MORNING WORSHIP SERVICE

October 16, 2011 – 10:00 a.m. ORGAN PRELUDE: “Diapason Voluntary” Gordon Young (1919-1998)

*[Please remain standing for the ―Presentation of the Flame‖]

CALL TO WORSHIP

Sing a new song all the earth.

Sing to the Lord and

praise the Holy Name.

Proclaim salvation day after day.

Declare God’s glorious deeds

to all the earth.

*HYMN: “Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones” PH 30

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*PRAYER OF INVOCATION

God, make us instruments of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let us sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, faith.

Where there is despair, hope.

Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,

Grant that we may not so much seek

to be consoled as to console,

to be understood as to understand,

to be loved as to love.

For it is in the giving, that we receive;

It is in the pardoning that we are pardoned,

It is in the dying that we are born again

to eternal life. Amen.

*THE LORD'S PRAYER (trespasses) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as

we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us

from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI

―Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was

in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen"

SCRIPTURE READING: Genesis 3:1-13, 21-22

ANTHEM: “Sing to the Lord a New Song” Robert C. Lau (b.1943)

People and tongues of every nation sing to the Lord a new song.

Bring him a song of jubilation, sing to the Lord a new song.

All God‘s creatures, old men and children, voices raised in hymns of love.

He crowns the humble with salvation. Sing to the Lord a new song.

Mountains and hills and all creation sing to the Lord a new song.

Join in a hymn of adoration. Sing to the Lord a new song. Praise him!

Praise His name, sing ―Alleluia!‖ Praise him for his mighty deeds.

This is our song, our supplication: ―Sing to the Lord a new song.‖

Praise him, shining stars, and praise him highest heavens.

Oh, all kings and princes praise his holy name.

Angels above make melody to him.

Now lift your voice, lift up your heart, and sing!

Come, Christians all, now raise your voices, sing a new song.

Praise and thanksgiving be your choices, sing to the Lord a new song.

Sound the trumpet, play on the lute and harp; dance your dance, and shout for joy.

Make music now as heaven rejoices, sing to the Lord a new song.

SCRIPTURE READING: Matthew 22:15-22

Living God, be known to us through our prayers,

both those spoken and those unspoken.

as near as our breath,

yet mysteriously hidden,

seemingly distant.

Help us to seek you as you are seeking us.

Speak your word of power and

make us true disciples of Christ.

Transform us through your fiery Spirit.

All glory be to you as you guide us and

chide us to be one with your purposes. Amen.

Let us pray…

OFFERTORY SENTENCE

OFFERTORY ANTHEM: “If You But Trust in God to Guide You” Based on hymn tune Wer Nur Den Lieben Gott

by Georg Nevmark (1621-1681)

arranged by David Cherwien (b.1957)

Rebecca Shrimpton, soprano

lf you but trust in God to guide you, With hopeful heart through all your ways,

You will find strength, with God beside you, To bear the worst of evil days;

For those who trust God‘s changeless love Build on the rock that will not move,

What gain is there in futile weeping, In helpless anger and distress?

lf you are in God‘s care and keeping, In sorrow will God love you less?

For Christ who took for you a cross Will bring you safe through every loss.

Be still, be still, and wait God‘s pleasure In cheerful hope, with heart content,

Trusting that grace which knows no measure Will be unbounded Love be sent;

Nor doubt our inmost wants are clear To One who holds us always near.

Sing, pray, and keep God‘s ways unswerving; Offer your service faithfully,

Page 5: FIRST PARISH CHURCH, CONGREGATIONALOct 10, 2011  · Speak your word of power and make us true disciples of Christ. Transform us through your fiery Spirit. All glory be to you as you

And trust God‘s word, though undeserving, There find the truth to set you free;

God will not fail to guide and bless Those who embrace God‘s faithfulness.

*DOXOLOGY "Praise God from whom all blessings flow, Praise God all creatures here below,

Praise God above ye heavenly host, Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen."

It Couldn’t Be Done

Somebody said that it couldn‘t be done,

But, he with a chuckle replied

That ―maybe it couldn‘t‖, but he would be one

Who wouldn‘t say ‗til he‘d tried.

So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin

On his face. If he worried he hid it.

Then started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn‘t be done, and he did it.

Somebody scoffed: ―Oh, you‘ll never do that;

At least no one ever has done it‖;

But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,

And the first thing he knew he begun it.

With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,

Without any doubting or quiddity,

He started to sing as he tackled the thing

That couldn‘t be done, and he did it.

There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,

There are thousands to prophesy failure;

There are thousands to point out to you, one be one,

The dangers that wait to assail you.

But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,

Just take off your coat and go to it;

Just start to sing as you tackle the thing

That ―cannot be done‖, and you‘ll do it.
