Beware of Scams Relatedto the Coronavirus
Scammers are taking advantage of thecoronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic to conpeople into giving up their money. Though thereason behind their fraud is new, their tacticsare familiar. It can be even harder to preventscams right now because people 62 and olderare not interacting with as many friends, neighbors, and senior service providers due toefforts to slow the spread of disease.
THE BOTTOM LINEThe best defense is to say NO if:• Anyone contacts you and asks for your
Social Security number, bank accountnumber, credit card information, MedicareID number, or driver’s license number.
• Anyone contacts you asking for any otherpersonally identifiable information byphone, in person, by text message, or email.
• Someone you do not know contacts you andrequests money through a Peer to Peer (P2P)payment app like Venmo or Zelle or throughpre-paid gift cards. These methods transferfunds immediately with little recall orretrieval capabilities and can be hard totrace, often making them the preferredchoice of scammers.
• Someone you do not know sends you acheck, maybe for prize-winnings or for thesale of goods and asks you to send a portionof the money back.
• Something does not feel right to you. Trustyour gut and reserve the right to say no if itsounds too good to be true.
