Page 1 FJKF President’s Report Just a short message this month. Whilst there are lots of activities going on in the club at present, all seems to be under control (touch wood!) with the exception of the competition nights. We are now well into the competition for the year and the images are really fantastic, however, the only thing that's putting a damper on the night is the number of images we have for the judge. There are many camera clubs that would LOVE to have this problem! At the recent Management Committee meeting, discussions were held on possible solutions to this issue. Our decisions have been based on the results of the Members' Questionnaire from 2006 and from suggestions passed to members of the committee. Options included: Having an additional competition night (Not adopted, members questionnaire significantly against this). Moving the digital and slides to (say) the workshop night (Not adopted, workshop night is a vital part of the clubs education and training theme). Starting the competition night earlier (Not adopted at this stage, members questionnaire indicated 7:30 was the preferred starting time but 7:45 adopted as a compromise). Reducing the maximum number of images permitted (Adopted. This is a definite strategy that will reduce the length of the night). Moving the digital competition to an on-line comp (Not adopted). Allowing increased numbers in each of the categories (Adopted. Members may distribute their images how they please within the comp categories). Simon will detail the changes that have been made to the competition in his report later in this newsletter on page 14. In other news, recently we held our first "Getting to know your camera" day for the year. What a great success it was! Thanks to Keith Gillard and the other tutors for giving their time to help on the day. Thanks to the new members who also helped with the BBQ. The one sure way to be "accepted" into any club is to offer to help out with the running of the club. This is how you get to know the other members and they get to know you. Don't sit at the back of the hall; come forward when help is needed. Congratulations to all who entered and were awarded prizes in the Castle Hill Show and the Taralga Rodeo competition. Well done! A suggestion from Bob Flegg has been discussed and adopted. Want to show off some images? Want comment on some images? Want to show others what you've been up to? Well, at each meeting night (except competition nights) we will have some display stands and lights put up for you. The idea is that this will form a focal point for discussions and general chat before, at coffee time and after the meetings. No restrictions on what you bring. Speaking of tea and coffee , please remember that its $2 per cup of tea or coffee. Over the last 12 months the difference between what the RSL club charges us and what is in the box on meeting nights is around $800. That is we have lost around $800 over the year . If this continues, then tea and coffee will be available only from the Courtyard Coffee Shop on the ground floor. Anyhow, enough from me. Centennial Park with the Cumberland Bird Observers Club. Bird Photography at Centennial Park. Sunday 29th April 2007 9.30am Meet at the kiosk next to the Shelter Pavilion on Parks Road between Randwick Pond and Duck Pond, Centennial Park, Sydney. Leader: Nevil Lazarus Ph: 9437 3427 (Bird Observers Club) Bring morning tea, lunch and a chair. Binoculars are a must if you want to see the birds close up. This is a CBD parkland so normal clothing is fine. This location was chosen for the water birds, which are easier to photograph and much more accessible. HCC will join with the Cumberland Bird Observers' Club at Centennial Park with the main emphasis on the outing is on bird photography. They have some experts in this field attending. This could be of mutual benefit to both our clubs. You may learn something about birds and we may teach them something about photography. All are welcome, including your family.

My Camera

“ My camera is the window to my very sole. Through it I see nature’s wonderful colours, textur es and formations, a mixture of such beauty, it takes my b reath away. Even in destruction, I see the wonder of survival’s almighty strength and I am reduced to total insignificance. My eyes secrete tears of happiness from the overwhe lming warmth and joy of new life in all its absolute perfection. Photography is my passion, my images are me ” .

A PHOTOGRAPHIC OPPORTUNITY: Ironfest Revolution

April 28th & 29th 2007 Lithgow Showground

This year is the 6 th Annual Lithgow Ironfest – a wonderful opportunity for photographers.

An arts festival with a metal edge, Ironfest is an annual high profile regional cultural heritage event that celebrates working and playing with metal, and combines art with history, engineering and technology. Ironfest comprises of art exhibitions, stalls, live musical acts, street performance, historical re-enactment, educational and historical exhibits, technological displays, art making workshops, blacksmithing demonstrations and competitions, busking competitions, automotive exhibitions, machinery exhibitions, circus acts and competitions, video exhibitions, youth and multicultural events.

The blacksmithing demonstrations & competitions, the coin smelting demonstrations as well as the knife-making workshops, conducted by Alex Schribener, a blacksmith from Rylstone, have been particularly popular events at Ironfest. Ironfest attracted a great detail of international attention in 2006 with the involvement of Jousters from New Zealand participating in the St George’s Day Australasian World Jousting Tournament. In 2007, this looks set to continue, with Jousters coming from the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom to participate in the second annual St George’s Day Australasian World Jousting Tournament, to be held over two days.

Other participants set to come from the United Kingdom in 2007 will include at least 7 members of the British historical re-enactment group, the 71st Highland Light Infantry, who will be participating in the annual colonial battle re-enactment, The Battle of Lithgow. Have a look at the Web Site at http://www.ironfest.com.au/ Some of the Photos taken by William Stewart at last year’s Ironfest are featured on this page.

Architecture & Aerial Photography - an Interview with Tony Halley

by Andrew Treloar

Our guest speaker for the night of 3 April is Tony Halley and he will be discussing Architectural Photography. Tony trained as an Electrical Engineer at Adelaide University and has successfully combined his career as a practising engineer with his passion for photography. Tony’s photographic career started in Adelaide in the 1960’s where he trained in under Darian Smith in Industrial and Aerial photography using large-format 5x7” and 5x4” equipment, for example Arca Swiss and Sinar 5x7” cameras. The size of these negatives allowed Tony to produce enormous B&W and Colour prints up to 40x60” in size. Today, Tony uses digital cameras (a Canon 5D and Sony R-1) and specialises in taking panoramas of industrial projects (interiors etc.) that he stitches together on his computer using Realviz Stitcher. He has an Epson 7800 24” printer and regularly produces prints up to 6’ (2 metres) wide on canvas, terylene and paper. Tony has travelled extensively overseas and sold many photographs of old Abbeys/churches and architecture from the UK, Europe, the Middle East and China. He has taught Photographic Composition and B&W Printing Techniques at Tech in Adelaide (the precursor to TAFE) and is keen to pass his knowledge on to club members. When did you first get interested in photography? W as it a personal hobby, a career of choice or both? My father was a Patrol Officer in PNG in the 30’s and carted a Thornton Pickard quarter-plate around the jungle taking heaps of photographs (I’m still scanning glass plates!). He encouraged me to enter photography and was my earliest critic of my B&W work with an old 35mm Kodak camera. I later met Darian Smith who was one of a select group of Industrial Photographers in the 60’s and he greatly influenced my style – my passion for large format and composition. What led to your start in large format aerial photo graphy? At the time of meeting Darian Smith he was just about the only aerial photographer in SA of any repute. He was using converted F-24 5¼ roll film and gave me my first of a total 4 cameras of this type. The original planar lenses were replaced with 8 - 11” Zeiss or Rhodenstock lenses. What sort of photographic work would you undertake on large- scale engineering projects? Was photography your only role? Because my base discipline is Engineering and I consult to a wide customer base in Australia, China and Thailand – much of my photography is a direct flow-on from this avenue. As well as process and design engineering - I consult in ISO9001-and ISO14001 processes and HACCP certification. What are the special challenges involved in aerial photography and architectural photography? With Architectural work, since I no longer have the advantage of rising back and falling front and perspective correction (of the large-format cameras), I now have to do all this post-processing with add-in programmes such as Image Align Pro because it is not always possible to correct in-camera. With aerial work, the major challenge is the weather and obtaining Air Traffic Control clearance for the places I want to fly. A ceiling limit of 1500ft means that to photograph a particular building I am often using the 70-200mm f2.8 IS lens on the Canon at over 150mm. What types of clients require architectural and aer ial photography? With the advent of Google Earth, many people thought it would see the demise of aerial photography until they see a print of a low angle oblique at 24x36” size …!! Surprisingly, most engineering and Project Development companies want good aerial photography for record purposes. Quality equipment provides the edge over the guy with the $100 point and shoot!!! Realty and Urban development people just want it for peanuts (or for free!) and I don’t deal with them at all.

Page 10

FJKF

You now use a modern DSLR. Do you see this as a natural progression in photographic technique and style? Do you still get the longing to load up a large format film camera? I gave away the entire large format kit (for nothing!!) because it was too expensive to run – a sheet of 5x7” B&W was $4 before processing – colour about 2-3 times that. The Canon DSLR with good quality L glass provides great results and the add-ins to Photoshop just make it easier – the basic creative juices are still required however!! Have any particular photographers had a marked influence on developing your individual style? Darian Smith, Wolfgang Sievers and Max Dupain were the leading lights in the type of photography that I developed into. They were active in the 30's to 60's with Max and Wolfgang being in the Eastern states but I believe they did make the trek and meet up with Darian more than a few times. What do you choose to photograph for your own personal enjoyment? Australian history – old buildings and technical situations, like the original stearable arrays of the Radio telescope at Fleurs before they were all bulldozed … the engineer never disappears!!

FJKF ARRRHHHHH… What!!! I have to use FILM?

By Ree Ericksen

Having recently started a four year long part time adventure with the hopes of ending up with a diploma in Photography I was flattened by the fact that the ‘Powers that be’ had decided to change the course outline/synopsis and spend the 1st semester using FILM!!! A lot of you will be thinking “hey what’s the problem?” The problem is I am a pure digital girl, you could almost say a film virgin (as one of my fellow class mates has renamed me). I even tried to get out of using film by stating I didn’t have a film SLR nor did I know anyone (wink wink) that I could borrow one from, thinking that would be that, my teacher smiled and handed one of the schools cameras that I could use, damn! So off I went to buy black and white film for my practical class. A few days later, the start of my first practical class, film in hand, school camera handed over to me, with instructions of “do not press any buttons till I get over to you” (anyone that knows me knows you can’t put anything with buttons on it in front of me without buttons being pushed!). So the teacher starts telling the class the assignment ahead, I am ‘kind of’ listening, while trying to push the tongue of the film into the bit that it looks like its suppose to go into. A few minutes later all I have successfully done is bent and pulled out more film which could have been used to take a photo with. After deciding that my camera must be broken (see it wasn’t me it’s the camera), I then started to look for the ‘on’ button! This was to be my next film experience. Who thought up having two ‘on’ buttons? It took me a full five minutes of pressing EVERYTHING on this camera to finally (and by pure chance) hit the correct buttons. While I had been madly pressing and pushing buttons I had accidentally closed the back door of the camera where the film was still sitting waiting in its slightly bent shape for someone who knew what they were doing. Not knowing that by pressing the ‘right combination’ of two buttons the film will automatically load into the camera. Of course this startled me abit by the sudden whirling noise, and the fact that my then ‘broken’ camera was ‘doing something’ which is great news I finally worked out how to turn the camera on AND put the film in (right?). Well there is normally slightly bad news directly after good news, and my bad news is when I am startled in this fashion I generally jump and make some form of a sound (like a scream), I was trying to catch the camera after initially letting it go in fright, next thing ALL eyes are on me. I wave and give a sheepish smile then quickly blame it on the camera (again), I even tried the excuse that it was a Canon and I was a Nikon girl. So my first dealings with 1. a film camera and 2. a Canon camera will be forever remembered by both myself and unfortunately my whole class! This is nothing on the next lesson where I had go into the darkroom to then develop the negative and then process a print the old fashioned way, but that’s another story……. To be continued…….

How and why did you start in photography?

I liked pictures and couldn’t draw very well and I found that I could achieve what I wanted from photography.

Do you remember your first camera?

? A plastic toy camera from an Easter Showbag, I was probably about 8-9 at the time. My first SLR was an Olympus OM1 when I was 21.

Do you use film/digital or both?

I have both. Having bought a digital camera I have hardly used my film camera since. What type of photography do you find the hardest to take?

Casual portraits.

What photos do you like to take the best?

Just about everything else. Where ever I am I enjoy just trying to achieve an image that I really like, whether it’s landscape, architecture or nature. It’s the thrill of the chase to get that great image. Whose photos in the Camera Club do you admire the most?

I admire quite a number. Jonno’s landscapes, Nikolai’s moody black and whites and Keith & Charlie’s generally.

What are your thoughts on today’s Judges?

This is a hard one as I have done the program in the past and know the difficulties. I think there are some great judges but unfortunately there are some who have not kept up to date with current thinking and technology and sometimes this lack is all too obvious.

What advice would you give to a new beginner in photography?

Learn at least the basics of how to operate your camera, especially in terms of taking it off automatic and taking control of the artistry of your images. Take lots of pictures of a large variety of subjects and look at lots of other peoples images. Last but not least, take the photos for yourself, only use photographic rules when they suit you, the greats are often known because they broke the rules.

Do you follow any sport or team or have a hobby?

Photography and tennis What has been your favourite holiday and travels?

I think my major backpacking overseas holiday. When you experience the sights and sounds of completely different cultures, the first impact is such an eye opener. Name one thing we don’t know about you?

I was in amateur theatre/musicals for quite a number of years both on stage and designing the costumes.

Where do you see the Camera Club heading?

While we remain friendly and happy to help each other the sky’s the limit.

Any Comments:

I would like to thank all those who have helped build the club up to what it is today.

COMPETITION CO-ORDINATOR’S REPORT March saw another competition with large numbers of entries. Congratulations to all those who won awards especially those who won awards for the first time. As Bob mentioned we are aware that the length of the competition nights is an issue. For this reason we are in the process of making some changes to endeavour to reduce the competition nights to reasonable time. The changes we are implementing are as follows: Image of the Month As you will be aware we are now asking judges to award two images of the month. A printed image of the month, and also a projected image of the month. Mini Prints Due to the low number of “A” grade mini prints being entered, from the April competition, there will now be a single non graded mini-print category. Members that have been awarded points so far this year will retain those points. Maximum number of Entries From the May competition, the number of entries each person can enter on a competition night will be reduced to four images rather than the current six. The four images can be entered in any category. You can enter all four in one category, or spread them across up to four categories. We hope we have reached a balance of having judges comment on a number of images for each member, while making every effort to finish at a reasonable time. Thanks to Richard Hewitt for entering the competition entries into the club database, also to all those behind the scenes who keep the competitions running. The next competition set subject is: Our next competition is 24th April, set subject is People/Portrait - A photograph of a person or persons that may range from a head study to full body length. This section includes candid photographs and formal portraits. Uploading for the Digital images should be done by 11th April or sooner. We look forward to seeing more of those impressive images.
