Struggle for SurvivalSometimes, disaster does not only strike once but twice in the same day. Joe Simpson and Simon Yates had just finished climbing the highest mountain in the Peruvian Andes and were on their way down the slope, when their terrible struggle to survive began.

The two experienced climbers had decided to tie each other to a rope as they made their way down the mountain. At some point, Simpson was sliding down an icy cliff when he slipped and broke his leg.

They decided that they had no option but to continue as before. So, Yates remained above, holding onto the rope as he lowered Simpson down the mountain. This idea seemed to be going well until it got dark and heavy snowfall made it impossible for them to see. At some point, Simpson went over a cliff and was hanging in midair. Yates continued to hold onto the rope until the weight of his friend became too much to endure. At the same time, the rope was becoming icy and his hands were freezing.

Feeling faint from dehydration and weak from the cold, Yates dug himself a cave and waited until morning came. Finally, when daylight came, Simpson managed to crawl and hop his way out of there. Three days later, exhausted and in great pain, he reached their camp.

Luckily, they had both managed to survive and Simpson went on to write a book called “Touching the Void” which later became a movie. Many have criticized Yates’ decision to cut the rope, but also admit that every situation is different and only the people involved know how and what actually happened.

Plan

Para 1:

set the scene: who/where (my sister and I/Greece)

when/weather/what happened (last August, hot afternoon, something happened on a bus trip)

Para 2:

events in order they happened (riding along enjoying the view, something crashed into the back of the bus,

people screamed, a man exited the bus to see, I followed)

climax event (jeep had crashed into bus, mother and 2 children in jeep, I called emergency services)

Para 3:

what happened in the end (emergency services came, everyone OK, another bus picked us up)

how character(s) felt (everyone felt relieved)
