    The History of AppliedLinguistics

The term 'applied linguistics' refers to a broad range ofactivities which involve solving some language-related problem or addressing some language-related concern. It appears as though applied

linguistics, at least in North America, was firstofficially recognized as an independent course atthe University of Michigan in 1946. In those earlydays, the term was used both in the United Statesand in Great Britain to refer to applying a so-called

'scientific approach' to teaching foreign languages, including English for nonnative speakers.

    The History of AppliedLinguistics

Early work to improve the quality of foreign

    language teaching by Professors Charles

Fries (University of Michigan) and Robert

    The History of AppliedLinguistics

At the close of the 1950s, issues of languagediversity, language policy, and the growingimportance of English worldwide created ademand for access to information about worldlanguages and for expertise in linguistics andlanguage training. The History of AppliedLinguistics : Organizations

It was in this environment of increased interest inlanguage issues that the Centre for AppliedLinguistics CAL was founded in 1959 byCharles Ferguson with funding from the Ford

Foundation. CAL's mandate, according to MelFox, then a program officer with the FordFoundation, was to be a "resource base forEnglish as a second language (and tobecome) a national resource for the application

of linguistics and of new methods generally tothe teaching and learning of secondlanguages."
