FAFSA w Free Application for Federal Student Aid

Before Beginning a fAFSA 1Signatures RequiredFederal Student Aid Is required to collect signatures from you and your parents (if applicable} whenyou file a FAFBA

There are three ways to sign:

• Electronically with a PIN• By printing, signing and mailing a signature page after you submit a FAFSA• By ~igning your Student AId Report (BAR) and returning It In the mall

TIP: The application process Is faster If you use your PIN to sign your app!lcatlon electronically.

If you already have a PIN you can use it to sign your FAFSA from one year to the next.

If you have not previously received a PIN. you have several options to apply for a PfN and have itdelivered to you.

1. Access Federal Student Aid's PIN Web site al 'MYW,pln,.I.Q.•gQIl_snd select Apply For A PIN.You may select one of the fo!towlng PIN delivery methods: • -

a. Instantly select or view your PIN online.b. Receive an e-mail with the PIN Immediately.c. Request the PIN be mailed to you (approximately 7·10 days for delivery).

2. Apply for a PIN while fllting out the FAFSA You may select one of the following PIN deliverymethods:

Important Note: A PIN that is selected or viewed Inslantly online or Is sent to you In an e-mail isconsidered to be conditional until your Information is verified with the SocIai Security Administration (1·3 days from the date you first apply). You may sign your FAFSA with it but nothing else. Once wecomplete this verification, you will be able to use your PIN for other purposes (such as correcting yourBAR or accessing other Federal Student Aid Web sites). At the time your PIN becomes permanent. wewill apply your electronic signature to your FAFSA and process it.

Keep In mind that you only have to apply for lit PIN one-time. You and your parents (It you are adependent student) can use the same PIN each year. speeding up the time It takes for yourFAFSA to be processed. Your parenti can even use the same PIN to sign FAFSAs for yoursiblings.

If you have submitted a FAFSA without a signature, you need to provide it to complete the submissionprocess. Once you have your PIN you can sign your FAFSA elewonlcaHy by selecting SrgnElectronIcally With Your PIN under the Filling Out a FAFSA section of the home page.

We enter your FAFSA resp(lflSes Into a formula (known as the Federal Methodology). which isregulated by the Higher Education Act of 1965. as amended. The result Is your Expected FamilyContribution, or EFC. The EFC is a preliminary estimate that measures yoor family's financial strength.It Is subtracted from the Cost of Attendance at the school(s) you plan to attend to determine youreligibility 'or federal student aid.

How do I find out what my EFC Is1

We will send you a report. called a Student AI4 Report (SAR) bye-mall or by postal mail depending onthe addresses that we have on file for you. The SAR lists the lnformaflon yoo reported on your FAFSA.At the upper right of the front page of the SAR, you'll find a figure called the EFC.

How much aid do I get?

Schools use your EFC to prepare a flnanclaf aid package (grants, loans, and/or work-study) to helpyou meet your financial need. financial need is the difference between your EFC and your school'scost of attendance (which can include Ilving expenses).

Federal Pelt GrantA Federal Pell Grant. unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded usually only to undergraduatestudents who have not earned a bachelor's or a professional degree. (In some cases. however, a student enrolled in apost-baccalaureate teacher certification program might receive a Pell Grant.) Pell Grants are considered a foundation offederal financial aid, to which aid from other federal and nonfederal sources might be added.

How much can I get?The maximum Pell Grant award for the 2009-10 award year (July 1,2009 to June 30, 2010) Is $5,350. The maximumamount can change each award year and depends on program funding. The amount you get, though, will depend notonly on your financial need, but also on your costs to attend school, your status as a full-tlme or part-time student, andyour plans to attend school for a full academic year or less.

!' I am eligible, how willi get the Pen Grant money?Your school can apply Pell Grant funds to your school costs, pay you directly (usually by check), or combine thesemethods. The school must tell you in writing how much your award will be and how and when you'll be paid. Schoolsmust disburse funds at least once per term (semester, trimester, or quarter). Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG)The Academic Competitiveness Grant was made available for the first time for the 2006-2007 school year for first-yearcollege students who graduated from high school after January 1, 2006, and for second-year college students whograduated from high school after January 1, 2005.

How Much Can a Student Receive?An Academic Competitiveness Grant provides $750 for the first year of study and $1,300 for the second year. Note: Theamount of the ACG, when combined with a Pell Grant, may not exceed the student's cost of attendance. In addition, ifthe number of eligible students Is large enough that payment of the full grant amounts would exceed the programappropriation in any fiscal year, then the amount of the grant to each eligible student may be ratably reducad.

Eligibility RequirementsTo be eligible for each academic year, a student must:

be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-cltizen;• be a Federal Pell Grant recipient;• be enrolled at least half-time In a degree program;

be a first or second-year undergraduate sludent or a student in a certificate program of at least one year In adegree program at a two-year or four-year degree-grantlng Institutionhave completed a rigorous secondary school program of study (after January 1, 2006, If a first-year stUdent, andafter January 1, 2005, if a second-year student); andIf a first-year student - nol have been previously enrolled In an ACG-ellglble program while at or below age ofcompUlsory schcol attendance; orif a second-year student - have at least a cumulative 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale as of Iheend of the first year of undergraduate study.

Recognized Rigorous Secondary School Programs of StUdyFor qualifying for an ACG, anyone of the following programs meet the "rigorous secondary school program of study"requirement:

1. Rigorous secondary school programs designated by state education agencies (SEAs) and state-authorized localeducation agencies (LEAs) and recognized by the Secretary of Education.

2. Advanced or honors secondary SChool programs established by states.3. Secondary school programs Identified by a state-level partnership recognized by the State Scholars Initiative of

the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WiCHE) of Boulder, Colorado.4. A program for a student who completes at least two courses In the International Baccalaureate (18) Diploma

Program with a score of four or higher on the course examinatlons or at least two Advancad Placement (AP) courseswith a score of three or higher on Ihe College Board's exams for those courses.

5. A secondary school program in which a student completes, at minimum:o Four years of English;o Three years of math, inclUding algebra I and a higher level class such as algebra II, geometry, or data

The National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant(National SMART Grant)The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, also known as the National Smart Grant Isavailable during the third and fourth years of undergraduate study (or fifth year of a five-year program) to at least half.time students who are eligible for the Federal Pell Grant and who are majoring in physical, life, or computer sclences,mathematics, technology, engineering or a critical foreign language; or non-major single liberal arts programs. Thestudent must also be enrollad In the courses necessary to complete the degree program and to fulfill the requirements ofthe intendad eligible major In addition to maintaining a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 In coursework reqUired for the major. The NatIonal SMART Grant award Is in addillon to the student's Pelf Grant award.

How Much Can A Student Receive?A National SMART Grant win provide up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study. Theamount of the SMART Grant, when combined with a Pelf Grant, may not exceed the student's cost of attendance. Inaddition, If the number of eligible students is large enough that payment of the full grant amounts would exceed theprogram approprlallon in any fiscal year, then the amount of the grant to each eligible student may be ratably reduced.

Eligible Students

Note - A student Is eligible to receive a National SMART Grant if the student enrolls In the courses necessary to completethe degree program and to fulflH the requirements of the Intended eligible major.

That Is, an otherwiae ellglble student can receive a National SMART Grant for a payment perIod only If the student Isenrolled In at least one course that meets the specifIC requirements of the student's National SMART Grant-ellglble majorand It Is not necessary that the course be offered by the academic department that confers the degree In the eligiblemajor. For example, a student malorlng In biology Is eligible to receive a National SMART Grant during a semester Inwhich he or she Is enrolled In a physics course if the physics course Is required for the major even if the student Is notenrolled in any biology courses.

A student who Is taking general education courses or electives that satisfy general degree requiraments for the student'sNational SMART Grant-eligible program. but who Is not taking at least one course specific to and required for theNational SMART Grant-ellglble major, is not eligible for a National SMART Grant payment for that payment period. Forexample, the biology student described above may be taking courses during a semester In the humanltfes, the arts, andphyslcat education in order to fulflll the general educallon requirements of the degree program or major. However, to beeligible for a National SMART Grant the student must also be enrolled In at least one course required for the student'sNational SMART Grant major. How Do I Qualify?

Students meeting the qualifications fisted below will have all tuition andfee expenses for the regular academic year (faU and spring) covered bygrant and/or scholarship aid. Academic year enrollment charges will becovered with different forms of gift aid, including Federal, state,institutional (including the UTPA Advantage Grant) and private forms ofscholarships and grants.
