Escher (founded in 1925) is a process-technology services provider

a knowledge company which offers added value to the operating

companies projects and technologies in the form of services including

the delivery of process packages and flare systems. Escher became a

wholly-owned Iv-Oil & Gas subsidiary in December 2007.

In 2007 Shell awarded Escher

the contract for the design,

engineering, manufacture and

delivery of a LP flare tip, inclu-

sive of a H2S Burner for main-

tenance shutdowns of the

Bukom refinery’s flare system.

The original Escher retractable

flare system had been com-

missioned back in 1971.

Three Dutch companies were

involved in the project: the

main design and engineering

work was carried out at

Escher’s offices in Schiedam,

the pilot burners were supplied

by Smitsvonk in Zoetermeer,

and the FIB workshops in

Leeuwarden completed the

engineering, manufacture and

assembly.

Following an inspection of the

delivery schedule the flare tip

arrived in the Port of

Singapore within 100 days of

the order – 17 days ahead of

schedule. Consequently the

flare tip arrived well in time for

replacement during the plant

shutdown.

Escher perceives these projects

as examples of the provision

of services to the top oil & gas

operating companies, develo-

ping state-of-art process

technology, and acquiring

experience in the completion

projects in an effective and

efficient manner.

The end users were extremely

satisfied with the collaboration

and with the completion of the

project by Escher and its

partners, and the prospects for

future projects look promising.

At the end of 2007 QP awarded

Escher the contract for the

design, engineering, manufac-

ture, testing and delivery of a

complex two-stage HP/LP flare

tip assembly for its 40-m guy

wired flare system. Escher

supplied the original system

as an element of the Dukhan

Alliance project in 1997.

Escher made use of the

experience acquired with the

syste lessonslearn and tech-

nological developments in dra-

wing up a design complying

with the new requirements.

Smitsvonk supplied the pilot

burners, which use the original

ignition system, and supervised

the on-site electrical installation

of the flare tip to guarantee

easy installation of the flare.

FIB was subcontracted to

manufacture the complicated

stainless-steel flare tip.

QP contracted Velosi to carry

out an independent inspection

of the work which monitored

the progress and quality.

The fast track schedule speci-

fied a lead time of 18 weeks

from the award of the contract

to the shipment to Qatar,

inclusive of the procurement,

testing and inspection.
