Everyone knows what this is…
DUCTS PENETRATING COMPARTMENT WALLS2
FIRE DOORS
Most people see one every day
DUCTS PENETRATING COMPARTMENT WALLS3
STANDARDDUCTWORK
But look up or go above the false ceiling
And you should find ordinary DW144 steelductwork for ventilation air which will often pass
through the partition above doors, but will also gothrough at other points too..
And you should find things that are less well known

FIREDAMPERS
Where normal ventilation ductwork passes throughcompartment boundaries, the penetration and
compartment must be protected by a fire damper. It isa common misconception that fire dampers protect
ductwork, what they actually do is maintain thecompartmentation which is why they must be installed
correctly
An alternative is
DUCTS PENETRATING COMPARTMENT WALLS5
FIRERESISTINGDUCTWORK
In some instances fire resisting ductwork may beinstalled. This is also designed and tested to
maintain compartmentation, and consequentlymust be constructed and installed correctly at the
compartment wall
Installation
DUCTS PENETRATING COMPARTMENT WALLS6
INSTALLATION
With installations it is often what is not seen that is important and must begot right during installation, support at the wall is critical for both dampers
and ducts, otherwise they might collapse at the wall and lose integrity
Penetration seals only tested with pipes and cables are not proven foruse with dampers and ducts, unless they have been tested with dampersand ducts, so duct nand damper manufacturers cannot support this type
of installation unless thay have done specific testing. This situation isoften overlooked on site, but may peove an issue if found after the event.
Test information
Fire dampersFire dampers should be tested to BSEN1366-2.
Escape routes and areas with sleeping risk should be protected with ESclassified motorised fire dampers that respond to smoke alarms
Curtain fire dampers only have an E classification
Dampers tested ad hoc to BS 476 will be acceptable in older installationsbut not really in new ones.
The Construction Products Regulation (CPR) now requires that firedampers are CE marked and installed in line with manufacturers'instructions, which is generally as they have been tested.
CE marking is to EN15650 and requires testing to BS EN 1366-2 and thirdparty certification

TESTINFORMATION
Test information
Fire resisting ductsFire resisting ducts should be tested to BSEN1366-1 or BS476-24.
The latter is still allowed until such products have a standard publishedthat requires CE marking. The standard is well under way, but it is notclear exactly when it will be published.

TESTINFORMATION
Test information
Smoke control ductsSmoke control ducts should be tested to BSEN1366-8 for fire resistance formulti compartment installations
Smoke control ducts should be tested to BSEN1366-9 for 600°Cperformance (and below) for single compartment installations
CE marking is generally required under the requirements of BS EN12101-7

TESTINFORMATION
Test information
Smoke control dampersSmoke control dampers should be tested to BSEN1366-10 for fireresistance for multi compartment installations and 600°C performance (andbelow) for single compartment installations
CE marking is generally required under the requirements of BS EN12101-8
They can be employed in smoke control ducts and in fire resisting ductsand there are other applications where such dampers are required to beopen on a fire floor to allow smoke to be exhausted and closed in otherareas

The damper is within the plane of the wall, the installation is complete andwithout any damage to the seal around the damper.
Note: However, it needs to be checked that damper has been tested in a battinstallation, especially for ES requirements
