Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 1:

Your first task this week is to hire some zookeepers to work for you at your zoo.

We are going to write a job advert for a zookeeper.

Below you can see pictures of some of the things a zookeeper does when they are at work. You can use these ideas in your writing.

clean

prepare food

feed

You should all try to write your advert in sentences.

Most of you should include adjectives (describing words). These could describe the animals or the zookeeper.

Some examples are: kind, caring, helpful, hardworking, fun, strong, playful, furry, friendly

Some of you may also be able to use adverbs. These add information about how or when they should do something.

Some examples are: carefully, firstly, daily, helpfully, quietly, cheerfully, caringly, eagerly, in the morning

Use the structure on the next page to help you. You may want to create a similar one in your book.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 2

Zoos usually charge guests to go in to their zoo. In this task, you need to think about how much you would charge the visitors at your zoo. Make a page in your book for ticket prices. All the prices at your zoo must be pounds not pence e.g. £4, £6.

Easiest: Choose numbers less than £10.

Middle: Choose numbers less than £20.

Difficult: Choose numbers less than £50. (This may go over £100 later when adding.)

Watch the guidance on Seesaw to help you and then take a photograph of your ticket prices when you have finished.

Prices

Student:

Adult (must be more than the student price):

Child (must be less than the student price):

Adult (60 years+) (must be less than student price but more than child’s price):

Group prices (adding your chosen prices)

How much will it cost 1 adult and 1 child to visit the zoo?

How much will it cost for 2 children and 1 adult to visit the zoo?

How much will it cost for 1 adult, 1 adult (60 years+) and 1 student?

Extension – money

What coins/notes could the customer use to pay exactly for the above prices? They can use the same type of coin or note more than once.

Bramley Church of England Primary Task 3:

This week your tasks are all about zoos. To help with this, we have put links to zoo webcams and videos so you can see what different zoos, enclosures and animals are like. We do not expect you to visit all of the websites or to watch all the videos.

When you are watching, please think about:

What the animal is and what they are like. What the animals do. The spaces they need in their enclosure. The objects and surroundings they have e.g. things to swing on. Is it the same for all

animals? Why?

https://www.chesterzoo.org/virtual-zoo-2/

This link to Chester Zoo has live, virtual zoo days at certain points in the day however you can also watch some pre-recorded videos too.

https://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/virtual-london-zoo

London Zoo has videos of keeper talks. These can help you to find out about certain animals.

https://www.marwell.org.uk/zoo/keep-in-touch/webcams?rmsrc=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7-P1BRA2EiwAXoPWA9UQCQAfSNsZZDjKOPVlp-z6trhoCfIANI_V6gEytQEUhwtZ9KLnyhoCMowQAvD_BwE

Marwell Zoo has webcams in some of their animal enclosures. As they are live, you may have to patient if you choose to watch these. However, they are good for looking at the enclosures and what the animals do when people are not around.

https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/live-cams

San Diego Zoo has a wide range of live web cams. Due to the time difference, when it is their night time, they show the footage of the previous day.

https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals

San Diego Zoo also have a children’s site with videos about the animals they have there.

Below are examples of signs from different animal enclosures at a zoo, what information/features is included and are they all the same?

Using the features you found in the below examples, create your own sign for an animal at your zoo (there is a features toolbox below to use if needed) which you can research to find out more information.

Watch Seesaw to help write your sign and then take a photograph of yours to upload when you have finished.

Task 5:

Today’s maths task is to solve the following problem to get a giraffe to your zoo in the quickest amount of time.

Twizzle, a female giraffe, needs transporting to your as the zoo where she lives has been flooded.

It is important to plan Twizzle's journey very carefully. She must be healthy and calm when she arrives at her new home.

The lorry will need to travel quite slowly, so a short route must be chosen.

The lorry will be very tall to carry Twizzle, so the route must avoid low bridges.

Bendy roads must also be avoided in case Twizzle topples over.

8

What features could I include in my zoo sign? The animals name How long the animal lives (lifespan) How much the animal weighs/ its length or height A short paragraph giving more information about the animal (what it looks

like, where it lives etc.) What the animal likes to eat (its prey) A picture of the animal The information is presented like a fact file

Bramley Church of England PrimaryBelow is a map of three possible routes:

Task 6:

Design your own map/ plan for your zoo. Plans and maps of zoos are useful as they tell visitors to the zoo where each animal enclosure is, where to find places to eat and drink, where the toilets are and where the gift shop is.

Below are some examples of zoo maps which you could use to help design your own map/plan.

When designing your own zoo map/plan, think about:

- What animals would you like at your zoo and how big will each enclosure need to be?- Will any of the animals need specific habitats (e.g. lots of trees in the bird enclosure)?- Where can visitors buy food and drink?- Where the toilets will be (will you just have one or more than one toilet)?

9

Each black space on the routes represents 5 minutes of travelling time. If you find counting in 5 difficult, change this to 10 minutes or 1 minute.

Which route is the fastest journey?

Which route is the longest journey?

How long does the fastest journey take?

Bramley Church of England Primary Task 9: Create a soundscape of enclosures at your zoo.

You could do this with other members of your family. Try to make a recording of your soundscape and put it on Seesaw.

In the animal enclosures there are many sounds created by the animals, the things they are doing and their surroundings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N1zUp9aPFG4 (zoo animals noises)

This is a safari soundscape https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ceHQCmorbBE (safari sounds)

Listen carefully and you will hear how there is often more than one sound happening at the same time. Some of these sounds are louder, some are quieter, some are faster and others slower.

Watch these links to help you with ideas for your own zoo soundscape. Think about the noise the trees would make as they sway in the wind, the sound of the animals’ footsteps, the birds or insects in the background and the sounds of the different animals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NjG34Vysszo (chimpanzes and backgrounds sounds)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy-tPpdVdh0 (jungle sounds)

Can you create a soundscape, which shows the sounds of your chosen enclosure? Begin by choosing an animal enclosure at your zoo.

You could think about:

What would be happening in the enclosure and so what sounds would you hear. What sounds would be louder or quieter. Which sounds would be at the same time or be one after the other. How you can create these sounds using your body, voice or objects. Please make sure you

ask your parents before using items from around the house. You could even make an instrument like a rainmaker to demonstrate the noise of a

waterfall.

When you have created your own soundscape for a zoo enclosure you could add it on to Seesaw for your teacher to listen to. You could also write what you have included in your soundscape.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 10: How to look after animals. Can you write a guide for the new zookeepers and visitors to the zoo about how to look after a zoo animal?

Here is an example of how to look after a pet dog.

You need to make sure you look after animals properly. Here are some ways you can help!

Dogs need a healthy and balanced diet. Your dog needs healthy food twice a day! Your dog needs a lot of exercise, you need to take it for walks. Walks keep your dog happy and healthy. Keep them on a lead in busy areas and near roads. Only let your dog off in big grassy spaces where it is safe. You can even play games to keep

your dog interested! But make sure the toys won’t damage their teeth or have small parts which can be swallowed!

To keep your dog healthy, make sure you visit the vet for checkups. They need to check that your dog is not poorly.

When it’s bedtime, make sure your dog has a cosy bed to get a peaceful night’s sleep ready for the next day’s adventures!

You can use the San Diego Zoo website to select an animal and find out more about it. This will help you to write your own care guide, for how to look after a zoo animal. https://kids.sandiegozoo.org/animals

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 12:

Can you design an enclosure for an animal? It may be easier to design an enclosure for the same animal that you wrote about for Task 4 or Task 10.

You will need to find out what type of habitat your animal lives in, to help you decide what to include in their enclosure. Remember to think about your animals’ food, water and things to keep it entertained/happy. Don’t forget that their needs to be a way for your zoo visitors to see the animal too.

You can draw your design or you could make it using materials that you have at home. See the examples below.

When you have finished, upload a picture of your enclosure to Seesaw.

Bramley Church of England PrimaryTask 13:

Can you write a diary entry in role?

You can choose who you are writing in role as. If you have been to a zoo before, you could write a diary entry about a day out at the zoo. You could also use your knowledge about zoo keepers to write one pretending you are a zoo keeper who has been to work for the day. If you want a challenge, you could pretend to be one of the animals in the zoo and think about what they would write in their diary at the end of a day.

Things to think about when you are a writing a diary entry:

Things to include:

Start with Dear Diary,

Write in the first person. This means using ‘I’Today I had such a busy day!

Write in the past tense. This means write as if it has already happened.Today I fed the monkeys. It was such a busy day. What you did today, in the right order. When I first got to work I went straight to the monkey enclosure. How you felt about the different parts of your day. When I was cleaning out the Rhinos, I was so tired because it is such hard work!CHALLENGE!Which punctuation could you include? . ? , ! ‘

Have a look at our example below to help you:

Bramley Church of England PrimaryDear Diary.

What a busy day I’ve had! There were so many visitors at the zoo today. I started work at 8am and went straight to the monkey enclosure. I was on feeding duties today which I love because the monkeys are so friendly. I made sure they all had a yummy breakfast. They were very cheeky! Then I hopped in the jeep and went straight to the elephants. I love the elephants but today it was my turn to clean them out which is not a nice job. They are very smelly. I did it as quickly as I could as it is one of my least favourite jobs. The zoo was really busy. It was a lovely sunny day so lots of people were visiting with their families. My last job before lunch was to check in on the giraffes. I was so excited about this because I had heard we had new baby giraffes overnight. I snuck in quietly and saw a beautiful, baby giraffe. It was a little girl. I was in love! My boss let me name her so I decided to call her Grace. I was so happy and I got to help feed her too. It was such a busy but wonderful day. I love my job and I love baby Grace!

Task 14:

24 legs. How many animals?

I can see 24 legs in an enclosure at the zoo. The enclosure has a mixture of chicken and pigs. How many of each animal might there be?

(There are 5 possible answers for this, I’ve given you one below, can you find the other 4?)

Tips

Before you start, think how many legs does a chicken have? How many legs does a pig have? These are the only two numbers you need to work with.

You might work it out by drawing 24 little legs and then drawing bodies above the right amount of legs to see how many chickens and pigs there might be.

You might get 24 items from home to represent the legs and group them to make chicken and pigs. Then write down how many of each animal you have.

Here is one way I solved it:

I got 24 counters and grouped them to make chicken and pigs.

Challenge:

In a different enclosure I see 24 legs, but there are only 3 creatures. Which creature might live in that enclosure? (It is 3 of the same creature)

Can you make up a leg problem of your own for someone at home to solve?

Franz Marc was a famous German painter who lived from 1880-1916. He enjoyed painting animals on bright and colourful backgrounds. He often painted the animals in unusual colours too.

We would like you to create your own Franz Marc inspired artwork. Choose an animal and make sure you have a bright and colourful background. Remember your animal doesn’t have to be its usual colours. You could use colouring pencils, felt tips, pastels, paint or even collage, whatever you have at home! There is a Franz Marc colouring page below if you find it hard to create your own!
