Foreword
The Japan Foundation assembled a panel of leading art historians and
art critics for an international symposium titled "Count 10 Before You
Say Asia-Asian Art After Postmodernism "on November 22nd and
23rd, 2008.
Around 20 years have passed since rhe esrablishment of a global art scene
made it possible for the contemporary art of Asia to attract attention
internationally. That development was of course greatly assisted by
concurrent economic growth in the region and also advancements in
information technology, which made global communication a reality. The
theoretical frameworks were those of postmodernism-of multiculmralism
and postcolonialism . Meanwhile, both Asia 's art scenes and its art itself
underwent a rapid transformation as the forces of the local and the global
came into direct contact. While globalization is undeniably pushing
culmre in the direction of standardization, it is surely the case that there
are greater exchange and network-building among artists, art historians,
curators and art critics from throughout the Asian region, and a growing
and shared awareness on the importance of re-consideration, re
theorization, and accumulation of knowledge on contemporary art in Asia
from a regional context.
Since 1990, the Japan Foundation has endeavored ro stay abreast of and
introduce through various programs the latest developments on the ground
in the rapidly changing art scenes of Asia. You could say that the art
programs of the Japan Foundation have developed in tandem with the art
of the region. In the face of even g reater potential for fumre transformation,
chis symposium, the sixth held co dare, attempted co examine the Asian arr
and the various discourses behind it over the lase 20 years and co engage in
theorizing it in the age of post-posrmodernism .
We are very pleased co report that over 200 people attended the
symposium, and in each of its three sessions held over two da,,s' a highly
constructive exchange of opinions rook place, based on wide-ranging and
derailed research. This rime many of the participants were young and
enthusiastic, enabling us co build a bridge between the developments of
the last two decades and the thoughts of the next generation .
This report, which documents the content of the symposium, includes the
many opinions, issues and ideas chat emerged in the course of the rwo days'
discussions. Ir is our hope that they prove useful in furure considerations of
Asian artistic exchange.
To conclude, we must note that Hayashi Michio and Maeda Kyoji
devoted much of their time co this symposium, from the planning stages
co its realization. The 13 panelists were also kind enough co prepare their
presentations in advance and make revisions during the production of
chis report. We would like to express our sincere thanks co everyone
involved, including chose who came and attended during the two days of
discussions, for helping co make chis symposium possible.
