A balanced diet that’s rich in nutrients is a key compo-nent of a healthy lifestyle. Nutritious diets include fruits and vegetables, but a truly well-rounded diet also includes dairy.
The Dairy Council of Cali-fornia® notes that dairy products are good sources
of calcium and vitamin D, giving them a well-earned reputation as nutrient-rich products worthy of inclu-sion in healthy diets. Dairy products are more than just milk. In fact, the Unit-ed States Department of Agriculture notes that low- or reduced-fat cheeses and yogurts can provide a host of vitamins and nu-trients for those who want to include dairy in their di-ets without pouring them-selves a glass of milk.
The effects of dairy on the body are numerous, and the following are just some of the ways that the various nutrients and vitamins in
dairy can have a positive impact on you and your body.
Calcium
Various dairy products, in-cluding low-fat milk, yogurt and cottage cheese, are rich in calcium. The USDA notes that the body uses calcium to build bones and teeth and maintain bone mass. That can help people lower their risk for osteoporosis, a potentially debilitating condition char-acterized by brittle, fragile bones that are vulnerable to injury due to tissue loss.
Vitamin d
Dairy products that are fortified with vitamin D can help to build and maintain healthy bones. Milk, soy milk and certain yogurts and cereals are among the products that may be forti-fied with vitamin D. It’s im-portant to note that people can overdo it in regard to vitamin D. In fact, a 2010 study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association found that intake of very high doses of vitamin D among older women was linked to more falls and fractures. That’s something to con-sider for people consider-ing vitamin D supplements, which have become widely popular in recent years. Such supplements should be discussed with a physi-cian, who may just advise those concerned about their vitamin D intake to consume more low-fat dairy products.
Potassium
According to the USDA, certain dairy products can
be great sources of po-tassium. The organization notes that milk and yogurt have more potassium and less sodium than cheeses. Diets that include suffi-cient potassium have been linked to healthy blood pressure.
Fruits and vegetables may the first foods people think of when crafting healthy eating habits. But dairy products also make great, nutrient-rich additions to any diet.

It was initially created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but has now de-veloped into an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world After the National Dairy Council stepped in to promote the cause, the name soon changed to “Dairy Month.”
National Dairy Month is a great way to start the sum-mer with nutrient-rich dairy foods. From calcium to potassium, dairy products like milk contain nine es-sential nutrients which may help to better manage your weight, reduce your risk for high blood pressure, osteoporosis and certain cancers. Whether it’s pro-tein to help build and repair the muscle tissue of active bodies or vitamin A to help maintain healthy skin, dairy products are a natural nu-trient powerhouse. Those are just a few of the rea-sons that you should cele-brate dairy not just in June, but all year long.

Certain types of dairy can have a positive effect on blood pressure. Accord-ing to the Cleveland Clinic, people with high blood pressure, which occurs when the force of blood pushing against blood vessel walls is above nor-mal range, can look to diet to help lower their blood pressure. Among the foods that can benefit people with high blood pressure is low-fat dairy. Calcium-rich foods, such as low-fat dairy products like skim milk, 1 percent milk and Greek yo-gurt, can help lower blood pressure. In addition, the Cleveland Clinic notes that low-fat and low-salt cheese also can help peo-ple achieve healthier blood pressure levels. People with healthy blood pres-sure can switch to low-fat dairy to avoid high blood pressure, which is often re-ferred to as hypertension. In a study of more than 5,000 adults, researchers in Spain found that those who reported including the most low-fat dairy in their diets were 54 percent less likely to develop hyperten-sion over a two-year period than those who consumed the least amount of low-fat dairy products.

AGRICULTURE
hoW fArMerS

The farmers of yesteryear might not be too familiar with their surroundings if they were to visit a modern farm. While the men and women who made their liv-ings as farmers decades ago would no doubt still recognize certain farm features that have with-stood the test of time, they might not understand the
inner workings of the mod-ern farm, particularly in regard to the role technol-ogy now plays within the agricultural sector.Technology has changed agriculture in myriad ways. The methods farmers employ to produce food and improve the efficiency of their operations has changed as technology has evolved. One of the more noticeable changes that’s hard to miss on modern farms is the use of agricultural drones. Drones have been around
for decades. Sometimes referred to as “unmanned aerial vehicles,” or “UAVs,” drones can be utilized in ways that can save farmers money and protect the planet.• Monitor crops: Accord-ing to senseFly, the com-mercial drone subsidiary of Parrot Group, drones can help farmers effective-ly monitor their crops. With a drone flying overhead, farmers can spot and quickly identify issues af-fecting their crops before those issues escalate into something larger.
• Soil analysis: Another potential benefit of agri-cultural drones highlights their role in analyzing soil. Agricultural drones utilize complex mapping functions to gather data about the soil, including areas where it might be stressed. That enables farmers to develop accu-rate soil samples that can be used to guide deci-sions in regard to irrigation and fertilization.• Reduce waste: SenseFly notes that data gathered by drones can help farm-ers determine the vigor of their crops at various stages of growth. Such information can prevent overfertilization and over-watering, thereby reduc-ing waste and runoff, benefitting the planet as a result.
• Planning: Drones can be used to collect data on crop growth and health at various times throughout the growing season. That can help farmers develop accurate predictions regarding harvest quality and crop yield, making it easier for them to plan ahead.Agricultural drones are one of the many examples that illustrate how tech-nology has changed and will continue to change the ways modern farmers conduct business.

Did you know that humans are the only adult animal species that continues to consume “milk” through dairy products. While most animals wean off of their mother’s milk after infancy, humans across the globe have been consuming products produced by cow, sheep or goat milk for thousands of years. And the benefits can be numerous.
Human body grows to accept milkAlthough dairy doubters are quick to mention that it is not “natural” for humans to consume milk products into adulthood and that the body is not designed to digest the sugars and proteins in dairy, others are saying that centuries of farming have led to the evolution of human genes so that dairy products can be included in the diet. According to a study pub-lished in 2013 in the jour-nal Nature, archaeologist Peter Bogucki was exca-vating a Stone Age site in the fertile plains of central Poland in the 1970s when he came across various artifacts. One seemed to be an early pottery strain-er used in cheese-making. The pottery was studied, and milk proteins were found on it.As farming replaced hunt-ing and gathering in many areas of the world, it’s surmised that the human body slowly evolved to
tolerate milk into adult-hood, especially if it was fermented, such as in cheese or yogurt. Several thousand years later, it’s believed that a genetic mutation spread through Europe that gave people the ability to produce lac-tase — the enzyme neces-sary to digest the lactose sugar in dairy — and drink milk. Many people who retain the ability to digest milk can trace their ances-try to Europe, according to a group of scientists brought together to work on a multidisciplinary proj-
ect called LeCHE (Lac-tase Persistence in the early Cultural History of Europe). There are other dairy pockets from West Africa, the Middle East and South Asia.
Dairy’s present-day benefitsToday we know that dairy is an important source of nutrients at all ages and stages of growth. South-east United Dairy Industry Association, Inc. says that dairy is a great source of

YardMy husband and I were doing yard work, but I
started a fight so I could storm off into the air
conditioning.
SpiritI secretly enjoy when my
daughter is defiant because I love to see her fighting
spirit. Then, I put her in her place… because there’s only
room for one sheriff in this town!
let it out!
Why I never...
Thank You!
Can you imagine?!
I figured...
Look at that!
Picture this...
The nerve!
FunnYEverybody hates math until that paycheck looks a little
funny.
diSappearIs it just my house or does
everyone’s spoons and forks just magically disappear?
Where do they go?

protein, calcium, carbo-hydrates, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamins A, D, B12, riboflavin, and niacin. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that the calcium in dairy products is used for building bones and teeth and in maintain-ing bone mass. Diets with sufficient potassium may help to maintain healthy blood pressure. Addition-ally, vitamin D functions
in the body to maintain ideal levels of calcium and phosphorous so that bones are built and main-tained.The Australian Dietary Guidelines say that con-sumption of milk, cheese and yogurt is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, hyper-tension, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and colorectal cancer. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage children and adults to en-joy three servings of low-
fat or fat-free milk, cheese or yogurt each day. Can-ada’s Food Guide recom-mends between three and four servings for children in the preteen and teen-age years and two to three servings for adults.Dairy can be a nutritious part of a healthy diet, and history suggests it has been for quite some time.
