It must have seemed like the end ofthe world when, back on August 8th,Coventry-based Ney Ltd found itself

the victim of an arson attack whichrazed its modern, well-appointedoffices, warehouse and showroom tothe ground. “Machines, hardware, consumables, customer records andorders - everything was destroyed,”recalls Managing Director, Gerd Ney.It’s small comfort that the perpetratorappears to be in Police hands: Ney Ltdshould have been celebrating its 30thyear in business. Instead, Gerd and histeam, with the determination that’sseen this Coventry-based champion ofBritain’s smaller furniture manu-facturers grow into an £18 million ayear force to be reckoned with, startedagain. From scratch.

“It was fortunate that we hadacquired the old Showerlux factory,”continues Gerd. “It was intended to bethe distribution hub for our growingdoors business. It is not ideal but wehave somewhere from where to work.”At 45,000 square feet, it’s half the size

of Ney’s former Siskin Drive premises -but at least it’s a starting point; a placefrom which to service the thousandplus calls which come in every day.

Remarkably, with the help ofsuppliers like Samet, Riken, Roma,Hornschuch, Laguna, Giplast, Clouting,MFB and others - of whose supportGerd cannot speak highly enough - theNey team is not only back in business, within six weeks it was up to 70-80 percent of its previous sales. “Oursuppliers were amazing,” recalls Gerd.“As soon as they heard about the fire,we started to receive calls asking whatthey could do to help. Some evencalled their staff back from summerholidays to increase their production sothey could supply us. Within 36 hoursthe first deliveries started to arrive. Ourown staff used their private mobilephone records to rebuild our customerdatabase. And, of course, many clientssent their good wishes andreassurances of continued business. Weare very grateful to all those whoassisted us.”

Its 30th anniversary year hasbeen more of a triumph overadversity than a celebration but, after a fire in August whichrazed the company to theground, Ney has bounced backto near full capacity.

Ney Ltd is a company that knows alot about assisting others and appreciates(perhaps more than most) the value ofbeing a reliable supplier in times of crisis.Probably more than any other company,Ney is responsible for helping an entiregeneration of craftsmen break free andset up on their own. Almost as if theywere his own children, Gerd recountswith pride the names of some of thefamous brands that started small andfound the road to success and growthwith assistance from Ney. “We haveabout three thousand customers,” hesays. “Most are smaller panel-processors.These are the companies we can helpmost: the starting businesses; the smallerworkshops. And every week we havesomeone contact us who wants to startin business.”

Ney’s service begins with advice andassistance. “We can provide thetechnical services and the machineknowledge that many people who startin business don’t have,” says Gerd.“Larger companies have full engineeringteams. When you start on your own,you don’t always have that background;you learn as you go. We offer a mix ofnew and refurbished machines to suitthe budget of a starting company.

“A big problem for many start-upcompanies is finance. Banks don’talways understand their customers andit can be hard for a new business tofund the purchase of machines andgrow. This is often where we can helpmost. The banks are prepared to giveus funds to look after our smallercustomers. We finance the machinesbut we can also help in cases ofliquidity problems, partnershipproblems, or expansion problems. Wehelp sort out human problems.”

Ney started with consumables andbuilt an enviable range which hasbeen proven to work problem-freewith the machines it sells. Thecompany’s knowledge of edgebanders- the machine on which its name wasfounded - is second to none. Thestocks of hotmelt adhesives andedging tapes, dowels for drills andfoils for membrane presses may not beas vast as before the fire but everyinch of the new site is being utilised.New racking and new forklifts will bein by the time this magazine hits thepress. Already a new demonstrationarea has been set up with Cehisaedgebanders, Paoloni saws and othersmaller machines. Back in stock arehinges, slides, and lifts; foils; shelfpegs, adjustable feet and most of theconsumables range.

So what does the future hold forNey Ltd?

In terms of location, Gerd and histeam are keeping their options open. What is not in any doubt is thecompany’s commitment to helping thesmaller manufacturer with technicalservice, panel processing equipmentand proven product lines. Adversity hasnot only strengthened the team’sresolve and determination, it hasbrought about a root and branchappraisal of how best this may beachieved. It would not be at allsurprising to find new ideas, newdirections and new services added tothis resourceful company’s offer in thenear future. “We would like to becomea one-stop shop for the smaller manu-facturer,” says Gerd. “Already we areplanning to introduce new services.”

To find out more call Ney on 0247630 8100 or visit www.ney.co.uk

“Samet were amazing. Their offer of helpcame immediately.”

Décor specialist, Hornschuch, was incrediblysupportive and offered immediate assistancewith stock levels.

Six weeks on and the warehouse was organisedand supplying manufacturers around the UK.

The Turkish edgebanding manufacturer Romaproved to be a real star.

Smaller machines, like this Paoloni, mark the start of the new demonstration area.

“It was summer holidays on the Continent,” Gerd remembers. “Wehad to recall machines from our bases in Scotland and Ireland.” EBM

edgebanders are central to Ney’s product range.

It’s been a while since I was last atMoOD; in fact, it was probably Decositwhen I last visited Brussels. It’s still a

cosy show that’s enjoyable for the eyeand easy on the feet but my goodness, how the exhibitor profile has changed! And gone for good, it seems, is theContract Hall; in its place, a contractfabric display.

Though British visitors were amongthe top three by volume to attend, Britishexhibitors were few and far between.Only Ulster Weavers had a direct offer forthe furniture manufacturer. The otherssold predominantly through distributors.

Contrast this with the bustling Turkishdelegation, all of whom seemed keen todo business with MoOD buyers. Thoughvisitor numbers were down to around7,000 this year, the Turkish seemed to beentertaining more than most - and smallwonder: the quality of their jacquards anddobbies is up there with the best.

The Trends section is alwaysinteresting - and descriptive. This yearthere were three trends: Transition,Prorsum and Eccentrics. The soft pallet ofTransition “flirts with nature”. The coloursare soft; misty. Green and blue are thebasic colours with pale orange, softpurple or pink, milky white and white.

In contrast, Prorsum provides apowerful, direct, urban pallet with anaggressive, confrontational feel. Black is“matter than mat”; red or orange,“glossier than high gloss”.

Eccentrics includes classic fabrics inthe most expensive materials, sometimescrafted by hand, sometimes so complexthat they “edge towards unattainablycostly”. Eccentrics exudes deep coloursand royal, sophisticated elegance andincludes golds, silvers and coppers. Redtakes on an unseen depth. Purple andturquoise are bright, especially incombination with gold.

Flame retardant, tear-resistant, lightfast, abrasion resistant, long lasting, easy to clean and a MoOD Blue

FURNITURE JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2012 • 13

2012 has been a momentous yearfor the integrated technologyspecialist, Lectra. Highly regarded

throughout the upholstery sector for itsvisionary software and both fabric andleather cutting solutions, Lectralaunched its new Versalis Furnitureleather cutter in April - and swiftlyfollowed this in July with the launch of anew line of Vector fabric cutters.

Significant increases in the cost ofleather and the scarcity of skilled labourmake Versalis Furniture’s four cuttingsolutions extremely attractive. The newrange - consisting of a cutter with one ortwo cutting heads with mono-conveyoror multi-conveyors, a solution to analysehides and a software suite to manageand optimise operations - provides theopportunity to save on raw materialsand enables skilled operators to focus onvalue added tasks. According to Lectra,“The new, modular Versalis Furniturecovers 80% of the market’s needs: sofas, seats, chairs and reclining chairs; entrylevel, middle and high end products;medium and mass production; and veryflexible to rigid leather.” The addedbenefit is Versalis Furniture takes care of

all scanning, nesting, cutting and off-loading without slowing down orinterrupting the cycle.

Every manufacturer wants to increasecompetitiveness and profitability. Thenew range of Vector fabric cuttersprovides better control and productoptimisation, as well as introducingseveral anti-error devices which simplifyand accelerate production. 120 sensorsmonitor the cutting head to optimisecutting in real time and reduce materialconsumption while the predictivemaintenance system prevents potentialfailures. With a touch screen interface andintuitive software, the Vector Furniturerange is as easy to use as it is eco-friendly.

Visionary software is something forwhich Lectra has always been knownand with DesignConcept Furniture, thisinnovative company has made it eveneasier for furniture manufacturers todesign, make samples and move ideasseamlessly into production. With thelatest version, sampling time has beenreduced. Visualisation is photorealisticand DesignConcept Furniture works withWindows 7 and XP.

There’s no need tocompromise on quality

with hinges, slides and liftsfrom Samet.

Have you ever wondered what thedifference is between a productthat’s good and one that really

stands out from the crowd? When it’s ahinge, or a slide, or a lift, it’s not alwayseasy to tell. At first sight, aesthetics playan important part. Open the door, slideout the drawer, lift the flap and you’llsoon get an impression of whether thefunction measures the looks. For mostconsumers, that’s probably as far asthey will go when they examine thekitchens in a retailer’s display. And if itfeels good, and it’s aestheticallypleasing to the eye, they’ll probablyassume it is good.

Of course, as a professional, youknow that’s not necessarily the case. You also know, if it doesn’t stand thetest of time and something breaks, orceases to support, or ceases to softclose like it did when it was new, theproblem will eventually come bouncingback to you.

Quality is the one thing which, though perhaps less apparent at firstsight, really sets a product apart. Andon this subject, the Turkish furniture

and accessories manufacturer, Samet, will not compromise.

Samet tests its hinges, slides and lift-up door systems mercilessly for loading, life, impact and safety. In its 120-strongR&D centre, technicians check forcorrosion resistance so even in the mosthumid of kitchen or bathroom environ-ments, Samet products will performtirelessly, year after year. Samet's StarTrack hinge, which is designed for easyremoval and installation, easilysurpasses the 80,000 opening-closingcycle durability test set down byGermany’s LGA, while Smart Slide andSmart Box drawers surpass the LGA’s60,000 opening-closing and durabilitytests by an equally wide margin. Similarrecognition and certification has beengranted to Samet’s products by TSE andFIRA. And they don’t just look to seehow pretty it is. They don’t compro-mise on the one thing that really makesa product stand out from the crowd.

Neither should you.For details of all Samet’s products

New from Abet Laminati is the Parade Collection created by Giulio Iachetti. This quirky rangeof 12 digitally printed laminate décors is available in three shades. Parade is made up of twomajor groups of décors. One comes from the study of six different units developed through astrong digital approach. The other is the result of freehand drawings that were scanned andprocessed. The digital age décors are called the Moduli Family and include Tartan, Fishbone,Rockets, Paesmio, Knock-Out and Artichoke while the Fatto A Mano family includes Furrows,Betulia, Yayoi, Massaua, Derby and Canvas.

Paesmio depicts small white houses clinging to the sides of an imaginary hill, as a tributeto the Italian landscape while Fishbone is just what its name suggests. Yayoi is the name of aJapanese artist whose signature style involves polka dots - here the superimposition of differentcoloured ink drops creates a stunning effect.Samples: 020 7473 6915, www.abetuk.com

Looking for a discreetsolution which will bond

heavyweight materials likeglass to mdf or other

substrates? Take a look attesa® ACXplus.

Reliable bonding of differentsubstrates has long been a keyissue for furniture manufacturers,

where the different thermal expansioncharacteristics of metals, wood andglass pose potential difficulties.

A new, patented, double-sidedadhesive tape technology from tesa® -ACXplus - is the answer. Featuringexcellent viscoelasticity, it enablessuccessful bonding of a variety ofdifferent substrates - even heavy, dead-weights - onto solid panels and rough, uneven surfaces. It resists the differentialthermal expansion of the materialswhilst providing resistance to vibrationor shock and seals against liquids.

The products are based on high-performance acrylates and have beenspecially developed for dependablelong-term bonding in furnitureapplications. Double-sided adhesivetapes offer process improvements, cost-efficiency and - importantly for anindustry where the aesthetics of theproduct are key - they provide seamless, precise finished results, clear ofunsightly fixings.

In comparison to processes whichmay even involve welding or rivets to

secure extreme loads, tesa® ACXplusdouble-sided tapes provide a cleaner, quicker, cheaper alternative which is justas effective. ACXplus has been used forapplications as diverse as the mountingof coloured glass panels to cabinet doors(where a completely secure, yet seamlessfinish, free of fixings, is desireable) andthe mounting of protecting bumper railson furniture. ACXplus compensates forgaps and offers high absorbsion onmechanical impacts.

ACXplus is also ideal for decorativefurniture panels and is extremelyeffective for bonding parts with uneven, irregular and hard-to-bond surfaces. Itprovides a stable mounting for PVC,MDF wood or aluminium decorativetrims on glass or furniture, closing gapsbehind the trim and offering good peeladhesion to different substrates.

The latestexample of such an investment is“Press 15” at the Wiener Neudorflocation, near Vienna. The facility hasproduced Max Compact Panels incontrolled operation since February2012. Its production capacity isaround 1.4 million m2 of panelsannually. Production plants such asthis make possible the pioneeringinnovations for which FunderMax hasbecome renowned.

24 • FURNITURE JOURNAL NOVEMBER 2012

It’s been a while since the smiles, theeager handshakes and the scratchingof signatures on order forms have

been seen in any meaningful way at amachinery exhibition. But among thewoodworking machinery stands atW12, the general impression seemed tobe that the market had bottomed outand Britain’s furniture industry was onceagain on the ascent, albeit at a shallowrate of climb. Machines had been sold.Business was being written. And thenumber of new machines and newproducts at W12 suggested their man-ufacturers felt this, too. It was, in mostrespects, a very positive exhibition.

Although comparatively small innumber, exhibitors in the materials andcomponents section used W12 to intro-duce many of the trends seen at In-terzum, Sicam and ZOW. The buzz wordwas texture. On the David Cloutingstand, unicolours had been given tex-tured finishes. Silverwood Doors hadmade excellent use of Renolit’s textureddécors and the deep, textured pressingson the Inpress stand were nothing shortof spectacular. New from Ostermann

were woodworm edgebands - andthey’re good! A short hop away on theBoere stand, the ultimate texture ma-chine (from the Select range) was makinglight work of the rustic look on timberand veneer, while the oscillating head onWeinig’s P2400 offered a new dimensionin textured profiling and moulding. Withthe Cojet machine, shown for the firsttime in the UK on the RW stand, it’s evenpossible to print with texture.

Hard on the heels of the texture trendat W12 came shape. On its classy, openstand, Maka demonstrated the versatilityof a five-axis machine for added value 3Dwork, while Vector and Vitap showed theirprowess in the edgebanding of contouredpanels. All the way from New Zealand, the Vector, another RW principal, offereda particularly impressive, and fullyautomatic, solution to curvy desktops.

The range of edgbanding materials(and edgebanding suppliers) seems togrow every year. Döllken, Ostermann,Hranipex and a handful of others wereall showing new décors at W12. I partic-ularly like Digital Edge from Döllken. It’sa magnificent development with usesfrom bespoke furniture to shopfitting.

Sadly, none of the major hinge andslide manufacturers had signed up toW12, though BES, a member of theBillington Group, showed a range oflift-up and pop-up solutions for hidingflat screens and microwaves.

New to the dust extraction scenewas Ecogate Ltd with its third genera-tion energy-saving system of gates andcontrollers. But maybe the greatest sur-prise was to be found on the CD Ma-chinery stand: a refurbished Fercell filterand extraction system that lookedbrand new. At a third to a half of thecost of new, this service is invaluable tostart-ups, schools and small companies.

So how do I sum up W12? Quiet insome parts, busy in others but full ofsurprises and awash with new ideas. Itwould be good to see it grow for 2014.

tthhee bbeesstt ooff ww1122There were so many new

machines and products thatW12 felt like a much bigger

exhibition than it was.

makes ultra thin glue joints (claimed to be “easily equivalent to industrial laser edges” when using PUR and suitable for “use in wet areas”) easy to achieve. The innovative GluJet technology has three independentheating circuits for the front section of the cartridge, the glue and the steel nozzle. The pressure cylinder

presses the cartridge or the granules against the heater elements at up to 6 bars, forcing the hot glue to risein the metering rod where it can be reprocessed. The control opens and closes the metering rod to meter the

glue precisely under pressure to the nozzle. Replenishment is automatic in the GluJet automatic. Acceptingedgebandings of up to 6mm and workpiece heights of up to 60mm, the Streamer is available with or

without pre-milling. For more information on this fantastic little machine call 01235 557600.

Add texture smoothly tosolid timbers or veneersand give your furniture, panel work or flooringproducts depth andcharacter with Boere’s newSelect X-Line brushtexturing machine.

uullttiimmaattee tteexxttuurreeTextureholics will absolutely love

the Boere Select X-Line brushtexturing machine. Adding

structure, character, depth and rusticappeal to solid wood and veneeredpanels has never been easier. With itsoscillating brushes, the Boere Select X-Line leaves the surface with a soft, satinfinish - or, at your choice, by using thecross-grain sanding unit ahead of thetexturing brushes, a scarved, almostsawcut structure can be applied. Idealfor the texturing of either furniturecomponents or flooring, the machinecan be equipped with different numbersand combinations of texturing brushesto create a unique, on-trend surface.

The Boere is easy to operate andsimple to maintain. Says Boere, “Easyaccess to the different machine partsand clear construction makesmaintenance quick and accurate”.

The cross-grain sanding unit relieson non-contact oscillation with minimalcompressed air consumption. Standard

are electronic belt run-off and ruptureprotection and the length of the belt isautomatically maintained.

Arevolutionary Cojet 2612 inkjetprinter made its UK debut on theRW stand at this year’s W12.

Enabling high definition flatbed printingof anything from woodgrains to pictureson flat panels, doors, wood, metal, ceramics and glass, or even concrete, the Cojet not only prints with inks thatare warranted UV stable for eight years,it can add texture to the surface. Theinkjet heads return to overprint theimage up to eight times building asurface with real depth. And the resulton a woodgrain such as oak, or otherdeep-pored timbers is very convincing.

Thanks to a clever UV lamp systemon each printing head, once printed theinks cure almost immediately makingthe Cojet 2612 a seriously productivemachine for any manufacturer requiringjust-in-time custom-designed décors.

The Cojet 2612 will print onmaterials of up to 100mm thickness -and interestingly, though the definition

does reduce with increasing depth, itwill print right into routed patterns, such as MDF doors. The generouslyproportioned table (2600 x 1200printable area) will take materials of upto 500 kilos and the Cojet 2612 willprint several different designs at oncewith a print definition of up to1440dpi (for comparison, all thephotographs in this magazine wereprepared to 300dpi, then printedthrough a coarser screen).

A pop-up pin system on the bedenables simple repeat positioning ofpanels, making the Cojet 2612 aserious production printer. Its uses inthe custom interiors, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and shopfittingsectors are only limited by imagination.

Available through RW Wood-machines of Bicester, the Cojet 2612 isfully supported for service, spares andinks by RW’s service engineers.

SCM reported a successful show with a good level of orders and enquiries for themachines on display from the Premium range. Customers interested in edgebandingcould see three machines in operation. Several were sold as melamine tape, 3mmPVC/ABS and solid wood lippings were applied to show the excellent quality of finishobtained, including corner rounding. On the K600, the RT-E panel edge trimming deviceprovides a perfect edge to the panels before edge gluing, due to the use of the frontcopying devices that allow a constant removal of material over the entire panel length.

Also on show was the Tech Z5 CNC Machining Centre, several machines from theSCM Classical and Minimax ranges and the entry level Pratix ‘S’ CNC machining centre.

W12 was also an opportunity to show the new operating system for the SCMPremium Division which is now in place around the world. This offers customers a morepersonalised approach and one stop shopping through SCM distributors. Are you one of the many who struggles with contouredgebanding but doesn’t have the budget to buy abig brand name machine? RW had the perfect

solution on its stand at W12: the Vector. The Vector isn’t a new-at-W12 machine but the very

simplicity of the operation and the versatility of thiscompact machine - not to mention its price tag ofsomething around £100k - make it worthy of more than justa passing mention. Depending on the material you’re using,it brings curved panels with external radii of 20mm andinternal radii of 50mm within reach of smaller workshops.According to managing director, Duncan Such, the quiteunique, patented gluing system “guarantees edge bondsbetter than any other edge contour system” and “the fastestcycle time of any contour edgebander; most straight lineedgebanders struggle to get a glue joint like this”.

Operating the Vector could not be simpler: there is noprogramming other than setting the start point. Theoperator places the panel in the start position and the headtravels to find the edge. A patented system keeps the headpressed against the edge of the panel, controlling thepressure and the speed to ensure a very tight bond.

The Vector will apply PP, acrylic, PVC, veneer - prettymuch any type of edgebanding - to boards includinghollowcore but, cautions Duncan, “we recommend usingan unfilled hotmelt of the best quality you can buy. Youcan’t compromise on contours, especially on high valuecontoured products that carry more margin.”

For details contact RW on 01869 244943.

What sets Maka apart is not only itsvery different stand; it’s the verydifferent approach it takes to solvingseemingly complex problems simply.

Underlining that Maka offers a different way of working, thespecialist five-axis CNC machining centre manufacturer presented itsstate-of-the-art technology from a very different, relaxed, open and

imaginative stand at W12. Although its flagship PE90 was not shown, thelatest version of the MK7s, with improved control and faster set-up times, was demonstrating the supreme versatility which has become the hallmarkof Maka machines. Like its big brother, the MK7s can be programmed tomake any 3D component, either through a CAD/CAM program, or by‘walking’ the head manually through the required task. The dedication ofMaka's team raises the bar for service and support ensuring the entire rangeof machinery remains a very attractive prospect for new and existingcustomers. End users cite that thesupport available locally is themost vital component to anypiece of equipment and Makademonstrated this at W12 bymaking several of its NC Eng-ineers available to discuss servicerequirements and queries.

Below: The new installation byMawera at BeModern.

Over the next 20 years,Mawera expertise will

help BeModern recoupthe cost of its new boiler

plant through the RHI.Mawera could help you

do the same.

There are significant financialadvantages to be gained bymanufacturers who choose their

new boiler plants wisely. That was themessage from industry specialist, JohnClissett, at Mawera’s W12 stand. Heshould know. Mawera’s recent install-ation at BeModern has just qualified forthe Renewable Heat Incentive operatedby OFGEM - and that means, for thenext 20 years BeModern will benefitfrom a feeding tariff which will seethem paid for every eligible kilowatt ofenergy their new plant produces.

“Not every installation qualifies,”says John. “The RHI only applies towater and steam boilers and for theheating of premises or offices and/orfor process heating.”

“However,” cautions John, “theRHI applies to the boiler, so it’s wiseto ensure you purchase a boiler that isdesigned and built to last for at least

20 years. The last plant we took out ofBeModern ran for 31 years.” Johnsupplied it.

Mawera boilers are built to qualitystandards which ensure they last.“Mawera over-engineers,” says John,“especially with regard to the movinggrates, the size of the combustionchamber, the automation of de-ashingand the design of systems for recirculationof fire gases to ensure low Nitrous Oxides.A Mawera boiler is built to last.

“Mawera is part the two billionpound Viessmann Group whichspecialises in all aspects of the design ofheating and energy systems. It hasmore than 35 years in the business andin excess of 5,000 proven installations.”

There were a good many surpriseson the W12 stand of DavidClouting Ltd. Alongside stunning

new interpretations of African Walnut inlight and dark colourways from LG -both of which were making their UKdebuts at W12 - were two new stonedécors, Dark Granite and a super smoothalternative called simply Stone. Designedto replicate solid surfacing materials at afraction of the cost, both versions werebang on trend.

LG often surprises with its novel inter-pretations of on-trend ideas. The sawcutlook, which MD Mike Clouting believeswill really only make its mark in specificwoodgrains, has been taken into LG’sunicolours to quite stunning effect. Thebackground picture on this page showsthe texture clearly.

Other new designs on the standincluded Taormina and Nancy Elm -both new elms from Schattdecor.

However, perhaps the biggestsurprises of all were to be found inarchive birch designs which, when theywere first launched, were too ahead ofthe market to work. They were findingfavour with manufacturers of varioustypes of furniture. Noce Stilo, anotherdesign from a decade ago, was alsoseeing a revival with sales increasingagain.

Highly Commended awards were madeto Trade Mouldings and FINSA.

That was the question asked byfirst time exhibitors Curvomaticin a tweet from the show – andreflected the mood throughoutWorking with Wood and Workingwith Design.

By the time the shows ended, therewere Sold at W12 signs on manystands - underlining the success of

the event. Exhibition Director AngelaMcGowan reports that attendance wasgood throughout - with Monday andWednesday busier than in previousyears. There’s no better recomm-endation than the fact that 70 percentof the space for the W14 show (NEC,October 5th-8th, 2014) has alreadybeen booked.

Highlights from both shows werethe presentations from individualexhibitors in the Presentation Theatres. The theatre in the Working with Designarea was also the venue for thepresentation of the Design inManufacturing Awards. These werejudged by a panel of industry expertschaired by John Legg of the GearingMedia Group. Five entrants wereshortlisted with EDP and the MovacGroup as runners up. HighlyCommended awards were made toTrade Mouldings and FINSA whileCurvomatic took the winning award.

Reactions from both exhibitors andvisitors were positive throughout the

show. Carl O’Meara of J&C O’Mearaand Kundig said that they had moreserious enquiries about wide beltsanders at the show than in the past sixmonths. Homag’s Paul Cooper saidthat even in tough times for capitalequipment sales they were about 90percent of where they wanted to beand were looking to W12 for the extraboost. Homag has rebooked for W14with a large central position.

Rafael Willisch, MD of FINSA UKsaid the show had been a revelationand had put them in contact withmany new customers. The companylaunched Superpan STAR lightweightboard with great success. When Patrick Green bought Aylesbury-based PremierArchitectural Joinery he saw more than just an opportunity inwoodworking when he realised there was a chance to developa new income stream by converting waste wood from theproduction process into fuel and cash.

Patrick observed that the company was paying todispose of around six tonnes of wood waste every six weeksyet had no heating within the factory unit. While researchingmore efficient ways of operating, he came across wood wasteheaters and contacted Kurt Cockroft at Wood WasteTechnology for more information. He was delighted to learnthat he could get a return on an investment in wood wastemachinery in less than 12 months and so developed a plan ofaction to save money on skip charges and make better use ofthe company’s waste wood.

Patrick bought a WT5 wood waste heater, a Genius 2/50briquette press and an automated bagging unit, He alsobought a second heater for another business, Premier PlasticParts, so that waste from the joinery company could be usedto heat the factory, saving around £5,000 on oil fired heatingcosts every winter.

Buying the equipment has also allowed Patrick to launchPremier Eco Fuels, which sells briquettes in the local area.Suitable for log burners, open fires, barbecues and gardenchimineas, the hardwood briquettes deliver a similar calorificvalue to coal but without the mess. The fully automated

system collects chippings from the joinery production processand stores them in a silo, before they travel by conveyor tothe briquette machine to be pressed into briquettes andpushed to the automatic bagging units. The 10kg bags aresealed and ready for sale.

“As a business decision, this was just common sense,”says Patrick. “We’ve invested in machines that make the bestuse of our waste wood, we have heating at no extra cost fortwo factories, we’ve got rid of skip charges and have a newbusiness selling briquettes.” Wood Waste Technology MDKurt Cockroft says too many companies are missing out onthe opportunity to convert wood waste into heating and/oran additional income stream: “One phone call to use is allthat is needed to start things moving in the right direction.”

As well as offering site survey, design, manufacture, installation and ongoing maintenance, Wood WasteTechnology services all types of wood waste heater andsupplies genuine spares at up to 60 percent cheaper than othersuppliers.
