SAM CHAPMAN P.S. TIMETABLE CHANGE

We are implementing a change to our internal timing of events at SCPS next year. In the past, we have played O’Canada and listened to announcements first thing in the morning. Also, traditionally, stu-dents have been eating their snacks in class just before the recess time. Next year, we are going to have both events take place at the same time. Starting in September, O’Canada, announcements and snack time will occur every day at 9:35 am…just before the recess bell. This will allow instruction in the classrooms to commence imme-diately at 8:05am every morning. Students begin to enter Sam Chapman at 8:02 am, after the first bell, so that they are in class and ready to learn at 8:05 am. We strongly encourage all parents to make sure their child is at school by the first bell at 8:00 am. The second bell rings at 8:05 am indicating that students are late if they arrive after 8:05 am. Thank you for your co-operation.

SUMMERTIME SUN SAFETY There really is nothing quite like the excitement of summer holidays being just around the corner. A time for planning vacations, outdoor adventures and days packed full of fresh air and lots of sunshine. While relishing your time outdoors this summer, remember to always practice healthy sun exposure and sun protection habits.

The sun is a beautiful thing. It has the ability to boost our mood when we feel down and revitalize our immune system. Research shows that sun exposure can be an effective treatment method for certain illnesses, and provides an excellent source of Vitamin D – an important vitamin in the absorption of calcium in the body for the growth of strong bones and teeth.

While basking in the sunshine might make us feel good, it is important to remember that lengthy exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays can be linked to health concerns such as: heat exhaustion & heat stroke, sunburns, skin cancer, eye damage and premature aging.

Hence, it is essential to be mindful about proper sun protection. Did you know that much of the sun’s lasting damage is done before the age of 18? As we get older, we can begin to see just what that damage looks like, often times making us more aware then of the need for proper sun protection. This is why developing healthy sun habits is so important at a young age.

Tips for Practicing Sun Protection If you or your family are going to plan some fun outside this summer, practice the following sun protection tips, helpful for both kids and adults. Remember, the younger the child, the more important it is to protect them from overexposure due to the sensitive nature of their skin.

Try to plan outdoor activities when the sun’s rays aren’t strongest (between 11am-4pm).

Be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses at all times, or take an umbrella to always have a method of providing shade.

Remember that water and sand reflect the sun’s rays making them stronger, so pack a t-shirt for pool days to wear over a bathing suit and always reapply sunscreen after each swim.

Wear only a broad-spectrum sunscreen that is UV-A and UV-B protected, is waterproof and sweat proof, has an SPF of 30 or more – remember to also diligently reapply every 2 hours.

Make a plan for rest periods in well-shaded areas along with hydration breaks to refresh the body.

Always cover up with breathable, lightweight, light-coloured fabrics like cotton or linen.

Proper Sunscreen Application As a general rule, always apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before heading outdoors to ensure it has properly absorbed into the skin. After applying it to the body, double check that you haven’t missed your ears, nose, neck, tops of feet, back of shoulders and around the hairline.

For an average-size child, the rule of thumb is that approximately one ounce of sunscreen will cover the body from head to toe.

What is the UV Index? The UV Index is a useful guide that uses a graduated scale ranging from 0-10 which forecasts the harmfulness of the sun’s rays for the day - zero being the lowest and ten being the highest and most harmful. Get in the habit of checking your local weather station for updates on the UV index, or consulting Environment Canada’s UV Index online (https://www.ec.gc.ca/uv/default.asp?lang=En&n=DCF1C20A-1) before planning your outdoor activities. On the whole, we all know that being outdoors and being active is good for you. This summer, take time to remember to build a healthy habit of practicing sun safety for not only this season, but all year around.

SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM

Through a directive from the Ministry of Education and Training, all School Boards

are to implement a safe arrival program in their schools. The York Region District

School Board has been working very closely with the York Regional Police to ensure

the safety of our students.

The safe arrival program at Sam Chapman P.S. depends on parents to notify the

office in the event of their child’s late arrival or absence. All parents and guardians

are reminded to please call the school (905) 472-8374 and leave a message if your

child is going to be absent or late. Please leave your child’s name (spell if helpful),

teacher’s name and the reason for the absence. This phone operates 24 hours a day so

please call the moment you know that your child will be absent or late.

If a student is not in school and the school office has not received notification from

the parents, the school will take the following steps:

Step One: Call the student’s home. If there is no answer the school will,

Step Two: Call the parents at work and cell phone. If there is no response the school will,

Step Three: Call the emergency contact person. If the contact person cannot be reached and/or

does not know where the student is then

Step Four:

The school will notify the York Regional Police that a child is missing and they

will investigate.

Student Absence—Please call the Office ASAP (24hr answering machine)

for every student absence and/or late.

STUDENT SAFETY IS OUR #1 PRIORITY

STUDENT DROP OFF & PICK UP:

We encourage all of our students to walk to school where possible or take the bus to and from

school where eligible. We have approximately 10 buses that come into and go out of the school

every day. It is critical that we follow the procedures outlined below to avoid putting students

in danger.

KISS and RIDE:

We ask those parents who drive their children to drop them off on Alfred Paterson Drive (‘Kiss

and Ride’) where we will have a teacher on duty from 7:50am - 8:05am who will direct the stu-

dents to the safe area behind the school. We only allow children to exit the vehicles from the

right-hand lane, beside the curb. Exiting on the driver side of the vehicle potentially puts them in

harms way with passing traffic. The left lane is only used once your child has entered or exited

the vehicle and you are ready to drive away. Please have students ready to exit the car on their

own with their bags. When you enter the Kiss and Ride lane, please pull your vehicle up as far as

possible to allow for other vehicles to enter. There is absolutely NO PARKING in the Kiss and

Ride lane. If you need to walk your child into school then please park on the street. Please do not

drop your child off on Delray Drive as it is not supervised.

STAFF PARKING LOT:

Please do not enter the staff parking lot until after 8:05 am.

BUS LOOP:

Please note the bus loop is for buses ONLY (no cars may enter)

TEACHER SUPERVISION:

Teacher supervision is available outside in the morning from 7:50am—8:05am There is also school

bus supervision from 2:35pm—2:50pm. Please do not drop off your child prior to 7:50am as

there is no supervision. If you are picking up your child after school, please be here by 2:35pm. It

is also important to be at your child’s bus stop early. If an emergency happens, please inform us

and we will have your child wait for you in the office. Please make sure that the office is notified

of any last minute changes in your child’s pick- up routine. On rainy days, students enter the

school from the rear entrance and wait in their designated hallway.

If you require any information on bussing, please visit the website at www.schoolbuscity.com

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children safe!
