This was very well received by visitors and RSL Club members and also the RSL Club staff. Many flattering comments were passed on to committee members and several membership inquiries were received. Several members sold photos and the overall objective of raising our profile within the RSL Club was achieved. Again, many thanks must go to the competition committee and the small band of willing helpers who were responsible (see the article and photos later in this newsletter). Secondly, the Federation of Camera Clubs annual Inter-Club competition has just been conducted. Our results were mixed but, given the emphasis that we placed on the RSL Club exhibition, I think we still ended up with a satisfactory result. The aim of the competition is to enable clubs (and their members) from all over NSW to be able to compare their work with others and to see what judges appreciate. The Death of Film???? No Truth in the Rumour

At a recent meeting of the Camera Club, one of our visiting judges (or was it a speaker) repeated the statement that “Film is dead - it will soon be a thing of the past”. It’s a statement that we hear from time to time, especially from some avid digital photographers. However nothing could be further from the truth at this stage. Yes! Digital is a growing and developing field. Yes! We are seeing fewer and fewer slides in competitions. However slide film and one presumes print film will live on for some time to come. They will live on side by side with digital and many photographers will use both film and digital means of capturing the image. They will live on, because both Fuji and Kodak have no plans at this stage to cease producing them. A recent email from Fuji said: “There is no press release on the future of Slide Film, there is no plans to discontinue this product at this stage.” Also a recent email from Kodak supplied me with a 2004 Press Release as well as a question and answer sheet on the future of film. Some of the statements made in one or both of these documents are:

1. I keep hearing Kodak is getting out of the film business. Is that true or not? If not, why do the rumors persist?

Kodak is NOT getting out of the film business and we have stated that repeatedly and emphatically. Film is an integral part of our business and will continue to be for many years to come. In fact, we are introducing a number of new films for the professional photographer, advanced amateur and consumer at the PMA trade show Feb 12. The fact that we talked about making investments and advancements in the digital side of the business may be misinterpreted by some as focusing only on digital and not on film. But that is not the case.

2. Dear Customer:

Because you are a valued partner, I am writing to explain the facts behind the announcements Kodak made today, January 22. I want to avoid any potential misunderstanding about Kodak’s commitment to traditional film photography as we experienced after a similar meeting last September.

Kodak remains committed to film, At the upcoming Photographic Marketing Association meeting in Las Vegas next month, we will introduce four exciting new consumer films and one-time-use cameras and four new films and papers for professional photographers and professional labs.

So – when you hear people claim that film is dead or dying – assure them, that such is not the case. Film will live on for the foreseeable future.

Long live both Digital and Film – they both have a place in our beloved photography.

Members’ Questionnaire Very soon members will be asked to complete a "tick-the-box" type questionnaire. This survey of members' opinions is very important to the Management Committee as it will provide a snapshot of where the club stands at present and where the membership wants to be in the future. The questionnaire will be distributed at the next club meetings. Please take the time to provide answers to the questions posed. As I have already said, the answers will be provided by ticking the appropriate box. e.g. a question may be: "How many images do you normally submit on a compet ition night?"

1 2 3 4 5 6 Please take the time to complete the questionnaire. The information gathered is strictly confidential and may be provided anonymously. There are no right or wrong answers. This will help us plan next year’s activities. Bob Cook

How and why did you start in photography?

I was given a camera by my Father to record our wanderings.

Do you remember your first camera?

It was a Franke Werke in the old 120 format, but I can’t remember much about it.

Do you use film/digital or both?

I use digital now, thanks to Jenny Scarf who talked me in to taking up photography again, and I like to do all the dry processing and fiddling with images. What type of photography do you find the hardest to take?

Landscapes, and especially the bush scenes.

What photos do you like to take the best?

Birds, plants and searching for a good shot for the Club Set subject, that’s always a challenge.

Whose photos in the Camera Club do you admire the most?

That’s hard to pick, every one has super images and they cover such a range of topics and ideas that it is impossible to single out one person. What are your thoughts on today’s Judges?

They are very interesting and informative, thank goodness they all have very different opinions. What advice would you give to a new beginner in photography?

See the finished image before you press the shutter then keep on firing.

Do you follow any sport or team or have a hobby?

I play Bridge (not well), also a Swimming NSW Technical Official Referee and President of Blacktown Swimming Club What has been your favourite holiday and travels?

Trip to China and a long trip to lthe UK going down memory lane. Name one thing we don’t know about you?

I like Irish Whiskey.

Where do you see the Camera Club heading?

Towards bigger and better things especially as people get more adventurous.

Any Comments?

Very glad that I joined, where else could you find so many friendly and helpful people all together. People that do not guard their abilities and are more than happy to share their knowledge with new members.

Well done to everyone who entered this month’s competition which included the set subject of Photojournalism. We had 144 entries from 35 members in including an entry from Jeff Lowe to win his first award, congratulations. Our judge Tony Egan, provided thorough feedback on all the images entered which we hope members will find helpful. Thanks again to everyone who submitted images for the exhibition in the RSL foyer, and to those who helped with the set up and dismantling. Rule of Thirds In Composition

When you photograph a subject, imagine your picture area divided into thirds both horizontally and vertically. The intersections are the areas you should place your subjects or you can place things along the imaginary lines. You can also use the rule of thirds as a guideline for the placement of the horizon, either use upper third or lower third line depending on your scene. Helps you create a well composed and balanced landscape or portrait. Below are some randomly selected images from our website showing how the main subject is placed along these lines.
