About the AuthorsPeter Kaminsky caught his fi rst fi sh, a 30-pound grouper, on a party boat in the Florida Keys. It was the fi rst time he went fi shing, and that grouper won $45 for the big fi sh of the day. Kaminsky was hooked. He was Managing Editor of National Lampoon at the time. Soon after, he began to write for Outdoor Life, Field & Stream, and Sports Afi eld. In 1985, he began his regular contribu-tions to The New York Times “Outdoors” column. Kaminsky also wrote “The Underground Gourmet” in New York magazine and is a frequent contributor on food and dining in Food & Wine magazine. He has written numerous books on cooking and fi shing. His current book is Culinary Intelligence. As a televi-sion producer, Kaminsky is a creator and executive producer of The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor and The Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Kaminsky is a graduate of Princeton University and lives in Brooklyn.

Greg Schwipps fi shed the farm ponds around his home in Milan, Indiana, as soon as he could walk to them. He later earned an MFA at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and he now teaches creative writing at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. His work has appeared in outdoor maga-zines such as Outdoor Indiana, Indiana Game & Fish, and In-Fisherman. In 2010, his fi rst novel, What This River Keeps, won the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award in the Emerging Writer category. He lives with his wife, Alissa, and their two dogs in Wilbur, Indiana, and fi shes the White and Ohio rivers. www.gregschwipps.com

DedicationFrom Peter: For Lucian and Honeybunch.

From Greg: For my dad and grandfather, who made the time to take me fi shing.

Authors’ AcknowledgmentsFrom Peter: There are many people to thank, but fi rst an anonymous thank you to all the anglers — men and women who have shared their knowledge, companionship, and often their tackle with me over the years. I would espe-cially like to acknowledge the late Gene Calogiero (forgive me, Gene, I’m just guessing at the spelling, and you’re not around to correct me anymore), who fi rst taught me how to tie fl ies and fi sh the Esopus Creek; Nick Lyons for his generous counsel and support as I tried to learn how to write about this wonderful sport; John Culler for buying my fi rst fi shing piece in Outdoor Life; Duncan Barnes for years of putting up with my aging-hippy-writer’s ways; Susan Adams for making a home for me at The New York Times (and Joe Vecchione for getting me started there); Tom Akstens for being an exem-plar of a passionate and joyful angler; a debt beyond measure to the unsung Everglades guide Jack Allen, the most complete angler I know, who, by his example, has taught me that one can make a life out of angling, not rich in money, but face it, for most of us, the money isn’t going to happen anyway, so we might as well enjoy the fi shing.

From Greg: I should thank fi rst the fi ne folks at Wiley who welcomed me into the 2nd Edition of Fishing For Dummies: Lindsay Lefevere for presenting the opportunity, and Sarah Faulkner and Elizabeth Rea for expertly shepherding me through the writing process. Thanks to copy editor Susan Hobbs, and to technical reviewer Jeff Knapp for his great insights. The fi ne angler Mikey Hemkens helped out, as well. Any writer would be lucky to have such a team. Thanks, too, to Lucia Watson, the super-chef who graciously shared some recipes with us, and a tip of the fi shing cap to Doug Stange; he’s a great fi sh-erman and friend at In-Fisherman from way back.

I fi sh most often with my brothers, Tim and Ron, and our cousin, Ben. There are many lighthearted references to their prowess throughout this book. They’re not quite as inept as I make them seem, but as always, I had fun making jokes about them in print. We fi sh most often for catfi sh, a long-neglected and maligned fi sh — may they continue to fi nd their rightful place in anglers’ good graces everywhere. (Right, Dr. Pepper?) Finally, thanks to my fi shing partner, Alissa, who is a fi ne angler and a pretty danged good wife.

Introduction

Tens of millions of Americans fish, and they can’t all be crazy. Okay, maybe they can be. They’re crazy-passionate about fishing and all that

the hobby brings with it. They love the scenery, the camaraderie, the silence, the fight of the fish, the photographs of smiling people holding fish. They love to eat fish, or they love to fight the fish only to release it to fight again another day. They love to fish with their kids, grandparents, spouses, and friends. They love to be outdoors, near water. Don’t you need a hobby to feel this passionate about?

Practically anyone can fish. Young people can fish with adult supervision, and they learn great lessons about nature and the environment, among other things, while doing it. Seniors can fish, and many retire every year with plans to do just that. With the help of handicap-accessible ramps and piers, and even motorized reels, those with physical disabilities can fish. Fish pay no attention to race, sexual orientation, or religion. Thanks to millions of acres of public waterways, fishing can be enjoyed by the wealthy and not so rich alike. Fishing is one of the most welcoming outdoor activities around.

Fishing isn’t predictable, though (which, for some, is another reason to love it). Fishing takes you outdoors, and not just to the well-manicured and main-tained golf courses and ski slopes. Although you can fish in brightly lit and public places, you don’t have to, and some fishing finds you in some pretty wild places, indeed. You’re always fishing near water, of course, some of it deep and fast-flowing, and there are plenty of sharp hooks around. For that reason, it’s not a hobby to be taken lightly. You need to know what you’re doing, and this book helps you get there.

About This BookYou’re holding the 2nd Edition of Fishing For Dummies, which features much new and updated material that I (Greg) have added to the original, written by Peter Kaminsky. For example, I’ve added much of the material about boating, using circle hooks, and the pursuit of such fun quarry as catfish. That’s why throughout this book you’ll see “we” used often, or an “I” followed by one of our names in parentheses.

2 Fishing For Dummies, 2nd Edition

Just as your fishing gear and skills will evolve as you gain experience, the information in this book moves logically from more basic to advanced topics. You don’t have to start here and keep reading in order to make sense of anything you find. This isn’t a textbook — if a particular topic on the table of contents piques your interest, turn right to it; within every chapter we define terms and point you in the direction of any additional information that might help you located in another chapter.

Like all For Dummies books, this one aims to give you the information you need — say, to choose workable fishing gear, hook and land a fish, and know what to do with it once you land it — without burying you in obtuse language and terminology. You find here instead a casual and fun introduction to multi-species angling that we hope answers all your questions and encourages you to spend more time fishing.

Conventions Used in This BookWe use the following conventions throughout the text to make things consis-tent and easy to understand:

✓ New terms appear in italic and are closely followed by an easy-to-understand definition.

✓ Bold highlights the action parts of numbered steps and key words in bullet lists.

What You’re Not to ReadWe intend for this book to be a pleasant and practical read so that you can quickly find and absorb the fishing material you seek. However, we some-times can’t help going a little bit deeper or relaying information that expands on the basics. You might find this information interesting, but you don’t need it to understand what you came to that section to find.

When you see a Technical Stuff icon or a sidebar (a gray-shaded box of text), know that the information next to the icon or in the box is optional. You can lead a full and happy fishing life without giving it a glance. (But here’s a chance to make your fishing life even fuller and happier!)

3 Introduction

Foolish AssumptionsBefore we could write this book, we had to make some assumptions about who you, the reader, might be. We assume that you

✓ Have either fished before or want to start

✓ Want to have fun while fishing

✓ Are curious to know more about fish

✓ Desire to develop skills to fish in a variety of places

✓ Would like to know how to catch more than one kind of fish

✓ Seek to better understand the gear available

✓ Crave new information about fishing but don’t have endless time to devote to the hobby

How This Book Is OrganizedThe upcoming sections give you a sense of our coverage of fishing. You might notice that the parts of this book follow a natural progression from getting ready to fish, to actually fishing, to dealing with fish that have been caught. You might want to start at the beginning, as you acquire some gear, or maybe you’re ready to get a fish in the hand. Either way, don’t be shy about casting into the book at whatever part intrigues you.

Part I: Before the BiteFishing trips can be spontaneous and fun, but a little preparation goes a long way. Here, you find information about how to prepare for a fishing trip. We offer advice on how to dress, explore the water once you find it, and we even show illustrations of the fish swimming there! We also want you to stay safe while fishing, so we present a chapter on safety.

4 Fishing For Dummies, 2nd Edition

Part II: Gearing Up Without Going OverboardYou need some equipment to go fishing, starting with a rod and reel. But there’s a lot of gear out there, and some of it costs quite a bit. This part explains what you need, what you don’t need, and what you can wait to acquire later. We cover everything from circle hooks, just beginning to catch on in freshwater applications, to fishing from boats.

Part III: The End of Your Line: Enticing Fish with Bait, Lures, and FliesThe rod and reel matter, but the fish sees only what you present on the end of your line. This part walks you through your options, from completely natu-ral livebait to synthetic lures. Livebait can be presented in different ways; not every lure should be retrieved the same way, and not every fly imitates every insect. This chapter helps you decide what to use, and when.

Part IV: Now You’re FishingThis part is where the water meets the hook. We tell you how to rig your line to present your offering naturally, and how to make effective casts. Then we help you land the fish that can’t resist your mad skills. This part helps you tie on the hook, hook the fish, and then release the fish (if you choose) back into the water.

Part V: After the CatchIf you catch a fish that you intend to release, but want a decent photograph of it before it swims free, this part gives you advice on how to do that. If you decide to keep some fish to eat, we tell you how to clean and cook the fish. Recipes included here will help turn your fillets into wonderful, tasty meals.

Part VI: The Part of TensThis part provides two “Top Ten” lists (with a nod to fellow Hoosier David Letterman): ten things you can do to get young people involved in fishing, and ten things we wish someone had told us when we started fishing.

5 Introduction

Icons Used in This BookOne of the great things about a For Dummies book is the interactive icons used to highlight or illustrate a point. Here are the icons we’ve used through-out this book to draw your attention:

Some points are worth hammering home. When we reference a concept that we’ve discussed elsewhere or that is particularly important to your fishing experience, we use this icon.

We try to keep the information in this book light, but when we can’t resist delving deeply into a technique or piece of equipment, we use this icon to let you know that the information is skippable.

This icon sits next to any information that saves you time, money, or frustra-tion in your quest for better fishing.

Some actions can hurt the fish, your equipment, or you. We mark those with this dangerous-looking icon.

Where to Go From HereWe’ve organized this book so that you can either read it start to finish or dip into it here and there to find whatever specific information meets your needs. If you think you’re ready to pick out a new rod and reel, turn to Chapter 7 for advice on how to choose a good one. If you’d rather get tips on how to evalu-ate a lake you’ve never fished before, check out Chapter 3. If you’re pretty sure your first fish will deserve a spot on the wall, check out what we say about fiberglass replicas in Chapter 19. If you prefer traditional angling and traditional reading, turn the page and read this sucker straight through.

Enjoy Fishing For Dummies, 2nd Edition, and go fishing!

In this part . . .

The chapters in this part introduce you to the concept of fishing and many of the species of fish — both

freshwater and saltwater — you’ll attempt to catch. Covering both the basics, such as simple fish anatomy, to more complex principles, like how to evaluate fishing water you’ve never seen before, this part provides a lot of what you need to know before you begin fishing. A pre-pared angler is a successful one, and this part gets you ready.
