Dear Friends,

It’s Spring! All the beautiful flowers are here! They lift our spirits! But more than that, theyremind us of the Twelve Powers that we here at Unity by the Shore are focused on this year of2012 … with our emphasis on the Unity World-Wide Ministries 2012 theme “Discover the

Power Within You.” Yes, it is obvious in the Springtime that the “One Power” that is within us isthe same Power that is within all Life! You see it in the trees, pushing the leaves out—that “LifeForce” that is within you and me. It moves from the darkness into the Light. All of nature takeson this Life—the bulb grows and breaks up and expands. That same Power is urging us to grow

and to “show up” as the unique “flower” that we are. Consider the following few Powers and their oneness with Nature—All That Is!

“Power of Faith:” —Just as the bulb has “faith” that Spring will return,we, too, have the “knowing” that whatever seems to be “dark” in ourlives will pass and the “Light” will shine again in all its splendor.

“Power of Love:” —Like the Daffodil who “loves” to be the Daffodil,we, too, can love ourselves and others unconditionally.

“Power of Release:” —A Daffodil cannot be a Daffodil forever—it has to releaseso food can go into the root. You and I can free ourselves, let go of anythingthat is holding us down and keeping us from the freedom to be the God creation we are designed to be.

These are just a few of the Twelve Powers that we have already shared on Sundays. They have been Faith, Strength,Wisdom, Release, Understanding, Will, Life and Love. My message today is limited by space but can you “see” howthe 12 Powers are within each one of us, how we are “blooming”—and growing individually and as a SpiritualCommunity?

Let us, together, let our Light shine and release the “Imprisoned Splendor!”

May you have a glorious “Spring” experience!

Rev. Joanne

Message from the

President

Happy Spring Everyone! I hopeyou are all enjoying this beau-tiful season of growth and

rebirth. We have been a busy group. We have

had our 50/50 fundraiser. OurChildren's Church has grown and now

includes Uni-Teens, in addition to Uni-tots and Uni-Kids.Aren't they blessed to be brought up with Unity? They are ourfuture. Our Building and Grounds team braved a cold rainy Saturday

in March to beautify the grounds in time for Easter, and ourparking lot has an extra layer of gravel. We have a brand newwebsite, and our branding program is moving forward. Ournext capital improvement project—the bathroom renovationand flooring upgrade—is in the works, too.

We couldn't do all of these wonderful things without ourSacred Servants. They make our community thrive, and theyreally walk the talk. They embody our core values—all of them, not just Service. They are open to Spirit and step up to do whatSpirit calls them to do. Won't you join them as we move into the second half of 2012?

We have our Butterfly Release in August, and another dinner toplan as fundraisers. We need people to help with PublicRelations to get the word out about our wonderful communityand our activities. We need people to help with the sound min-istry and as ushers each Sunday, and we need folks to help withhospitality.

Our community is abundantly blessed with so much talentand love. I see our ministries flourish and grow, and I embraceyou all as perfect Sacred Servants.

“For The Bible Tells Me So”

FILM SYNOPSIS

The place of gay and lesbian congregation and clergy within variousChristian denominations has become an increasingly controversialissue in recent decades, and many conservative Christian leaders

have justified church policies which limit the participation of homosexualsin the church (as well as support of legislation against gay marriage or civilrights for gays) by citing certain passages of the Holy Bible. But what dothese passages really mean? How accurate is their translation from theoriginal holy texts? And have they been used outside of proper context tojustify a political agenda that runs counter to Christian ideals of accep-tance and forgiveness? FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO is a documen-tary which looks at the ongoing battle of gays and lesbians to celebratetheir faith without denying their sexual preference.

Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very Americanfamilies—including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardtand Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson—we discover how insightful people offaith handle the realization of having a gay child. Informed by such respectedvoices as Bishop Desmond Tutu, Harvard's Peter Gomes, Orthodox RabbiSteve Greenberg and Reverend Jimmy Creech, FOR THE BIBLE TELLS MESO offers healing, clarity and understanding to anyone caught in thecrosshairs of scripture and sexual identity.

Vet Finds Unity’s

Freedom His Real

Need

By Flo Higgins

Charles Boyer loves Unity because it offers freedom ofthought, and he also loves the fact there is no religiousdogma. During a recent interview Charles, who is a vet-

eran of the Army and Air Force, said Unity has filled a deep per-sonal need its philosophy.Unity became a real part of his life he joined the church in

2001. “Unity is the first church I ever joined, and my father wasa Methodist minister,” Charles said with a smile. Charles has awonderful sense of humor and is loyal to his religion. Charles found Unity by the Shore and loved the philosophy,

and the Truth as taught by Rev. B.J. Stannard and Rev. JoanneMurphy.

Charles has served on the Board of Trustees and teaches aclass based on the teachings of Joel Goldsmith each Thursdaynight at the church. He is quick to say Joel Goldsmith and Charles Fillmore, the

co-founder of Unity, are teachers he really admires.Charles has recently taken on teaching Sunday School on the

third Sunday of each month. “My granddaughter loves comingto what she calls ‘gramps’s Sunday School,” he says with a laugh. Charles is fast to point out that it was his wife, the late Barbara

Boyer, who first introduced him to Unity. Soon he met HerbPierson who was the leader of the church in 2001 when thechurch was between ministers. “We became good friends. Hewas my first Unity teacher. It was Herb who urged me to join thechurch. They needed a Treasurer, and I was it. That was in 2001and I have been involved here since.” Charles served on theBoard and as Church Treasurer from 2001 to 2007. Charles has lived in Jackson since 1971. He has been mar-

ried three times, all his wives are deceased. He has two chil-dren, five step-children, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He served in the Army and was in Berlin when the BerlinWall went up. After he left the Army he joined the Air Force. Hewas a Technical Sergeant in both branches of the service. He has a degree in finance from Seton Hall University and a

degree in languages from the University of Maryland. He is flu-ent in German which served him well during his stay in Berlin. He developed a warm relationship with the late Ed Wolverton,

who was a long-time member of Unity by the Shore and who hadalso served in Berlin during the war. “We had great conversationsabout our time in Germany. He was a great Unity friend,” Charlesnoted.

Charles now has a financial planning business, whichincludes buying and selling real estate and preparation of taxeswith offices in Asbury Park, Plainfield and Jackson.

Remembering and Thanking

Website Volunteers - Past and

Future

Congratulations to our new Website Masters Lisa andOrsini Sanchez. We now have a brand new updated web-site, and that is wonderful. I would like to acknowledge

the volunteers who worked in the past to shape our very firstwebsite and maintain it.

Our introduction into the fascinating world of the internetwas in 2002. Barbara Brengel, the wife of the then BoardPresident Bill Brengel, was the inspiration and the first webmas-ter. Back then we won prizes for our website from the UnityAssociation.

Then Barbara and Bill left Unity by the Shore and moved toFlorida, and Barbara remained webmaster for a time while inFlorida. Then I took over the webmaster job.

About five years ago the website was redesigned by churchmembers Lilian Marshall and Robert Sumski,

I want to thank the many people who helped me keep thewebsite in tip-top order until April 8, 2012, when it was turnedover to the new website team.

I am grateful for the support I received from the past BoardPresident, James McKenzie, the help of Barbara Ely, Rev. JoanneMurphy, Denise Gregory, Debbie O’Brien and the many churchmembers who sent information, along with my son Tom, who isa genius on the computer.

It has been a stimulating experience for me and forced me outof my comfort zone into a totally new computer world. And Iwant to thank Lilian Marshall for her inspiration and push to getme there.

God bless Lisa and Orsini Sanchez, our new Website Masters,as they take on the responsibilities of the new site.

Flo Higgins, former Webmaster 2004-2012.

Why We Need Butterflies and Bees in Our Garden

Three quarters of all flowering plants—and more than one-third of food crops—depend on honey bees, butterflies andother pollinators for fertilization. Yet in just the past few years, the population of honeybees, wild bee, butterflies and somepollination bird species have declined. Possible causes forthis decline are parasites, diseases and the use of pesticides. But one major cause is loss of habitat—the plants that polli-nators use for food, mating, and nesting. How to plant for pollinators: Choose different native plantsthat bloom at different times from Spring to late Fall. To learnmore about native plants in your region, visit the website ofthe Pollinator-Partnership: www.pollinator.org.Plant in Groups: Grow plants close together to provide over-lapping canopies of different heights. This pattern is inviting topollinators and gives them protection from predators.Plant for Larvae: Butterflies need more than flowers and nec-tars to survive. They also need plants for their larvae to feedon. A few plant species, such as Black-eyed Susan andMilkweed, provide both.Avoid Pesticides: Even natural pesticides can be deadly tobees. Also, wiping out insects starves the birds that feed onthem. Plant diversity is a better solution to the pest problemthan pesticides. For environmentally friendly information: Call 732-922-2935.
