On 20/12/1793, John offered a reward for the return of a lost mule to Fellowship Hall and advertised the sale of goats and kids then on 23/5/1794 offered a reward for the return of a cow and calf (see note iv). Annual accounts for 1793/4 and 1795/6 for Fellowship Hall Plantation in Jamaica, which John and Charles still then jointly owned showed annual turnover figures of £812/4/5 and £1,312/11/2 respectively and that the crops of the plantation were coffee and ginger rather than sugar, as might have reasonably been assumed (see note i). In 1795, John and Amelia Frances sold two pieces of land to Charles and their sister- in-law, Phoebe. One was a piece of land forty by forty eight feet in Kings Street and Port Royal Street, Kingston, that had become theirs by an agreement of 1789. The other was a half share in a piece of land and store on Port Royal Street (the other part being already owned by them), which had been acquired in 1783. These Charles and Phoebe then sold to another brother, Jeremiah, for 5 shillings each piece and the payment of one peppercorn rent for one year. Charles and Phoebe sold other properties they owned in these places to Jeremiah for £1,000 (see note i). During his time in Jamaica, John had other property dealings as follows:- 1783: purchase from John Nasmyth 1786: purchase from George Sieben 1791: purchase with Charles of a slave from John Simpson (see note v). John was buried on 27/7/1798 in St Andrew, Jamaica. £500. He left his son, John, £2,000 in certificates to set him up in business with Messrs Steel and Thompson,Merchants of Kingston. His son, John, and father, John, were two of the three Executors charged with utilizing the rest of his estate for his children, John, Amelia and Ann Elizabeth. In 1789, Charles sold his half share of land and property on a site of thirty feet by sixty-two feet on Port Royal Street, Kingston, to his brother, John, for £300. John already owned the other half-share and they had acquired this holding in 1782 although the deeds for that purchase do not appear to have survived In 1790 Charles, who is recorded as a merchant, acquired land and property on a 33[1/2] acre site in St Andrew parish from John and Charlotte Bignall and Robert Wetherell During his time in Jamaica, Charles had other dealings for which deeds are held by the Jamaican Archives as follows:- 1790: purchase of slave from Duncan Fraser 1791: purchase with John of a slave from John Simpson (see note iv). In 1791, Charles was recorded as a vestryman of St Andrew, Jamaica Whilst in Jamaica, Charles had a relationship with Anne Ivey, described as a quadroon/free mulatto woman. Charles appears to have left Anne and Jamaica in the early 1790s (and before June 1793) to return to Bristol. He brought all their children with him albeit in two batches, possibly because William was too young to bring when he brought the other four. On 4/6/1793 Charles married the widow, Phoebe Hill, in Bristol St John Bedminster. This was five months before the four children he had had with Anne Ivey were baptized and the baptismal parish records note that he was a merchant. In 1793/4 he was also recorded as a merchant of 18 Somerset Square, St Mary Redcliffe Though Charles maintained business interests in Jamaica, he appears to have been winding them down. Annual accounts for 1793/4 and 1795/6 for Fellowship Hall Plantation in Jamaica, which Charles and John jointly owned showed annual turnover figures of £812/4/5 and £1,312/11/2 respectively and that the crops of the plantation were coffee and ginger rather than sugar, as might have reasonably been assumed . In 1795 Charles was recorded as a hosier and he and his wife, Phoebe, acquired two pieces of land from his brother, John, and sister-in-law, Amelia Frances. One was a piece of land forty by forty eight feet in Kings Street and Port Royal Street, Kingston, that had become theirs by an agreement of 1789. The other was a half share in a piece of land and store on Port Royal Street (the other part being owned by John and Amelia Frances), which had been acquired in 1783 from William Hall. These Charles and Phoebe then sold to his brother, Jeremiah, for 5 shillings each piece and the payment of one peppercorn rent for one year. Charles and Phoebe sold other properties they owned in these places to Jeremiah for £1,000 Details of Phoebe's death/burial have not yet been found. In 1801 Charles was a merchant living at 9 Somerset Place and on 9/5/1801 he married Rebecca Colston of Barton in Bristol St James whereupon he was recorded as a sugar refiner. Rebecca is believed to have been a descendant of the famous Bristol slave trader and philanthropist, Edward Colston . This marriage was shortlived as Rebecca died in Somerset Street and was buried on 7/9/1802 in Bristol St James. In 1801, Gravenor and Mais were recorded as sugar refiners of Rosemary Street In 1803, the deeds of Quakers Friars Sugar House, Rosemary Street, show occupation by Gravenor and Mais. However, this partnership was dissolved in 1803 From 1803 to 1813, Charles was a sugar refiner at Traitors Bridge Sugar House initially in partnership with Josiah Thomas. However, this partnership too was dissolved in 1806 Charles tried to sell the Sugar House in 1806 and 1813, and in 1814 it was conveyed to his brother Jeremiah but the freehold remained in Mais hands until 1830. The eighteenth century was a period of growth for Bristol's sugar trade. It is known that from 1708, when there were eight sugar houses, until 1760 a dozen more had been established, many but not all having a life of a hundred years or so before falling victim either to difficult trading conditions in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars or to fire. The dozen new houses included Traitors Bridge, Great George Street (1750- 1815) under the Battersby, Sweeting, Hull, Reilly and Rogers families. However, as already indicated the era of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars proved to be a difficult time.Wars always damaged the sugar trade but in addition the ever-growing larger ports of Liverpool and London offered increasingly sharp competition while the introduction of steam processes in 1811 meant that refineries demanded greater capital investment and the weaker ones were driven to the wall. Between 1794 and 1824 seven sugar houses closed, including Traitors Bridge. On the other hand it was possible to survive the war years as was shown by two houses, one of which was Quakers Friars which opened in 1777 and survived until 1840 In 1807 Charles was living at 8 Clare Street On 26/1/1809 Charles, who was now a hat manufacturer of St James Place, Kingsdown, married the widow, Elizabeth Corn Bennett in Bristol St James. This marriage produced three children.

In 1813 Charles lived at 33 St James Place then in 1814 he was recorded as a hat manufacturer of 38 High Street, residence Westbury . The hat making trade flourished in the Bristol area in about 1790 with felt and beaver hats being made in cottages around Frampton Cotterell, Oldland, Soundwell and Kingswood and transported to the West Indian sugar plantations. Charles is therefore thought more likely to have been a seller or merchant in hats rather than a manufacturer . Charles appears to have left Bristol for Jersey and by 1815 was sufficiently well established in Jersey to be included on General Don's Muster - a listing of local militia who would have been the island's prime defensive force in the event of the war with France reaching the Channel Islands Charles died in Jersey and was buried on 19/9/1823 at St Saviour's Before his death, Charles had owned messuages, tenements or dwelling houses, warehouses and premises in Bristol in George Street, Richards Court, Rivers Street and Nans Lane, which he had also sold to his brother Jeremiah. Jeremiah then left an income from these properties to Charles' widow, Elizabeth Corn and their three children . It is possible that Jeremiah did this because he was appointed trustee in Charles' will and was thereby fulfilling his obligations. However, it has not been possible to find a will left by Charles. Elizabeth Pownall (nee BENNETT) was born about 1775 in Macclesfield or Somerset. She was born about 1775 in Macclesfield. 1 She lived in Westbury Hill, Westbury- on -Trym, Gloucestershire in 1841.32 [32 In 1851 she was in Annuitant.30 She lived in 7 Grove Place, Westbury-on-Trym in 1851.30 She died in 1852 in Redland. She was also known as Elizabeth Corn BENNETT. Charles MAIS and Elizabeth Pownall (nee BENNETT) had the following children: i. Frederick Charles MAIS was born on 18 Apr 1812 in Bristol. He died on 11 Feb 1902 in Barnwood Gloucestershire.42

ii. Amelia MAIS was born in 1814 in Marchmarydon, Gloucester. She was christened on 6 Oct 1814 in Bristol, St. James. She lived in Plympton Lunatic Asylum, Plympton, Devon in 1881.48 She died on 23 Sep 1889 in Plympton, Devon. She signed a will in London. 21 iii. Rebecca MAIS, born on 10 Dec 1809, Bristol; married Henry Charles BYRDE, on 5 Jun 1837; died on 23 Dec 1893, Pontypool. Anne IVEY was born before 1770 in Kingston, Jamaica. She died on 14 Apr 1818 in Kingston Jamaica. She was buried on 15 Apr 1818 in Kingston, Jamaica. She lived Yes. She lived Yes. She lived Yes. At the time of his father's death, John was set up in business, From this small beginning he went on to prosper and become a prominent and respected citizen of Jamaica, but not before experiencing the sharper end of business dealings first, as the following extract from The Lindo Legacy reveals:- "The following morning (4 January 1803) Alexandre Lindo left Kingston to take up possession and management of Pleasant Hill estate. Lake, in the meantime, sent a note to the overseer, John Mais, with directions to withhold possession by force if Lindo attempted to enter the property. Mais greeted Lindo on his arrival at Pleasant Hill with a group of slaves, menacingly armed with muskets, and threatened Lindo with utmost violence if he attempted to enter the property. As Lindo stepped forward, several shots were fired. He lost no time in beating a hasty retreat to Kingston, where he filed suit in Jamaica's Court of Chancery." During these times it was not unusual for slaves to take the name of their "owners". There are records of a slave called simply 'Mais' being purchased by Benjamin Crossley in 1829 At some point, John earned the title "Honourable", presumably in recognition of his activity as a Magistrate/Justice of the Peace. We have come across the following examples of his activities in this and other capacities:- He became a Member of the House of Assembly

In 1839 he was an Assistant Judge in the Supreme Court of Judicature In 1839 he was a Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce In 1839 he was President of the Bank of Jamaica and also Treasurer, Manager and Trustee of the Kingston Bank for Savings In 1840 he was an Assistant Judge/Magistrate for the County of Surrey and Kingston (see note xiv). By the time he was serving as a member of the House of Assembly, he must have reconciled his differences with the Lindo family, as the following extract shows:- "Before Abraham Lindo left for England (in 1825) he had received a letter from none other than John Mais, the overseer of Pleasant Hill who had fired on his father when he had come to take possession of the plantation. Mais, now a member of the Assembly of Jamaica, informed Lindo that he had written to Huskisson telling him of Lindo's impending visit to England and recommending that he represent the merchants' cause." We also know that John acted as Attorney or Trustee in the business dealings in Jamaica of other Maises in the connected and unconnected family trees as follows:- Purchase of a tavern and coffee house by John Mais from Jeremiah Mais in 1809 The will of John Mais who died in 1819 Indentures for John's widow, Philippina Mais, and her family in both 1828 and 1829 (see note i). John died on 9/10/1853 and was buried on 16/10/1853 in St Andrew parish, Jamaica. In his will he had left £500 to his sister Ann Elizabeth, who predeceased him. By his death he owned one plantation, Halls Delight, and he left this and all its properties to be disposed of with £11,000 of the proceeds to be invested and shared between his and Martha's children on reaching twenty one years of age. He left the residue to two of the children of his relationship with Susanna Hamilton - Eliza and Jeremiah - and his other son, Edward. (It must therefore be assumed that his other two children by Susanna Hamilton - John and Amelia - were estranged from him or had died.) Edward and his nephew (and son-in-law), Stephen Weise Mais, were among the five Trustees Susanna Hamilton died on 9/4/1852 in Kingston but outlived Martha who had died on 15/4/1841 in St Pancras, London From information supplied by H,V & R Mais,J Green,S Cohen and P Newton and complied by H Mais. HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER Commerce, whether local, national or international, is today, the great motivating force controlling the actions, energies and ambitions of the world. It is essential that there should be well-organized bodies to protect and watch over the interests of the industrial and commercial community in every country, when Governments are continually proposing, or enacting legislation, which affects such interests. So it was that two hundred and twenty years ago a group of local business and professional men formed the Kingston Chamber of Commerce, with a view to improving the trade conditions, urging legislation beneficial to commerce and social welfare and most important, to encourage the growth and prosperity of their community. Although Spanish town was where the Government had its headquarters, as did the plantocracy, Kingston was the Commercial Centre. The majority of the merchants lived in or near Kingston. In "an Almanack and Register for the Year of our Lord 1779[...] adapted for [...] Jamaica," which has been preserved in the Institute of Jamaica, the "Office-Bearers" of the Kingston Chamber of Commerce is listed. Thomas Hibbert, Jr., was the first President, Alexander Allardyce, Vice-President, Moses Benson, Treasure and John Hardwar, Secretary. Thomas Hibbert, jr., the nephew of Thomas Hibbert, Speaker of the Assembly in 1756 was the Member of the Assembly for St. George in 1770-75. It was Thomas Hibbert, the Speaker who built Hibbert House on Duke Street, known to us as Headquarters House. This was the House of Parliament form 1872, when the capital moved from Spanish Town to Kingston, up until 1960. The Secretary, John Hardwar, who later became Auditor General of the Colony, is perpetuated in Hardwar Gap, through which the road from Kingston to buff Bay passes over the Blue Mountain Range. Other illustrious personalities who were members of this first Chamber of Commerce included Hercules Rose, Naval Agent and a personal friend of Admiral Nelson, Thomas Gray, member of the Assembly for Kingston in 1781, and Robert Milligan, who left Jamaica in 1779 to reside in London, and was later instrumental in forming the famous West Indian Docks, of which he was Chairman. Advertisements and news items appearing in the Jamaica Mercury and Kingston Weekly Advertiser, testify to the activities of the Kingston Chamber of Commerce. In the issue of May 15, 1979, occurs the following:

"KINGSTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MAY 14, 1779 A meeting of the Committee of this society is requested to be held on Tuesday next, the 18th instant at their Room in Howard's Tavern, on special business. By Order of the Vice-President. J. Hardwar, Secretary" Under the date, Kingston, October 2, 1779, appears the following paragraph: "[...] We hear the Chamber of Commerce have agreed to petition the Admiral that the Convoy for Great Britain may be appointed to sail the 26th of November next[...] " In the supplement of the Royal Gazette, November 18, 1780, the following advertisement appeared: Kingston, November 15, 1780 "The Admiral having been pleased to signify that he will appoint a Convoy for the Trade for Great Britain to sail any day between the middle of January and the middle of February[...] " In 1789, a number of merchants were desirous of establishing an Office of Marine Intelligence, where "an exact account of the arrival and sailing of vessels will be kept, a general account of cargoes of arrival expressed, every intelligence interesting to the Merchants and trader obtained with as much accuracy as possible[...] " This was an early example of the unfortunate duplication of efforts, which had plagued Jamaica since its early history. One would have thought that the newly constituted Chamber of Commerce could have everything that the Office of Marine Intelligence proposed to do. The Almanack for 1782 lists Eliphalet Fitch as President, Allan McLean as Vice-President, Robert Hibbert as Treasurer and Edward Marriott as Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. Eliphalet Fitch was Assistant Judge of the Supreme Court. Further reference to the Chamber of Commerce in 1782, can be found in a letter from President to Admiral Rodney who was in Jamaica after his famous victory in "The Battle of the Saints, which according to Clinton Black in his "New almost certain capture[...] " The letter said, "[...] A Chamber of Commerce having been lately established in this town with a view to collect the Sense of the Merchants and others interested in the Trade of the Island, experience has shown that many advantages result from this institution," and requested Admiral Rodney's patronage. In 1783, Thomas Gray was President, Thomas Bond, Vice-President, while the Secretary and Treasurer remained the same. No alteration in the office-holders took place in 1784. But the Chamber appears to have been short-lived, because in the Almanack for 1785 and subsequent years, there is no reference to it. Perhaps the death of some of its original founders and the departure from the island of others hastened its demise. There are various references to the existence of Chambers of Commerce over the ensuing years, but although the records are scanty it seems safe to assume that there was no continuity of organisation over the next half century. The next Chamber of Commerce was established at a meeting of "merchants and other inhabitants of this city" held on 21st October, 1839. Here it was: "Resolved: That being desirous of promoting the welfare of this Colony at large, and being also of opinion that this object can be best attained by a combination of interests of the Planter, the Merchant, and the Mechanic, the subscribers to agree to form themselves into a Society to be called "THE JAMAICA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE." The first President was the Honourable Hector Mitchell who was also the Mayor of the City of Kingston, as well as Custos of Kingston. Hector Mitchell had had an interesting career. He was at various times in his life, a Captain in the Kingston Militia, Vice- President of the Firewardens, Member of the Assembly for Kingston; Assistant Judge, Court of Common Pleas, Kingston; Justice, Surrey Assizes and Treasurer, Wolmer's Free School. His Vice Presidents were the Honourable John Mais and John Fowles, with William Wright as Treasurer. At this time the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce was the sole arbitrator in settling differences and adjusting accounts between various parties. It was also called up to settle any questions related to the mercantile trade. Two of its first projects were the upgrading of the mail service between Port Royal and Kingston and the improvement of the Insolvent Debtors' Law. It is known that Mr. Mitchell was President up until 1846 at least. He died in 1853, and may have been President at the time of his death, but this cannot be ascertained. Gall's Newsletter of April 3 1875, also mentions the Chamber of Commerce as being at 2 Duke Street. In the Jamaica Directory (1878) there was an advertisement by the

Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, which at this time had offices at 131 Harbour Street. Oscar Marescaux, Manager of the Colonial Bank, was now President. The Vice- Presidents were James H. McDowell, Ralph Nunes, H. F. Colthist and Altamont DaCosta, with James Gall as Secretary. Miss Sicard was the Librarian and Luke Hollar, the Boarding Officer. An interesting footnote to the advertisement said, "The News room is open to all strangers visiting the island and to Captains of Vessels on the introduction of a subscriber." Unfortunately, not very much can be found on the actual work of the Chamber at this time. The Jamaica Directory gives the name of another organization then in existence as "The Royal Society of Arts and Agriculture of Jamaica." It also tells us that it was the process of being reorganized. It was a merger between the agriculture and commercial sectors, the Royal Society of Arts and Agriculture of Jamaica and the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce, which led in May 1885 top the formation of the "Jamaica Society of Agriculture and Commerce." It is this society which, having undergone various name changes and reorganization, is known today as the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce. The first President was the Honourable James McDowell who had been a Vice-President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce in 1878 and an ex-officio member of the Royal Society of Arts and Agriculture in 1867. The Vice-Presidents were the Honourable William Malabre, George Solomon, George Stiebel and John Ellis, with the Reverend J. B. Ellis as Secretary. The first annual report tells us that the Honourable James McDowell resigned as President during the year, "on account of pressure of business and ill-health, but expressed a wish to continue as a member of the Council." His place was taken by George Solomon. As stated in the rules, the chief objects for which the society existed were: 1. "To take action in all matters concerned with the Agriculture and Trade of the Colony. 2. To offer facilities for considering and discussing all schemes or proposals having for their object the increased development of the Industrial resources of the Colony, by means of improved methods of Cultivation, Scientific Process of Manufacture, New Implements or Appliances of Husbandry, or any other Available Agency. 3. To promote[...] improvement in the breed of stock, the opening up of new markets for cattle, horses, etc[...] and the practicability of enlarging the area of Minor Products. 4. To co-operate with kindred Associations[...] in constitutional efforts for the removal of all unjust fiscal or other disabilities, such as Foreign Export Counties[...] 5. To have control over the holding and conducting of Agricultural Shows, Fairs and Competitions different parts of the island. 6. To perform. the function of a recognized medium of communication with the Government[...] 7. To exercise the province of Arbitrator[...] in all matters Agriculture or Commercial. 8. To watch over every question emanating from the local Government, or from other sources, whether Home or Foreign which may in any way affect the interests of the people of this island[...] " It was the practice for the Chamber to report on the activities of the Merchants' Exchange, which the Society had opened on February 1, 1868, at the Southwest corner of Duke and Harbour Streets. The Merchants Exchange employed a Signal Man, who was as well as a Boarding, and Reporting Officer. On the appearance of vessels, signals were hoisted at the southeast corner of Church and Port Royal Streets. The following signals were used when vessels were sighted: Warships - English - Red Ensign with pennant Foreign - National Flag with pennant Steamer - Ball Ship - Blue Flag Barque - Red and Blue Flag Barquantine Red and White Flag Brig Red Flag Brigantine Yellow and Red Flag Schooner Yellow Flag When the vessel was identified, al parties known to be interested were contacted. The Exchange also recorded the daily departures, the particulars of cargoes imported and exported, and the names of passengers arriving and departing. Because of the similarity of interests of the Merchants' Exchange and the Society of Agriculture and Commerce, the following resolution was adopted at the Annual General Meeting held on June 23, 1892: "Whereas the interests and management of the Jamaica Society of Agriculture and Commerce and the Merchants' Exchange being identical: RESOLVED that the societies be amalgamated under the title of the "Jamaica Society of Agriculture and Commerce and Merchants' Exchange." In 1896, the Council "received the permission of Her Most Gracious Majesty (Queen Victoria) for the Society to add the prefix Royal to its former title." So there was another name change, and the organisation became known as the "The Royal Jamaica Society of Agriculture and Commerce and Merchants' Exchange. John Orrett had acceded to the Presidency at the end of December 1886, when the Honourable George Solomon, simultaneously with his retirement from business in Kingston, resigned as President of the Society. John Orrette retained this position until he resigned in September 1895, at which time Lieutenant Colonel Charles James Ward took over the reign of President, a position he held until 1913. . In 1909, the Chamber appointed Mr. E. A. DePass as its representative in London. It was thought that the commercial and agricultural interests of the island would be better served if the Chamber had a representative in London to: A. "Give expression in England on any views this Chamber of Commerce might desire to have ventilated: B. To have as an adviser a man of position, experience and ability that could present has advice on all subjects - touching the welfare of Jamaica - which might arise. The Society had so far successfully served the island's economic interest of agricultural production and marketing. But with the ever-increasing complexity of the economy, it became obvious that separate organizations were needed to concentrate on agriculture and commerce. In 1922 the Society was reorganized, and it was decided for the purpose of convenience that the ordinary designation should be "The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and Merchants' Exchange." On March 21, 1950, this organization was incorporated under the Companies Law as the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Limited. This continued two years and then Mr. Whitehead went on the road for a year in the employ of a Troy paper house, and then entered into a partnership with George H. Mitchell, in a drug and grocery business, a business association which has continued until the present time. Other enterprises in which Mr. Whitehead and Mr. Mitchell are mutually interested and which have been unusually successful, are the Exchange Bank, which was organized in 1886, and the Birmingham Brick Company, Limited. The latter is the offspring of the brick business of E. E. Daniels, at Birmingham, a capital of $15,000 being invested. They own the finest brick and tile yard in Oakland County, having a capacity of 25,000 bricks per day; from 2 to 14 men are employed in making stock and wire-cut brick, tile and foundation blocks, the last named being a specialty. Some 26 years ago Mr. Whitehead started a weekly newspaper and named it the Eccentric and until quite recently has

edited it, this department now being in charge of Mr. Mitchell, who attends to its affairs. In 1878 Mr. Whitehead married Emma Bodine, who was born in 1855 in Connecticut and is a daughter of John and Sarah Bodine. Their one son, Raynale A., born in 1884, graduated in 1903 from the Birmingham High School and in the fall entered the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He is a young man with brilliant prospects. Mr. Whitehead is identified with the Republican party. He has long been prominent in village affairs, is a member of the board of trustees and has been president of the village board for a number of terms, his good judgment in business matters making him a very desirable public official.
