Why Snapshots Are Useful for Backup

Faster backups without taking applications off-line

– Minimal impact to application performance

 Faster recovery time (RTO)

Easier to realize more recovery points (RPO)

 Minimal downtime for applications

What types of snapshots are there?

– Split-mirror

– Copy on Write

– Redirect on Write

– Others...

Volume Shadow Copy Service - A service that coordinates various components to create consistent shadow copies of one or more volumes.

Requestor - An application that requests that volume shadow copy be taken. A backup application is an example

Writer – A component of an application that stores persistent information on one or more volumes that participate in shadow copy synchronization. Typically this is a database application like SQL Server, Exchange Server, or a system service like Active Directory

Provider – A component that creates and maintains the shadow copies. Examples are the system provider included with the operating system and the hardware providers included with storage Arrays.

Source Volume – The volume that contains the data to be shadow copied.

Storage/Target Volume – The volume that holds the shadow copy storage files for the system copy-on-write software provider.

Key Functionality – Item Level Restore for MS-Exchange

Operate on single or multiple user mailboxes

Select which backup to restore based on: – User name and date/time specification

Perform recovery of the following mailbox items: – Inbox, deleted items, drafts, junk e-mail, outbox, sent items, journal,

calendar, contacts, notes, tasks, user folders

Limit the scope of items to be restored based on th e following filters:

– Sender name, subject text, attachment name, folder name, messagedelivery date and time range, message body, all content (searches subject text, message body, and attachment names)

Supports multiple restore destinations– Original location into original mailbox on original Exchange Server

– Alternate mailbox and folder

– Outlook data (.PST) file
