‡Ruth Easton was born Ruth Edelstein in North Branch, MN. At the age of 16, she left North Branch and moved to St. Paul, where she attended Macalester College and the University of Minnesota before moving to Los Angeles, where she earned her degree from the Cumnock School with a strong background in expression and literature. After graduation, with the idea that she would pursue a career in dramatic readings and perhaps take in pupils for private theater training, Easton moved to New York City. In 1923, a friend introduced Easton to Oliver Morosco, a noted producer of the era. After hearing Easton read part

of a play, Morosco encouraged her to pursue stage acting and began casting her—first as an understudy then in regular roles—in some of his productions. Regular stage work followed, with Easton appearing in stock roles all over New England. In 1928, Easton starred in the Broadway play Exceedingly Small, establishing her reputation as a versatile professional stage actress. After five years on Broadway, Easton appeared in radio dramas on the Rudy Vallee Hour and the Fleischmann’s Yeast hour opposite many notable actors of the time, including Lionel Barrymore. Before her retirement in the 1930s, she also appeared with Clark Gable, Eddie Cantor, Edward G. Robinson, and Al Jolson. A commitment to philanthropy characterized her retirement. Ms. Easton made many generous contributions to the theater and literature programs of her Minnesota alma maters, including the creation of the David E. Edelstein & Thomas A. Keller, Jr. Endowment in Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota.

notes on Undiscovered Country“Haven’t you ever thought about what a strange uncharted country is human behavior? So many contradictions find room in us — love and deceit … loyalty and betrayal … worshipping one woman, yet longing for another, or several others. We try to bring order into our lives as best we can but that very order has something unnatural about it. The natural condition is chaos. Yes, Hofreiter, the soul is an undiscovered country …” “Dr. Von Aigner” in Act Three of

Undiscovered Country

“There is no general rule. Undiscovered Country is pretty faithful. I thought of Schnitzler’s play as a modern classic, not to be monkeyed about with. But you’re not doing an author a favor if the adaptation is not vibrant. So, in the end, I started ‘helping’ — not because Schnitzler was defective but because he was writing in 1905 in Vienna. When you are writing a play you use cultural references by the thousands and they all interconnect like a nervous system.”

Playwright Tom Stoppard on adapting Arthur Schnitzler’s Das Weite Land into Undiscovered Country:

Undiscovered County/Das Weite Land is a kaleidoscopic study of an upper-middle-class Austrian clique at the beginning of the 20th century. Vienna in the years immediately preceding World War I was a hotbed of scientific and artistic experimentation. Some of the great minds and artists working in the Austrian capital around the turn of the century were Gustav Klimt, Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Adolf Loos, Ludwig Boltzmann, Hugo von Hofmannst-hal, Egon Schiele, Arnold Schoenberg, Otto Wagner and Arthur Schnitzler. It is extremely fitting then that Schnitzler’s tragi-comedy tells a sophisticated and uncompromising story — a psychologically complex one concerning his favorite subjects (fidelity and betrayal, passion and indifference, youthful vitality and inevitable mortality). None of the major relationships portrayed in the play are simple or healthy. In fact, a good many of the characters, includ-ing Genia and Friedrich Hofreiter (the married couple at the epicenter of the plot), might have benefitted from time spent on Freud’s couch! (Freud once described Schnitzler as his dramaturgical “doppelganger.”) Mention Schnit-zler today and most modern theater-goers think of Reigen (or La Ronde), his cleverly constructed and often-revived roundelay of sexual encounters. But Schnitzler, who, like Anton Chekhov, was a physician as well as a writer, was hardly a one-play wonder. Playwriting was Schnitzler’s means for dissecting social and sexual mores and for surveying the vast domain of the soul. His recurring themes and astonishing insights into human behavior make Schnit-zler’s best works remarkably relevant, even 100 years later.
