FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF DELAND DECEMBER, 2013

Christmas Hope for Everyone Phillips Brooks captured the heart of Christmas

with one line in the carol he wrote, O Little Town of Bethlehem. That line summarizes what Christmas means to us: “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.” In the little town of Bethlehem, God met the hopes of all humanity by birth of His Son, Jesus.

There was the hope of the Gentiles who didn’t have the advantage of an Old Testament and its prophecies. The Magi from Persia were eagerly looking for a Savior. Matthew described them in his Gospel.

“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him’ ” (Matthew 2:1-2).

The star they saw was a sign from God designed to alert these Gentiles to an event in Bethlehem that was intended for them as well. Researchers have discovered tablets in Persia dating from Jesus’ day. Those tablets predicted that a great king would be born in the West and justice, righteousness, peace and joy would mark his reign. They even had a name for him, Sosiosh. These men were astronomers who searched the sky for signs that would guide them. God provided the ultimate sign, a supernatural star that would lead them to the Baby who came to bring hope to the world.

Because they were Gentiles and pagans, we might not have invited them to participate in the birth of God’s Son. But, God responded to their hunger for truth. He still responds to spiritual hunger. The good news of Christmas is that God brought hope to all peo-ple, regardless of their background. That included Jews and Gentiles both. The angel’s announcement to the shepherds made that clear.

Hope is a powerful force in our lives and Christmas brings hope. Christmas is also for those who have been longing for a Savior. They may have been devout in their religious observance, but still understand that their only hope is for God to come to them. They have been waiting for God to show up. He has! This Christ-mas may God fill each of our hearts with hope.

What an exciting time of year to be the church in so many diverse and meaningful ways. I want to offer a story to serve as a single specific report about the ministry and success of Col-lective. The teenage son of a faithful First Church family felt compelled to invite a friend, formerly disinterested in and even against church, to come check out Collective. The Friend came and loved the warm welcome and open message of God's love and grace. Within a few weeks the friend invited his parents who have since become regulars at Collective - giving, serving, leading, and supporting in the growth of this congrega-tion. Within a short season of the family becoming invested at Collective, the younger sisters of the friend began attending and serving in the First Church youth group with Mark. All of this to say, we have so many diverse expressions of worship, theology, tradition and faith, but we're all one church! What an exciting and crystal clear picture of the way these congrega-tions link, are interdependent, feed and support one another.

We are beyond grateful for the incredible support and ongoing prayer as we lean into the manifestation of God's king-dom on earth as in heaven.

The following are a few ways you can be immediately and tangibly supportive of Collective this holiday season:

1) SHOP: As Thanksgiving and Black Friday approach, you're probably like me in apprehension about braving the in-sanity of Black Friday crowds. So, as you retreat to your online shopping, please do so in a way that supports the ministry of Collective. Pick us for your charity on Amazon.com and we will get .5% of your purchases. FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF DELAND DECEMBER, 2013

On Thursday, Dec. 5, Dr. John Gill will help us learn more about the Foster Care Program of the Methodist Children's Home. With some 50 foster homes to coordi-nate and support, the foster

parent team next door to the church provides vital services to kids that need an overdose of God's love. I hope your heart will compel you to come, listen, and enjoy dinner with other men. Dinner at 6:30. Make a reservation by calling the church office or email Terry at [email protected].

Moving into the new year, Cindy Guiles, Direc-tor of Wesley House at Stetson University, will speak to us on Thursday, Jan 16. She is employed by the Florida Conference to provide ministry to the youth at Stetson. Several of us are especially excited to have her come because we feel drawn to helping her efforts in this exciting minis-try. As always, dinner at 6:30.

We are working on doing a blood drive in the new year. Stay tuned for date information.

CHRISTMAS PARADE IS DEC. 7, 2:00 PM The United Methodist Men are busy pre-

paring for the parade on Dec. 7 at 2:00 pm. If you or your family would like to help in building the float, riding on the float, or help-ing at the food stand, email Don West at [email protected], call Don (624-7339), or Dave Dayton (985-5422) to volunteer for this fundraising activity.

Student Ministry

www.facebook.com/overflowuth

Here we are at the end of another calendar year. It has been a great year for the church as a whole and in the youth department. We have seen God do many great things through our lives and the life of this church this year. We have gone on mission trips in town, out of the state, and to another country where kids have served God and others to share His love. Students have made the choice to live for God in their daily lives!

The youth have a Progressive Dinner on Friday, December 20. This is one of the greatest events of the year. We go to three different houses to have a meal (the food is amazing!). One house might be appetizers, the next would be a dinner, and then the last one is dessert. Also, at the last house we get together and have a white elephant gift exchange. Each person brings a wrapped gift of $5 or less to exchange. Watching them plan and strategize to get the gift they want is hilarious. Please plan to come on out, it truly is a really fun time!

The youth will be participating with the Missions Auction and Dinner on Wednesday, December 11. If you want to bid on any item, please bring a little bit of cash to buy the items you might be interested in. We will also be helping serve. Part of the amount raised goes toward helping students go on missions trips each summer and experience what it is like to serve God in that way.

Our last event of the calendar year is the High School Ski Trip. We are going to Boone, NC, this year and skiing at Beech Mountain. The trip is January 2-5. A lot of the High Schoolers really look forward to this event and getting the chance to experience the different seasons. Encourage any high schooler that you know to go on the trip it truly is a great experience. Look for more information on our website or on the youth floor.

Our Sunday night small groups will not meet on December 22, 29, or January 5. They will resume again on January 12. Our Wednesday Night program will not meet on December 25 or January 1 because of the Christ-mas holiday. We will resume on January 8. We hope you all have a great holiday season!!!!

LEARN TO BALLROOM DANCE

Have you ever attended a wedding or been on a cruise and saw all those people dancing real dance steps and you wished you were one of them? Now is your chance to join the fun and not be a "wallflower". Beginning, Thursday, Feb-ruary 6, CI Miller and Muriel Chabot

will be teaching some very basic dance steps to a Foxtrot, Swing (Lindy, Jitterbug), Waltz and Rumba. We will teach only one dance a night and maybe just touch on one more. The following week will be review and we'll add another step to the routine. We are not teaching anything fancy so I'm sorry this won't qualify you for "Dancing with the Stars". However, after learning a few simple steps you will feel comfortable and confident to get on a dance floor, join the crowd and have fun. Remember, people do not watch mediocre dancers; they only watch the really good ones.

Gals, encourage your men, most men say they have "two left feet" or they "don't like to dance" but deep down, in they don't want to be embarrassed. CI has had lessons and has been teaching me, so if I can learn - so can you. We will begin with a short demonstration then line up with girls on one side of the room and boys on the other, the girls will follow what I do, the men will follow CI. Then you will do the steps with your partner. There is no pressure, just a good time with a lot of laughs.

This is not exclusively for couples. Singles are invited to attend also, we just cannot guarantee a dance partner for you. The plan is to meet from 7 to 8 p.m., either in the "Well" of the Education Building or the LEC gym. The cost will be $2.00 each. Sign-up now, bring your friends, this is open to members and friends. In the meantime think "slow, slow, quick, quick. See, already you know the step to the Foxtrot. I'm looking forward to seeing you in February.
