The success of edgebandingspecialist Ostermann is not just theresult of a stockholding of more

It was a momentous occasion when more than twohundred invited guests from every corner of our industrymade their way through horizontal driving rain to the

marquee that had been erected in a small corner ofDecorative Panels Group’s new Lowfields II site. Afterspeeches by Group Chairman, Steve Gaunt, GroupManaging Director, Guy Metcalfe, Robbie O’Neal fromBiesse UK and the new components factory’s ManagingDirector, Malcolm Forward, MP Craig Whittaker performeda short opening ceremony and Lowfields II was officiallywelcomed as the newest factory to be added to theDecorative Panels Group’s lineup.

Guests were treated to guided factory tours around thenew 175,000 sq ft site and, on the way, there was anopportunity to browse Bentleys and Aston Martins - fineexamples of Britain’s manufacturing heritage. It seems fittingthat these two great marques should be present to saluteanother which, in its own field, is every bit as iconic, everybit as state-of-the-art, and every bit as proud to be British.

As pioneers of the lamination of decorative paper foilsto wood-based panels in the 1970s, Decorative Panels hasforged a reputation for quality and service which has takenit to the very top. Now, with production capacity for over600,000 panels a week, this 400-employee, £80m turnovercompany has become one of the largest in Europe.

With Lowfields II, a truly British icon was recognisedand its marque deserves to be alongside the Best of British.

FURNITURE JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2012 • 9

If an example was needed to illustratethe old saying Necessity is the Motherof Invention, then surely Kings Lynn-

based Guy Raymond Engineering wouldbe it. Shifts in industry, recessions andcompetition from the Far East have allplayed their part in shaping the GuyRaymond Engineering of today - but aclue to the reason for the on-goingsuccess of this sixty-strong manufacturerof castors and furniture fittings lies inthe name: to its very core, it is anengineering company - and engineersare renowned for thinking their wayaround problems.

From the very earliest days in 1948when young engineer Raymond R JDaniels and his partner, Peter GuyBerridge, put their names to GuyRaymond Engineering, the company hasresponded to customer demand with araft of ingeniously designed products forthe furniture and post-war automotiveindustry, including steel closing caps

which blanked the ends of tubular officefurniture of the fifties. With the midfifties came plastic and the growingcompany turned its attention towardsinjection moulding. Guy Raymondplastic closures found applications in allmanner of tubular steel products and itwas not long before adjustable heightfeet, mouldings of all denominationsand plastic bed legs were leaving thefactory. But the breakthrough intocastors - now the product for which GuyRaymond Engineering is perhaps bestknown - did not come until the 70s,when Raymond Daniels developed theKing Glide, an early twin wheel castor.By 1985, the company had developedthe GR range of castors and, not longafter, added gas springs and five-staroffice chair bases into its portfolio.

The influx of Far Eastern productswhich hit the UK around the turn of themillennium saw the Mother ofInvention at her most inventive. Now

Above: Managing Director, Cedric Daniels (left), Founder,Raymond Daniels (centre) and Engineering Director, KelvinDaniels (right).

under the direction of Raymond’s son,Kelvin Daniels, the technical boffins atGuy Raymond Engineering appliedtheir minds to a new and moresophisticated range of cleverlydesigned braked castors, aimedpredominantly at the medical, institutional and premium furnituremarkets, where supreme quality, design and longevity count. Now, inthe form of the GRX range, it is thestaple product of a company thatprovides for the most demandingsectors of industry and exports morethan 60% of its production.

Browse through the pages of thecompany’s latest catalogue and you’llfind everything from adjustable feetand simple display cabinet comp-onents to five-star bases in metal andplastic, telescopic gas spring covers, round tube inserts, square inserts, glides - and more. In fact, think of aplastic or metal component that goesinto mobile equipment and there’s agood chance you’ll find it in there. Butpride of place surely goes to the newGRX range of castors. It is, quiteliterally, poetry in motion.

Says managing director, CedricDaniels, “Our new GRX range is forinstitutional use, but it’s designed to

look aesthetically pleasing. There is a fullsuite with sizes up to 5 inches. It can beused on cabinets, chairs, tables, mobilestorage units, screens... We have sizes tosuit all applications. And for medicaluses, the GRX range is ideal foreverything from over-bed tables to alltypes of mobile and diagnostic units.”

Guy Raymond Engineering hasmade the medical sector its specialityand for hospitals, surgeries and dentalpractices, where hygiene is particularlyimportant, the use of silver-containingcompounds has made possible thedevelopment of anti-microbial castors. There’s even a range of special, fully-conductive and non/low magneticcastors which are ideal for use near MRIscanners, or where anti-static propertiesare essential. But more than justpractical, Guy Raymond castors areengineered to perform tirelessly anddesigned to be a pleasing conclusion tohighly functional furniture. Choose fromchrome, gold, or satin finish, or even acorporate colour to suit a shopfittingapplication. Such is the flexibility of thisquintessentially British company’s rangethat it contains something to satisfypractically every application.

As worktops are usually selected oncethe door choice has been made, it isvital that the two elements should

co-ordinate. Egger’s range of worktopsaims to make the process as simple aspossible by presenting door and worktopcombination ideas together for the firsttime. The development of textures such asEgger’s deep linear ST22 finish and theenhanced quality of the reproduction hasled to growth in the use of melaminefaced chipboard for frontals. The rise ofMFC slab doors is a great example of thetrend towards adding both value andquality as they offer a premium level lookfor an entry level price. This gives kitchenmanufacturers the potential to increasesales margins in a challenging market.

The trend towards mixing andmatching woodgrains with uni colours fordoor fronts has been met with Egger’sbrown/grey and green/grey palettes thathave been designed to work with thecompany’s woodgrains. As this trendcontinues to grow in popularity within thekitchen market, deciding which colours tocombine can be a difficult process. Tomake it easier, Egger’s design team hasput together a number of doorsuggestions for each worktop in theworktop brochure.

Samet’s new Smartboxdrawer system brings a

quality feel - and realpractical benefits - to

your furniture at a pricethat might surprise you.

How many times have you been toa furniture show, found greatdesigns with nice quality

cabinetry, then pulled a drawer andgasped as it wiggled its way out onrunners that racked and grated? In thisday and age, there’s no excuse forabandoning quality where it’s felt most.Consumers expect a quality feel toquality designs and it doesn’t cost anarm and a leg to give them it.

Samet, the Turkish slides and hingesspecialist, set its 120-strong Research &Development team the task of comingup with a new generation drawersystem which offered not only supremequality soft closing technology, it alsooffered a smoother and quieter actionfor a real quality feel. As always, theSamet design team set to work withenthusiasm and surpassed the brief bya wide margin with Smartbox.

With their brand new synchronisedrollers, Smartbox drawers provideexceptional stability throughout their

entire extension. And, thanks to someclever engineering, horizontal oscillationhas effectively been eliminated.

Moreover, according to Samet’sengineers, by utilising the new synchro-nisation system and simultaneouslyincreasing the side profile strength ofthe drawer boxes, the Smartbox drawersystem is now easily able to carry either40kg or 65kg of load. The picture mayshow a small child; 65kg equates to amodestly proportioned adult.

The feeling of quality is not limitedto the way the Smartbox drawersystem extends; with its new softclosing system, it doesn’t matterwhether the drawer is closed gently orslammed, the final close is soft andsophisticated, affirming the quality ofthe furniture beyond shadow of doubt.

Whilst Samet luxury comes at a pricewhich might surprise you, you mighteven see the benefit in increased sales.

Hettich introduces the “Innotech Drawer in a Box” for its most popular formats.

Hettich's InnoTech system provides a foundation for qualitykitchens throughout the UK. With a choice of materials, drawer side designs and numerous formats, Hettich's

InnoTech has proved to be a drawer platform system of choicefor designers who prioritise individuality for their customers.

InnoTech suits all levels of production but, with distributorsand small to medium-sized manufacturers in mind, Hettich hasintroduced InnoTech Drawer in a Box for its most popular470mm-depth, silver formats up to 30kg in capacity, withintegrated soft-close. The modular system brings together allthe elements for a drawer set in a single box, which is easy tostore, transport and handle.

With a single code for each InnoTech Drawer in a Boxoption, it is also highly efficient from an administrative point ofview: a pot and pan drawer with rails, for example, is identifiedfor ordering with a single code, rather than eight if itsconstituent parts are ordered separately.

Instead of having to stock left and right hand sides andQuadro runners, rear and front panel connectors and so on,they all come in one compact box per drawer.

This new level of convenience adds to the build quality andchoice behind InnoTech's success. With rigorously-tested steelball bearing Quadro runners, up to 50kg load capacity for therange, and German build values, the quality of InnoTech is a

given, while push-to-open or Easys electromechanical openingand integrated soft-close features ensure ease-of-use.

The InnoTech platform system can be specified in a white, silver or the increasingly popular anthracite finish. TopSidesand DesignSides are powerful yet simple design options for potand pan drawers. TopSides in steel, plastic or glass are simplyclipped in between the railing and the frame, adding stylishstorage space inside the drawer, whereas a totally bespoke lookcan be created by using DesignSide instead of a railing.

With partial or full-extension runners, InnoTech comes in astandard 470mm drawer depth to make the most of UKcabinet sizes, but different depths are available for bedroomand bathroom applications.

“This is German engineering for furniture at its best,” saysHettich UK marketing manager, Colin Patterson. “The detailsand quality behind the cabinet fascia are becoming increasinglyimportant, particularly in kitchen specification, and with this inmind, InnoTech is a fantastic sales tool. Now with the addedconvenience of InnoTech Drawer in a Box, we have a solutionwhich provides the end user with a superbly functioning andaesthetically-pleasing drawer system. Manufacturers benefitfrom improved storage and administration, while distributorscan offer retailers and fitters a convenient new option.”

Based in Detmold,Germany, the group has operatingcompanies around the world and isrenowned for its excellent productquality and progressive approach todeveloping new adhesive technology.Jowat prides itself on being a 'one-stop shop' for all the adhesive needsof the furniture industry, offering arange of EVA, PO and PUR hot meltsfor edge banding and profile wrap-ping, PU dispersions for membranepressing and PVA adhesives for dow-elling and general wood bonding.

A particularly popular product isthe Jowat 150.90 membrane pressing

adhesive. Available in 25kg or 1000kgpack sizes, the product has a low reac-tivation temperature, meaning that itis suitable for many types of presses. Also with excellent lay flat characteris-tics, the product achieves a very good

quality finish on high gloss doors, with little or no 'orange peel' affect.

PUR based adhesives are also pop-ular where a particularly high bondstrength or high heat resistance is re-quired. Jowat products are available ina range of pack sizes and formats andcan be used for applications such asprofile wrapping and edgebanding.

Chemique’s investment ina new Interwood

membrane press will adda new dimension to the

company’s technicallaboratory and benefitcustomers who want totrial adhesives with orwithout membrane.

Chemique Adhesives has recently invested in a newInterwood Membrane Press for their state-of-the-arttechnical laboratory. The laboratory already

contains spray booths, presses and testing equipment andwill drive forward the company's innovation anddevelopment of its membrane press adhesive range. Thelaboratory now brings key facilities for membrane pressingand testing under one roof with a small scale productionarea where panels can be sprayed, pressed and tested forheat resistance and fibre tear. The Interwood press can beoperated with or without a membrane and its flexibilitycaters for the diverse conditions experienced inChemique’s growing export trade.

Since acquisition of Protak in 2008, ChemiqueAdhesives has expanded its range of membrane pressadhesives from 2 grades to 7, covering every aspect of themanufacturing process. As well as a universal grade ProtakMP/M and a budget product Protak 2831 for smallerpresses and vacuum models, Chemique now offers oneand two component versions of high gloss, low and hightemperature reactivation products.

Low reactivation adhesives have become popular forhigh gloss foils to avoid the 'orange peel' effect andChemique offers 2 grades: Protak 2812 and 2855,reactivating at 50-60°C but with a high initial bond tocounteract the memory forces when the foil cools. Forhigh temperature activation (60-80°C) Chemique offersProtak 2847 and 2856.

All the adhesives for membrane pressing are highlythixotropic, spray well, have a high speed of crystallisationand are fast curing. The thixotropy in particular isimportant in avoiding marring of the surface which canarise when using thin PVC foils. The behaviour of athixotropic adhesive is also important in that the Protakrange, having an index typically above 3.5, will not sinkunevenly into the panel but remains on the surface so, afterreactivation and pressing, it confers a glue line of constantthickness, minimising telegraphing and orange peel.

A key factor in choosing the right adhesive is it'sdurability. Here Chemique can give added customerconfidence with its in-house technical testing facilities. Each customer will have at its disposal regular test reportson their panels, including Adhesion and Surface materialheat resistance testing to BS6222: 1999 Part 3 and alsoPull off Adhesion test to ASTM D1451. The Pull offAdhesion test measures the bond strength using aportable pull off adhesion tester to measure the force topull a specified test diameter of foil away from the coresubstrate using hydraulic pressure.

Commenting on the new investment, Clive Robson,Protak’s Product Manager, says, “This new facility willallow us to build on the success we have had to date withour range of membrane press glues. We aim to create aCentre of Excellence where customers can come to us tobe trained and to test our different grades of adhesive. Itwill also give us the opportunity to build relationships withother material suppliers to compare the different foils andMDF panels on the market, to produce optimum results invinyl door production.”

The introduction of the firstcordless biscuit jointer to Makita’srange is another ‘first’ for the

brand. The new Makita BPJ180 LXTbiscuit jointer is available in 18v or14.4v versions with the powerful, quick-charge Makita Lithium-ion battery cells. The BPJ180 and 140 feature the slimlinebody first recognised on the cordlessangle grinders. This narrow diameterbody provides comfortable, easy-to-gripmanoeuvrability of a lightweightmachine that weighs just 3.2kg.

With a 100mm diameter x 4mm, 6-tooth blade, the six stage depthadjustment is selected by the convenientknob at the side of the cutting head. Theblade will run up to 10,000rpm. Theangle guide can be raised or loweredwith the fine adjustment of the rack andpinion mechanism and the angleadjustable fence can be locked in anyposition between 0° and 90° withpositive stops at 0°, 45° and 90°. Shaftlocks make blade changing simple andsafe while an anti-restart function kicks inshould the blade overload protector cutthe current to protect the motor. The

machine will not restart until it has beenswitched off correctly at the triggerswitch and reset. It comes with dust-bag,fast charger and batteries.

Also new to the range is the MakitaBTP141 18V Lithium-ion cordless 4-mode drill driver, pictured right. With asimple twist of the selection collar, theBTP141 can be switched from highpower impact driver to percussion drill, then to normal 2-speed drilling andfinally into screwdriver mode. Additionalselection can be made in each settingsimply by pressing the LED indicatorbuttons on the base of the machine. Forexample, when using impact drivermode, maximum torque of 150Nm isselected by keying the LED key to setting3. This automatically limits the speed toa maximum of 1,500rpm and 1,200impacts per minute (ipm). A single LEDjob light and battery fuel gauge are alsofeatures of this versatile machine. Brush-less Motors give improved performancewith less friction and better battery life.

Maka’s PE90, launched at Holzhandwerk 2012, is a brandnew fixed bed, moveable gantry machine which is not only anew addition, but the new flagship model in the company’sstandard range. 20, 33 or a 51 place tool changers areavailable and, unlike many machines, do not slow the

machine down because it is preparing for them whilstmachining. A shuttle unit takes the tool to the

head, so the changeover literally takes sixor seven seconds. The system also

detects the tool being usedand compensates for any

errors made by theprogrammer, preventing such asover-speeding. All theoperator has to do isselect the tool hewants. The machinedoes the rest.

The PE90 offers a feed rate of 100m/min andz-axis speed of 60m/min. Acceleration is

increased to 5m2 per second compared with2m2 per second on a typical machine. At this

speed, safety mats and bumpers areineffective, so Maka changed the securitysystems, making them contactless. They

mounted a safety scanner on the bed of themachine which monitors three zones. A

second camera detects movement and slowsthe machine if anyone comes too close.

The CNC table on the PE90 is a new design. It’s servo-controlledon all pods and rails. Each beam has a separate gearbox, rackand pinion system and an Absolute measuring system whichrequires no referencing. The bars move only when required - andto an accuracy of 50 microns - and all four beams and 12 podscan be repositioned in 30 seconds. Machining starts as soon asthe first bars are in place, again saving time. Additionally, oneach pod is a vacuum and a pneumatic circuit. The pneumaticclamps replace toggle clamps and are ideal for difficultcomponents. The pneumatic clamps will move out of the wayautomatically to allow continuous machining of edges, enablingchairs and table legs to be made easily.

Such high speed demands a rigid guide system and here, the PE90, like all Maka machines, is driven on both sides of thegantry on hefty rails.

Compared with a three- or four-axis machine, whichrequires additional, expensive aggregates, Maka’s 5-axismachines can work out less - and they use only standardcutting tools.

FURNITURE JOURNAL SEPTEMBER 2012 • 41

Klaus Kern, Maka’s new MD/CEO,replaces Ulrich Gnädinger, who initially

took over Maka, restructuring thecompany and instigating rapid

redevelopment of the model ranges.Klaus joins Maka from a solid

engineering background in high endaerospace and defence projects and

model engineering.

A German company with its roots in the woodworking, plastics and aluminiumindustries, Maka offers three main types of machine: a fixed bed, moveable gantrymachine; a portal-type machine with fixed bridge, moving tables and either three- orfive-axis multi-head; and a bridge centre-type machine for such as roof and timber-framed house construction. Almost all Maka machines are five-axis and the companyhas 25 years of experience of manufacturing five-axis machines.

Pronto Joinery in Norwich has replaced threewood waste heaters with brand new modelsfrom Wood Waste Technology. The companywanted to benefit from advanced technologyand efficiency and had read about the rangeoffered by Wood Waste Technology. Prontoconverts all of its wood waste into briquetteswhich are loaded into three wood wasteburners that generate heat to warm the factoryin winter. Surplus briquettes are bagged and sold to the public via local supermarkets and other outlets.

Following a site survey, three new Wood Waste Technology WT15 heaters were ordered andinstalled by connecting to the existing ducting. Peter Scott, MD of Pronto Joinery. says the company isproud of recycling all its timber waste. “While it is great for the environment that we don’t need to useany valuable fossil fuels such as coal or oil for heat, it is also good for our company as it saves money onheating bills and provides an additional income stream from the excess briquettes.”

The new heaters have been in situ for a year and have just had their first annual maintenanceservice. Pronto has been impressed by the level of customer care and service from Wood WasteTechnology.

Kurt Cockroft, MD of Wood Waste Technology, says that it is a testimony to the quality andreliability of WWT machines that they were chosen by a company with previous experience in woodwaste burning. As well as offering a site survey, design, manufacture, installation and after care, thecompany services all types of wood waste heater and supplies genuine spares up to 60 percent cheaperthan other suppliers. Alstons Upholstery Ltd are reaping the benefits ofowning a Linde approved forklift truck. The awardwinning family run business needed a cost effectivereplacement for its old five-tonne forklift so MichaelParker, Engineering and Facilities Managerm, setabout researching the new and second hand market.“A truck of the right capacity was just one elementof the purchasing decision,” he says. “I looked atmany criteria from service response to truck design. Ineeded a truck suitable for the application that wasreliable and cost effective and with service backupshould anything go wrong. Once I had stacked upall the costs, buying an Approved Used truck fromLinde made the most sense. The trucks arerefurbished to such a high standard that they end upalmost new and are a more cost effective solution.”

Linde Approved Used trucks are an excellent cost effective alternative to investmentin a new truck. Typically ex contract hire, all Linde Approved trucks have beenmaintained from new by Linde’s national network companies and their 23 fullyequipped support centres. Linde Approved Used trucks are prepared to three levelsdesigned to suit individual budgets and applications. Only genuine Linde parts are fittedand LOLER/PUWER certification is provided with every truck.

Linde supplied Alstons with a five-tonne capacity truck, which is now hard at workmoving around 50 tonnes of fabric and timber a day. The Linde H50 is fitted with Lindehydrostatic transmission, which does not need differential, a conventional service brakeor a clutch. This reduced level of moving parts cuts down on maintenance costs.0845 608 5000www.used-forktrucks.co.uk
