◦ Schools now challenged to deliver 5 hours of PE and School Sport; 2hr within curriculum and 3hrs out of school hours in a variety of extended opportunities.

◦ UK only 21st in physical activity league table in Europe.

Why Youth?◦ July 2007 – 10yr strategy for positive activities.◦ Key aim to empower young people to make decisions

and influence actions. Volunteering projects obtain high support.

◦ Government campaigns to tackle youth crime, offending and truancy.

◦ Healthy weight, healthy life strategy .◦ National Child Measuring Programme.◦ Obesity targets – ¼ of all adults and of 1/6th children under

11 obese.◦ Nearly two billion pounds a year – more than £3,000 a

minute – is spent treating conditions that could be prevented by regular exercise within the NHS.

◦ About 27 million of us don’t do the recommended 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week. 14 million, about one in three, don’t even manage one session. (Andy Burnham, Aug 2009)

small grants on behalf of local agencies. Usually grants of between £500 - £10,000.

Co-op Community Fund – up to £5000.Equitable Charitable Trust – up to £30,000 to support

projects which support the delivery of national curriculum or vocational learning for disadvantaged children.

Youth Opportunities Fund, Youth of Today, V Youth Volunteering.

Understanding the objectives of the funding agency and relating the project to the criteria.

Outcomes and other Government targets and agendas.

Showing how the project will address current weakness and meet key areas of need.

Being innovative, offering something unique that isn’t easily deliverable by other agencies.

documentation is included.Being realistic in relation to funding.
