“Fine Motor Finishing School”

n PROGRAM OVERVIEW “Fine Motor Finishing School” is

a program that was designed to provide students with the opportunity to enhance their f ine motor skills with hands-on activities. Students can actively participate in daily centers that focus on strengthening their pincer grip and hand-eye coordination. These center activities were designed so students can essentially work independently or with little teacher direction.

The program also integrates reading and math skills and can be adapted by virtually any grade level for students who need fine motor practice. The overall goal is for students to strengthen their fine motor muscles without ever having to simply practice with just paper and pencil.

Students’ fine motor strength will be judged based on a pre, middle, and post self-portrait. Using a rubric, I look for specific human details that should be included in the illustration. Students will also be evaluated on their participation during the centers. I use a checklist for each group of centers rating their ability to do each task on a scale.

n PRE PLANNINGMy center t ime operates with

five centers that last for 15 minutes each. Four students make up each heterogeneous group. Teachers should choose one center per day. Repetition is important, introduction of new skills are also important. The centers are separated based on the main supplies used for the activities.

n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed

with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including prices and vendors follows the lesson plans.

n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Kelly Oglialoro graduated with a

Bachelor of Science in PreK/Primary Education from Florida Southern College. She received her Master’s degree in Reading from the University of South Florida.

She has been teaching for 7 years. She taught first grade for 5 years at South McKeel Academy where she currently teaches preschool. This is her second year as a preschool teacher.

n SUBJECTS COVEREDFine Motor – Hand-eye coordination

n GRADESPreK – K (or others needing fine motor practice)

n OBJECTIVES • Students will increase their fine motor

strength and hand-eye coordination by practicing scooping.

n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS

• FL VPK—I.D.1

n MATERIALS• Scissor Scoops or Tongs

• Beads

• Bowls

n DIRECTIONS Spoon beads with a scoop into a

bowl. To differentiate based on skills, more advanced students can sort beads they scoop into particular color groups and those less advanced can focus on successfully scooping the beads into the bowl.
