First Presbyterian Church Experiencing the Joy of God’s Love in Action!
January - February 2020

February
Happy New Year, First Presbyterian Church!
Friends, it is with joy I write to you this wintery day as we begin a new decade
together. It amazes me how quickly time indeed does go by. It seems only
yesterday that we gathered for my first Sunday as your pastor, and yet on
Valentine’s Day we will mark 5 years of ministry together. Over the last five
years we have seen many changes in our church and in the Pontiac community
and through them all First Presbyterian Church has continued to be a place
where the people of our community and each of us have found a home, the heart
of God, and people who are willing to walk with them on the journeys of life.
As we move into this next year in the life of First Presbyterian (February 24
marks our 196th Anniversary), I believe we will experience many continued
blessings from God. We will see our community continue to grow as new
restaurants and businesses join the Pontiac family. We will find new people to
do ministry beside and God will continue to guide us in our ministries with the
residents of Pontiac and our church members and friends – whether children
and families, adult ministries, mission and compassion ministries or fellowship
opportunities for all. We will continue to experience the blessings of God
together.
Often in church we have the hills and valleys just like in life. However, right
now I have been feeling a great sense of God at work in our midst. There is an
excitement in my heart as God continues to lead us and the people of God here
at FPC. God is listening and wants us to share the joyous spirit of God with
others. I love watching our choir members enjoy one another and laugh and
smile as God continues to use them. I love watching our children who love
showing off their church. Did you know that they give secret tours of the
church from a kid’s eye view? I’ve been on one of the them and it was
wonderful.
Philippians 4:4-7 NRSV, speaks about rejoicing: “Rejoice in the Lord always;
again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord
is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And
the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.”
My friends, I encourage you to embrace the blessings and joy that we receive
through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. May this be a year of joy and blessing for
you and your family and may we be content and full of peace in our hearts as a
disciple of Christ.
Many Blessings upon you all,

♫ “Notes”♪ To The Congregation Happy New Year to All !!!
I have some more news about our lovely pipe organ. Yes,
we got the pipe back in 2019, but it still isn’t playable,
so… I am glad to report that the Holden Pipe Organ
Company will be able to complete the essential repair that
is needed. It will be done with the spring tuning and for a
reasonable price.
I hope that all of you were here to HEAR both of our Chancel Choir and the
Heritage Ringers during the Advent-Christmas season. Both groups did an
excellent job!
That’s all for now, see you next time.

Souper Bowl of Caring
In 1990, a simple prayer inspired a small youth group in Columbia, South Carolina to tackle hunger. They
collected $5700 for local hunger-relief charities and launched a grassroots campaign. They transformed the Big Game into a nation-wide movement inspiring people to give locally and make a collective impact on hunger.
Souper Bowl of Caring Mission Statement:
Empowering youth and uniting communities to tackle hunger using the energy of the Big Game.
Vision Statement:
Transforming the Big Game into a nation-wide movement inspiring people to give locally and make a
collective impact on hunger.
We believe:
The idea for the Souper Bowl of Caring is a gift from God
Young people have the ability to serve and should be
given opportunities to lead their communities in
helping others
Every dollar collected through Souper Bowl of Caring should be donated directly to a charity
selected by each participating group
People of all backgrounds and beliefs can work
together
Hunger and poverty have a negative impact on
individuals and the communities in which they live, yet there is joy in serving and giving to those in need
The excitement and energy surrounding the Super Bowl can be used to engage young people in service
while producing lasting hope for all people
On Sunday, February 2nd, we will be participating in the Souper Bowl of Caring. We ask everyone to
donate $1 or 1 can of soup (or more!) per person. All donations of food will be used in our shopping cart
pantry and all money donated will be used to purchase food for the same. For more information, visit
www.tacklehunger.org
Deacons Doins’
Thanks to the generosity of the members of our congregation and other
generous souls, the Deacons were able to provide gift baskets to 16 families
this past Christmas season. The baskets included food and personal items for
the entire family as well as hats, mittens and Christmas gifts for the children in
each family. The Deacons and other volunteers spend many hours collecting
names of those in need, shopping, wrapping, packing and distributing the
baskets. We are truly blessed to be able to continue serving our local
community.
