Liberty F.D. a true community organization
T he Liberty Fire Department is celebrating 145 years of serviceto the community by hosting the 87th Annual SullivanCounty Volunteer Firefighters Assn. Parade next Saturday,
August 1.It is a huge undertaking for any group – especially firemen – to
host a parade steeped in such his-tory and tradition. Firemen andemergency personnel from theentire Hudson Valley will be repre-sented at this parade, marchingproudly down Main Street, Libertyas parade goers show their admira-tion with applause.
It is not often that we truly pauseto thank our volunteer firemen forall they do for our community. They
are certainly the first ones we think of when an emergency hap-pens in our home or community and they respond faithfully andprofessionally, as Liberty Fire Dept. has done for the past 145 years.
This one department, of which there are over 40 in SullivanCounty, has responded to nearly 100,000 emergencies in its histo-
ry, with little fanfare and hardly any notice. We would like toapplaud their efforts for helping to make our communities safeand for helping so many people in their time of need. Their selflessacts of courage have saved lives, saved property from damage andprotected their fellow community members from hurricanes, floods, fires and the other ravages of Mother Nature.
And might we add that our firemen are some of the best trainedand most devoted firemen in New York State. Sullivan County haslong been regarded as a leader in training and dedication to thevolunteer firemen ranks and we proudly say that our departmentshave handled some of the worst disasters with great expertise.
The fire departments of our area also work closely with theambulance corpsmembers, who are also on the top of the list ofdedicated volunteers, ready to step up any time of day or night tosave a life and comfort those who need their help the most. Thesehumble and caring individuals – like their firefighter brethren –need many hours of training and practice to hone their skills incase they are called upon to help.
We hope the community will respond on Saturday, August 1 andturn out for the Annual Firemen’s Parade to say thank you to thethousands of volunteers who keep us all safe and sound.
It is not often that we trulypause to thank our volunteerfiremen for all they do forour community.

One cold winter night, Februaryfifteenth, in the year EighteenFifty-Seven, a fire occurred in
Liberty which, in a great way, wasresponsible for the start of the LibertyFire Department.
Quinlan's "History of Sullivan" tellsus that a professional burglar, namedLevi Rogers, entered the store ofClements and Messiter, and afterremoving some of the contents, setfire to the building. Evidence found inthe ruins let to Roger's arrest and con-viction. Two other buildings were alsoburned in the fire.
Shortly after this fire, before 1861,two fire companies were formed:Watkins Engine Co. No. 1 (J.C Young)and B.W Winner Hook and Ladder Co.No. 2 (Hose & Truck).
Dr. John D. Watkins, who owned theproperty now occupied by the O. E.Kellers, purchased a second-handpump from a private hose companyin New York City for $325 and present-ed it to Co. No. 1. The Winner Co.raised the money and ordered a lad-der wagon with twenty buckets. Thisequipment was made in Liberty byLamoreaox Brothers and served theWinner Company so well that it was
only taken out of service in 1925 whena Packard chassis with Pirsch ladderwas purchased by the Village. Weknow very little about the operationof these units until the incorporationof the Village in September 1870.
The only two companies then activewere the Hollock Hose Co., now J.C.Young Company No. 1 and LibertyHose & Truck Company No. 2, bothlocated on or near Main Street.
Both companies had only hand-drawn equipment. There was consid-erable delay before they arrived at afire on the hill in the station area. Thestreets then were unpaved and some-
The origins of the Liberty Fire Departmenttimes knee deep in mud and in thewinter it was worse because the snowwas deep.
A group of men living on the hillsaw a necessity to having some fireprotection and decided to do some-thing about it. On the night of Janu-ary 15, 1901, fifteen of these men metand founded the Ontario Hose Com-pany No. 3. They then acquired ahose cart or jumper, which was a two-wheeled card carrying 500 feet of 2½-inch hose, two open nozzles, ahydrant wrench and a few spanners.
From that time on the Liberty FireDepartment was made up of threecompanies that still exist today as theLiberty Joint Fire District with thefirehouse located at 256 Sprague Ave.,Liberty.

Monticello firefighters get tips on saving pets
STORY AND PHOTO BY KRISTINA SUMFLETH
MONTICELLO — Pet owners canrest assured their companions will besafer after the Monticello FireDepartment received a visit from thevet recently.
Veterinarian Joseph D’Abbracciowent to the Monticello Firehouse todonate new pet technology and togive a presentation on what can harmanimals – and not just in fires – andthe best ways to help them if they doget into trouble.
The presentation was put togetheras an outreach for animal ownerswith the help of Dr. D’Abbraccio’sbrother, Mike, who is a fireman inMonticello.
A dog or cat may be the first to leapout of a burning home and the newSurgiVet oxygen masks Dr.D’Abbraccio donated to the
Monticello FD will make it easier totreat these animals. Members of theMonticello Police Department K-9Unit also attended to learn moreabout the dogs who are constantcompanions.
“I like to have people informed andI like to teach, and a little communityoutreach helps to give better infor-mation,” explained Dr. D’Abbracciowho owns Catskill VeterinaryServices, a mobile service based inMonticello. The 2006 graduate ofMonticello HS has been a vet for overthree years and mainly visits sick petsin their homes but also providesmedical and surgical services at theWurtsboro Veterinary Clinic.
Not only did Dr. D’Abbraccio detailways to treat animals in emergencies, but he also elaborated on many sim-ple household items that can harmpets, some of which may surprisemost pet owners.
Fire Department gets a visit from the vet
The newly donated SurgiVet oxygen masks are specially shaped to fit over the mouth of catsand dogs. They will be added to the Monticello Fire Department’s emergency equipment ontheir fire trucks.
Chocolate is a commonly knowntoxin for dogs, but many people areunaware that hand lotion, ibuprofenand even grapes can cause harm todogs as well. Similarly, those beauti-ful Easter lilies or poinsettias can bepoisonous to cats if they eat or come
in contact with them. During thesehot summer months, cats and dogsoverheating is also a common issue, especially when left in unattendedcars.

If any pet owner is concerned aboutwhat their little companion has eatenor come into contact with, the bestoption is to take them to a veterinari-an. For cats and dogs, a trip to the vetcould save their lives.
After the vet finished his presenta-tion, Matt Rohner of the MonticelloPD’s K-9 Unit helped his dog Deccaonto the table to demonstrate how thenewly donated oxygen masks can beused. The oxygen masks can be easilyconnected to an oxygen tank but themask portion is designed specially tofit over the mouths of canine andfeline friends.
Dr. D’Abbraccio is hoping to puttogether similar outreach presenta-tions for other fire departments in thecounty as well. As for this first one, theMonticello Fire Department mem-bers greatly appreciated the new toolsand information.
“In the course of what we do wecome across animals and this gives usa set of tools to better serve the com-munity,” stated ex-chief Alan Kesten.“We never know when we get to save alife and that may now be a dog’s life.”
From left, Assistant Chief A.J. Washington, Monticello Fire Department Chief Scott Schoonmaker, Veterinarian Joseph D’Abbraccio and Mon-ticello Police K-9 Unit officer Matt Rohner smile for a photo after the Fire Department received the new oxygen masks.

The Beaverkill Valley Fire Department’s trucks are some of the toughest you’ll find in SullivanCounty, as they have to negotiate the steepest mountainsides and least improved roads inthe region. They cover the far northern reaches of the county, in the peaks of the Catskills.
