At a regular meeting held last Tuesday inMacKenzie Hal!, the Sanibel City Councilvoted to approve three specific amendmentsto the city's comprehensive land use plan«CLUP). two of them requested by MarinerProperties President Robert Taylor.

In his first hearing of the morning, Taylorwas granted a variance from the CLUP'sminimum height elevation (flood proofing)and density requirements to permit theconstruction of the final 8 units at theMariner Pointe Condominiums on CausewayRoad.

Although the council has in the pastconsistently required developers to abide bythe 13.5 foot minimum- height elevationsrequired under the plan they chose last weekto allow Mariner to build at an elevation of10.5 feet above mean sea level because of thetransitional nature of the Mariner Pointedevelopment, which was begun prior to thecity's incorporation in 1974.

The variance was imperative, explainedTaylor, in order for the new units to main-tain the character of the completed portionsof the project, which were built at anelevation of H.5 feet under permits issued byLee - yunty. He did, however, ultimately

' "agree lo a compromise elevation of 10.5 feet.After careful deliberation, the council

voted 4 to 1 to overturn the city planningcommission's recommendation of denial forthe proposal, with Councilman CharlesLeBuff casting the dissenting vote.

Upon completion, the final 8 units atMariner Pointe will bring the project as awhole up to 105 units on approximately 13acres of land.

Shortly thereafter, Taylor was granted asecond amendment, enabling him to buildtwo duplexes on a Gulf-front lot at the cornerof Guif Drive and Seagrape Lane.

Because of a technicality, a waiver fromthe front yard setback requirements con-tained in the CLUP was needed to permit theproposed work.

In asking for only four units on the site.Taylor proposed to build at a lower densitythan that which was allocated to him in theplan. Although the plan allotted him sixmulti-family type units for the propertywithout requiring the setback variance.Taylor said he would prefer to build only thetwo duplexes in hopes of preserving the

single-family detached nature of the neigh-borhood.

Despite opposition to the proposalregistered by a number of homeowners inthe area, the council voted unamimously toapprove the requested amendment,although City Manager Bill Nungester in-formed the group that no developmentpermit would be issued for the work untilsuch time as Mariner replaces an amount ofnative vegetation which they had unlawfullyremoved in order to run water lines to thesite last week.

Due to what Mayor Porter Goss called a••unfortunate misunderstanding," Marinerhad cleared an area of sea oats, gumbolimbo, cabbage palms, and one large but-lonwood tree without obtaining a vegetationclearance oermit from the cilv.

In a letter to Nungesier. Taylor had ad-vised him that Mariner was planning to"clear and trim some Casuarina" at the siteunless advised otherwise, and thus took thecity manager's silence on the request to be atacit approval of the work. The removal ofCasuarina in the city, an undesirable exotic,requires no special permit under the plan.

As Taylor apologized for the oversight andpromised to restore the vegetation, thematter was dropped by the council, who onlyinstructed Nungester not to issue a permittor the constructoin of the duplexes until heis satisfied that the damage has beenrepaired.

Earlier in the session, the councilnarrowly approved a specific amendmentinvolving a waiver of the CLUP's front yardsetback provisions to permit F'ue;*t L. Sabinto construct a single-family home in theKearn's Subdivision at the corner of GulfDrive and Hurricane Lane. '

According to the petitioner's represen-tation. Bill Edwards, the variance wasneeded because of the •peculiar shape of theluf.'V • ''. .

The amendment passed by a very slimmargin, with two of the councilen voicing

. strong opposition to the request."The problem is that these people are

trying- to;put too big a house on too small alot," argued Councilman Duane White, "it'snot our fault the lot is too small."

The motion to approve the petition passed:; to 2; with Couneilmcii White and Zee Butleropposing the amendment.

ficials of the Island Water Association(IWA.) exchanged harsh words lastTuesday before the Sanibel CityCouncil as the plans for the IWA'sproposed 2 million gallon storage tankfacility were once again brought up forconsideration.

The storage tank proposal has had along turbulent history of post-ponements dating back to the dayswhen Sanibel was still a speck ofunincorporated Lee County, and lastTuesday's discussion before the citycouncil was no exception to that long-standing controversy.

Originally, the proposed tank was tobe built on a site off of Dixie BeachBoulevard until a concerted outcryfrom residents in the area forced the

"TWA to seek another location for themassive storage facility.

In an attempt to situate the allegedunsightly tank in a non-residentialarea, the IWA next purchased alowland site off Wulfert Road at theIsland's west end and requested cityapproval of the relocation proposal inmid 1975.

The city planning commission held ahearing on the request on July 14, 1975,and recommended unanimously thatthe city approve the proposal, whilecommending the IWA on their foresightin recognizing the need to expand theirfacilities to keep pace with the Island'srapid growth trends.

The matter came to a hearing beforethe city council on August 5 of thatyear; but no action was taken pendingthe completion of the city's com-prehensive land use plan (CLUP). Itwas at this meeting that CouncilmanCharles LeBuff noted the "uniquevegetation" in the area of the proposedsite and asked the city's VegetationCommittee to conduct a vegetativesurvey of the property.

The council heard the proposal againon November 18 of last year and againdeferred action to await the adoption ofa plan for the city. It was at about that

time, according to IWA GeneralManager Larry Snell, that the cityplanners promised to designate theproposed site as a "special use" in dieCLUP.

Finally, on January 20, 1976, thecouncil voted unanimously to upholdthe planning commission's recom-mendation of approval for theproposal, while emphasizing that theIWA should consult the VegetationCommittee and then apply for a citybuilding permit before initiatingconstruction of the facility. At thatmeeting, IWA Attorney JohnSchumacher informed the council thatconstruction was not contemplated forat least two years from that date.

For a time, everyone seemed happywith the outcome and little was heardof the matter until just recently, whenthe long-awaited vegetation inspectionwas finally conducted by Vegetation

Committee Chairman George Camp-bell.

The results of his study, he said,indicated that .much valuable nativevegetation would be destroyed by theconstruction of the proposed storagetank on the site, including manymangroves, some buttonwood and afair amount of the rare and sensitiveJoe-wood (Jacqumiakeyensis). amongothers. Campbell further concludedthat the site was unfit for the proposedtank because the amont of vegetationto be cleared in the undertaking(roughly 46 per cent) is far in excess ofthe 20 per cent clearance permitted inIsland lowland areas pursuant to theCLUP.

According to Snell, the proposedstorage tank is to be 110 feet indiameter and is to rise 20 feet aboveground, although the city's approval ofthe proposal called for the tank to be

screened from view by landscapingand a serpentine access road.

Thus, Snell and IWA President JimRobson approached the council lastTuesday to request that they be per-mitted to proceed with construction ofthe tank. Citing a 22 per cent averageyearly increase in water consumptionon the Island as the necessity formoving quickly toward the con-struction of the facility. Robson told thecouncil that the IWA would need thenew tank by next year if it were to meetthe peak tourist season demand forwater in the city.

Snell added that the IWA had hopedto begin hauling the necessary fill tothe site before the heavy Christmastraffic set in, but that they wanted toclear the land within the week in orderto take soil borings and accordinglyrequested that the city issue them a

(Also, somehow oranother the department wasthe recipient of a brand newtypewriter ribbon, whichreally doesn't have much todo with fighti/ig crime, butcertainly makes typing thisreport a lot easier!)

Various and sundryalarms whent off a total ofnine times, one of themthree times in the sameplace, and the rest scattered,here and there. Four "darkhouse" checks were in-tensified, although all-proved negative, the am-

bulance was called uponthree times, the SPD ren-dered assistance of one sortor another six times, and asail boat and a purse werereported found.

Mbpeds (those cute littlemotorized bicycles) werereported being in the wrongplace. They were, andperson who rents them wasasked to tell customers tokeep, them off privateproperty. Ren tor said hewould so advise.

Mopeds reported in wrongplace again — this time, onbike path. GOA (Gone OnArrival).

reportsComplainant came in that

two juveniles were firing agun into a pond. Turned outto be playing with plasticreplicas of guns. No shotsfired.

Complainant came inabout "improperly" parkedcar. Car moved by timeofficer arrived on scene.

Complainant stated thatnude bathers were not onlynaked, but were acting in anobscene manner. They wereand were duly arrested.

Call came in askingassistance since caller's doghad been hit by a car. Whenofficer arrived, complainant

was burying dog, and said itwas the dog's fault, as it hadrun in front of a car.

A cottage occupied by avisiting couple was thescene of an early morningB&E, when assailant en-tered same by means oftearing a hole in the screendoor and turning the doorhandle. Occupantsawakened, which effectivelystopped the "B" part of theB&E.

A fire extinguisher And itsbracket were removed fromthe wall of a rental property.

Dogs reported runningaround loose. They were,but not in front of officer.

Locked and parked carwas broken into, with theresult that a briefcase(which didn't containanything of real value) wasmissing.

Those dogs were reportedloose again. Officer locatedthem, at apparent place ofresidence. Since dogs werein emaciated condition, anote, along with some dogfood, was left for owner.

A dog owner reported thatsomeone had mysteriouslyremoved a collar and chokechain, and owner was in fearthat someone would reportdog as running around loose.

Call came in that a houseon Captiva had been"stripped — including therefrigerator." It had been.Investigation continuing.

A charge of assault waschanged to B& E betweenearst-while friends. After alot of investigation and quitea bit of conversation, $40involved ended up in rightfulowner's possession.

Sanibel Police Department isrequesting any man or woman, livingon Sanibel or Captiva, over the age of18 years of age who would be interestedin joining the Sanibel Auxiliary Policeto see the Department for an ap-plication.

The required 86 hours of training forAuxiliary Police Officers will be held at

City Hall from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.beginning December 6, and will end thelatter part of January, 1977.

Auxiliary Police candidates arerequired to have a high school diploma,copy of their birth certificate, militaryservice record (where applicable) andhave a medical examination andsuccessfully pass a job-relatedphysical fitness test administered bytheYMCA.

"Our one and only ob-jective is to produce anunbiased report on thissubject for" the CivicAssociation will not attemptto persuade island thinkingeither for or against aproposed merger.

"All registered voters onCaptiva will receive a copyof the report and. of course,all members of theAssociation who voteelsewhere will receive acopy,

the end of February, theCivic Association plans toconduct two separatereferendums to ascertainIsland sentiment regardingthe proposed merger. Onereferendum will be conducted among Captiva's

The Friday program willbe geared to a "'magazineformat," according toproduction supervisor DonWhitehead. and will includesuch features as local news,an Island activities calen-dar, current fishing andweather reports, and in-terviews with Islanders,among others.

"We would like to beginbroadcasting beforeChristmas." Whitehead toldthe ISLANDER lastweek, "although our plansare still largely tentative."

A new broadcasting firmis currently being formed tomanage the Islandtelevision station, to befinanced by more than adozen Island residents. Thefirm is expected to retainthe Island Reporter tosupervise production, withWhitehead to be in charge ofprogramming and FredValtin to handle the businessand advertising aspects ofthe venture.

The long-awaited final decision in thePointe Santo Development Corporation'ssuit against the City of Sanibel was at lastreceived in City Hall last week, bearing, ashad been anticipated, bleak tidings for thecity fathers.

in his final court order on the case. CircuitJudge Wallace-Pack decreed that the city

"is enjoined from interfering with theconstruction of the project, under the con-ditions of the original Lee County Buildingpermits."

His ruling, therefore, reaffirms thedecision which was handed down in theSundial Condominium case by declaring theso-called "hip pocket" permits issued for theIsland by the Lee County Building Depar-tment before the city's incorporation to bevalid -indefinitely.

Attorneys involved in preparing the op-position to Atlanta developer RobertTroutnum's massive Estuaries projectproposed for (he shores of Estero Bay beganselecting witnesses last week to appearbefore a Cabinet-appointed hearingexaminer at a public hearing slated to beginon January 17. in Fort ftlyers.

The Lee County Board of Commissionersand the Southwest Florida Regional Plan-ning Council are in the forefront of the many

"groups oppusing Trouiman's appeal forslate approval of his 25.000 unit developmentproposal, which has twice been denied by thecounty coin mission.

Among those selected to testify last weekwere Islander Peter Larson, who has beenretained by the Southwest Florida RegionalPlanning Council to photograph Ihe largelywetland site of the proposed development,and city traffic consultant Robert W.I kibenelte of San Francisco.

Koughly twenty witnesses were chosen bythe attorneys last week, among .them,scientists, professors, planners and officialsof both slate and local governmentalagencies, with witnesses from the privatesector to be paid for their services.

Housing advisorycommittee formed

The Sanibel City Council last weekauthorized the formation of an ad hocHousing Advisory Committee to. study theproblem of insufficient low and middle in-come housing in the city.

The council is expected to announce theirappointments to the committee at theirmeeting today in City Hall, with the mem-bership to include Vice Mayor Zee Butler, amember of the city planning commission,and one city official, among others.

Negotiations proceeding /•'The Sanibel City Council last week voted

unanimously to approve an "agreement inprinciple" with Latham CorporationPresident Robert L. Johnson to permit theconstruction of the final 66 units in his King'sCrown Condominium project on West GulfDrive.

With both Johnson and the council's en-dorsement, the negotiated settlement needsonly to successfully navigate the amend-ment-hearing route outlined in the city'scomprehensive land use plan before workcan be resumed on the halted Gulfsidedevelopment.

According to Sanibel Vice-Mayor ZeeButler, who headed up the city team whichbandied the negotiations, the "agreement inprinciple" passed by the council last week"would constitute a tacit approval of anamendment to theplan."

The matter must be heard by both thecouncil and the city planning commissionunder the amendment procedures.

The apparent success of the King's Crownand recent Sundial negotiations hasprompted similar requests for settlementsout of court from other Island developerscaught in a difficult transitional situationwith the young city. At their meeting lastweek, the council decided to lend a willingear to similar petitions for relief from thedevelopers of the-Gumbo Limbo subdivisionand from Shell Harbor Inn owner Daveiloltzman.

The council appointed Vice-Mayor Butler.Councilman Duane White. Planning Com-missioner George Tenney. the city attorneyand the city manager to handle the Gumboi.iivigo talks, while Councilmen FrancisBailey and Charles LeBuff were appointedto head up a city team to negotiate the ShellHarbor Inn dispute.

Both developments are in litigation at thepresent time. .

So often we hear of the redtape and bureaucracygenerated by governmentagencies and how it can takedays, weeks and months tohave a simple problemresolved. Regrettably, thisoften is a true and un-fortunate situation. Few-people, however, are awareof the usually legitimatereasons behind the red tape,and few people are aware ofthe times the variousgovernments and .agencypersonnel react quickly tosolve a problem.

We have recently ex-perienced one of these oc-casions here in Lee County,where not just one, butseveral. governmentagencies worked togetherfor quick reaction to asituation—a situation whichcould have taken months toeven approach.

The problem was theclosing of Big Hickory Passoff Bonita Beach. Althoughthe creation of a sand barblocking the pass does not,a t first glimpse, seem to be acrisis, the ramifications ofthis particular silting actionwere far reaching.

Big Hickory Pass not onlyprovides access to the Gulffor Bonita fishermen, butalso provides tidal flushing

action which keeps the backbay area environmentallyhealthy. Without the Pass,the natural resources of thebay are threatened and thedecline of water quaLitythrough stagnation couldpresent a serious com-munity problem.

The problem was beingwatched closely by the headof our local Department ofEnvironmental RegulationIDERJ office. PhilEdwards. and DEREnvironmental Biologist.Kevin Erwin.

An emergency meeting inTallahassee called by thatoffice brought 13representatives from theGovernor, the StateDepartments of Environ-mental Regulation, Tran-sportation, NaturalResources and theLegislature. In a matter ofhours, this group approved aplan for cutting a temporarypass through the sand bar,conducting a study todetermine what causes thesilting action so a per-manent solution might bereached, and received acommitment for thenecessary State en-vironmental permits. Butthere was no equipmentavailable to do the job.

Another government thenbecame involved. The Lee

County Commission, withindays, approved the use of ajCounty dragline andoperator to clear the pass,and the Court Attorneyworked with the owner of theproperty which had beenextended by the sand bar toget his approval, which wasobtained quickly.

While this was happening,our local DER staff wasworking with a Federalagency, the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers, to relaythe urgency of the situationso necessary Corps approvalmight be given withoutusual waiting periods. Whenthe Corps put their permit inthe mail, work was begunand an opening was cut.

All this was achieved in,about one week, and a fevweeks later a meeting at theUniversity of FloridaCoastal EngineeringLaboratory in Gainesvilleproduced the specifics of thestudy to be conducted,through the cooperation ofthat staff and DER.

Although each of the manypeople and agencies in-volved are to be com-mended, special recognitionfor initiating, coordinatingand expeditious handling ofthe problem goes to PhilEdwards and Kevin Erwin,who are still working on apermanent solution to theBig Hickory Pass closing.

Heavy trucks stoppedA concerted outcry from Captiva residents

last week put an abrupt halt to a convoy ofheavy trucks hauling rock material fromCape Coral to the site of the Captiva ErosionPrevention District's terminal groin in-stallation at Redf ish Pass.

The Erosion Prevention District'sproposal for two rock groins to be installedby the South Seas Plantation developers atthe Island's northern end was the subject ofa public hearing before the U.S. Army Corpsof Engineers this past June. The con-troversial groins, which comprise only one

phase of a three-phase plan evolved by theDistrict to curtail the rapid erosion ofCaptiva's beaches, was subsequently jp-proved by the Corps, as well as by theDepartment of Environmental Regulation.

Last .Monday, dumptrucks owned byFoster .Marine Construction of West PalmBeach, general contractor for the project,began transporting the riprap rock materialfor the groins from a Cape Cora! excavationsite to Capita, where they began stockpilingthe material in the vicinity of Timmy'sNook.

Shortly thereafter, telephones startedringing in the offices of the ErosionPrevention District as Captivans called in tocomplain about the heavy truck traffic onIsland roadj and she rapid accumulation ofrock by 'The Nook."

The District's consulting engineer for theproject, Dex Bender of Duane Hail and.Associates, was soon caiied in and byWednesday the tracks were halted. As theapproved plans for the groin constructioncaiied for the riprap to be barged in from themainland rather than hauled by trucks.

Bender worked ous an arrangement withFoster Marine for the rock to be hauled toPunta Rassa and stockpiled, and from thereto be brought to Redfish Pass by barge asneeded.

According to Bender, the 400 foot-longterminal groin to be installed in the Pass willrequire 2.800 tons of rock, while the smallergroin to be placed on the east side of theIsland near the mouth of the channel intoSouth Seas Marina will require 740 tons ofriprap to be barged in.

The gamut of subjectmatter of the books rangesfrom fiction, mysteries andwesterns to biography, iscience and art. with a fair "sprinkling of children'sbooks.

According to Mrs.Leonard, the prices willrange from "free to $10 percopy." Some of the booksare from the Libraryshelves but most have beendonated by Island residents.Additional books are stillwanted and if these aredelivered to the Library,each copy will be reviewedby the selection committeeto determine if it should beplaced in circulation or putinto the sale, Mrs. Leonardstates. The Librarystoreroom is overflowingwith books and the excessare now being stored atBank of the Islands.

Applications for par-ticipation in the fair are stillbeing received by Co-chairman Mary Ronk, whostates that more than thirtyIsland crafts people havesigned on at this time. Theart exhibit and sale is beinghandled by the Sanibel-Captiva Art Association.Helene Sparkes and PhyllisMount say that arepresentative exhibit isassured.

Lee County Sheriffs Department agentssuccessfully closed out a month of in-vestigation and surveillance last Saturday

morning when narcotics officials interceptedwhat Sheriff Frank Wanicka called thelargest drug shipment ever to be siezed inSouthwest Florida.

Working closely with U.S. Customs of-ficials and the U.S. Coast Guard. Wanicka'sagents weathered a night-long vigil and amoonlit chase on the waters of the Gulf of.Mexico to bring an estimated 5 tons of theillicit, weed, marijuana, to justice.

, A well-executed raid made about 6.5 milesp.of: of Knapp's Point in the Gulf, early

Saturday mornina. netted lawmen sevenaccused smugglers, four boats, and almost200 sixty-pound bales of pot. destined for saleelsewhere in the United States. Wanickatheorized last weekend.

County narcotics agents had kept theprospective smugglers under survelliancefor some time prior to last weekend's arrestsafter a Fort Myers Beach resident tipped theDepartment off to the group. The band, itseems, had rented a seclusive canal home onthe Beach for an exhorbitant fee andremained largely hidden till the eveninghours, when they would venture out in a 35-foot deep sea fishing boat to make dry runsof their projective operation, according toWanicka.

The boat, called "The Calypso." wass seized last Saturday as it made its moonlightI rendezvous in the Gulf with a 65-foot Texas-

The four men aboard the Calypso who wereapprehended during the moonlit loadingoperation last Saturday were identified asThomas Lee Montgomery. 26. and TommyPinckard. :'M. of Miami. Gene Murrell Tyner.Jr.. 2B. of Xorth St. Petersburg, and Mar-shall Foster. 30. of Pittsburgh. Pa.

Three additional men seized with theshrimp boat were identified as RobertMarshall Parr. 32. James Edward Parr. 35.and Larry Wayne Cressell. 29. of Newport.Rhode Island. '

All of the men were charged Saturday withsmuggling and possession of marijuana andare currently being held in the Lee CountyJail on bond of $750.00(1 each. The bond wasset Saturday by judge James Thompson.

It was a time of jubilation for Wanicka andhis men last Saturday morning as thecontraband was unloaded from the boats tobe weighed at the Coast Guard Station onFort Myers Beach.

Armed narcotics agents who unloaded theweed onto the dock were literally ankle-deepin pot. due. no doubt, to spillage from thealmost 150 plastic-bound bales which wereweighed Saturday morning. Agents foundnumerous other bales floating in the Gulflater in the day. presumably from thescuttling of another boat used in theoperation.

Most of the pot, which was estimated atjust under S'i million in market value, willeventually be burned by Sheriffs officials,said Wanicka last weekend.

The Sheriff also claimed that another suchsmuggling bust would be forthcoming in theweeks ahead because ol a similar sur-veillance operation currently being con-ducted by the department.

As of the Islander deadline last weekend,the origin and destination of the marijuanawere still matters of speculation among thenarcotics agents involved in the case.

Saying that the IWA had alreadyborrowed approximately $78?,QOQ forthe project and could not be reim-bursed by the FHA until the project iscompleted. Sneli also requested ablanket approval of the proposedconstruction on the basis of thecouncil's prior consent. He furthercharged that the city was being run bythe Vegetation Committee and askedthe council to disregard the com-mittee's recommendation of denial.

Campbell argued against theproposed location for the tank andpointed out that the valuable Joe-woodin the area would not survive tran-splanting, as Robson had offered toattempt.

"You can't drink Joe-wood and makeice cubes out of it," Snell retorted.

The council as a whole seemedevenly divided on the issue lastTuesday, although they informed theIWA representatives that under nocircumstances would they allow theconstruction to proceed without thegroup making application for adevelopment permit under theprocedures outlined in the plan.

"It's a dilemma," said CouncilmanDuane White, "but the law is the law."White further urged the IWA to applyimmediately for a specific amendmentto the CLUP's provisions governing

vegetation clearance.

Councilman Francis Bailey, on theother hand, seemed to favor grantingthe variance. "I'm afraid I'd have to letthem build it,'! he said. "After all,we've committed ourselves "

Councilman diaries LeBuff went onrecord as being opposed to the project,even though he claimed to have beenthe one who originally suggested thatthe IWA consider the site. Noting thatJoe-wood had been considered forinclusion in the Fish and WildlifeService's endangered species list, heconcluded, "I can't in good consciencesee that rare plant destroyed."

Following an extended round ofbickering between Campbell, Robsqf Band Snell which was only quelled by ti.6mayor's gavel, the three finally agreedto undertake an experimental piloteffort in transplanting one of the Joe-wood plants from the site after Camp-bell admitted to having seen one-successful transplant of the species.

In the meantime, it was decided that,the IWA would apply for a specificamendment to the CLUP's provisionsgoverning vegetation clearance inhopes of avoiding further delay.

It was unknown at Tuesday's/meeting whether or not addition?*,permits from the Department of En-vironmental Regulation and the ArmyCorps of Engineers would be requiredfor the water tank proposal.

The air was indeed foggy last Mondaynight (and cold, too!) as the redoubtable Is-lander art critic ventured as far asSarasota to see the Ringling Museum of ArtClassic Film Festival showing of RomanPolanski's gruesome movie adaptation ofthe popular Shakespeare. tragedy,•'MacBeth."

Released in the early 1970's, Polanski's"MacBeth" was billed as its director's at-tempt to revenge himself upon the violentand decadent society, which had producedCharles Manson, the man who was convictedfor the brutal cult-murder of Polanski'spregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate.

Fora man intentupon artistic revengeof a

bizarre ritualistic murder, there is probablyno drama in the English language bettersuitod to his purpose than "MacBeth." From,the play's second scene until the final cur-tain, the stage of "Macbeth" is literallyinundated with blood, to which the tragedy'slamed.wjtch coven provides the perfectliterary analogy to the strange legendssurrounding Manson's own satanic"family." '

11 was perhaps these apparent similaritiesbetween the theme of the play and what isknown of the motives of Sharon Tate'skillers that so inspired Polanski's in-terpretation of "MacBeth," for the film Ihad the pleasure of seeing last week rankedamong the best adaptations of Shakespeareit has been mine to know.

Produced under the aegis of PlayboyMagazine, the film suffers little from thedubious artistic talents of Hugh Hefner, andit may have been the skin magnate's one and

only contribution to the production thatennabled Polanski to go the Bard one betterby portraying Lady MacBeth not asShakespeare's ambitious harridan whoseshrewish contumely shames Mac Beth intocommitting murder, but rather as the youngactress Francesca Ann whose beautyseduces her master to murder and madness.

It was most likely at Hefner's insistencethat Lady MacBeth's well-known sleep-walking scene in Avt V was performed in thenude, and it is precisely this sort of ex-perimentation with her character that lendsand added degree of credibility toMacBeth's initial fall from grace.

Polanski even dared to stage MacBeth'sfateful visit to the witches' sabbath in Act IVas a nude scene. As his witches are far fromattractive, the scene is extraordinarilygrotesque, although well in keeping with themacabre tone of the play.

Coupled with Polanski's gorey em-

bellishments to the numerous murders in thestory, his shocking rendering of the covenscene enables the film to achieve the fullhorrifying effect of Shakespeare's dramaticexploration of the evil side of man's nature.

In this, Polanski owes much to his specialeffects technician Ted Samuels for his vividand realistic depictions of the production'smany scenes of bloodshed over and abovethose envisioned by the playwrite. Given thelimitations of the Elizabethan theater,however, Shakespeare is not to be blamedfor directing his murders to be committedoffstage.

Despite his many omissions from theoriginal text of the play, Polanski's"MacBeth" is sure to become one of the all-time classic productions of the Bard's mof>sanguine tragedy, if one can believe 'intrepid ISLANDER art critic--always amatter of some uncertainty!
