Evangelical Lutheran Church

W elcome! Guests, we’re so happy you are able to worship with us online. We pray, especially during these difficult days, that you find peace and strength in the Lord and his Word. We look forward to any opportunity to meet you in the future.

June 7, 2020 The First Sunday after Pentecost

Path for Worship: Morning Praise- Printed Hymns: 195, 240, 334

Today’s Worship The Bible clearly teaches one God in three distinct Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three Persons of the Trinity are fully God, in whom alone is our beginning redemption and restoration to everlasting holiness and happiness.

About the Path for Worship “Morning Praise” is a version of liturgy that is based on the historic service called “Matins.” Joined to Christ, our risen Lord, we glorify God as we rise to the activities of this new day.

Prayer Before Worship Dear Triune God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - thank you for showing who you really are in the Bible. Forgive every time I’m tempted to make up my own god in my own image. Help me to trust in you. Amen.

Gather MORNING HYMN Red Hymnal #195 | Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty

As the introduction to the hymn is played, all stand. Entrance Hymn In 325 AD, Church leaders convened in the town of Nicaea in present day Turkey to formulate a consensus of belief and practice among Christians. What resulted was the Nicene Creed, one of the pillars of church doctrine. The primary function of this creed was to proclaim Christianity’s firm belief in the Trinity. This creed inspired Reginald Heber to write this hymn.

Based on Psalm 70:1, these words verbalize the heartfelt need of gathered believers as we call for the help of the Lord. With these words we begin our worship of the God of justice, truth, and mercy.

Gather We gather together around the Means of Grace - the Gospel in Word and Sacrament.

The Word

FIRST READING Genesis 1:1 - 2:3 (EHV)

The Creation of the World. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2The earth was undeveloped and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

3God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. 5God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning—the first day.

6God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, and let it separate the water from the water.” 7God made the expanse, and he separated the water that was below the expanse from the water that was above the expanse, and it was so. 8God called the expanse “sky.” There was evening and there was morning—the second day.

9God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear,” and it was so. ˻The waters under the sky gathered to their own places, and the dry land appeared.˼ 10God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathering places of the waters he called “seas.” God saw that it was good. 11God said, “Let the earth produce plants—vegetation that produces seed, and trees that bear fruit with its seed in it—each according to its own kind on the earth,” and it was so. 12The earth brought forth plants, vegetation that produces seed according to its own kind, and trees that bear fruit with its seed in it, each according to its own kind, and God saw that it was good. 13There was evening and there was morning—the third day.

The First Reading is typically taken from the Old Testament and occasionally from the Book of Acts. This lesson often contains events or prophecy that find fulfillment in the Second and Gospel Lessons.

We sit at the feet of Jesus, as Mary did, to hear The Word (Luke 10:42) and apply it to life. Here is time for meditating, reflecting, strengthening, forgiveness, instruction and response.

14God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night, and let them serve as markers to indicate seasons, days, and years. 15Let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth,” and it was so. 16God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17God set these lights in place in the expanse of the sky to provide light for the earth, 18to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19There was evening and there was morning - the fourth day.

20God said, “Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds and other winged creatures fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their own kind, and every winged bird according to its own kind. God saw that it was good. 22God blessed them when he said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23There was evening and there was morning—the fifth day.

24God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their own kind, livestock, creeping things, and wild animals according to their own kind,” and it was so. 25God made the wild animals according to their own kind, and the livestock according to their own kind, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its own kind. God saw that it was good.

26God said, “Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that crawls on the earth.”

27God created the man in his own image. In the image of God he created him. Male and female he created them.

28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29God said, “Look, I have given you every plant that produces seed on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that bears fruit that produces seed. It will be your food. 30To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of

the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning—the sixth day.

1The heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them. 2On the seventh day God had finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had been doing. 3God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it he rested from all his work of creation that he had done. Stand

VERSE OF THE DAY Psalm 119:105 (EHV)

Alleluia. Your words are a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.

Alleluia. HYMN OF THE DAY Red Hymnal #240 | Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise GOSPEL Matthew 28: 16-20 (EHV)

Go and Gather Disciples.

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. 17When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some hesitated because they were uncertain. 18Jesus approached and spoke to them saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and gather disciples from all nations by baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and by teaching them to keep all the instructions I have given you. And surely I am with you always until the end of the age.” Be seated

The Hymn of the Day is representative of the best of the Christian Church’s hymnody. It is specially assigned to this day for its rich content, and its connection to the Day’s Gospel Lesson.

Gospel The congregation stands for the reading of the Gospel. (In the past soldiers put down their weapons and kings removed their crowns when the Gospel was read.) Christ - his life, his words of law and gospel, his suffering and death, his resurrection, his ascension, his assignment to his Church, his promise to return - is the center of the Gospel. The faithful have waited for this moment, this reading. They stand in reverence.

Walter C. Smith based this hymn text on 1 Timothy 1:17. This strong text praises God, who created and sustains the lives of all his creatures. The text focuses on the Creator of the universe, the invisible God whose visible works in nature testify to his glory and majesty.

MESSAGE Matthew 28:16-20 (EHV)

“March On, My Soul; Be Strong!” In the Lord’s authority In God’s Gospel power

After the Message, stand. WE PRAISE YOU, OH GOD Te Deum

The Message is the Word of God, proclaiming the living voice of the Gospel to God’s redeemed people. The preacher is the appointed representative who illuminates the Scripture for the congregation and applies it to our contemporary situation. He is neither lecturer nor entertainer, but a link through whom the Holy Spirit brings law and gospel to bear upon the hearts and minds of the worshiper and enlivens their faith and life. Te Deum “You Are God, We Praise You” (also called the Te Deum) is the congregation’s sung response to the gospel message heard in the Sermon. The Te Deum is an ancient and majestic canticle of the Christian faith, a mighty hymn of praise to God.

OFFERING God has so richly blessed us in every way. Christ’s love empowers us to respond so that we can “...be generous in every way, which produces thanksgiving to God.” (2 Corinthians 9:11 EHV) Even as you continue to make use of E-giving, “snail mail” (to Financial Secretary Roger Flashinski) and drop-off at church to support our collective ministry at New Life, we are encouraged to give generously to those in need, especially during these difficult days. Be confident of this: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6 EHV) LORD, HAVE MERCY Kyrie Lord, Have Mercy

“Kyrie” is the Greek word for “Lord.” This prayer section of the service begins with a cry for mercy to the Lord in the morning hour. A three-fold plea to the triune God, it is the oldest known canticle (church song) in the Christian Church.

Lord’s Prayer The Lord’s Prayer was given by our Savior to his Church in response to the disciples’ request to be taught to pray. See Matthew 6:9-13. The conclusion to the prayer, also known as the Doxology, was a common conclusion to ancient prayers. Prayer for Grace The historic Prayer for Grace has been used during Matins (Morning Praise) since the 5th century.

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name,

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Special prayers and intercessions may be offered.

Go in Peace

PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Almighty God and Father, dwelling in majesty and mystery, filling and renewing all creation by your eternal Spirit, and manifesting your saving Grace through our Lord Jesus Christ: in mercy cleanse our hearts and lips that, free from doubt and fear, we may ever worship you, one true Immortal God, with your Son and the Holy Spirit. PRAYER FOR GRACE M: O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us

safely to this new day. Defend us with your mighty power, and grant that this day we neither fall into sin nor run into any kind of danger; and in all we do, direct us to what is right in your sight, through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

C: Amen.

CLOSING HYMN Red Hymnal #334| Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Blessing The Apostolic Blessing comes from the last verse of 2 Corinthians. With all the authority of Jesus which He assigned to His holy apostles we place the Name of the triune God on His people. From God we receive every good and perfect gift as He guides and guards our lives to heaven. Enjoy God’s blessing!

BLESSING 2 Corinthians 13:11 - 14 (EHV)

Farewell.

M: Finally, brothers, rejoice. Set things in order. Be encouraged. Agree with one another. Be at peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. 12Greet one another with a holy kiss. 13All the saints greet you. 14The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

Closing Hymn Also known as the Doxology, Bishop Thomas Ken wrote this hymn in an age when hymns were only based on the psalms. A fiery and accusatory preacher, Ken held positions in two royal courts before being imprisoned for what was called his rebelliousness. It is called the Doxology because Ken used these words to end each of the three hymns he wrote for daily use: Morning, Evening and Midnight. The Morning Hymn and the Evening Hymn can be found in the Red Hymnal #582 and #592, respectively.
