Please register for the session by contacting the parish office. Godparents and grandparents are also welcome. Avoid the need for a babysitter, plan to attend while still pregnant!

TAKE UP YOUR CROSS

A rab Christians of the Holy Land carved the olive wood crosses provided to our

parishioners on Ash Wednesday. In addition to the obvious symbolism of Christ’s sacrificial love, our brothers and sisters who live in Jeru-

salem, Bethlehem, the West Bank and the Palestinian territories, ask that we accept these crosses as a sign of solidarity with all those who struggle for freedom in the world today. Among the freedoms they seek are their God-given rights to live in safety, marry those they love, give birth to children, obtain an education, attend quality schools, choose a profession, secure meaningful jobs, hold public office, vote without fear, receive medical assistance and freely practice their faith. Each time you look at this simple cross, remember that the sacrifice required of many is still very real. Another suggestion in accepting this cross is to carry it on your person throughout the Lenten Season. If you can keep it in the same pocket as loose change, or in your purse near cash or credit cards, you might think twice about making a particular purchase and, instead, put that money aside for charity. You’ll be surprised how quickly those funds accumulate!

Our Lenten Journey

O ur Lenten journey began when we added our heartfelt “Amen” to the

injunction: “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” Acceptance of ashes is an out-ward sign of inward grace. What does this sign mean to you? Do you fully un-derstand that “Repent” means a willing-

ness to change your heart? Admittedly, most folks do not like change. We are at home with our habits, our routines and our lifestyles. We protect them and resist things that are new and different. We convince our-selves that we are just fine; after all, there are plenty of people who are in worse shape than us. We have managed to make it this far in life, so why bother to change now?

We might even have made peace with our weak-nesses, our shortcomings, our sins. The effort needed to change might seem overwhelming. We may have tried to change with little or no results. Even if we suc-ceeded, it might seem all too easy to fall back to our old ways. Before long, we may even convince our-selves that we are already as good as we can be!

Lent says that this approach just won’t work. God challenges us to change, not merely externally, but in our hearts. Do we believe that it is still possible to be-come a better version of ourselves? Just focus on one step, one area, one habit; You will be surprised what you can do with God’s grace! May this Lent provide the motivation you need to be a different person come Easter. God’s grace will provide!

~Excerpt adapted from Traveling Light by Fr. Thomas J. Connery

Lenten Order of Penitents

L ent has undergone many changes during the past two thousand years

of feasts and seasons. In addition to a period of personal penance and spiritual renewal, it is also a time of final prepara-tion for those who would enter the

Church through the Easter Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. In both cases, we realize that we are members of a larger church than just our local parish...In effect, we are companions on life’s journey with those who have gone before us, those here present and those yet to come. By joining the Order of Penitents 2014, you express your desire to take this season seriously and enable the Church to accompany you through the support of our prayers and works of charity. Your names will be placed upon the altar throughout this holy season. Cards are available in the church Commons or on the parish website. There is NO deadline to enroll.

Rice Bowls Catholic Relief Services is once again sponsoring its annual program that offers the opportunity to directly help hungry children. Our contributions are directed to those who so greatly suffer in the many refugee camps located in strife torn areas around the world where the poorest of the poor try their best to sur-vive. Please make contributions to the Rice Bowl throughout the Lenten season. It is intended to be a constant remind-er that every penny can help provide food for a poor child somewhere. Return the Bowls after Easter. They are avail-able at the doors of the church. To learn more about CRS, please visit their web-site at:

9:15am to 2:30pm, Madden Hall.

Cookies for Kairos “For I was Hungry and you fed me… I was in prison, and you visited me.”

Matthew 25:35-36

Why Cookies? One of the many demonstrations of love offered during a three day weekend is an outpour-ing of cookies. 7,000 Dozen cookies are distributed to the 1,500 prison residents, correctional officers and administrative staff. Included in each bag of cookies is a scripture message. Homemade cookies are a tangi-ble and vital expression of Christ’s love and witness from the outside Christian Community. If you are able to help, please contact Jim List at 367-7412 or 761-0220 so that he can arrange to pick them up. Cookies are needed no later than April 3, 2014.

Wearin’ of the Green Senior Luncheon

gain at only $6.00. Reservations close on Monday, March 10th at Noon. Guidry, Durscher and Kavanagh are our head chefs. Poster sign up will be in the Commons.

NEXT WEEK’S SPECIAL COLLECTION

The National Black and Indian Missions Collection, mandated by the III Plena-ry Council in 1884, embod-ies the Church’s concern

for evangelizing Black, American Indian, Eskimo and Aleut peoples in the United States. These needs exist through-out the country. Each year, bishops appeal for help in the great and growing task of parish evangelization. The col-lection is needed more than ever.

RCIA Rite of Sending

Several men and women, Catechu-mens (non-Baptized) and Candidates for Full Communion (those who have already been baptized in a non-

Catholic church) have been participating in the RCIA Pro-gram this year. This weekend, during the 9:30 Mass, we will accept their intentions and send them forth to the Cathedral in Charleston where, this afternoon, they will join in the Diocesan celebration of the "Rite of Election" and the "Call to Continuing Conversion." Please keep them in your prayers during this Lenten season as they prepare to enter the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.
