereo mode, select “MONO-OFF”in step 2 above.

Using the rotarycommanderThe rotary commander works by pressingbuttons and/or rotating controls.

By rotating the control(the SEEK/AMS control)

Rotate the control and release it to:•Locate the beginnings of tracks on the

tape. Rotate and hold the controlmomentarily, then release it to fast-windthe tape. To start playback while fast-winding the tape, press (MODE).

•Locate a specific track on a disc. Rotateand hold the control until you locate thespecific point in a track, then release it tostart playback (XR-C5200 only).

•Tune in stations automatically. Rotate andhold the control to find a specific station.

By pushing in and rotating thecontrol (the PRESET/DISC control)

Push in and rotate the control to:•Receive the stations memorized on the

number buttons.•Change the disc (XR-C5200 only).

Other operations

Rotate the VOL control toadjust the volume.

Adjusting the soundcharacteristicsYou can adjust the bass, treble, balance, andfader.You can store the bass and treble levelsindependently for each source.

1 Select the item you want to adjust bypressing (SOUND) repeatedly.

2 Adjust the selected item by rotating thedial.Adjust within three seconds after selectingthe item. (After three seconds, the dialfunction reverts to volume control.)

Attenuating the sound

Press (ATT) on the optional rotarycommander.“ATT-ON” flashes momentarily.

To restore the previous volume level, press(ATT) again.

TipThe unit decreases the volume automatically whena telephone call comes in (Telephone ATTfunction).

Changing the operative directionThe operative direction of controls is factory-set as shown below.

If you need to mount the rotary commander onthe right hand side of the steering column, youcan reverse the operative direction.

Press (SOUND) for two seconds whilepushing the VOL control.

TipYou can also change the operative direction ofthese controls with the unit (page 12).

Press (DSPL) to change thedisplayed items.

Press (SOUND) toadjust the volumeand sound menu.

Changing the sound anddisplay settingsThe following items can be set:•CLOCK (page 5).•BEEP – to turn the beep sound on or off.•RM (Rotary Commander) – to change the

operative direction of the rotary commander.— Select “NORM” to use the rotary

commander in the factory-set position.— Select “REV” when you mount the rotary

commander on the right hand side of thesteering column.

•M.DSPL (Motion Display) – to turn themotion display on or off.

•A.SCRL (Auto Scroll)* (page 13).

Boosting the bass sound— D-bass

You can enjoy a clear and powerful basssound. The D-bass function boosts the lowfrequency signal with a sharper curve thanconventional bass boost.You can hear the bass line more clearly evenwhile the vocal volume remains the same. Youcan emphasize and adjust the bass soundeasily with the D-BASS control.

Adjusting the bass curve

Turn the D-BASS control to adjust thebass level (1, 2, or 3).“D-BASS” appears in the display.

To cancel, turn the control to OFF.

NoteIf the bass sound becomes distorted, adjust theD-BASS control or volume.

Playing a CD or MD

1 Press (SOURCE) repeatedly to select CDor MD.

2 Press (MODE) until the desired unitappears.CD/MD playback starts.

When a CD/MD unit is connected, all thetracks play from the beginning.

Changing the display itemEach time you press (DSPL) during CD or MDplayback, the item changes as follows:

Automatically scrolling a disc name— Auto ScrollIf the disc name or track name on an MDexceeds 8 characters and the Auto Scrollfunction is on, it automatically scrolls acrossthe display as follows:• The disc name appears when the disc has

changed (if the disc name is selected).• The track name appears when the track has

changed (if the track name is selected).

If you press (DSPL) to change the displayitem, the disc or track name of the MD isscrolled automatically whether you set thefunction on or off.

1 During playback, press (SHIFT).

2 Press (2) (SET UP) repeatedly until“A.SCRL” appears.

3 Press (4) (n) to select “A.SCRL-ON.”

4 Press (SHIFT).

To cancel Auto Scroll, select “A.SCRL-OFF” instep 3 above.

NoteFor some MDs with very many characters, thefollowing cases may happen:— Some of the characters are not displayed— Auto Scroll does not work.

TipTo manually scroll the long name of an MD afteractivating the Auto Scroll function, press (SHIFT),then (1) (N) (manual scroll).

Notes on CassettesCassette care• Do not touch the tape surface of a cassette, as

any dirt or dust will contaminate the heads.• Keep cassettes away from equipment with

built-in magnets such as speakers andamplifiers, as erasure or distortion on therecorded tape could occur.

• Do not expose cassettes to direct sunlight,extremely cold temperatures, or moisture.

• Slack in the tape may cause the tape to becaught in the machine. Before you insert thetape, use a pencil or a similar object to turnthe reel and take up any slack.

• Distorted cassettes and loose labels can causeproblems when inserting or ejecting tapes.Remove or replace loose labels.

• The sound may become distorted whileplaying the cassette. The cassette player headshould be cleaned after each 50 hours of use.

Cassettes longer than 90 minutesThe use of cassettes longer than 90 minutes isnot recommended except for long continuousplay. The tape used for these cassettes is verythin and tends to stretch easily. Frequentplaying and stopping of these tapes may causethem to become entangled in the cassette deckmechanism.

Precautions• If your car was parked in direct sunlight

resulting in a considerable rise intemperature inside the car, allow the unit tocool off before operating it.

• If no power is being supplied to the unit,check the connections first. If everything is inorder, check the fuse.

• If no sound comes from the speakers of atwo-speaker system, set the fader control tothe centre position.

• When a tape is played back for a long period,the cassette may become warm because ofthe built-in power amplifier. However, this isnot a sign of malfunction.

If you have any questions or problemsconcerning your unit that are not covered inthis manual, please consult your nearest Sonydealer.

To maintain high quality soundIf you have drink holders near your audioequipment, be careful not to splash juice orother soft drinks onto the car audio. Sugaryresidues on this unit or cassette tapes maycontaminate the playback heads, reduce thesound quality, or prevent sound reproductionaltogether.Cassette cleaning kits cannot remove sugarfrom the tape heads.

MaintenanceFuse ReplacementWhen replacing the fuse, be sure to use onematching the amperage rating stated on theoriginal fuse. If the fuse blows, check thepower connection and replace the fuse. If thefuse blows again after replacement, there maybe an internal malfunction. In such a case,consult your nearest Sony dealer.

WarningNever use a fuse with an amperage ratingexceeding the one supplied with the unit asthis could damage the unit.

Cleaning the ConnectorsThe unit may not function properly if theconnectors between the unit and the frontpanel are not clean. In order to prevent this,open the front panel by pressing (RELEASE),then detach it and clean the connectors with acotton swab dipped in alcohol. Do not applytoo much force. Otherwise, the connectors maybe damaged.

Notes• For safety, turn off the engine before cleaning

the connectors and remove the key from theignition switch.

• Never touch the connectors directly with yourfingers or with any metal device.

Problem

No sound.

The contents of the memoryhave been erased.

Refuerzo de los graves— D-bass

Es posible disfrutar de graves nítidos eintensos. La función D-bass refuerza la señalde baja frecuencia con una curva más marcadaque la del refuerzo de graves convencional.Es posible escuchar la línea de graves conmayor nitidez aunque el sonido vocal seencuentre al mismo volumen. Igualmente, esposible enfatizar y ajustar los gravesfácilmente con el control D-BASS. Este efectoes similar al obtenido cuando se utiliza unsistema opcional de altavoces potenciadores degraves.

Ajuste de la curva de graves

Gire el control D-BASS para ajustar elnivel de graves (1, 2, o 3).El visor muestra “D-BASS”.

Notas sobre los cassettesCuidados de los cassettes•No toque la superficie de la cinta del cassette,

ya que la suciedad o el polvo ensucian loscabezales.

•Mantenga los cassettes alejados de equiposprovistos de imanes incorporados, comoaltavoces y amplificadores, ya que el sonidode la cinta grabada podría borrarse odistorsionarse.

•No exponga los cassettes a la luz solardirecta, a temperaturas extremadamente fríasni a la humedad.

•La existencia de holguras en la cinta puedeprovocar que ésta se enrede en el mecanismo.Antes de insertarla, utilice un lápiz o unobjeto similar para girar la bobina y eliminarholguras.

•Los cassettes deformados y las etiquetas maladheridas pueden causar problemas alinsertar o expulsar las cintas. Retire o adhieracon firmeza las etiquetas.

•Es posible que el sonido se distorsionemientras se reproduce el cassette. El cabezaldel reproductor de cassettes debe limpiarsedespués de 50 horas de uso.

Cassettes de duración superior a 90 minutosNo se recomienda el uso de cassettes deduración superior a 90 minutos, salvo parareproducciones extensas y continuas. Lascintas utilizadas para estos cassettes son muyfinas y tienden a estirarse con facilidad. Lasoperaciones frecuentes de reproducción yparada de estas cintas pueden causar que seenreden en el mecanismo de la platina decassettes.

Precauciones•Si aparca el automóvil bajo la luz solar

directa y se produce un considerableaumento de temperatura en su interior, dejeque la unidad se enfríe antes de utilizarla.

•Si la unidad no recibe alimentación,compruebe las conexiones en primer lugar. Sitodo está en orden, examine el fusible.

•Si los altavoces no emiten sonido con unsistema de dos altavoces, ajuste el control deequilibrio en la posición central.

•Si reproduce la cinta durante mucho tiempo,el cassette puede calentarse debido alamplificador de potencia incorporado. Noobstante, esto es normal.

Limpieza de los conectoresEs posible que la unidad no funcionecorrectamente si los conectores de la unidad ydel panel frontal no están limpios. Para evitarque ocurra esto, abra el panel fontalpresionando (RELEASE) y, a continuación,extráigalo y limpie los conectores con unbastoncillo de algodón humedecido en alcohol.No aplique demasiada fuerza. De otro modo,podrían dañarse los conectores.

Guía de solución de problemasLa siguiente lista de comprobaciones resulta útil para solucionar los problemas que puedanproducirse al utilizar la unidad.Antes de consultar la lista que aparece a continuación, compruebe los procedimientos de conexióny funcionamiento.

Reproducción de cintas

Problema

El sonido de reproducción sedistorsiona.

AMS no funcionacorrectamente.

Causa/Solución

Contaminación del cabezal de cinta.n Limpie el cabezal con un cassette de limpieza de tipo seco

disponible en el mercado.

• Se produce ruido en el espacio entre temas.• Un espacio en blanco es demasiado corto (inferior a cuatro

segundos).• Ha desplazado el control SEEK/AMS hacia arriba

inmediatamente antes de los temas siguientes.• Ha desplazado el control SEEK/AMS hacia abajo

inmediatamente después del comienzo del tema.• Una pausa larga o una parte de bajas frecuencias, o un nivel

de sonido muy bajo se interpreta como un espacio en blanco.
