Dear Friends!
Even though our temperatures are in the 90’s, Crisis Control
Ministry is getting ready for the cold weather that is just around the
corner. For the month of September, they are requesting GRITS
AND OATMEAL be given by the local churches. These are
inexpensive items so add as many as you can to your shopping
cart. I believe you will be ―warmed‖ by your own generosity.

different location. You can listen to sermons

A Note from Senior Pastor David Harrison
Hello Members of FCC!
Fall is quickly approaching. In the next few weeks, we will begin to see nature transition from sum-
mer into fall. Crisp mornings, cool nights, yellow and brown leaves, fresh air. Newness.
With these ideals in mind, I am happy to launch our new bible study on September 18th at noon. My
hopes for this community bible study, is that it will inspire us, renew us and at times, even challenge
us. This bible study will be interactive, fun and more importantly, it will be another time that our
community of faith can come together and share our faith with one another. ―As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another.‖ (Proverbs 27:17) After each bible study, there will be time for our
membership to meet and talk about the many ministry and life events within our church as, ―FCC
Connects‖ I am looking forward to seeing how God will move in this next endeavor!
Additionally, beginning on September 18th, I will also start ―Walk-In Wednesday,‖ from 9 am to 11
am. During this time, feel free to drop by the office without an appointment to meet with me!
I am excited for the future, I am also well aware of the many challenges that still lie ahead. Most of
you, received my action plan for the church a few months ago. I have begun to take steps to imple-
ment some of those plans. One of the vital areas of ministry that is in immediate need, is our minis-
try for youth on Sunday mornings during our worship service. As stated in my action plan, ―we need
to foster christian growth and interest within every age group of the church.‖ One way of doing this
is by reinstituting Worship and Wonder or another curriculum led opportunity for our youth and fu-
ture youth to come. Some of the feedback I have received from guests highlight our lack of opportu-
nities for youth on Sundays. We need to correct this. It will take an intentional effort to do so. I am
asking for your help. If you have worked with youth in the past by way of ministry or profession, if
you feel a call to youth, or even if you want to step in and respond to this need. I am looking for
you! If enough people respond, this need can easily be filled. We, as a church, must operate in a way
that we are prepared and preparing for the future. By being proactive, instead of being reactive.
Please see me if you are interested! If enough people commit, it would only require one Sunday per
person a month, or a rotation schedule
Again, I am excited for what lies ahead for our church. I am so excited for the lives that will be im-
pacted and changed for the better, through God’s grace. But the change has to begin with each of us!
―Simple things like a leaf falling gently onto your lap can have
so many meanings to different people. The shedding of leaves
can be viewed as Mother Nature's way of letting go in the same
way we may need to let go of things that are holding us back in
our everyday lives.‖-Edel T. Copeland

A Message from Our Moderator
To my good Friends!
I know I have said it many times but another month is almost to an end and we begin the ninth
month of our year! September will be here in only a few days. We begin the fourth quarter of
2019. It seems only yesterday that we all were wondering what it would be like when the clock
struck 12 o’clock midnight on December 31, 1999. We are almost twenty years past the time a new
century began.
The last twenty years have shown good things for First Christian. One of the main things that has
happened to us is that we have become much more a ―mission‖ church. What is a ―mission‖
church? It’s one that doesn’t always put its needs first. It gives to others. One of the goals of this
congregation has been to give away at least 10% of our budget. This is one area we will need to
remember when we begin preparing our 2020 budget.
Our building has aged another twenty years. This church is just like our houses. After so long, we
must make costly repairs. This is evident in the replacement of the HVAC system in the
Opportunity Wing. We are fortunate our members take it upon themselves and repair what they
can. If we had to call a repairman every time something happened, I can’t imagine what our budget
would have to be. You stepped up. Our Capital Campaign to pay for this system is going well.
The last five years have been a little unusual for us. First Christian has had a full-time minister
since the beginning. After much thought and study, we reluctantly called a part-time
minister. Church members stepped up again. Basic needs were met but we knew our minister
needed to be full-time. In July, you said ―yes‖ to calling Rev. David Harrison as our full-time
minister. Now we will have bible study regularly, an open door on Wednesday mornings for you to
stop by David’s office and talk, and he has time for hospital visitations and visiting our members
who are home most of the time. David’s ministry will continue to grow. Our 2020 budget will
need to reflect what his extended ministry means to each of us.
Folks, I am not a budget-minded person. I know they are important to guide us in our
spendings. We must have one. This year, we will be looking very closely at our budget
preparation. If you would like to volunteer to be a part of that process, please talk to me about it.
This will be beginning soon.
I hope all of you will enjoy the cooler days that will begin in this our ninth month. I always look
forward to this time of year with all the traditions we celebrate. Spend time with your family and
friends and enjoy your days because they do move along so swiftly. I’ll see you in church!
Yours in Christ

YOUTH HAPPENINGS
The youth group needs volunteers to help out with dinner on
Wednesday nights. If you are able to help please email
Kaitlin.mundy@gmail.
What a summer! Many of our youth spent the summer volunteering and
working with the kids at Palooza. Their compassion, patience, and dedi-
cation to those children served as an excellent representation of our
church community and what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
Their hard work has inspired our September theme: ―Reflection.‖
As we reflect on our summer experiences, we will reflect on what it
means to be a part of a church family, what it means to live as examples
of Christ, and what it looks like to spend time in quiet contemplation with
God each day.
Our theme verse for this month is Matt. 19:14 —
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them,
for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."
If you would like to know how you can get involved with the youth
group, please email Kaitlin or call her at (828) 713-2570.
Peace,
Kaitlin
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Roar VBS was definitely a wonderful experience with all the kids (50-55)
and volunteers. They learned that no matter what happens in life- God is
Good! Kaitlin and Emily did a fantastic job as well as volunteers from
FCC, Palooza Staff, and Divinity Students from Wake Forest. It was truly
a team effort. It was such a joy to see the VBS kids so engaged in learn-
ing and being a part of God’s word. They (the kids) even told ―King
Pharaoh‖ that he needed to change from mean to nice!!!
Thanks,
Cheryl Askew

First Christian Friends!
First Christian Friends!
It is September already! We want to express our deep gratitude for your continued grace and faithful
trust in us as stewards of the New Communion mission, to be a faith-based organization with the
goal of enhancing community relationships and diminishing the impacts of hunger and food insecu-
rity through shared abundance. We would like to thank all of you for supporting our new book ini-
tiative! Many thanks to Kathy Sink for bringing this passion project to life!
Your continued support with peanut butter and jelly is greatly appreciated, as we support our local
communities and their youth during this summer season

New Initiative For New Communion
Our New Communion Mobile Market And Pantry is tasked with providing food for bodies and love
and compassion for souls. Now we would like to provide nourishment and nurture for young
minds!
We will begin right away to collect children’s books to give away to little ones who accompany
adults to our distribution events. Donations ranging from baby board books to chapter books for
older children will be much appreciated. Collection boxes will be located in the Education Wing be-
tween the restrooms as you enter the building and also in the narthex of the sanctuary. Please con-
tribute new or gently used volumes and help to foster literacy and bring joy to a child!
We can arrange to pick up books if you are unable to get them to the church. Just call the church of-
fice at 336-722-2714 or comment on this post, and pickup will be arranged. Also, if you know of a
source for free and/or inexpensive children’s books, that info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
in advance for your support of this new project.

Church is hosting a Farmers' market in the parking lot from 3:30 pm - 6 pm,
and we invite craft vendors too. If you or someone you know is interested
in becoming a vendor or sponsor please email Alanna Harris for more
information at [email protected].

Camp Agape This year we had 30 campers from economically challenged or broken
homes. The children were given a church camp experience through the love
and generosity of Christian Churches in the Central District of the region. Our campers had a wonderful
time thanks to the gifts of the churches which chose to participate by sending money, campers, clothing and
other necessary items. The 30 campers who had completed the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grades shared this camp
experience with 6 counselors. We continue to have some counselors who were former Camp Agape Camp-
ers. This year a work camp from FCC Shelbyville, Indiana presented early morning devotions and lead
group building games and crafts. Thanks to the following churches that sent campers: Antioch Christian
(3), Salem Fork, Dobson (8), and Winston-Salem, First (19). A special thank you to everyone that made
arrangements for our campers to come this year, and thanks to Connie and Charlie Hance, Hazel Wilmoth,
and Phil Royall who drove campers to and from camp. Be sure to check out pictures from this year’s camp
at www.facebook.com/campagape.christmount.

Celebrating 50 years of Crop Walk
Church World Service (CWS) is an organization that works with partners to build interfaith and intercul-
tural coalitions to eradicate hunger and poverty, and to promote peace and justice around the world. CWS
started in 1946 after WWII to assist in the rebuild of war torn Eastern Europe. US farmers were asked to
donate a portion of their grains, such as corn, wheat and soybeans, that were put on to ―friendship trains‖ to
be taken to the US coast, and then loaded into friend ―ships‖, to cross the Atlantic. Today, funds are raised
to assist in the building of greenhouses, community gardens, systems to catch and store rainwater, and to
help families learn how to raise pigs, goats, fish and other animals to improve their diet and earn extra in-
come. Also, funds raised go to help areas with relief after a natural disaster. A portion of last year’s funds
came back to the Carolinas to help with recovery from last year’s hurricanes. The first Crop Hunger Walks
took place in 1969 in Bismarck, ND, and in York County, Pa. Today, over 4000 walks take place through-
out the country, with the same goal: a world where every child has enough healthy food every day. Watch
the bulletin board going up the ramp into the sanctuary for more details as to how you can make a donation,
or sign up to walk with us on Sunday afternoon, October 20. FCC typically raises $1000 - $1200 for this
event. Can we grow that amount in this 50th year celebration?
